MUMBAI: ABAI one if India’s primary associations supporting the digital and creative arts sectors is organising Abai Fest 2013 at the University Grounds in Mysore on the 6 and 7 December 2013. This is going to be the first ever festival screening exclusive footage from all over the world in “animation and visual effects”.

“Computer Graphics has become part and parcel of International and local content creation in film and television. It provides the digital intermediation needed by filmmakers, directors and studios to mount bigger and bolder stories, themes and projects. Too little of how this is done has been exposed to the Indian public,” said ABAI & Country Head – Technicolor India president Biren Ghose.

Gravity, Superman, Man of Steel, World War Z, The Croods, Epic, Skyfall, Life of Pi and many other recent releases are testimony to the fact that computer graphics (CG) in digital production is now the new norm in filmmaking.

India is rapidly becoming a global hub for major VFX production and the domestic film industry is also adopting CG rapidly as a tool helping the director to go beyond the limits of the camera.

“Not enough awareness and screenings of animation and VFX takes place and we want to be a ‘melting pot’ venue for fun, discussion, participation and exclusively presenting content in this part of the world. Not much ‘animation’ is seen outside of the few cartoon channels,” said Ghose.

The festival would bring some of the world’s latest showcase featuring the best of what has been created in the recent past. Directors, producers and professionals will be at hand to present, meet, discuss and exhibit the state of the art.

“This will help open minds, hearts and doors in animation, gaming and visual effects (VFX). Come join us in experiencing the fun and festivity,” concluded Ghose.

  • Paramount bundling World War Z and Star Trek Into Darkness as double feature

Paramount bundling World War Z and Star Trek Into Darkness as double feature

MUMBAI: The studio plans to squeeze more life out of its undead hit and space sequel. Paramount and a clutch of exhibitors are going back to the future for a week with an old-fashioned double feature of summer tentpoles World War Z and Star Trek Into Darkness starting Friday.

The twin bill screens in 3D or 2D through 5 September in select AMC, Regal, Carmike, Marcus and other theaters for the price of a single ticket. It’s the second stunt playdates for Brad Pitt’s zombie flick – third if you count a late-add IMAX run – following its $50 “Mega Ticket” deal that included an advance screening, a home video copy of the film, 3D glasses, a poster and popcorn. With more than $526 million worldwide, WWZ is Pitt’s highest-grossing film ever. J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness has banked $458.7 million worldwide and spawned another sequel.

  • Brad Pitt & Paramount get the last laugh as ‘World War Z’ cracks $500 mn

Brad Pitt & Paramount get the last laugh as ‘World War Z’ cracks $500 mn

MUMBAI: Paramount Pictures reports that World War Z had passed the $500 million worldwide gross mark,

surpassing Troy’s $497.3 million to become Brad Pitt’s highest grossing film ever. One could argue that WWZ

received the benefit of a higher ticket price particularly because of its 3D numbers. But considering how badly

maligned this film was in the weeks before it bowed, hitting the half billion dollar plateau seems something to

brag about, even for a movie that cost in the $220 million range.

According to Paramount (which co-financed with Skydance), WWZ has set several records for Pitt, whose Plan B

produced. It set a personal best with a $66 million opening on 21 June, and a total of $197.4 million in US, both

of which exceeded Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s total domestic gross of $186.3 million and $50.3 million opening

weekend. The film has earned $305.2 million at the international box office, to date.

This pales in comparison to the numbers put up by Johnny Depp and his Alice in Wonderland and Pirates of the

Caribbean franchises, but Pitt has done a lot of cool movies that were never meant to be blockbusters, and this

was his most mainstream film since Troy and Mr. & Mrs. Smith. Passing the half billion dollar mark begs the

question of whether Pitt returns for an encore.

  • ‘World War Z‘ No 1 film globally this weekend grossing $100 million

‘World War Z‘ No 1 film globally this weekend grossing $100 million

MUMBAI: Brad Pitt‘s World War Z‘s global appeal continues, ranking as the No 1 film worldwide this weekend with a $100 million collection. The film has now earned $263 million at the world wide box office after 10 days in theatres.

From Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions, in association with Hemisphere Media Capital and GK Films, World War Z grossed an astounding $70.1 million at the international box office this weekend to bring the international cume to a rock solid $135.3 million. Domestically, the film earned $29.8 million in its second weekend, with a cume to date of $123.7 million.
The film has scored high among moviegoers, and with a strong word of the mouth for the movie the numbers are only showcasing an upward trend.

With approximately one-third of the international market still to release, the international roll-out of World War Z continues next week with France with additional territories, including Spain and Japan, opening later in the summer.

World War Z is directed by Marc Forster from a screenplay by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Drew Goddard & Damon Lindelof, and a screen story by Matthew Michael Carnahan and J. Michael Straczynski, based on the novel by Max Brooks and produced by Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Ian Bryce.

    Paramount rearranges releases

MUMBAI: Paramount has rearranged its release calendar. Through this move, the studio has preponed the release of the Tom Cruise starrer One Shot from February next year to 21 December this year.

As a result of the rearranging, the studio has postponed the release of the Brad Pitt zombie action film World War Z to 21 June, 2013. The film was earlier scheduled to release on the day when One Shot will now release.

Paramount vice chairman Rob Moore said it made perfect sense to reposition One Shot considering how well Ghost Protocol did. He also said One Shot, directed by Christopher McQuarie, will be done before World War Z.

Ghost Protocol grossed $688.8 milion worldwide and was a franchise best. It also helped to restore Cruise‘s star status in the U.S..

Based on Lee Child‘s best-selling book, One Shot is about an investigator drawn into the case of a former military sniper who is charged with killing five people.

Another major headline from the studio is that its Nickelodeon label is reviving the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film franchise that Jonathan Liebesman will direct that Michael Bay is producing.
