    Sony Max gets ‘filmy’ yet again!

    MUMBAI: It’s no surprise that Indians have always been crazy or ‘deewana’ about two things – Bollywood and cricket. It is the only country, where in the most unexpected of moments one can find people using a dialogue from a movie or breaking into a song. And it’s this ‘Bollywood Fever’ which makes it important for Hindi movie channel Sony Max to bring out the ‘deewanapan’ (craziness) in a new, surprising manner every time.

     

    It was in 2012, when the channel felt the need to get viewers close to the world of movies and live the life filmy style, and thus launching a campaign titled, ‘Shuruaat Yahin Se’ which celebrated 100 years of cinema. It talked about how watching a good film is a way to handle extreme emotions.

     

    But the phrase failed to click with the audiences, and so in 2013, the channel’s tagline ‘Deewana Bana De’ had to come back in a new avatar. Max launched three television commercials as part of its brand campaign – ‘Jahan Dekho, Vahaan Deewana’ which added a new dimension to its existing positioning, ‘Deewana Bana De’.

     

    This year, to further strengthen its emotional connect with the consumers, the channel has launched three commercials as part of its brand campaign – ‘Ab Khulkar phailegi Deewangi’. The three 40-seconders, carve out the very basic element within the common man. It doesn’t talk about brand Max, but about the deewanapan in everyone.

     

    The first of the three TVCs that went on-air on 15 December shows how an extremely slow tuk-tuk driver gets charged-up by listening to the ‘Dhoom’ song tune and starts cruising through the road in full speed.

     

    The second TVC shows bridesmaids along with an old aunt making a war cry for the bride ‘Chak De’ to perk her up from the anxiety of her suhagraat. The third TVC depicts how a furniture showroom salesman bitten by the Bollywood bug replicates the iconic Zanjeer movie scene while attending a customer.

     

    This year the channel has particularly borrowed dialogues and songs from key films like Zanjeer (1973), Dhoom and Chak De India. The films have a very subtle humorous appeal and the brand films are directed by ace ad film maker Anaam Mishra from Crome Pictures.

     

    Sony Max VP – marketing Vaishali Sharma believes that this will make the campaign more powerful. “It will help us integrate the brand seamlessly into the consumers’ life,” she says.  

     

    According to Sony Max senior VP and business head Neeraj Vyas, Hindi films have their own kind of crafting and now the germ is all over. “In the last 50 years of cinema, the characters and songs have become larger than life. There is filmy madness in everybody and now the madness is spreading. Till last year, we said ‘Deewana Bana De’ and showered some elements and this year we are saying that look, now the craziness is spreading.”

     

    Conceptualised by DDB Mudra, it took two months for the channel from planning to the execution of all the three commercials. Vyas found the scripts very cute and in the Max zone. When asked why the channel picked these three movies, he says, “It could have been anything else as well. But when you sit for a campaign for over two months you go through a lot of ideas and scripts. We thought that these were quite relevant and without being over-the-top funny.”

     

    According to Sharma every year the channel continues to strengthen its emotional connect with the consumers so that it can, within the space of Hindi movie genre, continue to occupy strong position and affinity in the hearts and minds of consumers.

     

    For Sharma , ‘Deewana Bana De’ as a positioning line, has lived for a long time but the channel’s attempt in the last one-two years has been to make it more relevant to people’s life.  “The impact that Bollywood films have on our lives is ingrained into our DNA. Also from the brand perspective, strengthening the fact that people from all strata’s continue to watch Max and owning the space of how movies impact our daily lives.”

     

    DDB Mudra Group chairman and CCO Sonal Dabral feels that the new campaign is all about infecting people with passion and love for this great Indian cinema and to encourage people to see the lighter side in every walk of life. He adds, “India is a country passionate and obsessed with ‘Bollywood’ and what better way to capture this unique obsession than by coming out with a campaign which pays homage to Indian cinema.”

