    Q2-17: Zee Media operating profit up

    BENGALURU: The Essel Group’s news network Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL) reported more than double (2.47 times) year-over-year (y-o-y) operating profit (Simple EBIDTA) for the quarter ended 30 September 2016 (Q2-17, current quarter) . The company reported EBIDTA of Rs 18 crore (14.3 per cent of Total Income from Operations or TIO) in Q2-17 as compared to Rs 7.28 crore (5.7 per cent of TIO) in the corresponding year ago quarter. The company’s EBIDTA grew 1.6 per cent quarter-over-quarter (q-o-q) from Rs 17.71 crore (13.8 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter.

    Revenue breakup

    ZMCL’s TIO in the current quarter was almost flat y-o-y as well as q-o-q. The company reported 0.7 per cent y-o-y decline in Q2-17 at Rs 126.15 crore as compared to Rs 127.05 crore and a 1.6 per cent q-o-q decline from Rs 128.24 crore.

    ZMCL reported an 8.3 per cent y-o-y growth in advertising revenue in Q2-17 at Rs 98.24 crore (77.9 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 90.69 crore, but a 4 per cent q-o-q decline from Rs 102.35 crore. Advertising revenue from ZMCL’s existing channels increased 17.7 per cent y-o-y in Q2-17 to Rs 77.63 crore from Rs 65.93 crore but declined 3 per cent q-o-q from Rs 80.01 crore. Advertising revenue from new channels increased 6.3 per cent y-o-y in Q2-17 to Rs 7.08 crore from Rs 6.66 crore, but declined 2.9 per cent q-o-q from Rs 7.29 crore

    Since 1 June, 2016, the company’s flagship channel Zee News became free-to-air (FTA). Subscription revenue in the current quarter declined 39.9 per cent y-o-y to Rs 16.37 crore (13 per cent of TIO) from Rs 27.24 crore (21.4 per cent of TIO) and declined 8.4 per cent q-o-q from Rs 17.89 crore (14 per cent of TIO).

    Subscription revenues from Existing channels declined 42.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 14.09 crore from Rs 24.44 crore and declined 9 per cent q-o-q from Rs 15.48 crore.

    Other sales and services revenue increased 26.8 per cent q-o-q to Rs 11.55 crore (9.2 per cent of TIO) from Rs 9.11 crore (7.2 per cent of TIO) and increased 44.4 per cent from Rs 8 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. Other revenues for existing channels declined 45.9 per cent y-o-y to Rs 1.77 crore from Rs 3.27 crore, but increased 14.2 per cent from Rs 1.55 crore.

    Revenue from ZMCL’s Television Broadcasting Busin ess (TV Business) was flat y-o-y (increased by 0.3 per cent) at Rs 100.57 crore as compared to Rs 100.30 crore, but declined 3.6 per cent q-o-q from Rs 104.34 crore. The TV Business reported more than sevenfold (7.41 times) y-o-y increase in operating profit at Rs 13.89 crore as compared to Rs1.88 crore, but a 6.1 per cent q-o-q decline from Rs 104.34 crore.

    Revenue from ZMCL’s print business was almost flat (increased 0.7 per cent) y-o-y at Rs 30.26 crore vis-à-vis Rs 30.03 crore and increased 4.3 per cent q-o-q from Rs 29 crore. The business reported lower y-o-y operating loss of Rs 5.88 crore as compared to Rs 6.86 crore. ZMCL’s print business had reported a lower operating loss of Rs 3.79 crore in Q1-17.

    A look at the other numbers reported by ZMCL

    ZMCL reported a lower y-o-y loss of Rs 18.04 crore in the current quarter as compared to a loss of Rs 19.86 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. The company had reported a profit after tax of Rs 0.09 crore for the immediate trailing quarter. In may be noted that ZMCL has incurred an exceptional loss of Rs 18.88 crore due to sale of land and buildings of a subsidiary in the current quarter.

    The company has controlled its total expenditure in Q2-17, which declined 11 per cent y-o-y to Rs 118.22 crore (93.7 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 132.79 crore (104.5 per cent of TIO) and was 2.2 per cent lower q-o-q as compared to Rs 120.83 crore.

