New hope for NTV and HMTV with new editors

MUMBAI: The editorial team of an old Telugu News channel, NTV, has just got a new boss. The channel has roped in K Siva Prasad as its new editor. Prasad took charge from 3 July and was earlier the editor of Zee 24 Gantalu, the now defunct Telugu News channel from the Zee cluster.

On the other hand, Rajasekhar who was the editor of NTV before Prasad took charge has moved on to HMTV where he will be the MD and chief editor. Rajasekhar replaces erstwhile HMTV MD, CEO and editor in chief K Ramachandra Murthy.

Murthy’s next stint is yet unknown. He has worked with Andhra Jyoti, Vartha and Udayam newspapers.

HMTV was launched in 2009 with the slogan ‘Faster…Brighter’ while NTV was launched in 2007.

Zee Media launches Zee Kalinga in Odisha

MUMBAI:  Zee News Media Corp (ZMCL) continues to expand its presence in the regional news space. As part of its new format of Terrestrial Entertainment Network (TEN), the television news group has launched Odia language Zee Kalinga to tap viewers in the state of Orissa.

Zee Kalinga replaces Telugu language Zee 24 Gantalu which discontinued its operations in November 2013 as Zee News found the Andhra Pradesh market to be a highly competitive market. In January this year, ZMCL decided to move into Odisha with Zee Kalinga. The channel has been in preparation since six months and all it had to do was to apply to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) for converting its news licence from one channel to another. The approval from the MIB came through in January this year.

ZMCL has hired around 100 employees for the Odia channel, with Amitava Bhattacharya as EVP, Satya Prakash Nayak as Resident Editor, Arjya Patnaik as Programming Head and Aryabhatta Dash as Marketing Manager. In the TEN format, the programming is equally divided between news and non-news shows.

News will have several bulletins, chat shows and factual entertainment capsules, while non-news will have four fiction shows and two reality shows. “The key differentiator in the content strategy of the channel is to cut across audiences and serve them varied types of content on a platter. Zee Kalinga, through its unforgettable and powerful content, will bring to life a unique philosophy of ‘all in one’ entertainment,” says Bhattacharya.

News is being created in-house while non-news shows have been outsourced to production houses. Half-an-hour bulletins will be spread across the day, while one hour news discussion will be telecast during prime time for five days a week. Special bulletins are also planned on sports, business and other special stories.

Some of the non-news shows are Asha Ra Akash produced by Urmi Communications, Katha Ta Etiki by Shri Ganesh Telefilms, Abhinetri by Vidisha Kraft, Mo Jejemaa by Herald, Maa Raan Micha Kahuni by Asian Shopping Club and Mr. and Miss Kalinga by Prelude Novel Ventures. Three dubbed non-news shows are also to be aired – Bikram Betaal, Ramayana and Buddha.

Zee Kalinga will have its main office at Bhubaneshwar and bureaus in Sambalpore, Behrampore and Balasore. It will cater to cable and satellite homes with people above four years of age falling under socio-economic classification of A, B and C.

A marketing campaign, created by Sanket Communications, has been undertaken to proclaim the tagline ‘Mu Odia, Mo Odisha’. Print ads will begin tomorow in newspapers Samay, Samvad and Samaj while outdoor advertising is planned in Bhubaneshwar and other TAM towns. Sources say the marketing spend is to the tune of Rs 1 crore. BTL activities began last week while radio and outdoor began today. About 37 spots have been bought for outdoor hoardings.

Advertisers are still being sought, some of them being from the retail, education, real estate and government sectors. The channel plans to have just 20 per cent advertisers from Bhubhaneshwar while the rest will be spread from across the country. It is looking to tap into a robust Rs 100 crore advertising market (news and regional entertainment put together).

The channel will be available free-to-air till March after which it will be coverted into a pay TV channel. “We are covered on Ortel, Variety, Manthan and most other local LCOs. On DTH, we are live on Dish TV and Airtel Digital. This will give us 90 per cent plus reach in overall Orissa and 95 per cent in digital,” says Bhattacharya.

