    Hungama Music pulls plug, India’s streaming scene shrinks

    MUMBAI: Another one bites the dust in India’s cut-throat music streaming scene. Hungama Music is throwing in the towel, announcing its service will be switched off from 15 April, leaving users’ downloaded tunes and libraries gathering digital dust. This follows the premature demise of Resso and Wynk Music, making it a proper hat-trick of Indian streaming services hitting the skids in just over a year.

    “Downloaded music and library content will no longer be available,” Hungama Music informed its users.

    Resso, owned by ByteDance, blamed “local market conditions” for its January 2024 exit, while Wynk Music, owned by Bharti Airtel, effectively rolled its users into Apple Music after a strategic partnership. 

    Despite India’s booming streaming appetite – second only to the US in terms of sheer volume – local players are finding it a right pickle to compete with the global giants. YouTube, with its 462 million users, remains the undisputed king, while Spotify’s global clout and Apple Music’s strategic tie-ups are proving too much for many to handle.

    Hungama Music, which ditched its freemium model for a subscription-only approach last year, clearly couldn’t keep up. Even a recent partnership with Virgin Music Group, aimed at boosting Indian regional music, wasn’t enough to save it from the digital graveyard.

    “It’s a proper David versus Goliath situation,” a source close to the Indian music scene quipped. “These global behemoths have the cash and the clout to snap up users, leaving local players struggling to get a look-in.”

    With only Gaana and JioSaavn left standing, the question now is whether they can survive the onslaught. Can they whip up subscription packages that are both tempting and wallet-friendly enough to keep punters from straying? Or will they too end up singing the blues? One thing is for certain, the Indian music streaming scene is proving to be a proper dogfight.

    Bharti Airtel to shut down Wynk Music app: Report

    Mumbai: Bharti Airtel has decided to exit the music sector by shutting down its Wynk Music app according to media reports. Shortly after announcing a strategic partnership with Apple, the company will wind down Wynk Music over the next few months and integrate all current employees into other roles within the organisation.

    An Airtel spokesperson confirmed the closure, stating that Wynk Music will be discontinued in the coming months, and employees working on the app will be absorbed within the Airtel ecosystem.

    Since its launch in 2014, Wynk Music has built a significant user base with over 100 million subscribers. This move aligns with Airtel’s new focus on collaborating with Apple to enhance video and music streaming services. As part of this partnership, Airtel customers will have access to Apple Music, and Wynk Premium subscribers will receive special offers. Additionally, Apple TV+ will be accessible through Airtel’s Xstream service, further expanding its content offerings.

    With a diverse portfolio including Airtel Wynk, Airtel Thanks, and Xstream, Airtel serves more than 220 million active users and is aiming for continued growth in the competitive digital market.

    Mumbai: Music streaming app Wynk Music, continues to offer enthralling experiences to its users. Wynk Premium users now stand a never-before-exclusive chance to enter the world of the latest science fiction – Kalki 2898AD with a tour of the movie set.

Users can search for the songs on the Wynk app to avail of these features.

    The partnership also solidifies Wynk Music’s commitment to serve all audiences across all languages, beyond Hindi. The 4 south languages – Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam hold close to 30 per cent of the consumption of the app. In recent years, there has been a positive trend of songs from regional languages performing across India.

    All Wynk Premium users on the app will be eligible to participate in the Kalki contest. Wynk has been dedicated to not only providing top-tier musical experiences but also actively fostering closer bonds between fans and the artists they adore, allowing fans to explore opportunities to make their dreams come true, whether it’s meeting their favourite artist or engaging with their favourite movies.     The winners jammed with Ed on his chart-topper song ‘Afterglow’ in an exclusive never-before experience. The three winners for the contest were Keegan Farreira, Sai Kiran Kilaru and Ronitbunty Khetwani.     Wynk Rewind 2023 collates the top artists, albums, songs and playlists played on Wynk music over a particular year. Powered by an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm it draws out the music consumption patterns of users and offers Wynk users a personalised user experience on the app, delivering trends that offer a detailed view into listening patterns across total minutes streamed, favourite songs and artists, all of which can be shared across social media platforms.

    This year’s Rewind carries special features such as the musical zodiac, a receive activity badge based on fan consumption that helps fans get to know who they are superfans of.     Wynk Studio wins music distribution rights to Kay Kay Menon’s starrer “Love All”

    Mumbai: Wynk Music, India’s number one music streaming app by downloads and daily active users, has announced that Wynk Studio, India’s largest music distribution ecosystem, has won the distribution rights to Kay Kay Menon’s starrer “Love All”, a movie based on the life of badminton superstar, P Gopichand.

    “Love All” is produced by Mahesh Bhatt and P Gopichand along with Anand Pandit. It will be released by M Ramesh’s Laxmi Ganpathy Film Studios on 1 September. Directed by Sudhanshu Sharma, the movie also features Swastika Mukherjee, Robin Das, Shrishwara, Atul Srivastava and Raja Bundela. The movie has five memorable tracks, which are already available on Wynk.
