  • India’s first global news network WION spreads its wings

India’s first global news network WION spreads its wings

From small steps within South Asia, World Is One News (WION), the first global English news network from India, is now taking giant strides across the world.  It has been 1 year since its first telecast and already, Indian viewers are rivetted by the country’s first truly international news channel. Particularly appealing is the fact that for the first time, Indian viewers can enjoy in-depth coverage of stories from far-flung corners of the world through a perspective and prism of their choice.

WION has now entered the Middle East. The channel has been launched on Etisalat – one of the biggest networks in the Middle East – in the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.  Viewers in those countries can also watch WION on Du & Ooredoo.  WION’s Middle East debut comes on the heels of its launch in seven African countries: Nigeria, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Botswana & Rwanda. WION is now one of India’s fastest-growing news networks. Come the months February to April, WION will be spreading its outreach to other South Asian countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

Celebrating 25 years of ZEE in Dubai, Rajya Sabha MP Subhash Chandra said, “After a successful start in India, WION is gearing up to bring world-class journalism to the people of UAE & Qatar who have long been waiting for a global network from India.”

Australians, too are enjoying shows by WION. The channel has been launched on Yupp TV there while talks are underway to launch it on other platforms in Australia & New Zealand too. WION is keeping its promise of providing in-depth and non-biased coverage of global stories, a space so far dominated by the western media.

  • Hollywood with Sarah Idan

    Hollywood with Sarah Idan

WION is introducing an entertainment television series that will be hosted by Miss Iraq 2017, Sarah Idan, from the city of Los Angeles. Starting February 2, 2018, ‘Hollywood with Sarah Idan’ promises to bring viewers upto speed with all the happenings in Hollywood. The television series will feature the biggest film releases, celebrity news, interviews with Hollywood bigwigs, the latest music albums,  highlights from Award shows as well as the red carpet. In a nutshell, the show will bring to you everything that you need and want to know about Hollywood.

Sarah Idan became the first Miss Iraq to participate in a Miss Universe contest after a gap of 45 years. The 27-year-old is the second Iraqi woman in history to represent her country at an international pageant, a fact that brought  her a lot of public and media attention worldwide.  She grew up in Baghdad and started working for the United States Army as a linguist when she was only 18 years old – this ultimately granted her the opportunity to travel the US and earn her degree in Music in Los Angeles. She’s a recognised musician in the Middle East and known for her Music in an Egyptian film.

Sarah’s fearless personality and penchant for speaking her mind have made her quite popular among those who aim to break cultural limitations and bring about a positive change in the society. She received death threats for taking a selfie with her Israeli counterpart, Adar Gandelsman. The controversy first arose on Nov 13, 2017 when she posted a selfie with Miss Israel with the caption ‘Peace and Love from Miss Iraq and Miss Israel’. It backfired in ways that she could not have imagined. Having a dual citizenship in the United States helped her escape prosecution in Iraq.

Now based in LA, she will be hosting ‘Hollywood with Sarah Idan’ exclusively  on WION.  She is excited to team up with the international news channel  for this television series as it combines her passion for Movies, Music, Arts and Public Communications.

  • News is not about cacophony and stirring controversies: ZMCL’s Rajiv Singh

News is not about cacophony and stirring controversies: ZMCL’s Rajiv Singh

The Zee Group has completed a quarter of a century of its existence in India. Not only has it spread its wing far beyond television, since its first product launched was the channel Zee TV, but has tapped into almost all categories in the broadcast space. With a solid presence in entertainment and news already, the last puzzle was fixed when it dived into the tough waters of English news space.

World is One News (WION) was first aired on 15 August 2016. Independence Day was the perfect occasion to launch India’s first global English news channel with a south Asian tinge. Ex-editor in chief Rohit Gandhi announced during the launch that the channel would meet the aspirations of two billion south Asians by delivering a global news network reflecting a south Asian world perspective, which has been missing.

The channel was to be a destination for not just news but also some lifestyle, human stories, animals, food and environment related information. Its target is to capture the upcoming tech-savvy and visual Gen Z, the earliest of whom are just venturing into the corporate world.

Indiantelevision.com’s Santosh Jangid got talking with Zee Media Corp’s group COO Rajiv Singh where he opens up about the ‘year old baby’ WION for the first time. Excerpts:

How has the journey been for ZMCL?

From then to now, we’ve established 13 channels with 220 million viewers. We are largest television news network in Hindi speaking markets. Television is core to our business and the last 25 years have helped us to become a large content media conglomerate. The future looks extremely bright, as we have built a strong efficiency over the years.

Enlighten us about WION and its progress.

When we entered the English news segment, we clearly knew that there is hardly an international player. India is a global economy and anything and everything that India does impacts the globe. We wanted to give global Indians a global voice and India never had that. WION complements our existing footprint in 171 countries and so we know we can quickly ramp up this business to scale new heights and make India stand out globally. We started that journey by giving the channel a very global look and feel. We have built it up as an aspirational channel and we are not interested in the number one game in India. We want to create a channel that is a content differentiator. WION is just a year old but it has managed to carve a niche for itself.

What is your distribution strategy for the channel?