    Cost of Raw materials consumed in the current quarter declined 18 per cent y-o-y to Rs 10.32 crore (8.2 per cent of TIO) as compared to Rs 12.59 crore (9.9 per cent of TIO) but was 2.1 per cent more q-o-q than Rs 10.11 crore (7.9 per cent of TIO).

    Employee Benefits Expenses in the current quarter declined 19.8 per cent y-o-y to Rs 30.45 crore (24.1 per cent ofTIO) from Rs 31.92 crore (29.9 per cent of TIO) and was 4.6 per cent lower q-o-q than the Rs 38.60 crore (24.9 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter.

    ZMCL’s Marketing, Distribution and Business Promotion Expenses (Marketing expenses) in the current quarter declined 45.9 per cent y-o-y to Rs 13.52 crore (10.7 per cent of TIO) from Rs 24.97 crore (19.6 per cent of TIO) and declined 15.8 per cent q-o-q from Rs 16.05 crore (12.5 per cent of TIO).

    Operational costs in Q2-17 increased 11.4 per cent y-o-y to Rs 23.55 crore (18.7 per cent of TIO) from Rs 21.14 crore (16.6 per cent of TIO) and increased 26.1 per cent q-o-q from Rs 18.67 crore (14.6 per cent of TIO).

    Other expense in Q2-17 increased 31.3 per cent y-o-y to Rs 30.31 crore (24 per cent of TIO) from Rs 23.08 crore (18.2 per cent of TIO) but declined 21.3 per cent q-o-q from Rs 38.51 crore (30 per cent of TIO).

    FY-16: Zee Media board proposes 15 percent dividend

    BENGALURU: The board of Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), the erstwhile Zee News Limited has recommended payment of equity dividend of Re. 0.15/- per equity share of Re. 1/- each (equivalent to 15 percent on the paid up equity capital), to the equity shareholders for the year ended 31 March 2016 (FY-16, current year). Despite almost flat standalone (up by 0.9 percent) revenue in FY-16 as compared to FY-15, the company has reported more than triple the stand alone profit at Rs 18.75 crore (4.9 percent PAT margin) as compared to Rs 6.17 crore (1.6 percent margin). The company has reported a drop in expenses for the current year as compared to the previous year.

    ZMCL reported standalone total income from operations (revenue, TIO) of Rs 383.61 crore in FY-16 as compared to Rs 380.33 crore in FY-15.

    On a consolidated basis, TIO declined marginally by 0.3 percent to Rs 542.91 crore in the current fiscal from Rs 544.33 crore in FY-15. The company reported consolidated profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 2.87 crore in the current year as compared to a consolidated loss before tax of Rs 55.51 crore in FY-15.

    Revenue from ZMCL’s Television segment in FY-16 increased 3 percent to Rs 434.59 crore from Rs 422.12 crore in FY-15. ZMCL’s Television segment reported EBIDTA of Rs 79.99 crore in the current year as compared to Rs 59.57 crore in the previous year.

    Revenue from the print segment declined 24.4 percent to Rs 108.53 crore in FY-16 from Rs 143.62 crore in FY-15. Print segment reported an operating loss of Rs 0.2 crore as compared to an operating loss of Rs 21.41 crore in FY-15.

    ZMCL’s advertising revenue in FY-16 increased 1.8 percent to 401.15 crore from Rs 393.88 crore in FY-15. Advertising revenue from existing television channels in FY-16 increased 1.3 percent to Rs 302.12 crore as compared to Rs 296.74 crore in FY-15. Advertising revenue from new channels in FY-16 more than doubled (2.02 times) to Rs 29.71 crore from Rs 13.81 crore in FY-15.

    Subscription revenue in the current year declined 9.8 percent to Rs 102.39 crore from Rs 113.54 crore in the previous year. Other sales and services revenue in FY-16 increased 6.7 percent to Rs 39.37 crore as compared to Rs 36.91 crore in FY-15.

    Total consolidated expense in FY-16 declined 8.1 percent to Rs 465.12 crore from Rs 506.17 crore.

    Cost of goods and operations in FY-16 declined 15.8 percent to Rs 132.87 crore from Rs 157.90 crore. Employee cost in the current year declined 8.3 percent to Rs 147.35 crore from Rs 160.66 crore in FY-15. Other expenses declined 1.4 percent to Rs 184.90 crore in FY-15 from Rs 187.61 crore in the previous year.

