This Mother’s Day, Great Learning helps women reboot their career

New Delhi: In a bid to encourage mothers to re-start their careers and return to work, ed-tech company Great Learning has rolled out the second edition of the #HerFreshStart campaign, this Mother’s Day.

As a part of this initiative, the company will offer a scholarship of up to 50 per cent to selected mothers who can enroll in the choice of career-critical programs like data science, business analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, software engineering for data science, blockchain, IoT, management and digital marketing.

According to a report by KPMG, 58 per cent women feel less confident about returning to work post-pregnancy. The initiative aims to help such mothers on a career break by enabling them to regain confidence in their professional abilities through upskilling, said the company in a statement.

Great Learning is inviting people to nominate mothers in their circle to comment on their posts on LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with #HerFreshStart and tag Great Learning. The nominees can submit their form with a Statement of Purpose (SOP) with a brief introduction of their background and why they believe they deserve the scholarship. The nominations can be sent between 6 May and 10 May by visiting Great Learning’s social media channels – Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. Mothers can also self-nominate themselves.

“As a working mother myself, I am well versed with the challenges and responsibilities of wearing two hats. While motherhood is a journey, so is one’s career. At Great Learning, one of our many endeavors is to enable new moms to take charge of their career and continue to achieve greater heights professionally,” said Great Learning chief marketing officer Aparna Mahesh. “Through this campaign, we aim to do just that by providing an opportunity for mothers to resume their career by helping them hone their skills. Upskilling will enable mothers who are looking at re-starting their career as opportunities continue to open up in various fields.”

The first edition of the #HerFreshStart campaign was launched last year amidst the onset of the pandemic and received applications from over 200 mothers out of which five mothers were provided scholarships.

  • Get Wonderfully Strange this Women’s Week with Stranger & Sons

Get Wonderfully Strange this Women’s Week with Stranger & Sons

MUMBAI: Stranger & Sons is among the first gins to be made in India since Indian independence. The inception can be traced back to a warm night when the moon was shining bright and a strange idea sparked a mystical thought.  The moonlight showcased a strange creature, mythological yet beautiful. She was powerful and hid a secret, understood by only those who could interpret those enchanting words- or were they sounds? She was a stranger to some, but a welcome secret to the three seekers. Her two tails and three eyes unfurled a spell, to create a magical invention that you now enjoy as Stranger & Sons gin whether as a Strange gimlet or Gibson. Ethereal yet tangible, the result was so marvellous.

Going beyond the infamous juniper to highlight 9 Indian botanicals and spices that are indispensable to our kitchens, Stranger & Son’s is inherently Indian. The traditional “& sons” in the name applauds the inheritance by the three family members – Sakshi Saigal, Vidur Gupta and Rahul Mehra, where they pay homage to Indian businesses and traditions passed down from generation to generation.

Honouring the strange but mysterious creature’s persona this women’s week, the Stranger & Son’s family brings together stupendous bartenders from all around the world to mix up some creations that you definitely would love to describe as strange. We welcome SaiMai from the ABar, Marriott Marquis in Bangkok whose skills behind the bar will ensure your romance with gin never ends, June Baek from Madam Fan, JW Marriott Singapore who innovates with a style that cannot be replicated and makes the restaurant such a must visit while in Singapore, Celia Bugallo from Kwant, London who ensures that she delivers an exceptional experience each time and learns from each of her customers. These international bartenders  will supplement strong Indian talent namely  Cindy, from Mr Hoots, Delhi, one of India's leading female bartenders working at one of the most renowned cocktail bars in the country, Sarita Sharma from JW Marriott Sahara, who is one of the only woman bar professionals at JW Marriott Mumbai Sahar and is super enthusiastic and passionate of her craft & Feruzan Bilimoria ,Brand Ambassador – Stranger & Sons Gin, who has participated and excelled in multiple cocktail competitions and had an illustrious bartender career before representing the gin.

Giving these women a platform to do what they do best, Stranger & Sons, will use their Inherently Indian gin to deliver tasteful cocktails with an Indian soul. Sakshi Saigal, CEO, Stranger and Sons, is one of the few female entrepreneurs in the food and beverage space behind an alcohol brand.. Celebrating the occasion, she says “Commemorating International women’s day with women from the industry whether from the initial production stage to those who make the bars a success, we have curated this event to be wonderfully strange and Indian Inspired!  Keen to showcase India’s entrepreneurial side via a playful but interactive event, we would like to see the magic that these women can create with their own signature style and our precise recipe of inherently Indian gin”. So get set because “In a strange situation, no one is a stranger" and prepare to be amazed as these women prepare cocktails that tap on experiments gone absolutely right.

