    Star Gold’s HD push

    MUMBAI: It’s getting high on High definition (HD). We are referring to the Star network’s Hindi  movie channel Star Gold which has strategically, started premiering movies first on Star Gold HD, then following up with a first airing on its standard definition (SD) service.

    It’s all in the line of giving its viewers a value add.  Explains Star Gold executive VP Hemal Jhaveri: “We are categorically looking at premiering certain content that we have acquired only on Star Gold HD. It’s a very clear vision we have for keeping the FPCs for both the HD and SD feeds very different from one another. If a viewer is going to pay premium prices he deserves something extra, so we figured why not premiere movies, may be a week or even a month in advance, than our SD feeds. We are clearly focused on strengthening our HD portfolio and it does attract and appeal to premium audiences. ”

    Amongst the first films to get this treatment was the Saif Ali Khan starrer Bullett Raja which had its HD premiere on 21 February followed by the SD premier a day later.  Youth centric flick Yaariyan which is to have its SD first run on 21 March at 8 pm premiered on Star Gold HD on 16 March. 

    And Jhaveri is quite buoyed by the viewer feedback that Yaariyan has generated. Says he:  “We have always focused on offering a mix of varied movie genres to our audiences, with entertaining content. Being a youth centric film, Yaariyan has connected very well with the younger generation and with the music being very popular among the audience we are positive of receiving a good response for the premiere.”

    Star India has close to 33 channels in its network. And Jhaveri says it leaves no stone unturned in terms of promoting the big ticket film premieres airing on Star Gold and Star Gold HD on all its channels.  He adds: “We also carry out a 360 degree marketing drive for the movies as well. We treat each movie on its merit, some require heavier push with on-air promotions and some would require a separate campaign. So each movie is treated on its content merit.”

    Jhaveri believes the HD premiere tack will work well on the advertising front. Says he: “We are really sure that more and more brands will want to reach out to premiere customers through our HD feed. It’s been great in terms of qualitative feedback and we are confident of building more traction for our HD portfolio.”

    Meanwhile, he points out that the network is going easy on handing out fat cheques to buy films this year as the market is overheated.  “We have already made enough acquisitions last year but as far as this year is concerned we are going to be really selective and to a certain extent not really acquire any movie,” discloses Jhaveri. “For the first time you will see a lot of unsold movies in the market, so we are just being very stringent in the content we acquire for this year and will do so only if the need arises. ” 

    Star Gold has a movie library of 1,100 titles which it shares with its sister channel Movies OK. In 2012, the network had acquired over 500 films from the Viacom 18 group followed by the deal with superstars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn in early 2013 for all their films till 2017.  Additionally, the network signed a deal for other exciting movies for its 2014 movies line up. Some of the high profile premieres slated for the year include: Jai HoKickBombay VelvetBang BangRoyAction JacksonSingham 2HamshakalsBobby Jasoos and Creature.

    To its credit is the information tidbit that the network has successfully premiered the maximum number of Rs 100 crore Bollywood films, including blockbusters such as SinghamBodyguardRa.OneHousefull 2Bol BachchanSon of SardaarDabangg 2 and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag.

    The telecast of Yaariyan should help nudge its viewership – which saw a slippage last week -up.   Star Gold SD received 164,983 GVTs in week 10 of TAM ratings against 176,596 GVTs in week 9 (-11,613) even as sister channel Movies OK generated 130,606 GVTs in week 10 against 116,767 GVTs (-13,839).

    Solo release ‘Gunday’ makes the most at BO

    MUMBAI: Gunday made the most of its combination of two young heroes with growing popularity, its music and Valentine’s Day release date to take a bumper Friday at the box office with a figure of 16.12 crore. Being a solo release also helped. The box office levelled out on Saturday with 12.63, rising again on Sunday to 15.18. The first weekend tally of 43.93 already qualifies the film as another hit for Yash Raj Films.

     

    Hasee Toh Phasee with a weekend of 15.75 crore remained steady on the lower side during the week to collect 25.35 in its first week.

     

    Of the three other releases, Babloo Happy Hai, Ya Rab and Heartless, only the last one managed to reach near one crore mark.