As far as the name of the channel is concerned he adds, “Kalinga is its old name so we just felt like keeping it.”

  • Zee 24 Gantalu faces acid test

Zee 24 Gantalu faces acid test

MUMBAI: Change is in the air at Zee Media Corp Ltd’s (ZMCL) Telugu news channel Zee 24 Gantalu. Reason: the management has decided to restructure the straggler in the ZMCL portfolio, which has been buffeted by competition in the hyper-news state of Andhra Pradesh.

ZMCL had set up Zee 24 Gantalu in a 50:50 association with a local politician Satyanarayanan Botsa, whose brother Sateesh Botsa ran the channel.

“It is not viable for us to run it in its current state. We have invested heavily in Zee 24 Gantalu and have tried many different strategies to make it work. But it has been losing a lot of money,” says ZMCL CEO Alok Agrawal. “We are currently reevaluating the options before us.”

Among the options before it is shutting down the channel. But Agrawal says no decision has been taken in this direction. “We will know clearly in a couple of weeks what we will do,” he points out.

What is clear is that the association between Botsa and ZMCL will not continue with Zee 24 Gantalu, if one goes by what Sateesh Botsa has told indiantelevision.com. Quoting him: “It was a management call to stop the channel due to several reasons. Now it is completely a ZMCL property. As a news channel it has stopped but they (Zee) may want to continue it as another channel.”

Alok Agrawal admits that the channel has been incurring losses and that they are looking at restructuring

A surf through the Telugu news channels space shows that Zee 24 Gantalu is airing only entertainment video footage and fillers without any ticker as of now. Additionally, rival channels told indiantelevision.com that Zee 24 Gantalu staff has started approaching them for jobs. An employee stated that the management has hammered out a severance package under the direction of ZMCL CFO Dinesh Garg which includes three months pay. Agrawal however stated that this is not true and that it could be possible that employees have chosen to look for jobs, because they know that a major restructuring is planned. Zee 24 Gantalu reportedly has 300 employees working with it.

The channel has been in the news recently because of the cases which have been filed against it for the stories it has aired – the latest one involving the Andhra Pradesh Police DGP V Dinesh Reddy. According to sources, this was one of the reasons that prompted Botsa to opt out.

Who chose to opt out is not clear, but clearly a new chapter is about to be written in the Zee 24 Gantalu saga.

Zee 24 Gantalu pulled to the court

MUMBAI: After ATN Canada filed a case against Zee TV Canada for going out of its limitation of only catering to women audiences, a new case has been filed against Zee’s Telugu arm, Zee 24 Gantalu.

The case was filed by the Kushaiguda police after directions were given by a local court. This was regarding the telecast of a video that contained a statement by TRS chief K Chandrashekhar Rao on the repatriation of Seemandhara region’s employees.

The channel has been accused of trying to create disharmony and hatred among the people of Seemandhara by not interpreting Rao’s words correctly. An advocate P Sanjay of Moula Ali has approached the court regarding it.

Rao had said that once Telengana is formed, the employees of Seemandhara need to go back to their original place. However, the channel telecast something different is what Sanjay claims.

When indiantelevision.com contacted Zee 24 Gantalu to confirm the news, the news editor of the channel K Siva Prasad said that the police has filed an FIR on the court’s orders. “The case will be heard on 12 August. The news piece that Sanjay has objected to was aired last week.”

On the other hand, both Advertising and Subscription Revenues have shown an increase over the last year. • Zee News sees improvement in profits in FY 2013 financials

MUMBAI: By the time Zee News Ltd announces its financials this time next year, it could well be sporting a new name Zee Media Corp. It could well also have merged its news broadcasting business with Essel group publication DNA as proposed by its board (see Zee News-DNA: merger on the cards?). Additionally, it could well also have news and infotainment channels in Rajasthan and Bihar/Jharkhand on air (it plans to launch them in the first half this year) adding to the roster it already runs in Zee News, Zee Business, Zee 24 Taas, Zee Punjabi, Zee News UP, Zee Tamil, Zee 24 Gantalu, and 24 Ghanta.