     

    Sharma shares the learning that the channel has acquired over the years. One, to understand what role movies plays in people’s lives and two, how it is a big source of entertainment.  “Over the years how we have evolved as a brand is how we make ‘Deewana Bana De’ or Max as a brand more relatable. We have wide range of audience’s right from people in metros to LC1 and rural markets, but to find a brand essence and a campaign that cuts across audiences is a tricky task for us.”

     

    So to make the job easy, year-on-year the channel keeps in touch with the consumers by doing qualitative and quantitative research to find out how they are interacting with the brand and how movies on television forms a big chunk of their daily lives. “Especially when you keep going down to smaller and smaller towns, the whole aspect of ‘I wait to watch movies on television to brighten up my life’ is what consumers share the relation with the brand. So the brand affinity scores are very high for Max.”

     

    According to Vyas, the channel does hygiene research every year to keep understanding what the consumers want and to keep a tab on social relevant changes that keeps on happening across which also helps the channel in the kind of movies it picks.

     

    To give an extra dose of entertainment, apart from the brand campaigns, fillers like Bittu Bak Bak, Fully Deewana, etc also keep running throughout the day.

     

    On the marketing front, it’s a primarily television led campaign. Apart from both the movie properties – Max and Max 2, the commercials will also be available across the Sony network. Moreover, Max has bought space on 32 channels for over three weeks from other networks to promote the new campaigns. These include English news, regional channels, kids and music channels to a large extent. The 360 degree marketing plan also includes a digital campaign and cinema across key markets spread over the next one month.

    IFFI to pay tribute to Pran

    MUMBAI: The 44th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa from 20-30 November will pay tribute to the veteran actor Pran. The legendary Bollywood villain passed away in July this year. The festival will witness the screening of three of his most popular films – Jis Desh Main Ganga Behti Hai, Madhumati and Zanjeer.

     

    A true legend of Indian cinema, Pran defined the villain in Hindi cinema for over a decade and more in the 1960s and set the benchmark for the on-screen baddie, before carving out an equally glorious career as a character/supporting actor. As a film villain, such was the terror he infused in the hearts of film-goers that the apocryphal story goes that for over twenty years, when he ruled the world of cinema as a villain, no family in north India named a child ‘Pran’.

     

     Pran’s son Sunil Sikand and daughter Pinky Bhalla will be present for the screening. The film will be screened on the third and fourth day of the festival. Pran’s wife Shukla Sikand is also slated to attend the screening.

     

    IFFI director Shankar Mohan says, “As per the festival’s tradition, IFFI pays tribute to noted film personalities who passed away in the year preceding the festival. IFFI invites their family members, friends and well-wishers to attend the screenings of the artiste’s best works.”

     

    Last year, a special homage was paid to Yash Chopra at the festival.

    After making his foray into Bollywood with the remake of Zanjeer, the actor from down south is making some bigger moves… albeit the failure of his debut film, Ram Charan has been roped in for Salman Khan’s home production.

     

    Earlier, speculations were rife that Ram Charan was offered a film under Salman Khan’s home production. If latest reports are to be believed, the film will soon be launched. Apparently, Ram Charan was in Mumbai last week to discuss about the project that will be produced by Salman.

     

    Besides his Hindi project, Ram Charan is also working on a couple of Telugu films. The actor’s upcoming film Yevadu, directed by Vamsi Paidipally, is getting ready for a grand release. The film was scheduled to hit the screens on 10 October, but the release date was pushed further to pave way for Jr NTR’s Ramayya Vastavayya. Yevadu producer Dil Raju, who also happens to be the producer of Ramayya Vastavayya, had revealed that the Ram Charan-starrer might hit theatres during Diwali or Christmas.

     

    Ram Charan is also set to begin working in a new film, directed by Krishna Vamsi. The film, deemed as a family entertainer, will have Venkatesh teaming up with the Magadheera hero for the first time. The director is said to have completed the script and the film’s shooting is expected to begin soon.

    Grand Masti has a terrific weekend raking in a big moolah at the box office. The film, with huge support from single screens, has collected Rs 39.8 crore for its opening weekend. This is a sequel to the previous adult comedy Masti and the three friends are back together and this time they are coming together at their college reunion. The film stars Ritesh Deshmukh, Aftab Shivdasani and Vivek Oberoi.

