Zee puts up tough competition in Marathi space with ‘Yuva’

MUMBAI: A few weeks back, Viacom18 launched another general entertainment channel Colors Super to expand its reach in Karnataka market. Soon after, one of the leading media conglomerates, Zee Enterprises Entertainment LTD (ZEEL) announced new channel launch in Marathi space with Zee Yuva. Zee Networks’ Zee Yuva will be the new entrant in the Marathi space to encash the network’s upper hand in being a pioneer in the region.

The new channel will offer some light hearted refreshing content, which the channel claims is different from what the other players in the Marathi space currently offer. ZEEL’s regional language offerings within India are performing extremely well.

“We are able to leverage content strengths across the network by replicating successful formats. Our understanding of audiences is reflected in our leadership and improving network performance,” reads ZEEL annual reports 2015-16.

According the report, Zee Marathi maintains dominant leadership in Marathi general entertainment space with 50 per cent market share. The channel was once again the slot leader in all the nine prime time slots led by top rated fiction shows like Jai Malhar, Nanda Saukyabhare, Ratris Khel Chale and non-fiction shows such as Chala Hawa Yeun Dya and Home Minister.

In Maharashtra, 54.8 per cent is rural population whereas 45 per cent is urban population, as per Maharashtra Economic Survey. Zee Talkies and Zee Yuva business head Bavesh Janavlekar says, “In Maharashtra, 17 per cent of population is Marathi viewing audience, which means there is big chunk of the audience is consuming Marathi content. Hence, we thought there is scope to further explore the space with Zee Yuva.”

Zee Yuva will be the network’s fourth presentation in the Marathi genre. It already operates GEC Zee Marathi, movie channel Zee Talkies and news channel Zee 24 Taas.

The channel will be a paid and is scheduled to go on air from 22 August. With no particular restriction to TG, the channel will cater to all the age groups of Maharashtra. “It is not a youth centric channel; it is more about youthfulness, more about the value of forever young at heart. Therefore we didn’t put an age to it.”

While leading channels in the category like Zee Marathi, Colors Marathi and Star Pravah mostly target female audience in the state, off-late Marathi films aimed at the young people have also quite done well. ZEEL sees an opportunity in this. “We feel that there is huge opportunity to explore and grab the Marathi audiences, who are young at heart. We will target the heartland of Maharashtra,” claimed Janavlekar. He added, “Yuva is not about age. It’s about a mindset. So our content will be light with storylines revolving around friendship.”

With the launch of Zee Yuva, ZEEL is not only focusing on the Maharashtra but also planning to tap in the global Marathi audience through its digital platform Ditto TV.

Zee Yuva’s differentiated proposition is strengthened by its content that is distinctive and based on audience insights, which the international audience will relate to. “I feel that this new and innovative step will definitely win the hearts of the audience of Maharashtra. The audiences of Maharashtra have showered immense love on Zee Marathi, Zee Talkies and Zee Studios and I believe that the audiences will welcome the new channel Zee Yuva with the same love and warmth.”

The channel will start off with five fiction shows of different genres like college and romance. It would have a weekend show as well. There will be music in the morning and movies in the afternoon band. “We will have shows around music in the future. The primetime here will be 7 pm to 9.30 pm. We will have movie premieres every day, informed Janavlekar. The channel will also premiere Hollywood movies dubbed in Marathi.

Zee Yuva revealed the first look of its first show Love, Lagan and Locha. The channel has roped in production houses like Iris Production and I me Production for the content.

When it comes to attracting advertisers, he informed that it doesn’t matter if the brand is based in Delhi, Bangalore or Bombay as long as Maharashtra is the priority market for them, as the channel is positive to gain the confidence of audiences residing in the interiors of Maharashtra.

Fortunately there are many channels selling youthfulness to people. “We are focusing on maximizing the viewership on television and digitally and we know that brands will be on board therefore we are not too much worried about the brands. Primarily focus will be on building the viewership through differentiated content strategy.”

The channel’s digital campaigns were received well and had a reach of 5 million in a day. It also trended on Twitter and recorded 28.6 million impressions in a day. Apart from this the channel has more than 50,000 likes on Facebook.

Zee Yuva has also rolled out a music video composed by Jashraj Joshi, Hishikesh Datar, Saurabh Bhalerao, sung by Jashraj Joshi and Soniya Mundhe.

“We will be rolling out network promotions and non-network promotions followed by print and outdoor campaigns,”Janavlekar added in parting.

  • ‘Digitization helped us become Maharashtra’s No. 1 channel in reach:’ Bavesh Janavlekar

‘Digitization helped us become Maharashtra’s No. 1 channel in reach:’ Bavesh Janavlekar

MUMBAI: Even as the third phase of Dgiital Addressable System (DAS) is witnessing implementation issues across some states, the completion of Phase I and II has changed the broadcasting landscape to a large extent. One of the first genres to feel the benefits of digitization are the regional channels.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com about the same, Zee Talkies business head Bavesh Janavlekar says, “Earlier visibility of the channel was an issue in some of the areas but now with digitization, we don’t face that problem. Digitization helped us become the number one movie channel of Maharashtra and Phase III will also contribute considerably towards it.”

