    Zee World tops the GEC pay platform in Zambia

    MUMBAI: Zee World, ZEEL’s English general entertainment channel is gaining steam in Africa, revealed the company.

    At the Content Upfront in Lusaka on May 29, Zee World announced that it has captured the number one GEC position on Pay TV platform in Zambia.

    “The growing success of Zee channels paves the way for further expansion in the continent,” said a buoyant Zee Africa, CEO, Harish Goyal

    The Content Upfront was held at the Southern Sun Ridgeway Hotel. In the next quarter, Zee World is likely to host more editions of the Content Upfront  in Botswana, Namibia, Ghana, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

    Zee World, the first offering from ZEEL for mainstream viewers in Africa, was launched in 2015.

    The other channels  in the Zee Africa bouquet include Zee Bollymovies, Zee Bollynova, Zee TV and Zee Cinema.

    MUMBAI: The people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do. A movie that dared to break stereotypes and talk about a tabooed topic, Pad Man was instrumental in creating a platform to discuss female hygiene in the country. Helmed by the celebrated director R Balki, Pad Man is a biographical drama based on the inspiring life of the social entrepreneur Arunachalam Muruganantham, and features Akshay Kumar, Radhika Apte and Sonam Kapoor in the lead. Zee Cinema, Home of Blockbusters will showcase the World TV Premiere of this blockbuster on Saturday, 26th May at 8 PM.

    Like Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Pad Man, is about the great lengths a loving husband will go to for the happiness and the health of his wife. The movie tells the story of a one man’s crusade to provide affordable sanitary protection for all women and is certainly a complete family entertainer. Bollywood celebrities praised the makers as well as the actors for curating such a great film which focuses on a social cause like removing the stigma around periods. From Karan Johar, Ayushmann Khurrana, Yami Gautam, Swara Bhasker to Homi Adajania, celebrities called the film uplifting, inspiring and phenomenal.

    Pad Man follows the life of Laxmikant Chauhan (Akshay Kumar) and Gayatri (Radhika Apte), a happy go lucky couple. Laxmikant is deeply in love with his wife and will do anything for her comfort and happiness. Laxmikant is outraged that Gayatri uses a dirty cloth and is confined to a corner of the house for the duration of her menstrual cycle. His growing obsession with sanitation and experiments to create an affordable alternative horrify Gayatri and his extended family. Laxmikant’s war might be waged in the name of his tradition-bound and submissive wife, but it is another woman who nudges him towards success. Business school graduate Pari (Sonam Kapoor) enters Laxmikant’s life and helps him with sales and marketing to revolutionise female sanitation not only in India but globally.

  • Zee promotes freeing of its channels on UK’s Sky TV

    MUMBAI: Three years after it introduced the Sky Asia pack in the UK, the British satellite operator has decided to drop it and put the Asian channels into its basic bouquet.  It was in March 2014, that  Sky had introduced the pack – consisting of Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zee Punjabi, Sony Entertainment Television, Sony MAX and B4U Movies – at a price of 15 pounds. But Britasians were slow to subscribe to the package. That was even after it was made available at five pounds to viewers, according to online news reports. The reason: content on the paid pack was available on free TV. 

    So when the three year agreement with Sky and the Asian channels came up for renewal earlier this year, it decided to change the status quo and put the channels out for free in  its three packs    – original, variety and box sets. The. original pack is priced at 22 pounds and offers 270 channels; the variety sells at 25 pounds a month for 300 plus channels and the box set pack at  31 pounds a month  for 350 plus channels. The Asian  channels will be giving company to others such as Star Plus, Star Gold, Life OK, Star Utsav, and MTV Beats, which are also available at no cost.

    To promote this change, Zee Entertainment Enterprises, one of the first movers into the UK with its Hindi channels, launched a two week phased  campaign starting with a teaser   – casting a shadow of suspense over the UK with  “Can you keep a ZEECRET” message. The advertising was pushed nationwide accross media,  covering key south Asian pockets. It also undertook an innovative viral announcement by Youtube comedian sensation, Pammi Aunty – who not only lets you in on the secret that Zee TV UK, Zee Cinema, Zee Punjabi are free but also tells you what to do with the saving of the £15 monthly Sky Asia Pack fee!

    Now the promotion has moved into the nexrt phase with the message: “All Zee, No Fee,” Zee Entertainment Enterprises marketing head – UK and Europe Simran Sablok informed indiantelevision.com. The idea: draw eyeballs to the Zee channel group including Zee TV, Zee Cinema, Zing, Zee Punjabi and &TV.  

    Even as the channels have gone free on Sky, Zee’s channels  continue to be available on Virgin  as part of the paid Asian Mela pack.

    Observers are expecting the slugfest between the Indian channels in the UK to intensify for the already shrinking advertising pound following this move.

  • Zee accelerates growth plan for Africa, partners TNTSAT

    MUMBAI: Aiming to further strengthen its presence in Africa, leading Indian content company, Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) today announced its entry into the French-speaking country of Mali with the launch of its leading channels, Zee Magic and Zee Cinema on DTT network – TNTSAT Africa in Mali. Additionally, from today, ZEE Africa is partnering with the continent’s largest DTH platform, DStv for the launch of Zee Bollymovies (channel 114), a specially customized, English-dubbed, Bollywood movie channel for the African market.

    ZEEL CEO – international broadcast business Amit Goenka said: “ZEE will be making further inroads into the vast continent of Africa with our entry into the French-speaking country of Mali. Sharing our existing channels – Zee Magic and Zee Cinema with new audiences is a huge achievement for us and we thank TNTSAT for allowing us to bring the best of Bollywood to all their viewers in Mali.”

