    Zee Learn reports lowered results for Q3-2015

    BENGALURU: The Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (Zee Learn) reported lowered results for Q2-2015. Total Income from operations (TIO) for Q3-2015 at Rs 19.84 crore was 12.8 per cent less than the Rs 22.76 crore in Q2-2015 and 12.6 per cent less than the Rs 22.70 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. For 9M-2015, Zee Learn’s TIO at Rs 79.90 crore was 0.3 percent less than the Rs 80.13 crore in 9M-2014.

     PAT for Q3-2015 at Rs 1.09 crore (5.5 per cent of TIO) was 4 per cent less than Rs 1.14 crore (5 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015). In Q2-2014, the company had reported a loss of Rs 3.38 crore. For 9M-2015 PAT at Rs 5.8 crore (7.3 per cent of TIO) was more than 14 times (14.4 times) the PAT of Rs 0.40 crore (0.5 percent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

     Let us look at the other Q3-2015 and 9M-2015 figures reported by Zee Learn

     

     Zee Learn’s Total expenditure (TE) in Q3-2015 at Rs 16.91 crore (85.2 per cent of TIO) was 11.8 per cent less than the Q2-2015 TE at Rs 19.18 crore (84.3 per cent of TIO) and was 29.6 per cent lower than the Rs 24 crore (105.7 per cent of TIO) in Q3-2014. 9M-2015 TE at Rs 62.76 crore (78.6 per cent of TIO) was 18.8 per cent less than the Rs 77.27 crore (96.4 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

     The company’s marketing, advertisement and publicity expense (marketing expense) in Q3-2105 at Rs 1.41 crore (7.1 per cent of TIO) was 11.1 per cent less than the Rs 1.58 crore (6.9 per cent of TIO) in the immediate trailing quarter and was 28.3 per cent less than the Rs 1.95 crore (8.6 per cent of TIO) in Q3-2014. Marketing expense in 9M-2015 at Rs 5.45 crore (6.8 per cent of TIO) was 26.7 per cent lower than the Rs 7.44 crore (9.6 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

    Employee Benefit Expense (EBE) for Q3-2015 at Rs 6.33 crore was 8.4 per cent more than the Rs 5.84 crore (25.7 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 14.4 per cent lower than the Rs 7.4 crore (32.6 per cent of TIO) in the year ago quarter.  EBE for 9M-2015 at Rs 18.91 crore (23.7 per cent of TIO) was 18.6 per cent lower than the Rs 23.22 crore (32.6 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

    Operating cost in Q3-2015 at Rs 0.75 crore (3.8 per cent of TIO) was 47 per cent more than the Rs 0.51 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 8.4 per cent lower than the Rs 0.82 crore (3.6 per cent of TIO) in Q3-2014. In 9M-2015, operating cost at Rs 1.94 crore (2.4 per cent of TIO) was 19.8 per cent lower than the Rs 2.42 crore (3 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

    Depreciation and amortisation expense (depreciation) in Q3-2015 at Rs 1.51 crore (7.6 per cent of TIO) was 10.1 per cent lower than the Rs 1.67 crore (7.4 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 13.1 per cent lower than the Rs 1.73 crore (7.6 per cent of TIO) in Q3-2014. 9M-2015 depreciation at Rs 5.13 crore (6.4 per cent of TIO) was 2.2 per cent more than the Rs 5.02 crore (6.3 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

     

     Other expense in Q3-2015 at Rs 4.31 crore (21.7 per cent of TIO) was 21.4 per cent less than the Rs 5.49 crore (24.1 percent of TIO) in Q2-2015 and was 27.4 per cent lower than the Rs 5.94 crore (26.2 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. Operating cost in 9M-2015 at Rs 15.78 crore (19.7 per cent of TIO) was 8.8 per cent lower than the Rs 17.30 crore (21.6 per cent of TIO) in 9M-2014.