In the Marathi regional channels’ genre, Zee Talkies was in second spot in week 2 of Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India data. Speaking about the strategy to stay on top in the pecking order, Janavlekar says, “We ensure that when it comes to our channel, we continue to have high points, which are relevant to our audience. We also make sure that the audience remains engaged with our brand. It’s not only about watching Zee Talkies but also living it. Last year we had a contest in August – September wherein we received approximately 1.3 crore votes with people participating in our month long activity. One doesn’t get these kinds of numbers in Hindi mainline channels and hence the engagement is very important.”

While many free to air channels like Zee Anmol and Star Utsav benefitted with the roll out of BARC’s rural data, Janavlekar says that Zee Talkies’ viewership numbers drastically reduced in the all India data. Before the industry starts trading on the BARC all India data, which will in turn also see a change in advertising rates, the channel has addressed this issue with BARC. “We are in conversation with BARC to deal with the issues that we are facing. Ad rates on the Marathi regional genre have not really gone up,” he says.

Over the last couple of years, multiplexes have contributed immensely in the blossoming of regional cinema, specially Marathi films. While being critically acclaimed, movies have also been money churners at the box office. Some have even won National Awards. What’s more, this year the Marathi movie Court was India’s official entry to the Oscars. In the light of this development, the satellite rights of Marathi films have also seen a rise of approximately 10 – 20 per cent.

“While there has been a rise in satellite rights acquisition price of Marathi films, there have been only a few examples of movies crossing a certain threshold. But undoubtedly the movies are doing well and an increase in box office collections, is good news for us,” informs Janavlekar.

Explaining the dynamics of acquisition costs, he says that while the acquisition price of South Indian movies would be almost similar to Hindi movies, Marathi consumption was very exclusive. “There is a very minuscule population that watches only Marathi movies and 90 per cent of Maharashtrians in Maharashtra watch Hindi channels. However, that is not the case in the South, where only about 10 per cent of the population would watch Hindi channels,” he says.

On the programming front, Zee Talkies launched a first of its kind short film format for the audience of Maharashtra with Talkies Lighthouse. The band was launched earlier this month wherein a series of handpicked short films are telecast in a 90-minute format.

The short films will be showcased by television and theatre actor Lalit Prabhakar and Neha Mahajan from the Coffee Aani Barach Kahi fame.

“There are lot of beautiful Marathi movies in short format and the access to those films was primarily confined to the digital space. Being the number one movie channel in Maharashtra, we thought of giving a larger platform to those stories and storytellers to reach out to the audiences. Another objective was to unearth new talent for the industry via this initiative. We believe this is the right time for us to experiment,” says Janavlekar.

Come February, Zee Talkies will also invite people to participate in a contest after the series of short films are telecast. The contest will run from 20 February – 20 March and will ask people to send in their short films. The channel is planning to hold an on-ground film festival of the shortlisted entries.

Zee Talkies has roped in Hero Motocorp – Duet as the presenting sponsor along with Mcvities and Whisper as the co-powered by sponsors for Talkies Lighthouse. Apart from these, the channel also has Dish TV, Parachute and Santoor as associate sponsors.

“The response has been good as many P&G brands for the show including Gillette and Olay came onboard. While the whole initiative was not commercially driven, I think we need to have a case study to have a rigorous sales pitch for the next year. In terms of advertising, we are very fortunate that P&G brands came on board. However, having said that, there is a long way to go in terms of brands coming on board for such formats,” says Janavlekar.

Experiential marketing is the buzz word these days and not the one to be left behind, Zee Talkies has also adopted that route while targeting its audience. “We focus more on engagement activities and contests. Apart from that, we try to do a lot on the digital platforms around Zee Network’s properties. We don’t really go for print advertisement,” he says.

MUMBAI: Starting 10 January, Zee Talkies is all set to bring the short film format to the audience of Maharashtra with Talkies Lighthouse.

Zee Talkies business head Bavesh Janavlekar said, “This is the first ever initiative in the Marathi entertainment arena, and one that has been packaged differently. The output of Marathi films has accelerated in the last two – three years. We believe that there is a lot of talent, which is unexposed due to lack of opportunities. There are aspiring filmmakers who have limited access to the audiences even though with a good product in hand. Until now, we were only focusing on films and film-related events, and this is the first time we are exploring an innovative approach to launch short films in a show wrapped around entertainment.”

With its new identity, the channel will be premiering Double Seat and will also launch a new show called Talkies Lighthouse, which will showcase a collection of acclaimed short films, packaged in an entertaining format.
