Zee TV strengthens weekend with Janbaaz Sinbad

MUMBAI: The general entertainment channel of media mogul Subhash Chandra’s media conglomerate, Zee TV, is all set to take Sunday programming one notch higher with its new offering Janbaaz Sinbad at the 7pm time slot.

The new fiction show has been pitched against Star Plus’ top rated prime time soaps Saath Nibhaana Saathiya and Yeh Hai Mohabbatein. This could just be a beginning of a new era in television. So far only Star was experimenting with original content on Sunday, but with the entrance of Zee, the competition is sure to to heat up. There are other GEC’s too which are exploring weekend opportunities according to sources.

“Jointly produced by Sagar Pictures and Ashvini Yardi, Janbaaz Sinbad will be a one hour long weekend show. The show will hit TV screens from 27 December,” informed a source close to the development.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Sagar Pictures producer Meenakshi Sagar said, “Janbaaz Sinbad is about the adventure of Sinbad and good versus. evil. So audiences will see a very different side through this show that they haven’t watched yet on Indian television. The fantasy and adventure genre has not been yet explored much on Indian television since a very long time, so to capture that market we came up with Sinbad.

Meenakshi informed, “It will be longer than a 45 mins show because every episode is like a movie, and that cannot be shown in a shorter duration. There is drama, adventure and action which required more than 45 mins.”

Janbaaz Sinbad is set in the realms of fictional fantasy – the story of an adventure hero on a voyage to discover the undiscovered. Sinbad the sailor gets thrown into a tumultuous journey across every sea, through dangerous face-offs with wizards, sorceresses, strange tribes and creatures. His quest is not one of tiding over the mere manifestations of evil, but uprooting evil itself.

“Advertisers are looking for eyeballs, so its up to the audience whether they accept the time band or not. As of now, in terms of viewership for early evening time slot that I can recall, the numbers are not lucrative,” said a senior media planner on the condition of anonymity. He further added, “Ads rates are based on viewership and keep changing. Higher the viewership, higher will be the ad rates.”

&TV has no original content airing on the Sunday 7pm time slot, while Life OK airs Savdhaan India: India Fights Back repeat telecast at 7pm. Sony Entertainment Television has a CID repeat telecast on during the same time band. Sab TV telecasts Tarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma (Repeat) and Colors starts its original programming at 8 pm time band with its new weekend fiction show Naagin.

  • Star Plus rolls out extensive marketing campaign for ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’

Star Plus rolls out extensive marketing campaign for ‘Sumit Sambhal Lega’

MUMBAI: Taking a diversion from the age old Hindi phrase – ‘Mard ko dard nahi hota’ (men don’t feel pain), Star Plus has come up with a unique marketing campaign for its new show Sumit Sambhal Lega with the catchphrase ‘Har Mard Ka Dard,’ which signifies the plight of every married man.

As part of a marketing campaign for Sumit Sambhal Lega, which is the official adaptation of Everybody Loves Raymond, Star Plus has devised an innovative and strategic 360 degree marketing campaign based on an insight on the catch phrase.

Every piece of communication was aligned to this thought, starting with the on-air campaign that talked about the concept of the show and laid the entire foundation of the campaign. The initial promo was followed by a series of dedicated promos tailor-made for news and sports channels. Furthermore, existing male protagonists of Star Plus’ shows like Yeh Hai Mohabbatein and Ye Rishta Kya Kehlata Hai were roped in for integrated content that also talked about ‘Har Mard Ka Dard’ to establish a connect with the masses.

On the radio front, existing properties were integrated with the concept of ‘Har Mard Ka Dard’ to drive home the message. What’s more, the cast was also featured on top radio channels across seven cities. For the first time, on the launch day, a complete radio station takeover was witnessed with male RJs taking centre stage for one entire day. In addition, an unique on-ground consumer activation was conducted in Delhi where the listeners of Red FM were invited for a t?te-?-t?te with the protagonist Sumit.

Continuing its streak of firsts, Star Plus also created co-branded content on the digital platform with ‘Being Indian’ that gave the viewers a peek into the married man’s world. In addition, a platform called ‘Dard Anonymous was designed for men to come and confess real life anecdotes of different situations they have faced with their families after marriage. The show’s characters also came alive in an interactive YouTube masthead that was created in a way that let the viewers choose between the mother and wife on behalf of the protagonist Sumit – both leading him to get an earful from the other. Instagram too was flooded with unique comic strips that was designed with the characters of Sumit Sambhal Lega in funny situations with witty one-liners and speech bubbles.

