    ZEEL’s Akash Chawla replaces Pradeep Hejmadi as Business Head of Zee TV

    MUMBAI: ZEEL has elevated Akash Chawla and Deepak Rajadhyaksha for key roles in Zee TV to drive the organizations goals.

    In addition to his current portfolio as Business Head- Essel Vision Productions Limited/Zee Studios, Chawla will now also take charge as the Business Head of Zee TV. In his earlier broadcasting stint, Chawla has successfully spearheaded the marketing function for the flagship and national channels like ZeeTV, Zee Cinema and Zee Classic.

    He has also played a pivotal role in the launch of channels like &pictures, Zee Anmol and Zindagi. All the functions of Zee TV like marketing, research and PR will align with Chawla.

    Meanwhile, Deepak Rajadhyaksha, who has been successfully leading the role as the Business Head of Zee Marathi, will now take charge as the Deputy Business Head, Zee TV. He will report to Akash Chawla. The entire programming, OAP and Operations team would align and report to Rajadhyaksha.The duo will work closely with ZEEL – MD & CEO, Punit Goenka to bring Zee TV towards its leadership journey.

    Zee TV brings season 2 of ‘Dance Singapore Dance’

    MUMBAI: Zee TV, the flagship channel of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL), has announced the return of its highly popular reality dance competition, Dance Singapore Dance season 2. The open category competition is open to all residents of Singapore aged 16 and above, and aims to provide a platform for amateur and experienced dancers to showcase their talent. Pre-registration for the show has begun on www.apac.zeetv.com/dsd and auditions will take place on Saturday 28 of May 2016 at 9 am onwards at the La Salle College of the Arts, 1 McNally St, Singapore 187940.

    Zee TV Senior vice president International business Tripta Singh said, “We are delighted to return with Dance Singapore Dance S2 after a highly successful launch Season. This year we have increased the prize money for the winner to S$15,000 and included cash and other prizes for the first and second runners-up. After the finale of Season 1, we continued to groom the dancers and provided them with on-ground opportunities in the Asia Pacific region to perform and showcase their talents. Dance Singapore Dance is not just a TV show but a platform for aspiring dancers to take their talent to the next level”.

    Dance Singapore Dance is a localised version of the popular Dance India Dance series. Returning for its second season, the show will bring together aspiring dancers from different backgrounds and cultures from across Singapore. The winner and finalists from Season 1 were catapulted to fame with many of them gaining experience through various on-ground events organized by Zee TV and their partners.

    After the audition process on 28 May, the top 12 dancers will be shortlisted by an international panel of judges. These 12 will then get to train with some of the industry’s best choreographers and their performances will be featured on the show ‘Dance Singapore Dance Season 2’ on Zee TV, which will be broadcasted across 18 countries. The top three winners of the competition stand to win prizes of up to $20,000.

    From the audition rounds to the various studio challenges, the 12 episodes will culminate in one dancer winning the title of “Singapore’s Best Dancing Star”. The winner of Season 2 will take home S$15,000 and the First and Second Runners-Up will also be awarded prizes.

    Dance Singapore Dance S1 Winner Shahrin Johry:

    Shahrin Johry, 33, is the winner of Zee TV’s Dance Singapore Dance. A professional dancer/choreographer at Maya Dance Theatre, Shahrin recently concluded his full-length production, KA; he used a portion of his prize money from Dance Singapore Dance to produce the hour-long dance piece. While contributing to the local art scene, the production was a gift to his teachers who have taught him and moulded him to be an artist.

    A street dancer in his youth, Shahrin thirst for knowledge initiated him on a journey to learn different dance forms and genres, leading him to learn Bharathanatyam dance vocabulary for creation of works inspired from Asian aesthetics and dynamism and eventually enrolling in Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore to further hone his artistry.

    &TV opens new timeslot with daily soap Waaris starting 16 May

    MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) Hindi GEC &TV will start airing a new daily soap Waaris starting 16 May at the 700pm and will run Monday to Friday. With this, &TV has opened up its 700pm slot as primetime as against its previous primetime slot of 730pm. Waaris replaces the rerun of Begusarai. The show is presented by Patanjali Kesh Kanti and powered by Lemce Socks. Waaris is produced by Ashvini Yardi’s Vini Yard Films.

    Talking about the show, &TV business head Rajesh Iyer said, “With Waaris, we are now opening up a new time slot and further increasing our original programming hours. The concept of Waaris reflects certain social stigmas that are yet plaguing our society and we believe that a differentiated concept like this will certainly be able to find the share of heart amongst the audiences.”

    Vini Yard Films’ Yardi said, “Waaris deals with the cultural issue of the girl child in our country. The story deals with a strong mother who guards a fierce secret to protect her child and the well-being of the community they belong to. Set in the heartland of Punjab, Waaris touches your heart immediately through its rich story- telling and its stark characters.”

    Waaris is the story of a child Manpreet, who thoughtlessly obeys everything that his mother says without any questions asked. But his mother Amba had lied…Maa ne jhooth bola tha… and this lie is what sets the momentum of the show. While Manpreet is a girl in reality, her identity has been kept under the wraps and she is known as Amba’s son to the entire village. So starts the journey of Manpreet and the age old feud between the two warring landowners – the Pawanias and the Bajwas in proving their supremacy.     FY-16: Zeel’s revenue up 20 percent on higher ad, subscription revenue

    BENGALURU: The Subhash Chandra led content and broadcast player Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) reported a 19.8 per cent  hike revenue for the year ended 31 March 2016 (FY-16, current year) as compared to the previous year. The growth was driven by a 28.9 percent growth in Zeel’s advertising (ad) revenue, supplemented by a 14.7 percent growth in subscription revenue. Zeel reported consolidated revenue (Total income from operations, TIO) of Rs 5,851.46 crore in FY-16 as compared to Rs 4,883.65 crore in FY-15.