     

    Jai Ho added 3.7 crore in its third week taking its three week total to 104.9 crore.

     

    Yaariyan, coming to the end of its run, added 30 lakh in the fifth week to take its five week tally to 32.95 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya has added 30 lakh in its fifth week to take its five week tally to 26.25 crore.

    MUMBAI: While Amitabh Bachchan has followers from all age groups, a few younger fans may be added to his fan base as he will soon be seen with rapper Honey Singh in the movie Bhootnath Returns. And the credit for the collaboration goes to Bhushan Kumar of T-Series who has brought them together.

     

    The rapper has composed a special number for the film. Big B, who has always been at the core of experimentation has proved it yet again that age isn’t a barrier for anything. This special number is yet another nouveau offering from the icon to look forward to.

     

    Kumar and Honey Singh have earlier given chartbusters such as ‘Sunny’ from Yaariyan, Lungi Dance from Chennai Express among others.

    MUMBA: It has been a dull scene at the box office windows all over as even the Salman Khan film, Jai Ho, has behaved way below expectations. The single screens were made to pay high MGs (the demand was “More than MGs paid for Dhoom3!). All stand to lose 50 to 60% of the MGs paid. They had a happy ending to year 2013 with Dhoom3 but have had a bad start to 2014. Also, there is no major film in sight in near future to rest their hopes on.

     

    Salman Khan’s sermonising fare, Jai Ho, has not been able to draw crowds from day one. The audience seems to have a strong antenna about their choice and infer a lot from the publicity campaigns of a particular film. The film had a weak Friday and a Saturday which saw a drop instead of a rise in collections. The only saving grace were the Sunday collections which jumped by about 40% over its opening day figures. With an opening weekend of 57.2 crore, the film has not even managed to cross the mandatory 100 crore mark in its first week which is expected of any major star. The film ended its first week with 82.1 crore. It may just about manage to cross the 100 crore mark which still makes it a loser.

     

    The solo release of the week, One By Two is a rank bad film and faced the consequences for being so. Lacking any story worth telling and a coherent script backed by poor handling, it failed to attract even a small fraternity of Abhay Deol fans. At many screens, there was ‘No audience, no show’ status. The film collected 1.4 crore for its first weekend.

     

    Yaariyan, its mediocre content notwithstanding, has made its money. Having collected 32.05 crore in its first two weeks, the film has added another crore to its tally, taking its total to 33.05 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya has run out of steam by its third week. Adding just 80 lakh for its third week, the film’s three week take is 25.4 crore.

    MUMBAI: Jai Ho, having opened to a weak response, picks up for a day on Sunday to drop again today (Monday). The film’s opening at single screens was average while at multiplexes it was below average and showed improvement on Sunday only to find its level again as the new week began. The film has collected 57.2 crore for its opening weekend.

     

    Karle Pyar Karle has fared badly, barely managing to cross one crore mark in its first week.

     

    The other two releases, Paranthe Wali Gali and Miss Lovely are disastrously poor.

     

    Yaariyan will go down as a mini hit. The film maintained well in its second week with collections of 5.8 crore; the film’s two week total stands at 32.05 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya kept steady pace in its second week with figures of 6.3 crore but not enough to salvage the situation. The film’s two week tally stands at 24.6 crore.

     

    Sholay 3-D has collected one crore in its third week to take its three week total to 11.3 crore.

    MUMBAI: Karle Pyar Karle, a launch pad for Shiv Darshan, which afforded an ambitious release with about 1000 screens, has not been able to make any impact. A youth oriented action romance; it has failed to draw its target audience. The film opened to less than 10 per cent occupancy and has only tapered down thereafter.

     

    The other two releases – Miss Lovely and Parathe Wali Galli, failed to draw enough audience to conduct shows.

     

    Yaariyan scored on the strength of its music the mixed reactions of the viewers notwithstanding. The film has sailed to safe grounds with the first week collection figures of 26.25 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya, as one gathers from the viewers’ response, fell short of expectations; most preferred the earlier version. Having opened to a lukewarm response, the film maintained on the lower side to end its first week with figures of 18.3 crore.

