KOLKATA: Britannia Industries has received an order from the Deputy Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, Large Taxpayers Unit-1, Bengaluru, demanding Rs 63,91,842 under Section 73 of the Central Goods and Services Tax Act, 2017, over alleged ineligible input tax credit. The amount includes Rs 35,20,360 in tax, Rs 25,19,446 in interest and Rs 3,52,036 in penalties.

The order, uploaded on the GST portal and received via system-generated email on 29th December 2025, has been acknowledged by the company. T. V. Thulsidass, company secretary, confirmed that there is no material impact on Britannia’s financials or operations. The company intends to exercise all legal remedies available under the GST law.

Britannia insists the matter is appealable and is taking steps to contest the claim, signalling that while the tax bite is notable, the business engine keeps running.
