  • Dekkho: Integration ease aids Brightcove power OTT service

MUMBAI: Brightcove, a leading provider of cloud services for video, announced today that Dekkho, a streaming video service specializing in delivering premium content from India’s top content creators, has selected Brightcove to power its OTT service. The service, which debuted in February 2017, was built on Brightcove Video Cloud, enabling Dekkho to leverage an industry-leading online video platform to offer consumers VOD access to 12,000 hours of programming across desktop and mobile applications.

Dekkho provides its customers with a curated, high-quality video experience with video content ranging from three to 45 minutes. It partners with leading content producers such as Sony Music, Zee Music, Culture Machine, Times Group, and OML.

“Brightcove constantly remains ahead of the curve, rapidly innovating to incorporate and leverage the constant changes in the online video industry,” said Dekkho co-founder Vinay Pillai.

“Scalability was most critical for us. We need to deliver our content across a broad range of customers, from those with low-end phones and slow internet connections to people with high-end mobile devices and larger screens. Not only has Brightcove enabled us to do that technically, but their service has been outstanding. We were promised Tier-1 support and Brightcove has delivered.”

Improving the viewing experience is one of the top challenges facing media organizations in 2017, and Dekkho required a platform with robust APIs that was easy for their application development team to leverage; in particular, the publisher was eager to integrate the video platform with its CMS for simpler ingestion of its videos. The scalability of the Brightcove platform, along with integrations with the majority of the content management systems (CMS), ad networks, and CDNs differentiated Brightcove from other providers.

“Dekkho is yet another great example of the rise of OTT in India. They’ve managed to quickly launch an intuitive and unique experience, and we’re looking forward to being part of their success,” said Brightcove Asia VP Tomer Azenkot. “Brightcove is excited to be working with this innovative service and helping the company as online video consumption in India evolves.”

  • Zing sings a new tune

    Zing sings a new tune

MUMBAI: Zing, the music channel from Zee Entertainment, has undergone a complete change in look and strategy for the fourth time starting 1 April, since its inception in 1997.

With the new rebranding, the channel aims to strengthen its position in the 15-24 year olds by adding fresh music and new fiction content to the current programming. The new positioning is targeted at strengthening Zing’s position in the minds of the youth.

The channel was revamped earlier as Zee Muzic and Music Asia. However, explaining the rationale behind the new positioning, ZEE Niche Channels EVP & business head Anurag Bedi said, “Today’s youth believe in living out loud. They believe in carving their own niche and learning from their own experiences instead of relying on others. They would rather make their own mistake and learn from that than not follow their heart. This is exactly what we would like to reiterate through our positioning. We want them to live with a zing, to live ‘ekdum’ awesome!”

In terms on content, Zing now plans to venture into the space of fiction shows. According to the statement released earlier, these shows are set to epitomise the spirit and lifestyle of the youth across the country. The first show will be launched in the month of May and will be in line with the channel’s new positioning. An hourly block of content will be created, which will be increased as the year progresses. Apart from that, a refreshed library of Bollywood music will be interspersed with the existing programming.

The channel has also tied up with the film 2 States and has roped in the lead pair Alia Bhatt & Arjun Kapoor for a promotional video.  The channel, with its all new avatar and promising new fiction shows will keep the youth hooked and wanting more.

  • Zee Music to launch a new programme ‘B News’

Zee Music to launch a new programme ‘B News’

NEW DELHI : Zee Music today announced the launch of its brand new programme on Bollywood, B News, which promises to get the ‘under belly of Bollywood” for the viewers for the first time. B News, is all about the glamour, the scandals, the fights, the love stories, the make ups, the break ups, the tensions, the laughter, the tears and the fears, that makes every celebrity in the world of glitz and glamour, the ‘different’ people that they are! People who are not like the rest of us . People who do not talk the normal talk, or walk the normal walk, like other ordinary citizens,” an official of Zee TV said.

B News promise also to be a “show that will perhaps open the doors to the paparazzi”. It will “capture the uncaptured moments of Bollywood”, Irshwin Balvani, Business Head of Zee Music said.

However, it will be a largely diluted version of what the paparazzi does the world around. On asked how close to the under belly of Bollywood the channel would get, and if they are planning the sort of kiss-‘n-tell work that has become a hazard to celebrities, Balvani retracted and said that “we would leave their private lives to themselves”. Paparazzi can do two kinds of work, he averred: one that harms the celebrities and the other that brings out the humans in them, “the same way they are much normal people as we are”, Balvani held.

Asked how they will be different from other channels and newspapers that also cover Bollywood, Balvani said that they would have a lot of features unlike in the other media, where they only serve news. Gossip? Yes, gossip too, Balvani said, saucy, but not raunchy; “gossip that is fact-based, not something cooked up by someone”. If that seems anachronistic, so be it. Will that satiate the kind of appetite that B News is trying to whip up? The assembled media persons remained sceptical and B News did not have too many clear cut answers, and did not divulge any of the specific programmes that the new programme will host.

“We are launching the programme from December 1 and shooting has started two months ago,” Balvani revealed. The show will be co-hosted by Zee Music’s old hand Vikas Bhalla and “sultry, sexy, saucy” Nethra Raghuraman, both of who were present at the press meet. What was the criterion for the choice of hosts? Balvani said that Bhalla had been with Zee Music for the past one and half years. “In choosing the female partner for Vikas, we gave primacy to a person who could speak.

“Nethra has been a model but more importantly, she has done a few films and knows how Bollywood functions and will be able to articulate well.” It seems that Zee Music is keeping its programming aspect on B News guarded. But given the fact – which Balvani admitted to – that Indian sensibilities did not allow much raunchy programming, not even too much of real-life scandal, there could more hype than substance in the new programme.

  • Zee Telefilms mulls an entry into China

Zee Telefilms mulls an entry into China

MUMBAI: Foreign media companies seem to have hit a wall when it comes to China. Star Group, for example, continues to bleed in that market despite pumping in big money for years. This, however, has not stopped global firms from eyeing a slice of the cake that a 1.3 billion population promises.

Subhash Chandra is the latest media baron willing to throw his hat in the ring. Zee Telefilms Ltd. (ZTL) is planning to enter China, the toughest market to crack with its tight controls on foreign media.

“We will be entering that market. We have not yet applied for the landing rights. It will take time and we expect it to happen sometime towards the end of this fiscal,” says Essel Group chief executive officer of corporate strategy Rajiv Garg.

Though Zee plans to have a presence in China in the broadcasting space, it has not yet finalised on what content and channel it should set up to lure viewers. ZTL chairman Chandra recently said Zee would launch a dubbed movie channel in Russia.

ZTL also plans to launch in Afghanistan, Cambodia and Indonesia to expand its international operations which account for almost one-fourth of the company’s revenues. Running businesses which have matured in the UK and US, Zee’s strategy is to launch dedicated channels in certain markets which it has identified. The company has stitched a deal with Malaysia’s multi-channel pay TV operator Astro to create a channel with Hindi content drawn from Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee Music and Trendz for the Indonesian, Malaysian and Brunei audiences. For tapping youth audiences in the Arab region, Zee also has launched Zee Arabiya, a music and lifestyle channel.

Global media companies like News Corp, Time Warner and Viacom see China as a fertile revenue market in the long term, though it is currently spoilt by heavy-handed regulation on foreign media.