    Note: (1) The unit of currency in this report is the Indian rupee – Rs (also conventionally represented by INR). The Indian numbering system or the Vedic numbering system has been used to denote money values. The basic conversion to the international norm would be:
    (a) 100,00,000 = 100 lakh = 10,000,000 = 10 million = 1 crore.
    (b) 10,000 lakh = 100 crore = 1 arab = 1 billion.
    (2) All numbers in this report are consolidated unless stated otherwise.

    Ad revenue in the current year was Rs 3,429.64 (58.6 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 2,660.30 crore (54.5 percent of TIO) in the previous year. Subscription revenue in the current year was Rs 2,057.87 crore (35.2 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 1,793,48 crore (36.7 percent of TIO) in FY-15.

    Profit after tax (PAT) for the current year increased 5 percent to Rs 1,026.77 crore (17.5 percent margin) as compared to Rs 977.50 crore (20 percent margin) in FY-15.

    Zeel’s Operating profit (EBITDA) for FY-16 stood at Rs 1,509.55 crore (25.8 percent EBITDA Margin) which was 20.4 percent higher than the Rs 1,253.70 crore (25.7 percent EBIDTA margin).

    Total Expenditure in FY-16 increased 19.7 percent to Rs 4,425.95 crore (75.6 percent of TIO) from Rs 3,692.27 crore (75.7 percent of TIO).

    Numbers for Q4-16

    For the quarter ended 31 March 2016 (Q1-16, current quarter), TIO  increased 13.7 percent year-over-year (y-o-y) to Rs 1,531.62 crore from Rs 1,347.05 crore, but declined 4 percent quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) from Rs 1,595.08 crore in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Zeel reported 29.1 percent growth in y-o-y ad revenue to Rs 864.51 crore as compared to Rs 669.66 crore (47.7 percent of TIO). The current quarter’s ad revenue however declined 8.2 percent q-o-q from Rs 941.88 crore (59 per cent ofTIO).

    Subscription revenue in Q1-16 increased 16.4 percent y-o-y to Rs 594.41 crore (38.8 percent of TIO) as compared to Rs 510.77 crore (37.9 percent of TIO) in Q4-15 and increased 13.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 521.80 crore (32.7 percent of TIO) in Q3-16.

    PAT in the current quarter increased 6.9 percent y-o-y to Rs 260.61 crore (17 percent margin) from Rs 230.77 crore (17.1 percent margin), but declined 5.2 percent q-o-q from Rs 275 crore (17.2 percent margin).

    EBIDTA in the current quarter increased 52.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 413.57 crore (27 percent EBIDTA margin) from Rs 270.75 crore (20.1 percent margin), but declined 3.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 430.19 crore (27 percent EBIDTA margin).

    Total Expenditure in Q4-16 increased 4.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 1,145.38 crore (74.8 percent of TIO) from Rs 1,093.70 crore (78 percent of TIO), but declined 3.3 percent q-o-q from Rs 1,185.01 crore (74.3 percent of TIO) in Q3-16.

    EBIDTA in the current quarter increased 52.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 413.57 crore (27 percent EBIDTA margin) from Rs 270.75 crore (20.1 percent margin), but declined 3.9 percent q-o-q from Rs 430.19 crore (27 percent EBIDTA margin).

    Total Expenditure in Q4-16 increased 4.7 percent y-o-y to Rs 1,145.38 crore (74.8 percent of TIO) from Rs 1,093.70 crore (78 percent of TIO), but declined 3.3 percent q-o-q from Rs 1,185.01 crore (74.3 percent of TIO) in Q3-16.

    Sarah Coursey is Zee TV’s new global sales executive

    MUMBAI: The Global Syndication head of Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (Zeel) Sunita Uchil announced that new Regional head of Syndication, Sarah Coursey, will head ZEEL’s syndication sales for North America, LatAm and Canada. 

    Coursey held executive roles at Zodiak, M.E.G., Newzulu Ltd., and Distraction Formats, specializing in Format sales and acquisitions. Coursey has previously worked in the U.S., Italy, Germany, UK and Brazil; and is fluent in five languages.

    “We are very pleased that Sarah will join our team to handle syndication for the Americas. She brings with her a wealth of experience and a stellar reputation.  As Zee TV expands around the world, we are confident that Sarah will help tremendously to increase our footprint into the region.” said Uchil.

She supervised acquisitions from 34 production companies; managed the sales team and handled formats and films in her territories, selling The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Italy and France. She also created a format sales and acquisitions department for MEG (Media Entertainment Group), launching 20 formats on the international market, regularly liaising with the marketing, legal and operations departments and hiring agents to generate additional revenue. Coursey was also European Sales Manager at Distraction Formats.

    A dynamic communicator, Coursey has shared her industry expertise as a panelist and lecturer at NATPE, DISCOP, Rose d’Or and at the EBU. Coursey is the creator of Love at First Bite, which aired on Discovery Italy – Real Time Channel in 2013 as Ti Prendo per la Gola