     

    Sholay 3-D has added 2 crore in its second week thus taking its two week total to 10.3 crore.

     

    Dhoom 3 squeezes the  box office to its last potential collecting 4.75 crore in its fourth week taking its four week tally for the Hindi version to 272.49 crore; 285.24 crore including TnT versions.

     

    The exhibition trade is again looking forward to the Republic Day weekend release, Jai Ho, the latest Salman Khan offering for at least two weeks of throbbing box office. This time, the Khans seem to have chosen a subject with a social message. The film is based on the Chiranjeevi starrer Telugu film, Stalin (2006).

    MUMBAI: Music has saved the day for Yaariyan as the film, despite mixed reactions, has had a very good opening weekend collections. The film has managed to collect Rs 16.5 crore.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya opened slow but improved gradually on Saturday and Sunday but further improvement in collections will be needed to make the film a worthwhile investment. The sequel to Ishqiya has collected about Rs 11.3 crore in its opening weekend. The festival of Lohri today may affect collections for a day. 

     

    Mr Joe B. Carvalho is a poor film that meets with poor fate; the film ends its week one with a meager Rs 3.15 crore.

     

    Sholay 3-D collections dipped further during the week to end its first week with a figure of Rs 8.3 crore.

     

    Dhoom 3 continues to be on a record setting spree having added Rs 19.73 crore in its third week in its Hindi version and collecting another Rs 2.76 crore for the fourth weekend thus taking its total for Hindi to Rs 267.74 crore for 24 days and with the addition of TnT versions, the film has collected Rs 280.49 crore.

    ‘Dedh Ishqiya’: Not half as fun as Ishqiya

    MUMBAI: Here is another sequel, Dedh Ishqiya, following the 2010 film Ishqiya. The producers and the director remain the same and so do the protagonists, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. They continue to be petty thieves always on the run from a local don, Salman Shahid, and while dodging him; their greed leads them into another complication. The idea is interesting since the story involves a lot of plots, betrayals and backstabbing. The end could have been a shocker but seems to have been compromised in favour of pleasing the Indian moviegoer’s senses as well as to deliver the promise of one more sequel.

     

    Shah and Arshad have just stolen a costly necklace from a jeweller’s shop. Their ways of carrying out such heists being crude, they are caught in the act and the police are on their back. Shah uses the opportunity to ditch Arshad since the necklace is with him. A livid Arshad is desperately looking for him and while in action in a whorehouse, he learns the whereabouts of his partner-in-crime. He learns that Shah is headed for Mahmudabad to participate in a mushaira organised by the widow Begum of the province. The Begum, Madhuri Dixit, declares that her husband, the Nawab, was a poet and that is why, before he died he made her promise that she will marry again but to a poet. Hence, she has organised the mushaira so that she could anoint the winner as her husband and the Nawab of the province. Shah’s idea is to gatecrash into the contest, win it and become the Nawab and settle for life.

     

    Shah is at the venue, introduces himself as Nawab of another province and gives looks to Madhuri which make his intentions clear. As the mushaira opens, there are many contestants but Shah impresses. Also impressive is Vijay Raaz, a Nawab from across the river. He will be the villain of the piece for Shah since he has coveted Madhuri forever. Vijay is no poet by any stretch of imagination. What he has done is to kidnap and imprison a reputed poet named Italvi, Manoj Pahwa, who is forced to pen shairis which Vijay goes and mouths at the competition.

     

    It is day two of the contest and Vijay has excelled in his rendition. Shah chooses to opt for a song instead which will also help him express his feelings for Madhuri; by now, he is in love with her! There is a huge round of applause as he finishes the song, the gathering is unanimous in their appreciation but Shah’s joy vanishes as he spots Arshad eyeing him angrily from the crowd. Being inseparable as they are, both join forces again with a common goal, to clean up the Begum’s treasury. What follows is a three-way war of wits between the duo, Madhuri and her aide and confidante, Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz and his goons which is fun in parts.