The Strange Gimlet tells a tale of the Gymkhana club in Delhi where a sari clad lady in her pearl necklace celebrated more than just India’s freedom or a Strange Gibson which was the epitome of perfection made by a man who had no time left to perfect his hunting skills. Inspired by these stories, these women will offer the best cocktails shaken, stirred and poured. That familiar dizzy feeling we get (from the impeccably balanced drink as well as their presence), that’s what the women bartenders promise to work with.

In a splendid opportunity to highlight the women’s community in our colourful nation, Stranger & Sons has curated events at Yauatcha, Soho House Mumbai & The Daily All Day, Mumbai in Mumbai to offer an experience like never before!

Yauatcha will host a bar takeover that would make the mystical creature proud of her discovery of the secret saree pocket. Handing over the bar to these accomplished bartenders and before launching a sparkling cocktail menu, Stranger and Sons will take patrons on a journey through Saimai’s, June’s and Sarita’s versions of the Gimlet and the Gibson along with their own signature cocktails. Summery, but inciting relevant and fond memories via the olfactory senses, these cocktails are a grand interpretation of mysticism tinged with poise.

Soho House Mumbai will see a fun and interactive experience with the brand via riddles that tantalise the brain. Solving clues and moving from secret room to room, members and guests will enjoy famous Stranger & Sons cocktails and clues. From a Strange G&T to Gimlets to exclusive Indian spirited cocktails, the entire experience is fashioned around a well-kept secret that warrants being unravelled.

The Daily All Day, Mumbai will host a brunch and bring everyone together for a common love of gin that makes our country so proud.

  • Naidu meets MIB women officers to establish empowerment, emancipation & equality within society

NEW DELHI: On a day when Women are taking centre-stage in every field. Information and Broadcasting Minister M.Venkaiah Naidu took time off to just meet the women officers in his Ministry to assure them that he appreciated the efforts made by them to mainstream the vision of Reform, Perform and Transform.

He said he was hopeful of political empowerment of women becoming a reality soon under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This is for the first time that such an interface with women personnel was organized on the occasion of International Women’s Day by the Ministry. Women staff from all sections and ranks participated in the interaction with Naidu.

The Minister also interacted with the staff on their experiences in working in the Ministry.

On the issue of reservation for women, Naidu said a strong political will and change in mind sets were critical elements in addressing the larger issues related to women. It was also critical to firmly establish the 3Es – Women Empowerment, Emancipation and Equality – within the institutional framework of society and this should be facilitated by all stakeholders.

Naidu said it was time to celebrate all the women in our lives – our Mothers, Sisters, Daughters and Wives. Each and every woman is gentle, caring and kind. He said that woman is synonymous to perfection, hard work, efficient, multi- tasker and compassion that have made this world more humane. It was imperative that we must appreciate and respect their beautiful hearts. He urged all to acknowledge and celebrate all the things they have achieved. Although Women’s Day was celebrated today, but Celebrating women and girl child should be an everyday ritual.

He said women who are referred to as the ‘better half’ in a relation were actually the ‘best half’ in any relation. They have always been Friend, Philosopher and Guide in each and every aspect of life. Mentioning the importance of woman in our lives, the Minister also quoted Brigham Young that, “You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation”.

  • Saluting India’s TV women

Women in media. Women in banking.

When you think of it, there are more women holding- or have held – powerful positions in banks today, then there are those holding them in media and entertainment companies.

Arundhati Bhattacharya chairs India’s largest bank – the State Bank of India. Chanda Kochchar occupies the corner office as CEO and managing director of ICICI Bank. Shikha Sharma sits atop in the CEO’s seat at Axis Bank. There are other names too whose names have been perched above the C office including Usha Ananthasubramanian (Punjab National Bank), Naina Lal Kidwai (HSBC), Kaku Nakhate (Bank of America Merrill Lynch) and Shubhalakshmi Panse (Allahabad Bank).  And there are scores of other unnamed women who run other banks, branches and finance companies. They collectively oversee money running into lakhs of crore.

Banks and the finance sector encourage diversity a lot more than India’s entertainment and media firmament, or so it appears.

Go down over the years and one has to really dig deep to name women who have been appointed in positions of power leading the business of media and entertainment companies in India. Some of the names that come to mind are Ravina Raj Kohli who helped Kerry Packer set up Channel 9 in early 2000. Monica Tata who oversaw HBO in India and now heads a business channel. Swati Mohan who is the business head of Fox Networks Group and National Geographic India. BBC south Asia & south east Asia senior vice-presidet & general manager Myleeta Aga Williams. Then there is Supriya Sahu who currently leads India’s pubcaster Doordarshan.

The major broadcast networks across the country are led by men: Uday Shankar, Punit Goenka, Sudhanshu vats, and NP Singh.