    BENGALURU: The Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (Zee Learn) reported lowered results for Q2-2015. Total Income from operations (TIO) for Q2-2015 at Rs 22.76 crore was 39 per cent less than the Rs 37.30 crore in the immediate trailing quarter and 4.8 per cent lower than the Rs 23.91 crore in the corresponding year ago quarter. For HY-2015, Zee Learn’s TIO at Rs 60.06 crore was 4.6 per cent higher than the Rs 57.43 crore in HY-2014.

    PAT for Q2-2015 at Rs 1.14 crore (5 per cent of TIO) was 68 per cent lower than the Rs 3.56 crore (9.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 2.13 times the Rs 0.54 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. For HY-2015 PAT at Rs 4.7 crore (7.8 per cent of TIO) was 24.4 per cent higher than the Rs 3.78 crore (6.6 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Zee Learn’s Total expenditure (TE) in Q2-2015 at Rs 19.18 crore (84.3 per cent of TIO) was 38.5 per cent lower than the Rs 31.17 crore (83.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 14 per cent lower than the Rs 22.31 crore (93.3 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. HY-2015 TE at Rs 50.35 crore (83.8 per cent of TIO) was 3.8 per cent lower than the Rs 52.36 crore (91.2 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    The company’s marketing, advertisement and publicity expense (marketing expense) in Q2-2015 at Rs 1.58 crore (6.9 per cent of TIO) was 36.3 per cent less than the Rs 2.47 crore (6.6 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 16.7 per cent lower than the Rs 1.89 crore (7.9 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. Marketing expense in HY-2015 at Rs 4.05 crore (6.7 per cent of TIO) was 26.3 per cent lower than the Rs 5.49 crore (9.6 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Employee Benefit Expense (EBE) for Q2-2015 at Rs 5.84 crore (25.7 per cent of TIO) was 13.2 per cent lower than the Rs 6.73 crore (18 per cent of TIO) and 22.2 per cent lower than the Rs 7.51 crore in Q2-2014. EBE for HY-2015 at Rs 12.57 crore (20.9 per cent of TIO) was 20.6 per cent lower than the Rs 15.82 crore (27.5 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Operating cost in Q2-2015 at Rs 0.51 crore (2.2 per cent of TIO) was 24.5 per cent lower than the Rs 0.68 crore (1.8 per cent of TIO) and 37.3 per cent lower than the Rs 0.82 crore (3.4 per cent of TIO) In HY-2015, operating cost at Rs 1.19 crore (2 per cent of TIO) was 25.7 per cent lower than the Rs 1.60 crore (2.8 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Depreciation and amortisation expense (depreciation) in Q2-2015 at Rs 1.67 crore (7.4 per cent of TIO) was 15 per cent lower than the Rs 1.97 crore (5.3 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 4.6 per cent lower than the Rs 1.75 crore (7.3 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. HY-2015 depreciation at Rs 3.62 crore (6 per cent of TIO) was 10.2 per cent more than the Rs 3.29 crore (5.7 percent of TIO) in HY-2014.

     

    Other expense in Q2-2015 at Rs 5.49 crore (24.1 per cent of TIO) was 8.2 per cent lower than the Rs 5.98 crore (16 per cent of TIO) in Q1-2015 and 0.8 per cent more than the Rs 5.45 crore (22.8 per cent of TIO) in Q2-2014. Operating cost in HY-2015 at Rs 11.35 crore (18.9 per cent of TIO) was 1 per cent lower than the Rs 11.47 crore (20 per cent of TIO) in HY-2014.

    Q3-2014: Zee Learn reports nominal YTD profit

    BENGALURU: The Essel Group’s education company – Zee Learn reported a nominal net profit of Rs 0.403 crore during the nine month period (YTD) ended December 31, 2013 as compared to a loss of Rs (-13.87) crore during the corresponding nine month period of the last fiscal. Operating revenue during the nine month period ended December 31, 2013 was up 25.91 per cent to Rs 80.13 crore from Rs 63.65 crore for period ended December 31, 2012.

