    Sarah Coursey is Zee TV’s new global sales executive

    MUMBAI: The Global Syndication head of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) Sunita Uchil announced that new Regional head of Syndication, Sarah Coursey, will head ZEEL’s syndication sales for North America, LatAm and Canada. 

    Coursey held executive roles at Zodiak, M.E.G., Newzulu Ltd., and Distraction Formats, specializing in Format sales and acquisitions. Coursey has previously worked in the U.S., Italy, Germany, UK and Brazil; and is fluent in five languages.

    “We are very pleased that Sarah will join our team to handle syndication for the Americas. She brings with her a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation.  As Zee TV expands around the world, we are confident that Sarah will help tremendously to increase our footprint into the region.” said Uchil. 

    “Zeel is one of the world’s top media companies and I am thrilled to join Sunita and her team and be able to showcase the high quality, diverse programming from Zee TV and Z Living,” said Coursey. “It is such an exciting time to be working with Zeel as they continue to reach every corner of the planet.”

    Coursey’s previous positions include heading two departments at Zodiak: Format Sales & Acquisitions. She supervised acquisitions from 34 production companies; managed the sales team and handled formats and films in her territories, selling The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Italy and France. She also created a format sales and acquisitions department for MEG (Media Entertainment Group), launching 20 formats on the international market, regularly liaising with the marketing, legal and operations departments and hiring agents to generate additional revenue. Coursey was also European Sales Manager at Distraction Formats.

    A dynamic communicator, Coursey has shared her industry expertise as a panelist and lecturer at NATPE, DISCOP, Rose d’Or and at the EBU. Coursey is the creator of Love at First Bite, which aired on Discovery Italy – Real Time Channel in 2013 as Ti Prendo per la Gola

    ZMCL distribution to be handled by Zeel; to launch Wion by Aug 2016

    MUMBAI: Zee Media Corporation (ZMCL) has informed the bourses that it has terminated its distribution arrangement with Taj Television (India) Private Limited (Taj TV) which will now be done by Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel). Taj TV is a wholly owned subsidiary of ZEEL.

    ZMCL has also announced that its board of directors has approved the business plan for the launch of an English News channel Wion (World is One News) in August 2016.

    The board has accorded in-principle approval for a material related party transaction with Zeel, a related party, for distribution of television channels of the company at seven per cent revenue sharing  on the subscription revenue of the television channels of ZMCL. The company will seek approval of the unrelated shareholders for this material related party transaction between ZMCL and Zeel.

    The above approvals were made by the ZMCL board of directors at meeting held on 29 April 2016. During the meeting, the board has also approved the nomination of CEO R K Arora as key managerial person with effect from 29 April 2016. Arora joined ZMCL as COO in May 2015 and was recently elevated to the post of CEO

    &TV strengthens weekend programming with So You Think You Can Dance

    MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL) is all set to take entertainment levels one notch higher with its channel &TV. After airing shows like India Poochega Sabse Shaana Kaun?,  Deal or No Deal and The Voice,  &TV is all set to kick start another exciting Indian adaptation of American dance reality show So You Think You Can Dance – ‘Ab India Ki Baari’ . To be aired twice a week, the show will be launched with a bank of 26 episodes for 13 weeks.

    With 14 Emmy awards, 26 localized productions representing 35 different countries, the show will be aired from 24 April on Saturday and Sunday at the 8.30 pm time band. Produced by Endemol Shine India SYTYCD will witness an epic battle of Street and Stage style dance for the very first time on Indian Television. The two styles will battle it out and give all that it takes for the ultimate supremacy title on the dance floor.

    Maruti Suzuki’s Alto K 10 has been roped in as the presenting sponsor for the show. Apart from this, the channel has also brought in Chings’ Secret and Yepme.com as co-powered by sponsors and Priyagold as special partner for the show.

    Leading the judges’ panel will be the epitome of grace and panache – Madhuri Dixit along with the national award winning choreographer – Bosco Martis and an encyclopaedia in dance and style – Terence Lewis.  While Bosco will represent the street styles of dancing, Terence will represent the stage styles.  Mouni Roy of the Naagin fame and the charming Rithvik Dhanjani are the hosts of the show.