     

    John Day has not been able to make a mark despite Naseeruddin Shah leading the cast. The film has managed to collect just about Rs 1.7crore for the first weekend.

     

    Horror Story, a grossly under publicised film, has managed to cross the Rs two crore mark in its first three days.

     

    Shuddh Desi Romance has had a good first week. A pleasant love story with a contemporary theme of live-in couple scared to commit through the institution of marriage, the film has collected Rs 35.7 crore for its first week.

     

    Zanjeer, much in news because of its copyrights controversy involving the writers of the original version and the production house, Prakash Mehra Productions, has turned out to be a damp squib, having collected just Rs 13.75 crore.

     

    Satyagraha, which failed to stir up the box office and collected Rs 51.7 crore in its first week, has added Rs 6.9 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 58.6 crore.

     

    Madras Café has collected Rs 1.1 crore in its third week to take its three week tally to Rs 40.65 crore.

     

    Channai Express has added Rs 1.1 crore in its fifth week thus taking its six week total to Rs 200.5 crore.

    Zanjeer, the supposed remake of the 1973 film by Salim Javed of the same name, which in turn was inspired by the 1967 Hollywood spaghetti Western, Death Rides A Horse, which went on to become a classic hit, was adapted by Apporva Lakhia and so mutilated that it has turned out to be a disaster that it deserved to be. From its poor casting to mediocre execution the film lacked on all counts, accounting for a poor Rs 9.45 crore for its opening weekend.

     

    Shuddh Desi Romance, a small budgeted entertainer catering to the thoughts of the contemporary youth, seeking company, relationship and sex sans commitment has worked well and is on its way to becoming a hit. The Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor starrer has collected Rs 22.2 crore.

     

    Madras Café starring John Abraham and Nargis Fakhri has not worked with the audience as it collected Rs 8.1 crore in its second week to take its total to Rs 39.55 crore for two weeks.

     

    Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara has earned the flop title, adding just Rs 50 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to 55.05 crore.

     

    Chennai Express that paired Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone once again after Om Shanti Om has collected Rs 4.7 crore in its fourth week to take its four week tally to Rs 199.4 crore.

    B.A. Pass has collected Rs 30 lakh in its fifth week thus taking its five week total to Rs 7.7 crore.

    Shuddh Desi Romance: A confused love story

    Shuddh Desi Romance in its theme is quite contrary to its title. There is nothing shuddh or desi about it. The film is more about current generation of urban youth who believe in relationships and live-in partners but no commitment as in a marriage.

    Cast: Rishi Kapoor, Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor (Debut).

     

    Sushant Singh Rajput is on his way to tie the knot. His baraat reaches the town and place of his bride to be, Vaani Kapoor. The mood is joyous; guests in all their fineries are present. An elder or whatever one may call him from Rajput’s side is Rishi Kapoor, a wedding caterer who also fixes up fake baraatis. In fact, he does just about everything related to the event of a wedding. It is time for the final commitment as the groom and bride come face to face to garland each other. That is when Rajput gets cold feet and on the pretext of going to the loo, he vanishes. The bride to be orders a cold drink to get over the shock.

     

    In a way, the one responsible for Rajput’s decision was Parineeti Chopra who was part of his baraat and occupying a seat next to his in the baraat bus. He is attracted to her, instinctively kisses her and also learns to smoke from her. He is impressed by her way of life. She lives alone in Jaipur, pursues her studies and also teaches English at a ‘Speak English’ kind of class. She also joins Rishi Kapoor’s gang of fake baraatis to earn some extra cash. Both start dating and soon Rajput moves in with her.

     

    The duo’s life is full of fun, romance and sex and on one night under the influence of alcohol, they decide to marry. Rishi Kapoor makes the arrangements and it is time to exchange garlands. But, this time, it is Parineeti who suddenly wants to visit the loo. Rajput has been paid in his own coin as the bride takes the same route as he did earlier.

