  • Curtains for in-hotel conferences and events sector?

Curtains for in-hotel conferences and events sector?

MUMBAI: For long, the hospitality industry has played hard to get with those in the knowledge and entertainment event business. Banquet sales managers of five star hotels, venues were so used to charging a premium for almost any additional request that was put to them. And they refused to budge.  We are referring to the Tajs, the Oberois, the Marriots, the Hyatts, the ITCs, the Lalits et al.

Rentals for banquet halls, mediocre buffet meals at atrociously high price, additional monopoly penalty fees for suppliers (who have a monopoly in the hotel, promising it minimum obscene revenues) of almost everything from cranes, to generators, to even sets in the hall – the charges piled on. And the organizer of the event (mainly the client, which could be a brand or parents of a to-be-wedded couple) had to cough up.  No amount of cajoling or negotiation worked. ‘Take it or leave’ was the attitude.

The challenge is there are very few good banquet halls to organize conferences for 300 people or more. The venues are a scarcity and most of them are taken up much in advance. Hence, with it being a sellers’ market, the buyers had no choice but to grit their teeth and agree.

An evening gig for 300 people could set you back by Rs 16-17 lakh, including meals, alcohol, and some décor and stage setups. A majority of that would be accounted for by banquet fees.

Now with the Covid2019 virus raging like a tempest across the world and slaying hundreds of thousands of people and strict lockdown procedures in place – disallowing gatherings of people – these very same hotels are vacant or are being used to house policemen or other government officials. Banquet managers, who used to grinning ear to ear thanks to the fat revenues they earned from overcharging for average spaces, are scratching their heads on how and when they will go back to what was their normal.

The news for them is that their days are numbered. The normal is gone. There’s a new gig in town. The online one. Over the past few weeks, new options have emerged: that of the online webinar, and of web performances. Tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet – are being used more than ever. At any given moment at least hundred webinars or meetings are being held somewhere in India. And they are working out well.

Prices are affordable: a good webinar with 500 participants can be put together for less than $200 each, including hosting, audience generation, marketing, video recording, packaging and the bells and whistles. The best part is that you have very limited check boxes to tick as compared to real live events. The main ones being: bandwidth, and speaker generation and a background image.  There is no question of food, or arrangements, sound or lights, or stage.

As compared to that, the amount of effort that goes into organizing a live event is draining. Sessions are delayed, some run overtime, speakers arrive late courtesy traffic, thus sending schedules haywire and irritating other punctual ones and the audience.  Speakers are irritated, the audience gets annoyed. Of course, there is the additional worry of raising sponsorships and selling seats to help defray these exorbitant costs, negotiations with the hotel on every issue, sounds, lights, projectors et al.

It’s quite likely that corporate India will take the digital virtual conference route even after the Covid2019 menace goes away, because of all the conveniences it offers.

Will this force five star hotels and conference venues to become more reasonable?

The top ends ones might go even more premium and charge even more, willing as they are to forego business volumes and focusing on high profitability. The wise ones will choose the price competitive path, and, may be, attract some real-world conferences back.

My understanding is that while the real-world-touch-and-feel effect for events is so much better, the challenges outweigh the benefits.  Hence, the digital/virtual pathway seems more appealing. Of course, some may argue that zoom bombing can throw a spanner in the online conference business. But that can be curtailed by verifying ever participant.

Clearly, the events industry has seen a shift. Those in the hospitality industry who react rightly will benefit in the long run. Those who do not: well, it will be ta-ta to them.

  • Zoom comes under malware attack

    Zoom comes under malware attack

MUMBAI: Hackers have been on the prowl, targeting popular video conferencing application Zoom as more and more people are resorting to virtual meetings in the wake of COIVD-19 pandemic. Such malware attacks, commonly called Zoom Bombing, have been reported from different parts of the world.

In a Zoom Bombing, hackers typically intrude a video conference and post hate or pornographic images.

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, companies world over adopted the work-from-home system as part of social distancing, necessitating the use of online communication tools like Zoom, for meetings and conferences. Zoom, a cloud-based communication platform, has increasingly been used by organisations for virtual meetings, video conferencing, and webinars. Zoom has seen increased downloads. In March alone, the app was downloaded around 40 million times across the world, even surpassing popular apps like TikTok and Facebook.

The changed scenario, however, has given rise to wily hackers who are on the prowl within the dark underbelly of the online world. Cyber security experts have found that such cyber criminals are targeting communication platforms, thereby putting those who communicate via the likes of Zoom at risk. Phishing and malware attacks have also increased.