    ZMCL q-o-q PAT up 53 per cent for Q3-2014

    BENGALURU: Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), the erstwhile Zee News Limited, reported a 53.36 per cent growth in PAT for Q3-2014 at Rs 5.92 crore as compared to the Rs 3.86 crore for Q2-2014. Operating revenue for Q3-2014 at Rs 91.68 crore was 10.4 per cent more than the Rs 83.02 crore for the immediate trailing quarter.

     

    However, year on year, the company’s Q3-2014 PAT was almost half (52 per cent) the PAT for the corresponding quarter of the last fiscal.  ZMCL had reported Operating revenue of Rs 85.84 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    Let us look at the other figures reported by ZMCL

     

    ZMCL has three revenue streams – advertising; subscription; and other sales and services. Advertising revenue for Q3-2014 at Rs 61.39 crore was 16 per cent more than the Rs 52.9 crore for immediate trailing quarter and 3 per cent more than the Rs 59.56 crore for the corresponding quarter of last year.

     

    Subscription revenue rose by 8.4 per cent for Q3-2014 to Rs 27 crore from Rs 24.9 crore for Q2-2014 and 21.6 per cent as compared to the Rs 22.2 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    Revenue from other sales and services for Q3-2014 at Rs 3.29 crore fell by 36.7 per cent from Rs.5.2 crores for Q2-2014 and fell by 19.1 per cent as compared to the Rs 4.07 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    Operating expenditure (Expenditure without depreciation and amortisation) for Q3-2014 at Rs 77.38 crore was 2.4 per cent more than the Rs 75.54 crore for Q2-2014 and 17 per cent more than the Rs 66.17 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    ZMCL spent 5.6 per cent more during Q3-2014 at Rs 15.75 crore towards marketing, distribution and promotional expense as compared to the Rs 14.91 crore for Q2-2014 and 2.9 per cent more than the Rs 15.31 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    Employee benefit expense for Q3-2014 at Rs 26.06 crore was 5.7 per cent more than the Rs 24.66 crore for Q2-2014 and 14.5 per cent higher than the Rs 22.76 crore for Q3-2013.

     

    Depreciation and amortisation expense for Q3-2014 was Rs 3.91 crore, for Q2-2014 Rs 3.52 crore, and for Q3-2013 Rs 2.87 crore.

     

    ZMCL non-executive chairman of the Board Subhash Chandra, said “Even as the global and domestic macro-economic environment poses challenges to growth, the private sector in the country has  shown immense resilience to tide over the short term problems of a sluggish economy. Our new channels launched in the current financial year have had significant growth in viewership with Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh becoming number two channel in a few months of its launch and Zee Marudhara increasing its GVTs by over four times in the quarter as opposed to the previous one. New Media growth numbers too have been encouraging with zeenews.com registering an increase of 28.2 per cent in visits.”

     

    ZMCL whole-time director, Alok Agarwal said, “It has been an action packed quarter for us here at ZMCL. We have restaged Zee News channel with refreshed programming and look and feel. The channel now is more contemporary and youth-oriented. The channel, post restaging, has increased its weekly TVTs by about 18 per cent in the last four weeks of the quarter. Our other national channel Zee Business also has performed exceedingly well by developing non-stock market hours viewership and has almost two and a half times viewership of all the English Business news channels put together. Our Network-wide initiative Bharat Bhagya Vidhaata also has had a great response especially from New Age consumers with #BBV reaching 19.9 million.”

    ZMCL reports 112 per cent PAT growth in Q1-2014 compared to Q1-2013

    BENGALURU: Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL), formerly Zee News Limited announced good growth figures for Q1-2014 as compared to Q1-2013, but middling to flat and lower results when compared to the previous quarter Q4-2013. The Company owns and operates seven news/current affairs and regional language channels, namely Zee News, Zee Business, Zee 24 Taas, Zee 24 Gantalu, Zee Uttar Pradesh Uttarakhand, Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh and Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal.