     

    Rajput is not destined to stay without a woman. The girl he deserted, Vaani, has shifted to Jaipur after he ditched her. As Rishi Kapoor lures Rajput into playing a fake baarati in one more wedding, Vaani is boarding the same bus headed for wedding venue for she is a cousin of the groom. She decides to make friendship with him with the idea of taking revenge for what he had done to her.  In the process she falls for Rajput who has quickly forgotten Parineeti and is now in love with Vaani.

     

    Life is beautiful for the couple when, in this film with baraats and weddings as background, there is one more wedding to attend for Rajput and Vaani. As expected, Parineeti is there too. The host at the wedding creates a situation whereby both get to be together for some time. Both realise they are still in love. But Rajput is now in a moral quandary: Vaani has been so nice to him and so much in love with him, he does not want to betray her.

     

    In a film where women are depicted as more surefooted and of strong will, the problem solves itself thanks to one of the two women in love. Rajput and Parineeti decide to give getting married another try and again Rishi Kapoor does the needful. He is very worried about the future of his business. If men and women stay together without marriage, that would ruin his business. Who runs to the loo this time? Well, the film advocates live-in relationships and that is how things settle.

     

    The film has just four main characters in Rishi Kapoor, Rajput, Parineeti and Vaani in a shorter role compared to others. Rishi Kapoor plays one more different character with his usual aplomb. Rajput plays the uncertain youth living life on day-to-day basis and vulnerable to romance with ease. Parineeti is impressive and adds to her reputation as a confident performer. Vaani has a pleasant demeanour and smiles her way through a brief but a relevant role very well.

     

    Direction is good keeping an easy pace and generally keeping a pleasant atmosphere in the film. However, some trimming could have helped. The film has a couple of peppy numbers. Shot at some populated town locations and some scenic Rajasthan outdoors, it makes for pleasant viewing.

     

    Shuddh Desi Romance aims at contemporary youth as a lot many identify with the theme. Having opened well at both, single screens as well as multiplexes, this economically produced, digitally-released (no physical prints) film is sure to reap reasonably rich dividends.

     

    Zanjeer: A complete mockery of a classic

    While budgets have gone up to multi-crores, content has dried up. At their peak, Salim-Javed assured an interesting script though all the films they wrote could not become Zanjeer, Deewaar or Trishul. They got equal billing in the titles and made writers respectable in the industry. There were half a dozen other writers who were household names. Today, one can’t think of any script writer whose film people look forward to. Once in a while, one comes across a writer’s triumph in films like Dirty Picture, Kahaani, Vicky Donor or Oh My God! But, usually these turn out to be one-off affairs. The result is either remakes of South film, sequels or remakes of old hits. Agreed, one can’t better an old classic but can’t one refrain from slaughtering it?

     

    Ramcharan is a police officer in Hyderabad who does not believe in going by the rule book and believes in instant solutions. To showcase that, the film starts with Ramcharan bashing up a political protester who had blocked all the traffic on a main road for a couple of hours. This earns him his 17th transfer and he is despatched to Mumbai where he is welcomed by the commissioner of police with a warning to hold back his anger. So far so good, here onwards starts the piecemeal destruction of the original.

     

    A district collector on his way home with a toy for his little son happens to see fuel adulteration activities happening openly. He decides to click pictures with his cell phone as a proof. The goons notice him and burn him to death. Priyanka Chopra watches the incident and calls up the police. Chopra is an NRI from the US and is in town for a couple of days only to attend the wedding of her Facebook friend. She is asked to identify the dead body which she does and decides to return to the US. On the way to the airport, her vehicle is smashed by a truck with the purpose of killing her. Why should that be done when she is going back for good? In any case, the car she was in is burnt along with her money and passport. Ram Charan offers her shelter at his home.

     

    As if some button was clicked, Priyanka instantly falls in love with Ramcharan. He has a past which haunts him in his sleep. He dreams of a huge knife-wielding horse rider in a hood with a tattoo on his forearm. Also, his parents were murdered when they come out of a restaurant after celebrating his eighth birthday. Brought up by his policeman uncle, he also joins the force when he is grown up.