And women who have got the topmost position in broadcasting have achieved it by virtue of being promoters. India TV has Rajat Sharma’s wife Ritu who keeps the business in order while her husband handles editorial. Kaveri Kalanithi  is executive director of Sun TV of which her husband Kalanithi is executive chairman. Anurradha Prasad promoted the BAG group and leads the radio and TV network. Ritu Kapur and Vandana Mallick of course held powerful leadership positions at Network18 group before its was sold to Mukesh Ambani

The broadcast and digital sectors have their  share of women who have the responsibility of either heading programming, ad sales, marketing or channel clusters. Examples are Manisha Sharma and Simran Hoon at Colors, Nina Jaipuria at Nick, Kavitha Jaubin at Sun TV, Sharda Sundar and Sunita Uchchil at Zee TV, Gayatri Yadav at Star India, and Swati Shetty at Netflix are some of the names that immediately come to mind.

It is on the TV production front that women have made a stellar mark. Ekta and Shobha Kapoor, Rashmi Sharma who heads a production house that bears her name, Raadhika who promoted Radaan Television down south, Fazilla Allana and Kamna Menezes of SOL Productions, Benaifer Kohli,  Anita Kaul Basu, Comall Wadhwa or Bhairavi Raichuria are some of the ladies who have produced content which has earned them a reputation and their broadcast networks hundreds of crores.

Then of course women have become iconic on television shows – soaps, drama, factual and non-fiction, and news. The number of female characters on TV which are unforgettable far outnumber the men. For every Kapil Sharma or a Daya there are many more Tulsis, Parvatis, Ballika Vadhus, Priya Ram Kapoors or  Naagins.

On the news front,  Barkha Dutt, Shereen Bhan, Sweta Singh, Anjana Om Kashyap, Nidhi Razdan, Ayesha Faridi, Nidhi Kulpati, Nidhi Razda, Sagarika Ghose among scores of others have stood out. There was a time when India’s Doordarshan news ladies were the nation’s connect to developments. Remember the eighties and nineties?

Going forward with the world of digital exploding and television continuing to go from strength to strength, more and more opportunities will crop up. And India’s talented women will embrace them.

(The list of women executives mentioned here is just representative of those working in television and is illustrative. There are many more women working in television whose names could have been mentioned. And the editorial team at indiantelevision.com would like to see more women running television and digital businesses. As is the case with banks where women are business leaders.)

Cricketers Star in ‘Nayi Soch’ ODI jerseys

MUMBAI: Star India, in association with the BCCI, has turned the spotlight on women once again with their new campaign. Called “Nayi Soch,” the campaign sees Indian cricketers wearing their mother’s names on their jerseys. It has struck a deep chord with all sections of society making several wonder and hope if the team would wear their mother’s names on their jerseys for an actual match.

To make a powerful statement, the Indian Cricket team will sport jerseys with their mother’s names on 29 October for the concluding ODI of the India-New Zealand series.

This gesture will champion the cause of women in a country which is ranked 130th out of 155 nations in the world on gender equality (United Nations Human Development Report 2015). On this game day, the Indian cricket team will serve as ambassadors of new thinking and use the power and platform of sport to drive meaningful social change.

“This is the first time in the world that a team jersey is being used so disruptively to power social change. Star Plus has taken an unprecedented leap in its Nayi Soch or new way of thinking. We compliment the BCCI and the Indian team for such a transformational collaboration,” said Star India chairman and CEO Uday Shankar.

Shankar further added, “At Star, women have always been at the forefront of everything we do. This time around both BCCI and Star have put their strength together to highlight the cause of women in India. World over Sports has been a tremendous platform for advocacy of a range of social causes. The Indian cricketers sporting their mothers’ names make for a powerful and emotive statement and we are thankful to BCCI and the Indian Cricket team for partnering with us on this idea. It will support the voice of the emerging Indian woman and inspire millions to acknowledge and celebrate the identity and role of women in India.”

The enormous popularity of the Indian cricket team and the fact that our cricketers serve as role models gives Team India the power for social change. Tapping into this capacity and marrying it with the high impact of television, the symbolic gesture of cricketers wearing their mothers’ names is sure to make the people of India sit up and challenge stereotypes that continue to hold back women today.

BCCI president Lt. Anurag Thakur added, “Time and again women have proved their mettle and history has been the witness of their greatness. Once a woman becomes a mother, her entire life gets dedicated towards her children. She plays an equally or rather greater role in shaping the future of her children. With this initiative in collaboration with Star India – ‘Nayi Soch’, our endeavor is to honor each and every woman. The Indian team will be sporting their mother’s name on the jerseys for the fifth ODI against New Zealand with intent to thank all the mothers for their efforts and sacrifices.”