An extensive outdoor marketing strategy was rolled out with dynamic hoardings strategically plastered across Mumbai.

Star Plus also roped in PVR Cinemas for integration with Sumit Sambhal Lega that included lenticular image standees of Sumit being boxed by his wife and then his mother in turn. There was also extensive F&B branding of the show on the menus, popcorn tubs and even the nomenclature of combo meals that were recreated with Sumit Sambhal Lega.

  • Star Plus takes a leap in storytelling with ‘Badtameez Dil’

Star Plus takes a leap in storytelling with ‘Badtameez Dil’

MUMBAI: The country’s numero uno general entertainment channel (GEC) Star Plus is definitely keeping pace with the changing taste of viewers. Star Plus, over the years, has changed the way GECs told stories and made the characters a household name.

A year back, with shows like VeeraPyaar Ka Dard Hai Meetha Meetha Pyaara Pyaara,Yeh Hai MohabbateinEk Hassena ThiIndia’s Raw StarAirlinesNisha Aur Uske Cousins and Everest – the channel had moved its programming strategy towards youngsters.

Star Plus general manager Gaurav Banerjee once stated that with consumer’s taste evolving, the channel, which entertains the youngest democracy in the world, needs to change as well. And more recently with Tu Mera Hero, Tere Shehar Mein and Dosti, Yaariyan, Manmarziyan, it has touched the hearts of the youth.

Taking another leap in storytelling, the channel has launched Phir Bhi Na Maane… Badtameez Dil, a love story between a VJ and a business head. Produced by Tequila Shot Productions’ Saurabh Tewary, it will air from 29 June from Monday to Saturday at 8.30 pm.

On the title of the show, Tewary believes that it is very important to name the show, which is clutter breaking. “In today’s scenario, the first communication that happens is the name and we wanted it to be little different at every level. Today, if anyone is discussing the name of the show for 30 seconds or a minute, I think the job is done,” he states.

The story is about two characters who get separated because of their misunderstandings and the manipulations of others only to meet again after seven years to resolve the unsettled issues and misunderstandings.

Tewary reveals that the narrative of the show is very different and because the narrative is different, it wanted to name the show slightly hatke. The characters are slightly edgy and over-the-top, but the production house has managed to keep it within the family space making it a hardcore family show.

Abeer Malhotra, played by Pearl V Puri is a VJ with Groove Music channel who leads a charming and luxurious life. Whereas Asmita Sood, who plays the character of Meher Purohit, is a practical and dedicated woman who is the business head of the same music channel and has reached this pinnacle of life with a lot of hard work.

For the first time on Indian television, a daily soap will have an album of five songs recorded exclusively for it, which is sung by Darshan Rawal, the runner up of the singing reality show, India’s Raw Star.

    Finite Love Story

Tewary reveals that he plans to make it a finite show and thus has decided to create only 300-350 episodes. “It is impossible to narrate a love story for ages and ages. Love stories are always finite shows and cannot be kept running for a longer period otherwise the show will lose its relevance and visibility,” he reasons.

Challenging to produce content for six days a week

Tewary feels that producing a daily fiction for six days a week is a challenging job and becomes far more difficult when it is a love story. “In a love story there are not multiple tracks and it is generally around two characters and one has to write episodes and scenes around those two characters. And the moment you shift the gear from those two characters to the other, your show starts falling and at the same time you are creating content for six days a week which is little tough to crack,” he said.

He explained that it puts a lot of pressure on writers and the entire crew and team. “But I guess, this is the kind of madness one needs to deal with when you know that the outcome has to be good,” he said.

Tewary has written the episodic story. However, apart from him there are another six writers onboard. As of now, the production house has canned 12 episodes and by the time the show goes on-air, it will have another six-seven episodes ready to go.

    Demanding Time Slot

The show will be competing with other shows like Jamai Raja on Zee TV, Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah on Sab, Udaan on Colors, Muh Boli Shaadi on Sony Entertainment Television (SET) and Kalash…Ek Vishwaas on Life OK.

