OneOTT Intertainment CEO Yugal Kishore Sharma moves on

Mumbai: OneOTT Intertainment (OIL) chief executive officer Yugal Kishore Sharma has chosen to move on after a successful six-year assignment. OneOTT Intertainment is the broadband subsidiary of Nxtdigital.

Sharma will pursue new ventures in the field of sports and e-sports and nurture Hindustan FC, a football club he has been associated with for several years, said the statement.

Sharma has led and built up the broadband business of the media group in India’s fourth-largest private ISP (internet service provider) with over one million subscribers. A telecom industry veteran, Sharma has been instrumental in driving OneOTT Intertainment and building up the various verticals, especially the innovative and highly successful ISP strategic partnership aggregator model.

“Yugal has played a pivotal role in the significant growth of OIL through his radical thinking, innovative strategies and evolving business models over the years,” said OneOTT Intertainment chairman AK Das. “Today, OIL is a highly respected brand across 150 cities and towns with a very high quality of service, with customer centricity at its core. Much of that credit is attributed to Yugal’s leadership from the front, propelling ONE Broadband into India’s top four private ISPs. We take this opportunity to thank him for his contribution to the growth of the company and wish him all the very best as he pursues his new ventures.”

We aim to double our current subscriber base: OIL CEO Yugal Kishore Sharma

Mumbai: OneOTT Intertainment Ltd (OIL), the broadband subsidiary of NxtDigital Ltd (NDL), the media vertical of the Hinduja Group crossed one million wired home broadband subscribers. OIL added over 200,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter of FY22 recording a growth of 65 per cent over FY21.

In an interaction with IndianTelevision.com, OIL CEO Yugal Kishore Sharma speaks about the progress made and the goals for the broadband subsidiary.

What targets has OneOTT Intertainment set for the year?

OIL has achieved a robust growth clocking a CAGR of close to 75 per cent in the last six years and we hope to continue this momentum in fiscal 2023. Whilst we remain on track to add over half a million customers, if not more, in this fiscal; we do have an ambitious plan to double our current subscriber base. This will propel us into India’s top three private internet service providers.

What is the game plan to get there?

At OIL, the success mantra has been our focused approach to extend a consistent customer experience bundled with ‘predictable & proactive customer responsiveness and care.’ The success of this mantra is reflected in our performance; in Q4 of FY22, we added over 200,000 customers, a milestone achievement by any yardstick.

We launched a FTPD or ‘faster-than-pizza-delivery’ initiative that challenges our customer responsiveness to be faster and more efficient than that of QSR brands. This has led OIL to enhance its SLAs resulting in lowest-customer-Churn well below the industry average of one per cent.

What is the USP of OneOTT Intertainment versus competition?

The USP is embedded in one of our groups principle ‘Partnership for Growth.’ This is a model that is driven actively by NxtDigital across the digital distribution space; and as a subsidiary of NxtDigital we have adapted the model effectively in the broadband industry. OIL has evolved an industry first and innovative ISPs Aggregator Model that has contributed to rejuvenating India’s passionate entrepreneurs running small and medium ISPs.

The model continues to successfully consolidate and unify the MSO ISP Industry as a strategic alliance partner. We’re pleased to state that we should have more than 50 such ISPs or alliance partners within our OIL umbrella in the first half of this fiscal.

What growth in digital consumption was seen during a lockdown? How were you able to capitalise on it?

Team OIL, along with its parent digital platforms company NxtDigital, introduced the industry to its vision of providing an always-on-high-speed-internet-access to transform the lives of the customers for their on-demand entertainment. In fact, we have aptly coined a new term for such a service demand – Intertainment.

OIL is better prepared to offer its Intertainment services across OTT, live TV, VOD, movies, and gaming. At the onset of the first lockdown, our customers and their family members had to work, study and play from home, thereby, increasing the bandwidth consumption by almost 50 per cent. OIL through its Intertainment platform along with an innovative product-mix and promotional bundles was able to meet customer demands without passing any incremental cost.

Which are the key cities and towns where you see the most potential?

Our vision is a reflection of our groups mission – to facilitate digital inclusion in India through innovative technology, keeping alive the entrepreneurship spirit of small and medium ISPs. We aspire to serve as many as citizens as possible across the country. We will continue to leverage the vast network of over 1,500 cities and towns that NxtDigital currently delivers digital television and other services to.

What is the big challenge in delivering high speed to consumers?

There are challenges, but we’re also grateful to the government for bringing in appropriate guidelines to help the industry accelerate and grow. We are sure that two key issues that do often serve as stumbling blocks viz Right of Way (RoW) permissions and the need for standardisation on concurrency and contention ratios across ISPs and TSPs will be addressed soon.

Could you talk about the tie-ups that you have with companies like Facebook, Nokia?

OIL’s strategic alliance with Facebook India has made fast internet not just available but also reliable and affordable on Wi-Fi and other last-mile-access technologies at Dharavi and other such areas.

We are very conscious about best-in-class technology and have partnered with leading technology companies like Nokia, Juniper, Huawei and others across core, aggregate, access, analytics and security solutions. OIL’s Technology Partners have also come up with innovative ‘Enterprise-5G’ solutions that can be leveraged extensively.