The Zoom Bombing has been attracting news headlines with reports of virtual conferences being interrupted by hate-spouting oddballs who disrupt the meetings by posting pornographic or hateful images.  In the US, a meeting of Alcoholics Anonymous was disrupted by a hacker who spouted anti-Semitic and misogynistic words. There have also been other instances where high school online classes were interrupted by such intruders.

On Thursday morning, the launch of BARC-Nielsen week 12 report on ‘Crisis Consumption: An insight into TV, digital and audience’ via Zoom was disrupted due to what seemed like a malware attack. The meeting was rescheduled after it was disrupted apparently by a malware within half-an-hour of the start.

Hackers have been found to be taking advantage of the increased use of Zoom by registering fake Zoom domains. According to a report by cyber security website Check Point, cyber criminals have created around 1,700 fake Zoom domains after the COVID-19 virus broke out.

Despite the popularity, there is of late no dearth of trouble for Zoom. In the US, the virtual communication platform, which has seen a spurt in usage after the COVID-10 pandemic, has been mired in data privacy issues. On Wednesday, shares of Zoom tumbled six per cent for the third consecutive day. In fact, it has been a downward journey for its stock since 27 March.

So how do you prevent intruders from disrupting Zoom meetings?

According to Business Insider, you can go to “account management > account setting,” find the “waiting room” button and turn it on. “That way, the host can allow in participants who are invited and weed out uninvited guests who will sit in the queue,” it says.

A Zoom spokesperson was quoted by Forbes as saying this. “For those hosting private meetings, password protections are on by default and we recommend that users keep those protections on to prevent uninvited users from joining. We also encourage users to report any incidents of this kind directly so we can take appropriate action.”

Here are some tips for organisations before they log on to a Zoom meeting room:

Ø  Send meeting invitation on official email ID and to those individuals who are required

Ø  Ensure that only authenticated users can join meetings and enable 'require password' feature

Ø  Use the 'waiting room feature' to avoid unwanted attendees

Ø  The host can enable "co-host" for the purpose of moderation

Ø  Do not download or install any unauthorised software from malicious site. Install only legitimate and licensed software.

  • Zoom consumers are micro-influencers on their own: Nikhil Gandhi

Zoom consumers are micro-influencers on their own: Nikhil Gandhi

MUMBAI: Zoom, the entertainment channel of Times Network recently revamped its identity from just Zoom to Zoom styled by Myntra. The revamped version went live on 19 April 2018 at 9 pm. Now Zoom has a sub brand called Zoom Studio, which will provide content to many OTT players.

Currently, the channel has 10 million unique visitors per month and on social media, the channel is followed by 20 million people, according to Times Network president Nikhil Gandhi.

At Indiantelevision.com’s new video economy event BrandVid powered by Colors, Gandhi said, "The most important thing that has come out of this deal is how we trade around with content that works well for them as well as us.” From Myntra’s strategic point of view to build and influence the whole fashion space, we were lucky to have the timings so well matched that it jelled into their own strategy. The association went beyond just plain vanilla branding to largely on the back of content."

The event was organised by Indiantelevision.com on 30 October 2018 in Mumbai, for brands, agencies, marketers, broadcasters, publishers and producers to understand how to work closely and create short form and long form content which will connect with the audience directly.

The deal is a monetised partnership that Gandhi is optimistic will travel beyond at least three years. Outfits for the anchors on the channel are provided by Myntra. Zoom aimed to leverage Myntra’s style quotient for a new look and feel, shows, web-series, short formats and exclusive experiences.

By the end of the year, its new Zoom Live division will be available. “We are working on a very strategic initiative on how we influence our community which is beyond engaging on digital as well as television. We are building on a phenomenon called ‘Escapism’ where we want the consumers to escape from their reality into our world and engage with them with great content.”

The channel has original content produced by Zoom like Reunion, Ready to Mingle, Imperfect and many more. Myntra and Zoom get the traction on board in equal measure for the shows. Gandhi believes that each of their consumers are micro-influencers on their own.

“On the other hand we have been able to also take advantage of the things they have, fashion as a category lends organically to the whole of Bollywood. If you go to the Myntra site, we now have a Zoom store on it and we provide a lot of content to them and they engage with their consumers on how they can influence their buying patterns as far as the content is concerned,” he pointed.

At the time of the revamp, Gandhi mentioned that they are targeting the sweet spot of 15-24-year-olds.