That could well be good news for any Zee News watcher. But what is better news is the fact that the company has achieved a turnaround of sorts by reporting a profit in Q4-2013 of Rs 6.87 crore. That‘s despite a drop in ad and overall revenues in the quarter. Subscription revenues have, however, been buoyant in the period.

Let us look at the Q4-2013 results as against corresponding Q4-2012

Revenues for Q4-2013 stand at Rs 79.06 crore, a dip of 8.43 per cent from last Q4- 2012‘s Rs 86.34 crore. Of this, subscription revenues have increased to Rs 22.2 crore as against last quarter‘s reported Rs 20.8 crore. Ad revenues have declined to Rs 52.2 crore from Rs 56.3 crore.

Operating costs have significantly dropped to Rs 14.15 crore as against last corresponding quarter‘s Rs 21.39 crore. However the overall expenses have surged to Rs 78.05 crore, a rise of over 9.6 per cent from Rs 71.02 crore of the last corresponding quarter especially with its employee benefit expenses rising to Rs 23.2 crore (a rise of 22 per cent annually).

EBITDA for the quarter was disappointing at Rs 4.68 crore as against Rs 18.4 crore reported in the last corresponding period, a dive of over 74 per cent.

PAT for the quarter (Q4-2013) at Rs 6.87 crore is a massive surge of 300 per cent from a reported loss of Rs 3.95 crore in the last corresponding quarter- Q4-2012..

Let us look at the consolidated annual FY-2013 financials vs FY-2012

While total revenues have slipped to Rs 303.81 crore in FY-2013 as against FY-2012‘s Rs 307.22 crore, subscription revenues for the full year have surged by over 13.5 per cent to Rs 84.27 crore as opposed to last year‘s Rs 74.27 crore. Subscription revenues contributed to 27.7 per cent of the total revenues indicating stronger viewer demand for the channels, while ad revenues standing at Rs 202 crore contributed a majority to the total revenue stream.
Expenses have risen 5 per cent to Rs 278.23 crore from last year‘s Rs 265 crore, with its employee benefit expenses at Rs 87.7 crore increasing by over 17.4 per cent. EBITDA for the full year is reported at Rs 37.54 crore a drop of over 29.6 per cent from last year‘s 53.35 crore.

Net profit for FY-2013 has ballooned 109 per cent to Rs 24.17 crore as against FY-2012‘s Rs 11.55 crore. The major reason for this surge is the pouring in of funds through sources apart from its core operations including the Rs 4.8 crore dividends it received from its subsidiary Zee Akash News Pvt. Ltd. Its interest cost has narrowed to Rs 8.79 crore as against last year‘s reported Rs 10.66 crore. Also the taxation costs have reduced by 3 per cent over the year.

Its online property Zeenews.com has been doing well and gaining traction. Even its microsite for the India Vs Australia series generated close to 2.9 million page views while its Union budget site knocked up 1.3 million page views.

Says Zee News managing director Punit Goenka,” Our subscription revenues have shown a double digit increase and have partially compensated for the revenue constraints from a tepid advertising response in the backdrop of a muted period of growth. Out constant endeavour to bring innovative, quality and unbiased content to the viewer will remain the cornerstone of our programming. We aspire to be the one-stop destination for news in the country by building seamless synergy among the group‘s TV, print and digital platforms. Our company is redefining itself in tune with the changing times, laying emphasis on the digital medium and addressing broader viewer tastes.”

Adds Zee News CEO Alok Agrawal,” The Zee bouquet of news channels reached the highest number of people across the country touching over a 100 million viewers the last quarter of the fiscal. The network also had the highest relative share in the same period. It is a testimony to the fact that our viewer oriented and innovative programming has shown results. Our differentiated offering to business news viewers has resulted in Zee Business being a leader in five out of 13 weeks of the quarter. Also we are seeing a significant swing of viewers from English business news to Hindi business news. In the last quarter we expanded our footprint by establishing our presence in burgeoning central Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh with the launch of news and infotainment channel-Zee Madhya Pradesh/Chhattisgarh.”

