    Oscars unveils stellar line-up of presenters

    MUMBAI: This year’s Oscars will see a stellar line-up of presenters. 

     

    From Josh Hutcherson, Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Saldana, Octavia Spencer, Marion Cotillard, Benedict Cumberbatch, Meryl Streep, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto, Matthew McConaughey to Lupita Nyong’o, the who’s who of Hollywood will take to the stage to present various awards this year.

     

    Cotillard, Cumberbatch, Streep, Winfrey and Witherspoon have all been nominated for the Oscars this year. Cotillard is nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for Two Days, One Night. She previously won an Oscar in this category for La Vie en Rose (2007). On the other hand, Cumberbatch is nominated for Actor in a Leading Role for The Imitation Game.

     

    Streep earned a record 19th acting nomination this year for her supporting role in Into the Woods. She previously took home Oscars for her lead performances in Sophie’s Choice (1982) and The Iron Lady (2011), and her supporting performance in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). Streep’s previous Best Actress nominations were for The French Lieutenant’s Woman (1981), Silkwood (1983), Out of Africa (1985), Ironweed (1987), A Cry in the Dark (1988), Postcards from the Edge (1990), The Bridges of Madison County (1995), One True Thing (1998), Music of the Heart (1999), The Devil Wears Prada (2006), Doubt (2008), Julie & Julia (2009) and August: Osage County (2013). She also received Best Supporting Actress nominations for The Deer Hunter (1978) and Adaptation (2002).

     

    Winfrey is nominated for Best Picture as one of the producers of Selma. She was previously nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role for The Color Purple (1985). She received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2011.

     

    Witherspoon is nominated for Actress in a Leading Role for Wild. She previously won an Oscar in this category for the 2005 movie Walk the Line.

     

    Additionally, last year’s Oscar winners Blanchett, Leto, McConaughey and Nyong’o will also be seen presenting awards this year. “The great tradition of having the previous year’s Oscar-winning best actors and actresses in all four categories happily continues this year with the amazing quartet of Cate, Jared, Matthew and Lupita. We’re thrilled to have them back,” said show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron.

     

    Blanchett has been nominated for six Oscars and has won two, including last year’s award for Blue Jasmine. Her previous win was for Actress in a Supporting Role for the 2004 film The Aviator. Blanchett also received leading actress nominations for Elizabeth (1998) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007), and supporting actress nominations for Notes on a Scandal (2006) and I’m Not There (2007).

     

    Last year, Leto won the Oscar for Actor in a Supporting Role and McConaughey for Actor in a Leading Role, both for Dallas Buyer’s Club. Nyong’o took home the Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role for 12 Years a Slave.

     

    The Oscars will be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and will be held on 22 February.

    Marvel releases first full trailer of Guardians of the Galaxy

    MUMBAI: Marvel Studios unveiled its newest team of superheroes on Tuesday night with the first trailer for the movie Guardians of the Galaxy. The footage for the film, based on the cult Marvel comic, premiered on American Broadcasting Company (ABC)’s late night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!

     

    From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team – the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits – Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

     

    Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, which first appeared in comic books in Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (Jan. 1969), stars Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), Zoe Saldana (Avatar), Dave Bautista (Riddick), featuring Vin Diesel (Fast and Furious) as the voice of Groot, Academy Award nominee Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook) as the voice of Rocket, Golden Globe Award nominee Lee Pace (The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug), Michael Rooker (Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer), Karen Gillan (Doctor Who), Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond), with Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly (Chicago), Primetime Emmy Award winner Glenn Close (Damages) as Nova Prime Rael and Academy Award winner Benicio del Toro (Traffic) as The Collector.

     

    James Gunn (Thor: The Dark World) is the director of the film with Kevin Feige (Spiderman series) producing, and Louis D’Esposito (The Avengers), Victoria Alonso (Thor), Jeremy Latcham (Iron Man), Alan Fine (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and Stan Lee (X-Men: Days of Future Past) serve as executive producers. The story is by Nicole Perlman and James Gunn, with screenplay by James Gunn. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy releases in U.S. theatres on 1 August 2014.

  • Bradley Cooper set to be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy

    Bradley Cooper set to be a part of Guardians of the Galaxy

    MUMBAI: The deal with Marvel studios has assured Cooper’s voice for the hero Rocket Racoon. This will be the first time he will be a part of a superhero movie as well as lending his voice to a character. It is produced by Marvel studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

    The film has already begun filming and Cooper is the final name to the list. He joins Chris Pratt, Benicio Del Toro, Zoe Saldana, Glenn Close, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker and John C. Reilly in the cast. The movie is set to release on 1 August next year.

    Cooper is repped by CAA. He was previously seen in the highly acclaimed movie Silver Linings Playbook, for which he was nominated in the Oscars. Guardians of the Galaxy is based on a Marvel Comics of the same name.

    Star Trek into Darkness to release in India on 17 May

    MUMBAI: Paramount Pictures has announced the release of Star Trek Into Darkness by launching the poster of the film. The film has been scheduled for theatrical release all over India on 17 May.

    The second installment of J.J. Abrams‘ successful 2009 reboot of the franchise will be released in 3D.

    In the much awaited installment, as the heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made, as the only family Kirk is left with, is his crew!!

    The film has Karl Urban as Bones, Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Anton Yelchin as Checkov, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and John Cho as Sulu.
    The trailer of the film is scheduled to be out today.

    Thornton, Whitaker in Out of the Furnace

    MUMBAI: Billy Bob Thornton and Forest Whitaker have signed up to play the leading villains in upcoming film Out of the Furnace.

    The 56-year-old will join Christian Bale, Zoe Saldana and Casey Affleck. The film is about a man who tracks down his brother‘s killer after he is released from prison, it is understood.

    Whitaker is also set to play a leading part in the Scott Cooper-directed picture while Thornton will play the leading bad guy in the project.

    The actor, who was married to actress Angelina Jolie for three years, is best known for roles in Sling Blade and Armageddon. He is currently filming a part in the film Red Machine.

    Avatar 2 will release in 2016

    MUMBAI: James Cameron‘s Avatar 2 has reportedly been delayed. The much-awaited film was originally scheduled to release in 2014, but there is news that the Avatar sequel may be pushed back for a 2016 opening.

    It has however been revealed that the new film will showcase advanced technology that includes a higher rate of 3D camera system and the CG and performance capture.

    Way back in October 2010, 20th Century Fox had announced that Avatar 2 would release in December 2014 and Avatar 3 in December 2015.

    Cameron has signed up to return to the director‘s seat and has planned to film the two sequels back-to-back.

    Starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver, Avatar released in 2009 and was named the highest grossing film of all time.
