‘Zero Dark Thirty’ steals a march at critics awards

MUMBAI: Kathryn Bigelow‘s ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ about the hunt by the C.I.A. for Osama Bin Laden has picked up many critics awards.
It won best picture from the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the New York Film Critics Online.
The one critics group that awarded something else was the Los Angeles Film Critics Association which voted for the foreign film ‘Amour‘ as its best film. It also gave a much needed boost to ‘The Master‘ by naming Paul Thomas Anderson as best director. Bigelow was the runner up here.
Daniel Day Lewis has picked up a few awards for his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg‘s biopic. But so far ‘Lincoln‘ has not been named best picture or by anybody apart from the National board of review which included it in its top 10. Their top 10 list had some surprises like ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower‘ getting in while films like ‘Life of Pi‘ were left out.
The Best actress Oscar is a fight between Jessica Chastain for ‘Zero Dark Thirty‘ and Jennifer Lawrence for ‘Silver Linings Playbook‘. Both have won critics awards. One surprise so far was Rachel Weisz winning best actor from the New York Film Critics Circle for ‘Deep Blue Sea‘. This week will be busy with the Screen Actors Guild announcing their nominees. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association will also be announcing their list of nominees for the Golden Globe Awards this week. The American Film Institute will also announce their list of top 10 movies of the year.

Zero Dark Thirty to release on 11 January

MUMBAI: PVR Pictures is readying itself to release Kathryn Bigelow’s most ambitious production to date Zero Dark Thirty, a chronicle of the decade long hunt for Al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama Bin Laden after the 9/11 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy SEAL Team 6 in 2011 on 11 January.

Zero Dark Thirty (the title is military jargon for the dark of night, as well as the moment—12:30 a.m.—when the Navy SEALs first stepped foot on the compound) marks Bigelow’s most ambitious production after her impressive Oscar winning war film The Hurt Locker based in Iraq.
Deploying the full arsenal of filmic art, from the naturalistic performances of an ensemble that includes Jessica Chastain, Jason Clarke, Joel Edgerton, Jennifer Ehle, Mark Strong, Kyle Chandler, and Edgar Ramirez to innovative cinematography in extreme low-light conditions and the painstakingly layered art direction, every facet of the production becomes a proving ground for Bigelow to make living history come alive on screen.
Zero Dark Thirty has received brilliant reviews from critics and is being called a taut, gritty and superbly visualized narrative neatly packed as an action thriller by a master filmmaker who knows her craft.

MUMBAI: The first film, depicting the raid by US special forces to kill the world‘s most wanted terrorist Osama bin Laden, will hit the American television airways on 4 November, 48 hours before the presidential polls.
Titled Seal Team Six, the film made by National Geographic Channel is all set for opening on 4 November, more than a month before the theatrical release of the much-awaited film by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow Zero Dark Thirty.
The film is directed by John Stockwell and produced by Nicolas Chartier and Weinstein. It stars Cam Gigandet, Anson Mount, Freddy Rodriquez and Xzibit.

“We wanted to be first to bring this story to viewers,” National Geographic Channels president Howard T Owens thas been quoted to have said. Owens, however said that the decision to debut the film days before the election wasn‘t motivated by politics.
Notwithstanding his comments, co-producer of the film Harvey Weinstein is a prominent fundraiser for President Barack Obama, whose election team has made the killing of Bin Laden his major re-election plank.

Shabana Azmi approached to star in Zero Dark Thirty

MUMBAI: Kathryn Bigelow, who just wrapped up a week’s shooting for her film Zero Dark Thirty based on the killing of Osama bin Laden, has reportedly talked to Shabana Azmi to star in her film mired with controversies.

It is said that the Hurt Locker director had made up her mind to cast some prominent actors of Pakistani origin, but nothing transpired once she knew that she would not be able to shoot because she didn’t get the required permission.

Now she has decided to cast Indian actors. However, no name has yet been finalised as to who would essay the role of Osama bin Laden. Said a team member on condition of anonymity, “While we have finalised our American cast members, Kathryn is yet to take a final call on the actor who would be playing Osama.”

The film that follows the capture of the world‘s most wanted terrorist was originally going to be shot in Abbottabad in Pakistan, where bin Laden was captured. However, after being denied access by the government, Bigelow moved production to the Indian town of Chandigarh.

There, the crew designed the area to look like the Pakistan town of Lahore and had extras dressed in Pakistani garb. Here too, the film faced protests from people who were against parts of India turned into that of Pakistan with their flag flying high. However, the problem was sorted out.

This isn‘t the first time that Bigelow has run into trouble. In January, the CIA opened an official investigation into the project over whether the Oscar-winning director and screenwriter Mark Boal had leaked classified material regarding the recent capture and assassination of the late al Qaeda leader.

Zero Dark Thirty is set to hit theatres later in 2012