     

    Let us take a look at the Q1-2014 figures

     

    ZMCL reported more than doubling of PAT (112 per cent) to Rs 8.51 crore in Q1-2014 as compared to PAT of Rs 4.01 crore in Q1-2013 and a 6.1 per cent growth as compared to Q4-2013.

     

    Operating revenues grew 12.2 per cent (y-o-y) to Rs 77.68 crore in Q1-2014 as compared to Rs 68.88 crore reported in Q1-2013. However, ZMCL’s operating revenues for Q1-2014 were 1.7 per cent lower than the Rs 79.04 crore reported for Q4-2013. Income from operations at Rs 70.2 crore in Q1-2014 grew 16.4 per cent from Rs 60.286 crore in Q1-2013.

     

    Advertising revenues which constituted 68.1 per cent of the total revenues for Q1-2014 grew 14.2 per cent (y-o-y) to Rs 52.9 crore as compared to Rs 46.32 crore (67.2 per cent of total revenues for the quarter) in Q1-2013 and were up 1.4 per cent as compared to the Rs 52.19 crore (66 per cent of the total revenues for the quarter) reported in Q4-2013.

     

    Subscription revenues in Q1-2014 also grew, albeit at a higher rate of 19.3 per cent to Rs 21 crore (27 per cent of the total revenues for the quarter) as compared to the Rs 17.6 crore (25.6 per cent of the total revenues for the quarter) reported for Q1-2013, but were 5.4 per cent lower than the Rs 22.2 crore (28.1 per cent of total revenues for the quarter) ZMCL reported for Q4-2013.

     

    Other sales and services saw a drop of 23.2 per cent to Rs 3.78 crore in Q1-2014 from Rs 4.96 crore reported in Q1-2013 and were 19.2 per cent lower than the Rs 4.68 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    In Q1-2014, total expenses saw a small jump of 7.6 per cent to Rs 68.37 crore from the Rs 63.55 crore reported in Q1-2013 and were 8.1 per cent lower than the Rs 74.4 crore for Q4-2013.

     

    ZMCL director Punit Goenka said, “Our ambition to reach deeper into the lives of our viewers has led us to change our name from Zee News Limited to Zee Media Corporation Limited. We will continue to pursue growth in the untapped regions of our country and provide them with varied news, infotainment and entertainment content across delivery platforms. Apart from the latest launch of Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, we have also launched Zee Rajasthan recently. The channel has content for all facets of the viewer from Rajasthan, be it crisper local news bulletins, entertainment programmes reflecting the typical lifestyle or discussions on issues related to the common Rajasthani man.”

     

    ZMCL whole-time director Alok Agrawal said, “Even as we are aggressively expanding our regional channel bouquet, we have not left sight of our current deliverables. We have made efforts to squeeze even more efficiency out of our operations and have restricted increase of various costs. On the other hand, both Advertising and Subscription Revenues have shown an increase over the last year. We have taken special initiatives related to the content which are expected to yield results in the coming quarters.”

    Demerged Zee Tele to start trading from 18 December

    MUMBAI: Zee Telefilms Limited (ZTL) today said that the demerged shares of the company would start trading on the stock exchanges from 18 December.

    This follows the hiving off, effective 22 November, of the cable and the regional and news broadcasting businesses into Wire & Wireless India Limited (WWIL) and Zee News Limited (ZNL) respectively. WWIL and ZNL will get listed on the bourses in January, the company announced.

    Demerged ZTL (including the DTH business undertaking) would continue to trade on the stock exchanges. A separate record date would be announced for the demerger of the DTH business of ZTL into ASC Enterprises Limited, to be renamed Dish TV India Limited (Dish), it was announced.

    The process of getting approval for the demerger of the DTH business is under way, the release adds.

    Zee Group chairman Subhash Chandra stated, “From 18th December, Zee Telefilms Limited would start trading as the demerged entity (to be renamed Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited) and two new companies would start their journey as independently listed entities. Though the business of both WWIL and ZNL was earlier part of ZTL, they would be able to unlock greater shareholder value as independent companies.”

    Zee has already received approval of its demerger scheme by the Bombay High Court.

    Shareholders of ZTL would receive 45 shares of ZNL and 50 shares of WWIL for every 100 shares held in ZTL. As for Dish 100 shares in ZTL would translate into net 57 shares, implying effective shareholding of 57 per cent.
