  • The shape of Indian OTT universe circa 2021 according to Rethink Tech Research

MUMBAI: This should put OTT players on alert and gladden the hearts of linear TV distribution and programming executives. The latest numbers about how India’s video guzzlers are going to consume VoD services by the UK-based industry tracker Rethink Technology Research reveal that India will have about 14.6 million VoD subscribers by 2021. Indiantelevision.com estimates are that, comparatively, Indian DTH will account for about 75 million active subscribers and cable TV more than 100 million by then.

Clearly, VoD will have made a marginal dent in eroding linear TV distribution platforms stranglehold on Indian viewers thanks to the lower sticker prices for cable TV and DTH, which will possibly continue to be in play even in 2021. Cord-cutting, which is becoming increasingly common in many markets, may not really make its way to Indian shores.

Yes, the data suggests that India will be the second largest market in Asia Pacific after China which will account for 60 per cent of the Asia Pacific’s $10 billion subscription revenues and 200 million subs, by 2021. (The corresponding figures for 2016 are at $6.5 billion and 100 million respectively.)

“Asia Pacific is made up of a multitude of contrasting individual markets, making it fragmented and complex with broadband penetration above 50%, in some regions and below 10% in others,” said a statement from Rethink Technology Research.
There will be a hard pitched battle for subscription shares between the 30 odd OTT players in the game in India. By then probably many more OTT providers will have stomped into the terrain. And hence one wonders how many of them will be profitable.

Both, Netflix and Amazon Prime, are just about beginning to plonk down top dollars – like India has not seen before – on original shows which should hop on to their India – and later global – offering by next year. Hotstar and Viacom18’s Voot have also been investing heavily to acquire customers. Estimates are that the two have pumped in around Rs 4000 million and Rs 1400 million, respectively, since launch. Others such as Viu, NextGTV, Spuul, ErosNow, Hooq, SonyLiv, YuppTV and Alt Balaji too are in a customer acquisition phase, having just got onto the runway.

The good news, according to Rethink, is that pure play SVoD services in APAC (expected revenues by 2021: $6.29 billion) will dominate operator-supplied services.

As far as APAC is concerned, the research house predicts that Indonesia and Japan will be third and fourth, with each increasing to 9.96 million and 8.1 million by 2021, respectively.

  • YuppTV launches ‘Mini Theatre’ to premiere movies for expats

MUMBAI: YuppTV, an OTT leader in the South-Asian content, announced the launch of its new platform, Mini Theatre. YuppTV makes new movies available on the Mini Theatre platform on the first day or the following weekend of theatrical release, even in geographies where the movie is not available outside of India. The movies shall be made available on YuppTV platform only on Samsung, Apple, Roku, LG, Sony TV Devices/interfaces.

Commenting on the latest development, Uday Reddy, Founder and CEO of YuppTV said, “At YuppTV, we have a great opportunity of bringing best quality South-Asian content to our users across the Globe. Launching Mini Theatre is another step in the same direction. The release of various Indian movies is often limited only to very few selected geographies across the world and sometimes limited only to the Indian subcontinent. Hence, users end up missing out on these high-quality and entertaining movies missing a worldwide release. Following the launch of Mini Theatre, our users outside of India will have the opportunity to access new Indian movie releases, just like they used to, back at home in India. Furthermore, filmmakers may now showcase their movies to a global audience, notwithstanding exorbitant investment for an overseas release. Since the launch is slated to benefit every stakeholder in the ecosystem, we look forward to receiving a huge response from both, expat audiences and filmmakers.”

YuppTV is further exercising complete piracy control of the movies showcased in the Mini Theatre. Users need to accept the piracy agreement conditions before they start watching the movie. The movie shall be made available on a pay-per-view basis with a 6-hour viewing window. Furthermore, the movies are secured with DRM, Invisible user based/Forensic watermarking and encryption and users are authenticated by mobile and location verification. Under the Invisible or Forensic Watermarking, each user who will get the stream to watch the movie will have unique identification in the invisible mode. It is an imperceptible & non-removable unique identifier that is embedded in the video, enabling YuppTV to trace any content breach. The pirate, if in case found guilty of breaching the privacy guidelines, will be charged with a heavy penalty.

