    Zee tops TRA Research’s most attractive 2016 TV media brands list

    MUMBAI: Which are the most attractive TV media brands? Zee TV tops, while MTV is at No 2, and Star Plus, surprisingly is at third spot. Aaj Tak, NDTV, Colors, SAB, Zee News, ABP News, India TV are the rest in the Top in that specific order.

    At least that’s the finding of brand intelligence and data insights company, TRA Research, a part of the Comniscient Group, Most Attractive Brands 2016 report.

    For Punit Goenka and team Zee there’s many reasons to celebrate. Brand Zee TV has risen 116 places to 93 in the overall list of India’s most attractive brands (as compared to the 2015 ranking), while it ranks number 1 in the Hindi GEC category. Star Plus too has improved drastically by 163 places to rank at 110. But it is placed at No 2 in the Hindi GEC category. Colors which dropped 37 places to rank at 349 overall, is at the third spot in the GEC category.

    What’s surprising is that the mired in controversy NDTV has ranked No1 in the most attractive channel cluster category with the Zee Network coming in at No 2 and TV9 at No 3.

    Aaj Tak is numero uno in Hindi news, while Zee News ranks second and ABP News is a third spot.

    BBC has proved to be the most attractive international news TV brand for 2016, followed by CNN and NBC.

    Amongst kids channels, Disney Channel has taken pole position.

    This year, LG has unseated Samsung from the top spot and the smartphone maker has slipped to the third rank. LG is followed by Sony in the top 20.

    “The survey was conducted in 16 cities across India,” said TRA Research CEO N Chandramouli.

    Patanjali has emerged right on top in the fast moving consumer coods (FMCG) – diversified sub-category. In the FMCG sector, Baba Ramdev’s brand stands at 12, whereas in the overall rankings, it has taken the lead in the chart by 284 ranks to 87th as compared to last year’s 371.

    Amazon’s aggressive growth over the past year or so has seen it go past popular search engine Google to claim the top spot. In the overall attractive brands chart, Amazon has entered the top 100 club at 96th rank, while Google trails it at 102nd rank. Indian e-commerce portal Flipkart is far behind at 125th, but up from previous year’s 346.

    R.K.Arora bids adieu to Zee Media

    MUMBAI: Executive director and CEO of Zee Media R.K. Arora has stepped down from his role. A source close to the development has confirmed this development to indiantelevision.

    Arora was appointed as an additional director and CEO of the company for a period of three years with effect from May 24, 2016 soon after the chairman of the Essel Group of companies Subhash Chandra resigned from the post of director and non-executive chairman of Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL).

    Arora was responsible for the various news channels under ZMCL that included WION, Zee News, Zee Business, India 24×7, Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal, Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, Zee 24 Taas, 24 Ghanta, Zee Kalinga News, Zee Purvaiya, and Zee Rajasthan News.

    Before joining ZMCL, Arora was the CEO of News Nation. He earlier was with ITV Network where he managed the overall operations of its seven channels.

    Updates on Arora’s successor is still awaited.

    Meanwhile, the whole Essel/Zee group is undergoing a restructuring. The group recently appointed a new chief executive for Zee Entertainment’s domestic broadcast business in Punit Misra, while Amit Goenka continues to be the CEO-International for ZEEL. Zee’s parent Essel has formed a new entity, Essel Business Excellence, which will take care of many of the common responsibilities of the group companies.Another business unit, Zee Unimedia, will not only look after ad sales of Zee’s digital platforms but also its TV channels, while scouting around for outside work too in the long run, if media reports are to be believed.

    DD Free Dish looking for tenant?

    MUMBAI: Pubcaster Doordarshan is looking for a tenant for a vacant slot it has on its Free Dish platform. The condition it has laid out for this is that it should become an occupant only for the month of August. And the cost of doing so: Rs 4.90 crore for the month.

    DD has issued an email circular – a copy of which has reached indiantelevision.com today – wherein it has asked private broadcasters to send in their expression of interest to take up the vacant slot. It, however, has cautioned that the carriage fee needs to be paid in advance along with service tax. It has also stated that the slot will be filled on a first come first serve basis.

    DD Free Dish has a bouquet of 104 video channels and 51 radio channels, according to the updated channel list (till 2 August 2016) on its website.

    DD Free Dish which is beaming DD Direct Plus/Free Dish off GSAT-15 at 93.5 East has a total of six – five in MPEG-2 and one in MPEG-4 – transponder frequencies for its service.

    The DTH provider added Zee News on Free Dish on 1 August after it won the e-auction on 28 July 2016. The Hindi news channel is also available as a FTA on Dish TV.

    NEW DELHI: Zee News, which recently became free-to-air, has bagged a slot on Doordarshan’s FTA platform Freedish.

    Zee News was the lone channel to win the bid in the auction, for which the reserve price was 4.3 crore.

    When approached, a senior DD official refused to give the figure at which the channel won the auction, as the exact amount after various adjustments was not yet clear.

    Meanwhile, Freedish – which currently carries eighty TV channels and 23 radio channels – will hold its 29th auction on 11 August 2016.

    It also carries two channels as FTA which are otherwise pay channels – Aajtak and Big TV.

    The official clarified to indiantelevision.com that Freedish will be able to carry more channels as it is shortly going on to MPEG4. While it could carry about sixteen channels per transponder but MPEG 4 allows up to 24 TV channels per transponder, apart from radio channels.

    The official said the Indian conditional access system (iCAS) is being used to keep a tab on the number of subscribers, but it would remain free-to-air.

    The reserve price which had been Rs 3.7 crore was raised to its present level for the 25th e-auction in January. indiantelevision.com had learnt that the bid amount went up to Rs 4.7 crore in earlier e-auctions. The reserve price in the 15th e-auction was Rs 3 crore and was raised to Rs 3.7 crore in the 16th auction.

    The platform at present has space for eighty channels including its own channels and Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha TV and also carrues 24 All India Radio channels.

    The e-Auction was conducted by M/s. C1 India Pvt. Ltd., Noida which also conducted the first stage of the FM Radio Phase III auctions on behalf of Prasar Bharati.

    The eligibility terms and conditions including other relevant details for this e-Auction are displayed on DD website: www.ddindia.gov.in.

    The participation amount (EMD) in the e-Auction is Rs.1.5 crore which will be deposited in advance before or by 12 noon on 11 August along with processing fee of Rs.10,000 (Non-refundable) in favour of PB (BCI) Doordarshan Commercial Service, New Delhi.

    Incremental amount for the auction will be Rs 10 lakh and the time for every slot e-auction will be of fifteen minutes duration. This may be extended by five minutes if a bid is received before the closing time.

    Of the reserve price, Rs 1.1 crore will be deposited within one month of placement and another Rs 1.1 crore within two months along with service tax of 14.5 per cent on the bid amount.

    The balance bid amount will be deposited within six months, failing which the deposited amount will be forfeited and the channel discontinued after a 21-day discontinuation notice.
