NBA players go head-to-head in first-ever ‘NBA 2K players tournament’

MUMBAI: National Basketball Association (NBA), and National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) announced the “NBA 2K Players Tournament,” an NBA 2K20 gameplay tournament between 16 current NBA players from 3 April on ESPN and ESPN2.

NBA players, including top seeds Kevin Durant of the Brooklyn Nets and Trae Young of the Atlanta Hawks, will compete in a single-elimination, player-only tournament on Xbox One.

The winner will be crowned the ultimate NBA 2K20 champion and select a charity beneficiary to receive a $100,000 donation from 2K, the NBA and the NBPA in support of ongoing coronavirus relief efforts.

“We're thrilled to partner with the NBA and NBPA to bring basketball back to fans throughout the world and to help those in need during these uncertain times,” said 2K senior vice president, sports strategy and licensing Jason Argent. “Entertainment, especially sports, has the ability to bring communities together – including athletes, fans and families – and we hope that everyone will enjoy the tournament.”

“We are excited to tip off the first ‘NBA 2K Players Tournament’ in partnership with the NBPA and 2K, continuing an ongoing effort to stay connected with NBA fans around the world, while also giving back in this time of need,” said NBA SVP of global partnerships Matt Holt.

“This tournament offers a unique opportunity for our players to compete with one another while also supporting their philanthropic efforts and engaging with their fans,” said THINK450 EVP of Licensing Josh Goodstadt, from the commercial arm of the NBPA. “We are excited to work with 2K and the NBA to bring this experience to life for the entire NBA community.”

Based on players’ seeding – which is determined first by NBA 2K rating, second by tenure – players will go head-to-head online in NBA 2K20. Prior to the tournament beginning, every player will choose eight of today’s NBA teams, each of which can only be used once. If a mirror match is set, the away team is awarded the first choice of team. Rounds one and two will be single elimination, with the semi-finals and finals running the best of three.

21st Century Fox brings popular shows to connected devices with FXNOW app

MUMBAI: It’s been some time that industry pundits predicted the rise and rise of the online viewing and now gradually it seems to be becoming a reality. Considering the growth potential of the sector, the Twenty-First Century Fox (FOXA_) has started the rollout of its “TV Everywhere” app – FXNOW that will bring ad-supported shows to multiple devices for subscribers to supported cable providers.

The app will have programs from FX, FXX and FXM, and will be available to about half of the pay-TV subscribers who receive the channels at home on devices including the iPhone, Android phones, and Xbox One. The app includes shows such as Archer, Chozen, Sons of Anarchy, Justified, Wilfred and The Americans. It will also include episodes of upcoming shows such as The Strain and Fargo.

The Los Angeles-based network made the announcement today. Viewers will also have an access to 45 to 60 movies a month besides the original programming.

Since the app is ad-supported, the company has an advantage as it would also generate revenues. The customers of AT&T’s U-verse, Comcast, Cablevision, and Suddenlink are among those that can access the service, while negotiations are still under way to add more Pay-TV operators.

As more and more international companies are realising the business potential of the online-viewing platform, hope the Indian companies come up with more streaming options soon.

  • Microsoft’s Xbox One aimed at greater linkage between PC and live TV

Microsoft’s Xbox One aimed at greater linkage between PC and live TV

NEW DELHI: Microsoft has created an extensive video walkthrough of the Xbox One dashboard, taking one through the general UI and how to access video games, apps and the new integration with live TV.

The 12-minute tour by Microsoft’s Marc Whitten and Yusuf Mehdi is a thorough and accurate representation of the general Xbox One user experience. The pair show what is available on the Home tab, as well as how to save favourite content in the Pins area over on the left-hand edge.

Visually, it does not look too different from the Xbox 360 but the customisation option and personalisation offered by the Xbox One appears impressive, says thewebnext.com. The dashboard will change automatically depending on who is signed in; the updated Kinect will identify who is in the room and then adjust the on-screen tiles and pins accordingly.

It does not matter which console is being used as all preferences will carry over as soon as one logs in with an Xbox Live account. If multiple players are logged-in simultaneously, one can also switch between custom dashboards using the phrase: “Show my stuff”.

App switching also looks snappy and responsive. Whitten calls out a series of oral commands to alternate between Hulu, Netflix, Internet Explorer and live TV, and the Xbox One appears to handle it all with only a minimal amount of lag.

The video walkthrough also shows how notifications will be presented over live TV. One can be completely removed from the dashboard experience, but the Xbox One will give an alert whenever Skype or multiplayer requests come through on the system.

Most of the focus and media coverage around the Xbox One has concerned its launch line-up, hardware specs and controversial DRM policies (all of which have now been reversed). As Microsoft ventures further into the casual market however, it’s increasingly important that the Xbox One offers an accessible, stress-free user experience. If owners are frustrated or confused by the new dashboard, the chances of them using their Xbox One as the default input for all of their games, streaming and live TV will be nil.