  • YuppTV diversifies into streaming and news reporting tech solutions

MUMBAI: Yupp TV is known for its OTT SVOD service which delivers a rafter of Indian live channels, 5,000 movies and original programming to 25 million overseas people of Indian origin. CEO Uday Reddy has been doggedly bent on spreading the app’s reach over the past decade when he conceived it.

Now Reddy — who roped in the Rajesh Kamat, Paul Aielio-headed Emerald Media to pump in $50 million to take the company to the next level last year — is steering it into the tech solutions space. For starters, he is all geared up to offer the tech that powers his OTT service to other content owners, TV producers, broadcasters or corporations wanting to set up their own SVOD service without having to run from pillar to post.

“We are offering a white label solution to companies wanting to enter the online streaming space,” says Reddy. “We have built a robust platform serving almost 300 devices and working on Android, iOs, smart TVs, tablets and what have you. We have worked more than 10 years on the tech and finetuned it like a violin. Whether it is the payment gateway, the search, the recommendation, upscaling when the subscriber base grows – our clients will get the entire solution.”

Reddy points out that the integrated service he is offering is in the realms of the solutions companies such as Accenture and Cisco offer. “Others such as Ooyala, Kaltura, Brightcove – give you SDKs which you have to build around,” he says. “Our advantage is that we are offering the entire solution.”

He points out that his white label solution has already received interest from some clients internationally. “We hope to have completed 10-15 installations by end 2017,” he reveals. In addition to this, he is quite kicked up about an in-house developed live video streaming device Freedocast which is in its second generation and has been labelled Freedocast Pro. “ It helps in connecting the camera to the HDMI port and directly go live through it to any social media platform such as Facebook, Youtube and Twitter which can be controlled by the phone,” says Reddy.

“Any celebrity can use it to reach his audience live, any reporter, any one. It is a very simple device.”

Freedocast, Reddy points out, will support both 3G and 4G and 1080p and 720p streams in the first phase, and the upgraded version will support 4K streams as well. The device has been priced at $249 and a commercial launch is expected in June.

Currently, he and his team are focused on a global rollout of the product. Distribution is going to be through resellers, distributors and video equipment seller channels in India. B&H photo is the main partner in US.

Reddy demoed the product at the recently completed APOS in Bali (Indonesia) and is expected to make some major announcements about it at Broadcast Asia in Singapore as well.

He points out that Freedocast Pro is going to come as a shot in the arm for Indian news broadcasters, which number more than 300 in India. “They are significantly cheaper than DSNG trucks and vans and backpacks which have sticker prices running into multiples of ten thousand dollars,” he points out. “With Freedocast Pro any news reporter can, over 4G or wifi, deliver the news to the TV station with the portable device.”

Reddy reveals that YuppTV is working on the next generation of the product which will enhance the entire editing and also allow for multicamera options. “Freedocast Pro is being manufactured in China but the entire design, chip set, hardware, software have been done in-house.”

A news channel tech head points out that Freedocast has limitations in that it requires 4G or wifi to be effective as compared to the DSNGs which use satellite transmission from anywhere. “What if there is no wifi or 4G connectivity? Anyway the 4G connectivity is patchy even in the metros,” he says. “This could be a challenge. We will not give up our DSNG vans. But, may be, we will try some of them for our news reporters.”

Amongst the news channels which have placed orders and are trying out Freedocast Pro figure ETV and TV5 in Hyderabad.

“4G connectivity is only going to improve and the way broadband is being deployed, I don’t see this as a limitation,” says Reddy. “We have perfected our adaptive bitrate streaming technology to work at even 72 kbps connectivity in villages and smaller towns. YuppTV works perfectly well there too.”

He points out that both the white label solution and Freedocast will help the company break even by end-2017.
