    English movies and news genres most benefitted: Chrome DM wk 38

    MUMBAI: With a growth of 1.67 per cent, the English movies genre marked the highest opportunity to see (OTS) among all categories in week 38 of Chrome Data Analytics & Media. In this category, Movies Now gained the highest OTS in six metros with 54.0 per cent, and Star Movies was the second most benefitted in terms of OTS with 48.3 per cent.

    The English news genre ranked second in the gainers’ category with a growth of 0.62 per cent opportunity to see (OTS) as compared to last week (37) of Chrome Data. Loksabha TV gained the highest OTS in six metros with 94.3 per cent whereas Rajyasabha TV gained the second slot on the list with 90.5 per cent OTS.

    The third position in the gainers’ list of OTS was grabbed by the ‘religious’ genre with the growth of 0.61 per cent on an HSM (Hindi-speaking market) excluding 1L market basis. In this category, OTS of Sanskar was leading the genre with 98.9 per cent, whereas Aastha pocketed the second position with 97.9 per cent OTS.

    The music genre pocketed the fourth position in the list with 0.56 per cent growth and Sony Mix with 91.5 per cent whereas 9XM grabbed the number two position with 88.5 per cent OTS on an HSM (Hindi-speaking market) excluding 1L market basis.

    The fifth position in the gainers’ list was taken by the sports genre with a growth of 0.36 per cent. In this category, DD Sports is topping the OTS chart with 95.0 per cent whereas Star Sports 2 was the second topper with 87.6 per cent on an all-India basis in Chrome DM’s week 38.

    Among the losers, kids was the most affected genre with a drop of 0.86 per cent OTS on an all-India basis with Nickelodeon topping the chart with 88.5 followed by Cartoon Network with 84.2 per cent OTS.

    Hindi movies category recorded a fall of 0.49 per cent OTS on an HSM (Hindi-speaking market) excluding 1L market basis. In this category, Star Gold grabbed the highest OTS with 94.0 per cent followed by Max 93.9 per cent.

    Business news in six metros reserved the third position in the losers’ list with a drop of 0.39 per cent. Zee Business and CNBC Awaaz gained top two positions with 85.2 per cent and 83.4 per cent, respectively.

    Infotainment all-India bagged the fourth position in the losers’ list with a drop of 0.36 per cent. In this category, NGC and History TV 18 reserved the top two positions with 92.1 per cent and 90.3 per cent, respectively.

    The Hindi news genre stood at the fifth position with a fall of 0.16 per cent OTS with India TV leading the chart with 99.6 per cent, followed by DD News with 98.7 per cent OTS on an HSM (Hindi-speaking market) excluding 1L market basis.

  • Sudhir Chaudhary elevated as editor-in-chief of Zee News, Zee Business, WION & DNA

    MUMBAI: Is it merit, Hobson’s choice, or simply loyalty? Operating on the growth path and to strengthen its leadership team, Zee Business, an arm of Zee Media Corporation, has elevated Sudhir Chaudhary to the editor-in-chief position for Zee News, Zee Business, WION and DNA.

    He will report to Zee Media group COO Rajiv Singh. Respective editorial teams will report to Chaudhary who seems to be gaining prominence faster than normal course.

    After the exit of Amish Devgan, the channel was looked after by Samir Ahluwalia, who was appointed as the editor for Zee Business in May 2016 and deputy editor Mihir Bhatt.

    Accused in Rs 100-crore extortion case against industrialist Naveen Jindal, Ahluwalia called it a day in Zee Media in September 2016. Several rumours had surfaced about Bhatt being elevated to the role of the channel head but he now seems to be losing favour with the senior management. The search for Zee Business’ head continued since, until this development.

    Asheet Kunal has been given the interim charge of India 24×7 editor surpassing Vasindra Mishra, who earlier served as the editor of Zee Media’s national Hindi news channel. Kunal will continue reporting to Jagdeesh Chandra. The group has re-designated Mishra as the political editor for regional channels and will report to Chandra.

    Chandra was recently appointed as the executive director of Zee Media’ regional news channels. He also takes care of Essel Group’s newspaper DNA as the CEO.

    MUMBAI: Zee Business, an arm of Zee Media Corporation, has seen several transitions in its management this year. The channel was initially headed by Amish Devgan, who decided to move away after serving for 14 years. It was then led by Zee Media Corporation’s then CEO for content Samir Ahluwalia,who was re-designated as the editor of the channel in June 2016.

    After Devgan’s exit, the channel was looked after by Ahluwalia and deputy editor Mihir Bhatt. Accused in the case of Rs 100-crore extortion from industrialist Naveen Jindal, Ahluwalia called it a day in Zee Media in September. Then, the search for Zee Business head continued, until this development.

    Sources told indiantelevision.com that Zee reportedly tried to reach out to few media experts namely, Sanjay Pugalia, Mehraj Dube, Amish Devgan and Pranjal Sharma to take up the role.