     

    There is no secret about who the culprit is behind the oil mafia who, obviously, turns out to be the killer behind his parents’ death. Meanwhile, Ram Charan is suspended from the force for killing a criminal in his custody with third degree torture. He is now free to go after the villain, Prakash Raj, as he does not have to follow the limitations of a policeman. There are a couple of one-upmanship scenes after which the inevitable climax fight follows as the villain is meted out a suitable death.

     

    Zanjeer is a totally botched up script and the stars also join the director to make a total mess of it. Ramcharan is good in action scenes but otherwise acts like any filmy cop, showing no passion or pain as he carries the burden of his parents’ death and the mystery man riding a horse. Priyanka puts on a juvenile act; what was she trying, playing a cute moppet? Prakash Raj plays his usual comic villain. So much so that without titles or co-stars in the frame it could be any of his films one is watching. Music is in overdose with just the first half having as many as six songs. Editing needed to be taut.

     

    Zanjeer fares poorly if compared to the original 1973 Zanjeer, this version is a sacrilege.

    Sanjay Dutt sings Qawali after 41 years in Apoorva Lakhia’s ‘Zanjeer’

    Actor Sanjay Dutt, who had acted as member of a qawali party forty-one years earlier in his father Sunil Dutt’s Reshma aur Shera as a child artiste, will be rendering a qawali once again as the iconic Sher Khan in the forthcoming re-imagined version of Zanjeer.

     

    While the new version being released on 7 September stars Ramsharan and Priyanka Chopra with Sanjay Dutt, the original starred megastar Amitabh Bachchan – who was also an artiste in Reshma aur Shera – with Jaya Bachchan.

     

    Sanjay’s formal debut had come years later in his father’s film Rocky, which went on to be a massive hit. Today after 41 years in the industry, Sanjay has over 150 films in his kitty.

     

    Dutt has donned a never-seen-before look. His look as Sher Khan which was revealed some time back in the trailer has already been admired by audiences.

     

    The actor himself was extremely psyched about doing the qawali sequence in the song Khochey Pathan Ki Zubaan and director Apoorva Lakhia is confident that this will be one of Sanjay Dutt’s most memorable performances on the big screen.

     

    Along with Sanjay Dutt Apoorva Lakhia’s tour de force Zanjeer stars an elite ensemble cast of Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra, Prakash Raj, Mahie Gill and Atul Kulkarni.

     

    Zanjeer has been produced by Reliance Entertainment, Puneet Prakash Mehra, Sumeet Prakash Mehra and Flying Turtle Films, and co-produced by Rampage Motion Pictures.

    Priyanka Chopra shakes her leg in an item number once again. After featuring in the item song ‘Pinky’ in Zanjeer, she is back again with her latkas and jhatkas for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela.

    This special song is said to be elaborately choreographed by Vishnu Deva and the shooting has already started.

    Also, sources claim a lavish and expensive set has been designed for the song and will have a team of 20 girl dancers. Since the movie is based on Gujarati culture, not only will Priyanka sport an ethnic look but even the song will have traditional elements and dance styles.

    Now Ravi Teja to foray into Bollywood

    MUMBAI: The South influx into Bollywood has gathered momentum. After Dhanush’s successful Hindi debut in Aanand Rai’s Raanjhanaa and Ramcharan’s Zanjeer that opens in September, it would be the turn of Ramcharan’s nearest rival in Hyderabad, Ravi Teja.

    Ravi Teja would debut in a double role in Samir Karnik’s Kaur & Singh. The film would be an action-comedy (Ravi Teja’s forte) in Hindi and Telugu. The Telugu version of the film would be entitled Laxmi Reddy.

    After doing successful double role in films like Vikramarkudu, the Telugu version of Rowdy Rathore. Director Samir Karnik confirms these developments and wanted to take his image to another level.

    Ravi Teja plays two brothers in Kaur & Singh. One of them is a con-man who constantly gets the good brother into trouble.