    Speaking with Indiantelevision.com, &TV business head Rajesh Iyer said, “We have been evaluating dance shows and So You Think You Can Dance is one of the leading dance shows that has been around in 35 nations now. The format brings forth an immense concept where the contestants are classified into two groups as per their style of dancing – Street and Stage. The ultimate winner from a gruelling Street v/s Stage Gala rounds will be chosen under the guidance of an esteemed jury. We believe that the show will give a new momentum to weekend television viewing experience.”

    “We have to look at the overall strategy and So You Think You Can Dance tactically fit well with the 8.30 slot. Therefore we decided to take that particular time band to get more traction,” revealed Iyer.

    He further added, “We are targeting family audiences because we are bringing something that is so inherent to Indian families which is their love for song and dance. Obviously youth is a very substantial part of our target audience and we want them to watch the show as well.”  

    After The Voice, Deal or No Deal, this is the third show that Endemol is producing for &TV. Speaking about the expectation from the show, Endemol Shine India COO Abhishek Rege said, “It’s been a biggest dance format and it’s been there for the last 13 years now. Even in India some of the shows have drawn inspiration from this and it was high time to get this show in India. I am glad that &TV actually thought about it.  Aside from showcasing superlative content and talent, audiences will get to see a lot of dance variety on one platform. It is really good bet to have and we all are sure that it will succeed. With SYTYCD we would actually be able to take ratings averages of &TV also higher. We are sure that it will create a buzz around the dancing fraternity.”

    With a 360 degree marketing blitzkrieg planned pan India, &TV is certainly looking at engaging consumers across various touchpoints. The campaign emphasizes on Ab India Ki Baari highlighting that the country is now ready for the ultimate battle of Street v/s Stage on the lines of the global format.

    The original show was created by American Idol proytducers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lhgoe and is produced by Core Media Group’s 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions. The channel has acquired the rights of the global dance reality format SYTYCD from Dick Clark Productions. In the US, the contract for SYTYCD was recently renewed by Fox for a 13th season, which is slated to go on air on 30 May.

    Cannes: It was a moment of pride for India at MipTV when Zee International CEO Amit Goenka went on stage at the Carlton Hotel in Cannes on  the French Riviera to receive the organization’s Medaille D’Honneur. It was the first time that an Indian executive had been accorded that recognition.

    Amit received the citation on behalf of his brother and Zeel CEO Punit Goenka  and himself to thunderous applause. He pointed out that the Zee Network had expanded the number of languages it is available to eight. He  spoke about the group’s recent Fillipino launch for its Zee Sine channel recently and highlighted that the broadcaster was readying its German foray called Zee One in July this year.

    He announced that the Zee group was gearing to emerge as one of the top global  media conglomerates by 2020. An he invited the entire TV community to be a part of the Zee TV family.

    Amit was joined at the MipTV dinner cum gala by his lovely wife Navyata.

    Other honorees at the exclusive MipTV Medaille D’Honneur were senior international executives: Germany’s Studiocanal TV MD Rola Bauer,  Disney Media Networks global distribution president Ben Pyne from the US  and Mexico’s Comarex president Marcel Vinay.

    The dinner witnessed attendance from the crème de la crème of Zee TV’s international operations. Present were: Chief Business Officer international business Asia Today Sunita Uchill, Zeel CBO Sunil Buch, Asia TV CEO Europe Neeraj Dhingra, ZLiving CEO India, &APAC Piyush Sharma, Asia TV GmH Business head Friederike Behrends, Asia TV Deputy CEO and CFO Parul Goel, Zee TV president –strategy international business Rajeev Kheror, Zeel region head syndication, India Sharmeen D’souza, and finally Z Living’s Yogesh Karikurve.

The Indian globally operating media company will launch a free to air channel Zee One in July 2016.  Zee One will bring high-quality films and series produced by the Indian film industry to German screens 24 hours a day. Friederike Behrends will be responsible for business operations in the German-speaking area.