    While Pugalia is with Raghav Bahl’s The Quint as the president and editorial director of both The Quint and Bloomberg Quint, Dube is Essel Group Corp Resources’ deputy vice president. Devgan has taken up the role of the executive editor at IBN7 whereas Sharma is an economic analyst and writer contributing to BusinessWorld magazine as its consulting editor and anchors ‘The Appointment’ show on Zee network.

    It remains to be seen who will head the channel…

    R.K.Arora bids adieu to Zee Media

    MUMBAI: Executive director and CEO of Zee Media R.K. Arora has stepped down from his role. A source close to the development has confirmed this development to indiantelevision.

    Arora was appointed as an additional director and CEO of the company for a period of three years with effect from May 24, 2016 soon after the chairman of the Essel Group of companies Subhash Chandra resigned from the post of director and non-executive chairman of Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL).

    Arora was responsible for the various news channels under ZMCL that included WION, Zee News, Zee Business, India 24×7, Zee Punjab Haryana Himachal, Zee Madhya Pradesh Chhattisgarh, Zee 24 Taas, 24 Ghanta, Zee Kalinga News, Zee Purvaiya, and Zee Rajasthan News.

    Before joining ZMCL, Arora was the CEO of News Nation. He earlier was with ITV Network where he managed the overall operations of its seven channels.

    Updates on Arora’s successor is still awaited.

    Meanwhile, the whole Essel/Zee group is undergoing a restructuring. The group recently appointed a new chief executive for Zee Entertainment’s domestic broadcast business in Punit Misra, while Amit Goenka continues to be the CEO-International for ZEEL. Zee’s parent Essel has formed a new entity, Essel Business Excellence, which will take care of many of the common responsibilities of the group companies.Another business unit, Zee Unimedia, will not only look after ad sales of Zee’s digital platforms but also its TV channels, while scouting around for outside work too in the long run, if media reports are to be believed.

    BARC week 24: Hindi, English and Business News see change in pecking order

    MUMBAI: Week 24 of the BARC ratings has seen the English and Business News genres showing a shrinkage in numbers. Amongst the drop outs from the toppers in the English language news space is CNN News18, even as News 9 climbed up to the fourth position. On the other hand, ratings for the Hindi News space rose substantially, with the exception of Aaj Tak and News Nation.  In the Hindi Business News genre, CNBC TV18 saw an increase in viewership while Zee Business’s ratings went down.

    English News

    Times Now dominated the genre even though its ratings declined to  to 218 Impressions (000s) this week from 364 Impressions (000s) in week 23. NDTV 24×7 took the second berth with 132 Impressions (000s) followed by India Today Television grabbing the third position with 110 Impressions (000s). News 9 entered and News X were at the No 4 and 5 positions with 97 Impressions (000s) each.

    English Business News

    CNBC TV 18 observed a downfall in ratings even as it retained its top position with 80 Impressions (000s) as compared to 143 Impressions (000s) in week 23 followed by ET Now with 78 Impressions (000s). NDTV Profit and NDTV Prime continued at the third position with 43 Impressions (000s) while Bloomberg TV  was at the last spot with 8 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi News

    Aaj Tak  clung on to its numero uno position  even though its ratings went south at 70126 Impressions (000s) as compared to 70229 Impressions (000s)  in week 23. India TV continued  at No 2  with 66035 Impressions (000s). ABP News with 46554 Impressions (000s) took the third spot. India News with 42324 Impressions (000s) was at the fourth rung of the news ladder while News Nation took the fifth berth with 38299 Impressions (000s).

    Hindi Business News

    CNBC Awaaz maintained its first position with its ratings rising to 511 Impressions (000s) from 506 Impressions (000s). The second spot was taken by Zee Business with 304 Impressions (000s) as compared to 410 Impressions (000s) in week 23.

    MUMBAI: The game of musical chairs in the Indian news TV channel business continues unabated. Over the last couple of months there have been many a high profile resignation and reappointment amongst those delivering news to Indian viewers. The latest to also make a move is  Amish Devgan  who has hopped on board Network18 as executive editor.  

    Devgan will closely work with Network18 news CEO and group editor in chief Rahul Joshi and consulting editor Prabal Pratap Singh. He will use his expertise to devise various strategies and plans for all the Hindi news channels under the group. Network 18 has two Hindi news channels namely IBN7 and CNBC Awaaz.

    With 16 years of journalistic experience, Devgan recently moved out of Zee Media after 14 years. In his last role, he was a prime time anchor and chief editor with Zee Business and hosted the highest TRP gaining show Big Story Big Debate at 8 pm daily. The show included several debates and discussions on various current day-to-day issues across politics, economy, and financial markets with high profile political, corporate guests and experts on camera.

    Devgan started his career with Hindustan Times and joined Zee News in 2002. He later moved to Zee Business in 2005.  He has won several accolades in the past and has successfully created a niche for himself amongst business anchors.