  • Zee News Ltd Q2 net up 18% to Rs 70 mn

Zee News Ltd Q2 net up 18% to Rs 70 mn

MUMBAI: Zee News Limited’s (ZNL) consolidated net profit rose 18.2 per cent to Rs 70.2 million in the second quarter ended 30 September from a year earlier on the back of a 39.1 per cent rise in subscription revenues which more than offset a 9.7 per cent fall in its advertising revenue.

ZNL, which had decided to reduce its advertisement air time by 30 per cent beginning in the first quarter, has seen its advertising revenue come down to Rs 439.2 million in the second quarter from Rs 486.5 million a year earlier.

The news network’s subscription revenue increased to Rs 222.6 million from Rs 160.1 million a year earlier. In the first quarter, ZNL’s subscription income was Rs 176 million.

ZNL’s consolidated revenues for the quarter fell 11.6 per cent to Rs 700.3 million from Rs 792.6 million in the year before period. The company’s operating expenditure fell 12.4 per cent during the quarter to Rs 621.7 million from Rs 709.4 million a year earlier.

Consolidated Ebitda stood at Rs 78.6 million in the second quarter compared with Rs 83.2 million a year earlier.

The company said it has established a wholly owned subsidiary in the name of 24 Ghantalu News Ltd for housing its Telugu News channel ‘Zee 24 Gantalu’ and has invested initial capital of Rs 0.5 million in the subsidiary.

Earlier the company had decided to shutter Zee 24 Gantalu citing economic unviability as the reason.

ZNL MD Punit Goenka said, “The media industry continued to face slowdown issues in the second quarter especially in the months of July and August. ZNL always has had subscription revenue stream supplementing the ad revenues which helps the company counter any slowdown in the advertising industry. However, we expect that the advertising would be quite buoyant in the coming quarters.”

  • Zee News Ltd to shutter Telugu news channel

Zee News Ltd to shutter Telugu news channel

MUMBAI: Zee News Ltd (ZNL) is retreating the Telugu news market. Zee 24 Gantalu has decided to close down next month as it struggled to become economically viable in a crowded marketplace where there are too many politically-oriented channels.

“24 Gantalu will close down on 20 September. There are 14 Telugu news channels operating in that market and two more are launching. They are politically driven and it does not make sense to continue in that market,” a source familiar with the development said.

The TV Telugu news ad market is pegged at Rs 1.2 billion. The market leader TV9 takes away a major chunk of this amount, according to an industry source. Price wars are rampant, making channels sell to advertisers at miserable rates.

“The entire Telugu TV news business is becoming unviable because of too many players and abnormally low ad rates. Other interests rather than business seems to be the primary motive,” says a senior news channel executive.

ZNL’s decision also comes ahead of its plans to launch an English-language general news channel that will consume heavy capital. The closure of 24 Ghantalu will help cut down ZNL’s losses from new businesses and ease pressure on the company’s operating profit if it goes ahead with the launch of the English channel.

Indiantelevision.com had reported that ZNL is planning to launch an English news channel towards the exit quarter of the fiscal as digitisation settles in the four metros.

The operating loss of 24 Ghantalu in FY’12 stood at approximately Rs 140 million, the source said.

ZNL had reported losses of Rs 227.4 million on a revenue of Rs 131.9 million for the fiscal from its new businesses that include Zee News Uttar Pradesh/Uttarakhand and 24 Gantalu.

“If the English channel launch is on, the shutting down of a loss-making channel will be seen as a positive move. It will soften ZNL’s pressure on Ebitda from the launch of an English news channel that will consume anywhere between Rs 2.5-3 billion over the first three years,” a media analyst said on condition of anonymity.

ZNL had reported Ebitda of Rs 533.5 million in FY’12 on a consolidated operating revenue of Rs 3.07 billion. The company runs a cluster of channels including Zee News, Zee Business, Zee 24 Taas, Zee Punjabi and 24 Ghanta.