     

    However, Zee Learn reported a loss of Rs (-3.38) crore during Q3-2014, albeit lower when compared to a loss of Rs (-8.01) crore in Q3-2013 and a profit of Rs 0.5353 crore in the immediate trailing quarter. The company reported operating revenue of Rs 22.7 crore which was 19.27 per cent lower than the Rs 28.12 crore in Q3-2013 and 5.05 per cent lower than the Rs 23.91 crore during Q2-2014.

     

    Let us look at the other Q3-2013 figures reported by Zee Learn…

     

    During the nine month period ended December 31, 2013, the company’s expense at Rs 77.27 crore was 3.59 per cent more than the Rs 74.59 crore during the corresponding period of last year. The company spent a whopping 70.78 per cent more towards purchase of education goods and television content during the nine month period of 2014 at Rs 27.29 crore as compared to the Rs 16.27 crore in the corresponding nine month period of last year.

     

    Zee Learn reported 14.64 per cent lower total expense of Rs 24 crore for Q3-2014 as compared to the Rs 28.12 crore for Q3-2013 and 7.57 per cent more than the Rs 22.31 crore during the immediate trailing quarter. An increase in stock in trade brought down the total expense by Rs 3.5 crore during Q3-2014. The corresponding reduction brought to the total expense by increase in stock in trade during Q3-2013 and Q2-2014 was Rs 1.10 crore and Rs 0.95 crore respectively.

     

    Zee Learn spent 26.63 per cent more towards purchase of education goods and television content in Q3-2013 at Rs 9.66 crore as compared to the Rs 7.63 crore in Q3-2013 and 65.05 per cent more than the Rs 5.85 crore in Q2-2014.

     

    The company paid 37 per cent higher finance cost in Q3-2014 at Rs 2.13 crore as compared to the Rs 1.55 crore in Q3-2013 and 42.84 per cent more than the Rs 1.49 crore in Q2-2014. During the nine month period of the current year, Zee Learn paid 25.57 per cent more towards finance charges at Rs 5.17 crore as compared to the Rs 4.11 crore during the corresponding period of last fiscal.

  • KVS Seshasai to take over as Zee Learn CEO

    KVS Seshasai to take over as Zee Learn CEO

    MUMBAI: In a BSE announcement, Essel Group’s educational company Zee Learn has informed that its current CEO Navneet Anhal will be stepping down. KVS Seshasai who was previously with Reliance Brands will take over as Zee Learn CEO from today (6 January).

     

    Anhal has been with the company since 2008 as business head of Mount Litera Zee School and was elevated to the positions of COO of Zee Learn in 2012 and to CEO in 2013.

     

    Seshasai has over 15 years of experience at Trent, Tata administrative services and Wipro Infotech. At Reliance Brands he was business head of Kenneth Cole and Thomas Pink.

     

    The kids channel Zee Q is also a part of Zee Learn that caters to children in the age group of 4 to 14. Zee Learn is involved in children’s education through a number of pre schools and schools.

    Zee Learn reports improved y-o-y results for Q2:2014

    BENGALURU: The Essel group’s education company Zee Learn Limited (Zee Learn) reported higher revenue from operations at Rs 23.91 crore, higher by 27 per cent as compared to the Rs18.84 crore for Q2-2013. The company also returned a PAT of Rs 0.54 crore for Q2-2014 as compared to a loss of Rs(-2.501) crore for the corresponding quarter of last year.

    During Q1-2014, the company had forex gain of Rs 1.86 crore on remittance of the GDR issue (listed on the Luxemburg Stock Exchange) proceeds, which was included in the other income of the company for that quarter. The company had reported a 28.7 per cent higher operating of revenue of Rs 33.52 crore for the immediate trailing quarter as well as PAT of Rs 3.25 crore, which was about six times (6.06 times) more than the PAT for the current quarter.

    Let us look at the other Q2-2014 results reported by Zee Learn

    Two heads that added to the profitability were increase in stock in trade and other income.