    Zee TV Africa CEO Harish Goyal stated: “In another major deal, within just four weeks of its launch, our 24-hour dedicated English-dubbed Bollywood movie channel, Zee Bollymovies will now be available on DStv, the largest DTH platform in Sub-Saharan Africa. ZEE has already witnessed tremendous success over the past two years on DStv with Zee World, its English-dubbed General Entertainment channel and with the addition of Zee Bollymovies on this platform, we hope to further raise the level of entertainment for our dedicated viewers.”

    Zee Magic, launched in October 2015, is a General Entertainment channel dubbed in French which brings the best of Bollywood series and food shows to Francophone Africa, while Zee Cinema is a 24-hour Hindi Bollywood Movie channel catering to South Asians on the continent. In Mali, Zee Magic and Zee Cinema will be available on TNTSAT Africa in the ‘Divas offer’, a high standard package that is tailor-made for viewers.

    Zee Bollymovies, a 24-hour specially customized movie channel dubbed in English, launched in January 2017 in Africa. DStv will first premiere Zee Bollymovies in South Africa and then take it to the rest of the continent to market Bollywood entertainment to Africa. With these exciting new additions from ZEE, Africa now has a first-row seat to watch the best of content – Bollywood movies, television series and food shows – that India has to offer!

  • Five TV shows that impressed in week 7 of BARC

    MUMBAI: Indian TV audience is like the spectators who took part in deciding the fate of a gladiator who lost a duel in the infamous Roman games encouraged by many a Ceaser. Thumbs down meant death; thumbs up meant the vanquished could live on – to entertain them another day.  

    BARC’s weekly viewership monitoring of Indian TV viewing habits gives us the insight into what judgments the audience delivered for the Indian TV shows.

    Let’s  take a peek at the shows  that India’s viewers lapped up, giving them handsome growth numbers (in excess of 1.5  times)  in week 7 of BARC’s report.  The data has been provided by the ratings agency.

    The top-most ranker was Star Plus’ Dil Bole Oberoi, the launch episode of which on Monday at 10:30 am garnered 6228 impressions (in 000s)  as against the average for the previous four weeks of 1,228 impressions for P.O.W – Bandi Yuddh Ke. The new TV soap runs six days a week, and is a sequel of the earlier successful TV show Ishqbaaz.

    The viewership for the 10:30 slot rose 5.1 times, clearly indicating that the Indian audience is continuing its romance with soaps and soppy family fare, rather than high class, well-written limited series. P.O.W – Bandi Yuddh Ke  (an adaptation of Israeli format Hatufim, Khatufim did brilliantly well in Israel and even in its US adaptation as Homeland) had very high production values and appealed to the watchers of serious television. But, its ratings were nothing to write home about.

    The WWE Elimination Chamber leapt 2.4 times, with 3,742 impressions (in 000s) in week 7 on Monday between 6 pm and 9:24 pm on Ten 1 SD+HD. The average for the previous four weeks was 1,556 impressions. The Smackdown brand-exclusive event “Elimination Chamber” had some major wrestling stars battling it out for the winners podium. The Kickoff match was between Mojo Rawley and Curt Hawkins which saw the former getting through. The second bout was between Apollo Crews & Kalisto vs. Dolph Ziggler (2-on-1 Handicap Match) which, as per expectation, was won by the former team. The Elimination Chamber matches featured: Baron Corbin, Dean Ambrose, John Cena (c), AJ Styles, Bray Wyatt, & The Miz (for the WWE Championship).

    The Telugu film Businessman 2 which premiered on Zee Cinema on Friday 17 February between 19:59 and 23:02 dubbed in Hinid saw its viewership swell by 2.2 times with 4,496 impressions (as against 2,072 impressions for the previous four week average.) The action drama starring Ram Pothineni, Sonal Chouhan and Rakul Preet Singh. Business tycoon Ram aka Karthik based in Portugal heads to India to solve a case registered by Rakul (Divya). While in India, he tries to get her to withdraw the case, falls in love with her, despite being engaged to Sonal. and also reunites his family business. The Gopichand Malineni directed film obviously lured the audience.

    The fourth top chart breaker during week 7 was the 19th Vivo Asianet Film Awards which aired on Asianet on Saturday and Sunday from 7 pm to 10:45 and from 18:59 to 10:42 respectively. The increase was 1.4 times to 5,945 impressions (4,139 impressions previous four weeks average) and twice to 5033 impressions (2,461 impressions).

    The fifth noteworthy performer was Life OK’s launch episode of “Har Mard Ka Dard” between 8 and 8:30 pm on Tuesday which saw the slot’s viewership shoot up by 1.7 times  to 2,080 impressions (as against 1,260 impressions in the previous four weeks).

  • Akash Chawla bids adieu to ZEEL after 12 years

    MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises company Zee Studio’s executive vice-president – films, and business head Akash Chawla has resigned after a long stint of 12 years.

    A source close to the network confirmed the news to Indiantelevision.com. In May last year, ZEEL elevated Chawla along with Deepak Rajadhyaksha for key roles in Zee TV to drive the organisational goals.

    In addition to his portfolio as Essel Vision Productions Limited and Zee Studio’s business head, he was given the additional charge as the business head of Zee TV.

    In his earlier broadcasting stint, Chawla successfully spearheaded the marketing function for the flagship and national channels like Zee TV, Zee Cinema and Zee Classic. He also played a pivotal role in the launch of channels such as &pictures, Zee Anmol and Zindagi.

    Chawla joined ZEEL in 2005 as Zee TV brand head where he was in charge of brand strategy and building the brand to be No. 1 in market share and strong in brand equity. Prior to Zee, he worked with TAM as the marketing manager. As a part of the TAM S-Group, he had the responsibility to maximise non-TRP revenue from Mumbai and Delhi.