     

    What a viewer misses in Dedh Ishqiya is a character like Vidya Balan in the earlier film. While the Shah- Arshad duo is street smart, Madhuri as the Begum with Adab is not a fitting counter. The other drawback is the villain played by Vijay Raaz, he just does not make the league and overacts; as it is mentioned in one of the scenes, he does not have the DNA for the character he plays. The dialogue is chaste Urdu, so much so that the film comes with English sub-titles! What was the need? The film could easily have had simple Urdu dialogue. It is not as if the characters—Shah and Arshad—are real nawabs.

     

    Abhishek Chaube’s direction is capable. Musically, while some songs may have pleasant tunes; the lyrics are not easy to catch. Cinematography is patchy. The ambience is convincing. Arshad is in his element in a tapori role once again. Shah is good as usual. Madhuri and Huma are okay. Manoj Pahwa, in a brief role, is good.

     

    Dedh Ishqiya has not had a good opening. The package has failed to create attraction for the compulsive early moviegoer which does not augur well for the coming days.

    ‘Yaariyan’: Music Saves the Day

     

    Yaariyan launches a few new artistes but mainly the film launches Divya Khosla Kumar, wife of T-Series head honcho, Bhushan Kumar, who makes her debut, writes the story, shares the credit for screenplay and, most of all, wields the megaphone. Even as the company has made numerous joint ventures or outsourced projects, with this film it introduces an in-house filmmaker.

     

    In keeping with the company’s profile, the film is planned as a musical, which caters to contemporary tastes and youth and hence is a film about college students. It provides all the scope to sing, dance, swing and romance. Finally, the ambience is provided by the picturesque locations of Shimla and South Africa. Thereafter, the story is a bit too far-fetched, twisting and turning as and when needed.

     

    This college is in Sikkim (that is where the story is based notwithstanding the location) where there are all kinds of students except Sikkimmis. The students, as in most such films, come to college as if to a park or a disco; they do everything but study. For most of the first half, the film has no purpose except some supposedly youthful pranks. There is a mandatory bitch, a witch, a plain Jane, a gay character and what have you to complete the clichéd character muster. Not all are relevant. All this makes first half of the film quite testing for the viewer.

     

    It is time something happened to push the film forward. So the story is finally inserted: This College with multiple facilities was set up by the local royal eons back. The royals have sold off many properties on the campus to an Australian prospect hunter. This deal includes the ladies hostel on the premises which is the biggest loss for the boys in the college! The only way these blocks on the property can be salvaged is by winning a bunch of competitions between the local students and their Australian counterparts. So the college guys and girls go on a trip to Australia which, like many such films from Dirty Dozen to Magnificent Seven, include specialists—a rock climber, a chess player, a racer, a rocker modelled on the Archies. As is the reputation pinned on all Indians by films, they get drunk all night, are not in senses the next day for a contest and lose. Also, given what we know of cricket, Australians are always known to play unfair and in the process, they not only cheat but also kill one of hero’s best friends.

     

    The team comes back with ashen faces but all is not lost. There is still a return match to be played on Indian soil. Back home, the hero, Himansh Kohli, chasing all kinds of girls, finally finds his true love in the plain Jane, Rakul Preet Singh, as the oiled-hair girl turns into the Thoroughly Modern Millie. The Indian flag flies high as the rivals are made to see practical Indian values.

     

    While the new actors are okay to passable, direction needs a lot of honing. The hero of the film is its music which has translated into good opening shows for the film which, with its reasonable price tag, should sail through to safety.

    MUMBAI: When Bhushan Kumar, son of T-series founder, late Gulshan Kumar, entered in the business, nobody was sure if he would be able to create the same musical magic that his father created. But it seems he is rising above his father’s shadow. After creating ripples with the melodious music of Aashiqui 2 earlier in the year, now even T-series’ second venture Yaariyaan seems to be getting a lot of attention, especially from the youngsters.

    One of the songs, Baarish from the film that was launched earlier this week already seems to be popular among the masses. Reports suggest that the song that features lead actors Himansh Kohli and Rakul Preet, has already got 1,138,752 hits in just four days. Despite a fresh cast, such an overwhelming response is really surprising.

     

    The film is being directed by Divya Khosla Kumar and is based on the life of college-going youngsters. It is scheduled to release on 10 January 2014.