Finally what is your view on 5G and how it will revolutionise data consumption?

With 5G, the world will be much faster connected on mobile internet with 10 times data speeds as compared to current networks. This newfound capability could see the emergence of cutting-edge solutions to benefit users.

The top ISPs along with ‘Enterprise-5G’ spectrum could have the capability and resources to build large campus-wide connectivity solutions for enterprise networks powered on a common 5G backhaul. 5G rollout topology is on a ‘small-cell-architecture’ network which is in a radius of half a kilometre vis-à-vis 1.5~2 Kms of a cellular network architecture. This would complement OIL’s Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) network roll-out and related services.

MUMBAI: OneOTT Intertainment (OIL), the broadband subsidiary of NXTDigital (NDL), the media vertical of the global conglomerate, Hinduja Group announced that it has crossed one million wired home broadband subscribers.

OIL achieved this milestone by adding over 200,000 subscribers in the fourth quarter of the financial year 2021-2022 recording a growth of 65 per cent as compared to the financial year 2020-2021. One Broadband claims to now be India’s fourth-largest private Internet Service Provider (ISP), extending its presence across India.

The increased competition in this space fuelled by the demand for more online services has triggered consolidation which has benefitted larger ISPs, enabling OIL’s growth inorganically. Commenting on this milestone, OneOTT Intertainment CEO Yugal Kishore Sharma said, “The significant growth trajectory of One Broadband’s high-speed internet connectivity has been achieved by its “available-reliable-affordable” offerings.”

“Its focussed approach towards predictable proactive customer responsiveness and care has been highly appreciated by subscribers. Internet use has moved beyond browsing and social networking to work-from-home, online Education, OTT Entertainment, e-Gaming, online-Shopping online-Health, e-Governance and others,” he added.

“At OIL, we have adapted to this consumption surge by doubling our internet capacity on the supply side without passing any additional cost to our consumers to maintain a consistent customer experience during the pandemic,” Sharma stated.

One Broadband, under its flagship brand, OneGigaFiber claims to offer speeds of up to 1 Gbps on its FTTH (Fibre-To-The-Home) Network.

Hinduja Group announces its foray into Sports Leagues

MUMBAI: Hinduja Group’s ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT LTD and IN ENTERTAINMENT INDIA LTD are now the proud owners of the ‘Mumbai Ninjas’ – the Mumbai Franchise in the Ultimate Karate League (UKL). Mumbai Ninjas are one of the six teams that shall feature in the first season of the UKL Ultimate Karate League starting on 11th January 2019.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Yugal Kishore Sharma, CEO of Hinduja Group’s ONEOTT iNTERTAINMENT LTD and IN ENTERTAINMENT INDIA LTD said, “Not only the technical rules, the business model of UKL too is unique that guarantees a very sound eco-system for Team Owners. It is probably the only Professional Sports League in India that is setting out for 3 Seasons in its inaugural year”

Along with Mumbai Ninjas, the other teams that shall feature in the first season of UKL are Bengaluru Kings, Chandigarh Fighters, Delhi Bravehearts, Kolkata Radicals and Ranchi Rebels. The debut match is all set to take place at Bengaluru’s Koramangala Indoor Stadium followed by its final leg at Talkatora Indoor Stadium, New Delhi.

With world champions and renowned national players, the UKL Ultimate Karate League will feature matches that are entertaining and action packed – appealing to all Sports fans in India and across the world. UKL has signed World Champions as Marquee Players in each Team. Legendary Masters Sensei Ilija Jorga and Sensei Vladimir Jorga will be present during the entire Season.

Mr. Yugal Sharma also added, “Mumbai Ninjas Team has the World’s Best Fighter Mr. Calin Marincas from Romania as its Marquee Player. Calin has 6 World Championship Titles under his belly.”

Karate was not a spectator sport till the Research & Development works of Sensei Rajeev Sinha resulted in creation of unique technical rules that are specifically structured from televisions’ perspective. Fan-engagement is maximized and the new rules bring in thrilling action as never seen before in a real-time team matches.

“The main purpose of establishing UKL was to trigger an aspirational connect amongst the existing and future Karate practitioners. It is noteworthy that there are over 190 million practitioners of Karate around the world who pay to learn and compete. However, the current amateur format does not provide platform for trainees to dream of becoming Ronaldos, Dhonis or Tendulkars of Karate as the rules of amateur competitions are too boring for general spectators. With UKL in place, we expect steep rise in its following in India”, said Sensei Rajeev Sinha, Chairman of IPKC.

UKL has opted for episodic telecast in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Maldives and Sri Lanka over Discovery Channel’s DSPORT. “We preferred episodic telecasts on Sundays Prime Time for 18-weeks and repeat telecast on weekdays, totaling 36 days over 5 months of visibility over television” said Sensei Rajeev Sinha.

UKL has tied-up with Czech Republic based QuickMedia to broadcast UKL content to rest of the world over its OTT platform.

Additionally, UKL has carved out unique Women Empowerment Program #NoMoreMeToo. “The whole world was recently engulfed in #MeToo wave. But that is merely a 'problem statement’ and not a solution. We have revived our women empowerment project ‘Be-Your-Own-Weapon’ with #NoMoreMeToo”, added Sensei Sinha.