    Zee Learn reported increase in stock in trade of Rs 0.9543 crore for Q2-2014, which was 49.2 per cent higher than the Rs 0.6396 crore for Q1-2013, but was 35.2 per cent lower than the Rs 1.47 crore for the immediate preceding quarter (Q1-2014).

    Other income for Q2-2014 at Rs 0.4294 crore was 38.6 per cent lower than the Rs 0.5953 crore for Q2-2013 and less than a fifth (5.2 times lower) of the Rs 2.22 crore for Q1-2014. As mentioned above, this included a forex gain of Rs 1.86 crore for Q1-2014.

    Total expenditure for Q2-2014 at Rs 22.31 crore was 9.1 per cent higher than the Rs 20.46 crore for Q2-2013, but 28 per cent lower than the Rs 30.95 crore for the immediate trailing quarter.

    During Q2-2014, the company spent Rs 1.89 crore towards advertising expense, which was about 5.3 per cent lower than the Rs 2.0 crore for Q2-2013 and almost half (52.4 per cent) of the Rs 3.61 crore for Q1-2014.

    Towards publicity, the company spent Rs 2.01 crore for Q2-2014, which was 32.7 per cent lower than the Rs 2.98 crore for Q2-2013 and again almost half (50.6 per cent) of the Rs 3.97 crore for Q1-2014.

    Zee Learn spent 78.6 per cent more towards purchase of education goods and TV content at Rs 5.85 crore for Q2-2014 as compared to the Rs 3.28 crore for Q2-2013, but less than half (47.7 per cent) the the Rs12.27 crore for Q1-2014.
    Depreciation and amortisation for Q2-2014 at Rs1.75 crore was 23 per cent more than the Rs1.42 crore for Q2-2013 and 14.5 per cent more than the Rs1.53 crore for Q1-2014.

    Employee benefit expense at Rs 7.51 crore for Q2-2014 was 13.8 per cent lower than the Rs 8.71 crore for the corresponding quarter of 2013 and 9.7 per cent lower than the Rs 8.31 crore for Q1-2014.

  • Umesh Pradhan joins Zee Learn as CFO

    MUMBAI: Zee Learn Limited (ZNL) has appointed Umesh Pradhan as the chief financial officer of the company with effect from 2 January.

    Pradhan replaces Arun Kabra who had quit the company on 5 December.

    As the CFO of ZNL, Pradhan will be responsible for all the companies and the trust associated with the education sector for the Essel Group.

    Zee Learn is also looking after content and channel management of the recently launched edutainment channel ZeeQ. The channel is housed under Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd.

    ZeeQ now available on Dish TV and Videocon d2h

    MUMBAI: ZeeQ, the newly launched edutainment channel from Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, has said it is now available on Dish TV and Videocon d2h direct-to-home platforms.

    Dish TV customers can watch ZeeQ on channel no. 510, while Videocon d2h has put it on channel no. 525 as a paid-for channel.
    The ZeeQ programming slate features programmes like ‘Teenovation’, a show in association with National Innovation Foundation about Children innovators who display brilliance and create utility items for problems they see around them, ‘Wordmatch’, a national Hindi game show, and ‘BrainCafé’, a hang out to learn about science theories, concepts and its applications.

    ZeeQ business head Subhdarshi Tripathy said, “ZeeQ has researched programming content which is produced on the basis of experience of Indian kids. We are committed to provide the unique viewing experience of learning through ZeeQ’s edutainment platform to Indian kids through wider network of Dish TV and Videocon d2h.”

    ZeeQ is the 32nd channel from Zeel, which manages ZeeQ’s broadcast operations, while Zee Learn will look after the content and channel management. Zeel will invest Rs 1 billion in ZeeQ over a period of three years and is eyening a break-even in five years.

    The bi-lingual channel will have 70 per cent content in Hindi and 30 per cent in English. ZeeQ will be a pay channel and have a mix of home produced and acquired content.