Tewary believes that all these are different shows, from family drama to social based to a family entertainer and he wants to cater to all the audiences, which these shows in today’s scenario absorb. “That is why we have kept the base like that and designed the story in that particular manner. We want to cater to the larger audience base starting from 16 years to 30 years old,” he concluded.

  • MIPCOM 2014: Star India eyes newer formats, greater reach

MIPCOM 2014: Star India eyes newer formats, greater reach

CANNES: It is a meeting place for the content industry across the globe. And this is precisely what the seven member team of Star India is doing in Cannes, at the ongoing MIPCOM 2014. The network, which includes Hindi general entertainment channels: Star Plus and Life OK as well as its movie cluster: Star Movies, Star Movies Action, Star Gold, and Movies OK is having a busy MIPCOM.

While a three member team is here selling its content, which ranges from drama to mythology, a four member team: two each for GECs and movie channels is looking to buy formats that can be adapted for the Indian audiences, both fiction and non-fiction.

Uncountable meetings have kept the seven member team busy on both day one and day two of the market, which will be here till 16 October, the last day of MIPCOM 2014.

On sale is the entire cluster of shows from both Star Plus and Life OK. But what is being pushed more is Yeh Hai Mohabbatein, Ek Hasina Thi, Saraswatichandra and Mahabharat, apart from its other hit shows, including the just launched Airlines, Nisha Aur Uske Cousins and the biggest hit on Life OK, Mahadev.

While the GEC cluster is looking at the entire world market for both selling and buying shows and formats, the English movie cluster is focusing on Hollywood movies.

The number one channel in the Hindi GEC space, as per the TAM TV ratings, is also of key importance to 21st Century Fox co-chief operating officer James Murdoch.  “The business in India has been doing great. We are the number one network there. If we continue to innovate and lead in India, it will prove to be a game changer for us,” he had said during his keynote, here in Cannes.

  • Star Plus’ ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’ gets dual time slot

Star Plus’ ‘Yeh Hai Mohabbatein’ gets dual time slot

MUMBAI: Star Plus and Balaji Telefilms relationship goes way back. The shows from the production house’s banner captured almost all the slots and made the channel flourish on the TAM TV ratings chart.

Currently, Yeh Hai Mohabbatein (YHM), which was launched on 3 December 2013, had hit the television screens at a dead slot (11 pm) where no other broadcaster dared to experiment.

But the channel decided to take the bold move and was confident that one day the show will succeed. And today, if one goes as per the ratings, it ranks number four on Star Plus leaving behind even the older shows. In the week 37 of TAM TV ratings, it garnered 5,245 TVTs, down from 5,730 TVTs.

From 22 September, the show will occupy a dual time slot and will air six days a week at both 7:30 pm and 11:00 pm. The series will replace Saraswatichandra which has been struggling with low numbers at the ratings chart.

Star Plus SVP marketing Nikhil Madhok explains the reason behind the move. According to him, the move was made after audiences’ feedback that a certain section of viewers found the 11 pm slot too late in night.

He adds, “It has a very loyal audience with the highest time spent on Hindi general entertainment channel (GEC). The show is really popular but a lot of people kept telling us, especially youngsters, that it was too late for them to stay awake and watch considering they have their schools and colleges the next day.”

Madhok believes that prior to this, time slot movements were done by GECs usually when it wanted to shift a non-performing show to a competitive big show or early evenings or afternoons. But this is for the first time a top performer show is being shifted primarily to gain more viewership.

The channel feels that the advantage of doing this is twofold. One, a lot of people who were not able to watch the show at 11 pm can now watch it at 7:30 pm. And secondly, audiences who love YHM get two opportunities to watch the show.

“This was a show where repeat viewing the next day or viewing on online digital medium is very high. So the dual airing will not only help the existing viewers who love the show to watch it twice but also add a whole new set of viewers,” states Madhok.

The channel underwent a research where it stated that at 11:00 pm, the number of people available is far lesser than 7:30 pm and contributes only 60 per cent of the overall audience in the community.

Madhok and the makers are confident that since the content will remain same at both the slots, it will garner good ratings at both time slots. YHM has got India Gate Basmati Rice as its title sponsor.