    In addition, ZEEL’s own in-house entertainment and general interest programmes are to be progressively promoted.  Zee One will be available on the most important satellite and cable platforms. Zee One’s core target group will be females between the ages of 19 and 59.

    Asia TV Ltd. (Zee TV) Europe CEO Neeraj Dhingra said, “The launch of Zee One will signify ZEEL´s entry into one of the world´s most important television markets, in which the Bollywood genre is still barely represented as yet. It is therefore a major step as part of our international expansion strategy, we want to establish a lasting presence and grow in the German television market. With our highest levels of entertainment and new content, we are confident of being able to offer viewers an attractive enrichment to the existing range of television offerings.”

    Behrends said, “Bollywood content offers a much broader spectrum than is known on German television. The aim is to enhance Germany´s entertainment offerings by introducing an entirely new genre. We intend to capture the hearts of German viewers with Bollywood. We are currently engaged in intensive talks with German TV-platform operators with a view to expanding the reach as quickly as possible on a broad scale via all transmission paths.”

    Until recently, Friederike Behrends was, among other things, senior strategy advisor for the international streaming provider Magine, being responsible for its German market entry in 2014. From 2008 to 2012, she was managing director of WDR media group digital GmbH and the full-service internet agency web Colony in Cologne. She took over these positions after becoming a member of the board of directors at Bild.-T-Online.de AG & Co. KG, where she had worked since 2001. Previous career stages included a period at Grundy UFA TV Productions GmbH.

    ZEEL enters Philippines with ‘Zee Sine’

    MUMBAI: After creating success stories with two Bollywood channels in the APAC region, namely Zee Bioskop in Indonesia and Zee Nung in Thailand, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) becomes the first Indian company to foray into Philippines with its third dedicated Bollywood movie channel for the local Filipino audience starting today.

    Announcing ZEE’s entry into the Philippines, International Broadcast Business, ZEEL  International broadcast business CEO Amit Goenka said, “ZEE has been the cultural ambassador for Bollywood and Indian content in overseas markets. In line with our Vision 2020 goals, we have chalked out an aggressive international expansion plan, with APAC being one of the key regions. We already have 5 dedicated localized channels in APAC, comprising of GEC and movie genres, and our entry into Philippines will only further strengthen our presence. With the Pay-TV industry projected to grow at an average of 13% Y-o-Y in the next 5 years, we see huge potential in this market.”

    Zee Sine – Bollywood Na Tayo (‘Sine’ means ‘Cinema’ and ‘Bollywood Na Tayo’ means ‘Let’s Go Bollywood’ in Tagalog) is a 24/7 Bollywood movie channel customized and packaged for the local audience. The channel features Blockbuster movies from the World’s Biggest Hindi Film Library of ZEEL.

    Speaking on the launch of Zee Sine, ZEEL  Asia Pacific business head Sushruta Samanta said, “Both India and Philippines display strong affinity for music and dance. Our research shows that Indian Bollywood Films are relatable as the stories hit close to home, reflecting similar emotions and values shown in Filipino movies. While other content from around the world has entered Philippines already, we plan to bring a fresh and unique perspective by launching Zee Sine in Philippines. We felt it is the right time for us to enter this market and showcase our heart-warming and larger-than-life Bollywood movies to the Filipino audience.”

    “Maria Liza Ginting, who currently heads our Indonesia market, will also be heading the Philippines operations along with the local team in Manila,” Samanta further added.

    Sharing more details on the channel, Maria Liza Young – Ginting, Country Head, Indonesia & Philippines said, “Zee Sine will take you to a new world of entertainment with high-voltage Bollywood dramas, love triangles, comedies and song and dance. To reach out to the local audience, we have hand-picked movies from the library, dubbed in Tagalog, re-christened movie titles and character names in English while promos and special movie properties are being locally created. The channel is being distributed through one of the leading cable distributors in the country, Cable Boss, and will soon be available on more platforms in the market.”

    The channel will be showcased at PCTA (Philippine Cable TV Association Inc.) Convention 2016, which is one of the biggest Pay-TV operators conventions in Philippines, to be held between 12-15 April, 2016.

    As the channel goes on-air today, Zee Sine promises to entertain Philippines the Bollywood way.
