    ZEE5 maintains momentum with 56.3 mn MAU in third quarter

    MUMBAI: Media conglomerate Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) on Tuesday published its third quarter financial results with its OTT ZEE5 demonstrating continued growth.

    ZEEL’s super streamer clocked 56.3 mn monthly active users (MAU) as of December, with a 36 per cent increase since September 2018.

    “ZEE5 is scaling up in line with our expectations and is on course to become India's number one digital entertainment platform," said ZEEL chairman Subhash Chandra.

    Since its February 2019 launch, ZEE5 has adopted an aggressive content strategy, producing original shows in several genres including comedy, drama, reality, thriller, and docu-drama.

    According to ZEEL’s filing with the BSE, users currently spend an average of 31 minutes per day on the app. The platform delivered similar engagement numbers in Q2 as well.

    “ZEE5 is quickly establishing itself as a leading digital entertainment platform,” tweeted ZEEL MD and CEO Punit Goenka, who seemed pleased the OTT’s growth trajectory.

    “Our expanding list of partnerships with telecom operators and ecosystem players, coupled with innovation in pricing, will make ZEE5 accessible to a wider audience,” he added.

    Last year, ZEE5 signed content deals with telecom majors Reliance Jio and Airtel.

    In the first leg of its global rollout, the OTT platform has focussed on South Asian audience across the world.

    Both in international and domestic markets, ZEE5 is confident of scaling up on the back of regional content.

    Since the beginning, the platform has emphasised on content in the “language of comfort”. In line with its regional play, the platform also launched regional subscription packs for Tamil, Telugu and Kannada users.

    During the last quarter, ZEE5 launched Rangbaaz, Karenjit Kaur S2 and Babbar Ka Tabbar S2 in Hindi, Chitra Vichitram and B. Tech in Telugu, What’s Up Velakkari and Alarm in Tamil, Date with Saie in Marathi and Kaali in Bengali.

    Two flagship shows of the platform Karenjit Kaur, Rangbaaz have created quite a buzz in a short span.

    In a bid to strengthen its live offerings, ZEE5 also added a dedicated section for news and even live-streamed the very popular Sunburn music festival.

    MUMBAI: Zee5, the digital video streaming platform from ZEEL has partnered with Laqshya Media Group to promote their new original crime thriller, Rangbaaz. The campaign was targeted across four markets;  Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune and Lucknow and the media vehicle used are Large Impact Sites, Marquee Sites, Clusters to deliver/tell a story – famous dialogues from the show. The campaign which started on the 18th of December 2018 is spread on 108 units covering over 1 lakh sq. ft.

    Rangbaaz, the crime thriller series starring actor Saqib Saleem, Ranvir Shorey and Tigmanshu Dhulia set in the 90s, is based on the life of UP gangster Shiv Prakash Shukla and is one of the platforms biggest show that will be launched across 190 countries.

    MUMBAI: ZEE5, the OTT platform from the Zee group, has launched its second tentpole show Rangbaaz and has intentions of dubbing it in several Indian languages. ZEE5 India CEO Tarun Katial said it will release the show in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali and Malayalam by January.

    Katial also added that the target audience of this show is the millennial age group of 18 to 34. “This series has a fair amount of true-to-life engagement of the fact that how the youth can get betrayed by politics of the day and how they get swayed because of power and glamour and tend to lose life amongst that. While the story is of the '90s, it continues to happen day in and day out, without having found a solution here or anywhere in the world,” he commented on the show.

    Produced by JAR Pictures, Rangbaaz will premiere globally across 190 countries on 22 December. Inspired by real-life events, the nine-episode web series shows the journey of one of the most feared gangsters from Uttar Pradesh in the 90s.

    From series to films, ZEE5 has laid its hands over various type of original content in the last few months. Katial said in 2019 it wants to stay ahead of the race with digital originals while the volume is going to be bigger from what audience has seen in this year. He also mentioned that 2018 was the rising point of digital content in India given the volume, variety of stories, different characters came through this year from several platforms.

    The second biggest show of ZEE5 after Karenjit Kaur-An Untold Story will also have promotional backing in the form of a 360-degree campaign. Talking about the marketing strategy ZEE5 India business head Manish Aggarwal said, “We are doing interesting innovations in partnership with Google and Facebook where we are closely working with their in-house teams to create assets for Rangbaaz that we can leverage. That's also an industry first measure.”

    The platform will focus mostly on digital and outdoor marketing for this show. The outdoor campaign will run in the top six cities of the country. On digital it will use influencer platforms like YouTube, Facebook and the social media assets of ZEE5. There will be innovations in print medium as well as radio campaigns. Along with these common strategies, it will also do on-ground activities for creating buzz.

    MUMBAI: ZEE5 announced a line-up of eight Originals to strengthen its Tamil content offering – this will be a combination of web series as also movies. This will be complemented by the recently announced special subscription packs for the Tamil audience which includes Before TV content of popular ZEE Tamil shows, world digital premieres and Originals.

    ZEE5 Tamil Originals comprises of Original movies and shows across genres. The shows announced are What’s up Velakkari, Auto Shankar, Mitta, Postman and Thiravam.

    What’s up Velakkari will introduce you to a high intensity drama in the modern-urban space with three main protagonists – a husband and wife and their house maid. Auto Shankar is a web-series based on the true horrific incidents of six murders in two years committed by Shankar and his gang. Mitta revolves around two stoners who get themselves into different events of trouble. Postman is a story of a man who meets with an accident that puts him in a coma. 20 years later, he wakes up from the vegetative state and he sets out on a mission to deliver the letters that he couldn’t.     MUMBAI: Tejkaran Singh Bajaj has jumped to Mukesh Ambani-led Jio after quitting ZEE5 last month. The former ZEE5 original content head will now drive scripted original content across languages at his new position.

    Bajaj will serve the responsibility as Reliance Industries Ltd in-house studio head-scripted. He will look after web series as well as digital films.

    The media professional led ZEE5’s original content team across six languages. Karenjit Kaur, Lockdown, Life Sahi Hai 2, Kallachirippu , Kaali , B.Tech , Liftman and Utsaha Ithihasam (Malayalam) are some of the originals launched under his leadership among which the first one is the flagship show of ZEE5.

    Earlier he also worked with companies like Maxus, Miditech, NDTV and Aquarius Production.

Saie is unaware that the events in her life are actually being choreographed by him (stalker played by Rohit Kokate) to make a film.