WION has established a distribution centre in South Africa and shortly we will be transcending into new global corridors. Zee Media is already available in nine languages on GEC. How much time does it take to enter those markets by just tweaking the content and making WION relevant to every Indian!

What makes WION a disruptor among the existing channels?

WION stands for World Is One News which implies what affects the world, affects us all. We believe that news dissemination is not about cacophony and stirring controversies around breaking news. It is about building in-depth content, analysis and about investing a lot in curating and building content and for that, one needs to have international investments and international bureaus. WION has expanded to around 20 countries by expanding our international bureaus. It is one of the rare few channels to be operating out of a full bureau in Pakistan and a full-fledged office in London and the US, and a correspondent in Beijing. Soon WION will crossover from an Asian to a global channel.

What is the local to international skew? What kind of news do you cover?

WION has international content aired from 6 pm to 12 am. The channel has 60 per cent international content and 40 per cent Indian content that is internationally relevant. We do chase Indian relevant stories and as they say, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do.’ W show Indian content with a global tinge and ‘international’ as a word is misinterpreted. BBC in the UK and Al Jazeera in the Middle East are international channels but that doesn’t mean they don’t show what happens in their region and home territory.

It is a niche market that the channel operates in. What have been some of the major challenges for you?

It has been a challenging uphill climb but the channel has been accepted by discerning viewers. WION is available across all cable households in India. Although we have received some feedback that wasn’t very encouraging where viewers didn’t like the content or the overall channel, we take them as constructive feedback and insights and we are willing to improve that to make the content relevant to our customers.

Where does most of your viewership coming from?

Majority of our viewership largely comes from six metros but a large part of it also comes from foreigners residing in India as they are able to correlate with the channel effectively. The channel has a premium audience.

How will you ramp up your distribution strategy?

We are working towards building a global distribution network. We are in talks with The US to start global distribution. We will also make relevant content for markets like The Middle East, United Kingdom, United States and Canada. We will have more global networks next year added to our kitty of distribution.

What target have you set for next year?

We want to make the channel independently stand out in English news genre, add more distribution networks, and have more bureaus.

When can we see the rollout of your OTT platform?

We will have our platform very soon that will take the feed from the television channel and mirror that on OTT.

  • Veteran journo Rohit Gandhi sets up news platform for independent reporters

Veteran journo Rohit Gandhi sets up news platform for independent reporters

MUMBAI: When you have the credentials of having worked for CNN and CBC as an international journalist for several years, what do you do next? Well, you could start a news platform with a difference. Just like Rohit Gandhi has done by incorporating Global Live, which has set up Democracy News Live.

The network is owned by Gandhi and Vrinda Aggarwal, who was working with him in WION.

Says Gandhi who has designated himself as editor in chief, “Journalism channels have become partisan with political parties and are already sold to ideologies. It is difficult for an honest centre of the line editor to operate. Judges of courts are being questioned for their leanings. The environment is ripe to democratise journalism a bit more.”

His model, that of democratisation of news, is to allow hard working field reporters who make the news to become owners of a news platform. “They can publish the content and own it for life,” says Gandhi. “We even have a monetisation model in place.”

For now, the duo has invested about $400,000 and once it hits a certain benchmark, they will seek the second funding round.

Of course not anyone will be able to post news content. They will have to get past credentials and identification verification before getting the green signal to post their news videos, articles and pictures. A robust content management system and video platform will allow hacks to edit video on the cloud without having editing skillsets that FCP or Premier Pro require. Of course anyone violating journalistic ethics or resorting to plagiarism or fake news will get booted out of the news platform without any warning.

Artificial intelligence which has been built into the technology backend will make managing, search, and discovery so much easier for both journos and visitors.

A team of 23 tech specialists and editors have been at it, building the backend and CMS since 1 February 2017 when Gandhi left the Essel Group owned Indian English news channel WION to start his venture.  He says he consciously stayed away from corporate or political funding, instead choosing to attract investment from a group of 20 private investors.

He explains: “The whole idea is to make sure that we don’t have influence of either a corporation or a political party. The professionals – from technology and journalism who came together to forge this alliance –  found the idea so potent, that they not only invested but also helped in building the platform.”

Over the past few months, Democracy News Live has been building news content on its Youtube channel, though not much of it had been put out at the time of writing. It has set up a news studio in New Delhi and has even put reporters through training and the paces of anchoring.

And while Gandhi agrees television remains the best medium for disseminating news and information even today thanks to the wide distribution infrastructure that’s available, he still preferred to go online for a few reasons.

He elaborates: “While I am not against a news channel, I wanted to start out by putting out phenomenal content online. Then only after that do I want to think about going in for a linear feed when it reaches an inflection point. Our content could go out on radio, TV, online and even on 4K as it is being shot even on that format. With that kind of quality it can even and up on television.”

Gandhi is not worried about the business model as he believes advertisers follow audiences who follow great content. However, he cautions that he is not going to base the news content on Democracy News Live on advertisers’ needs. “We will have advertisers in due course,” he says. “But our editorial integrity and independence will be maintained.”

The Android and iOS app launches are planned for the coming week. They will have logins for reporters to file their stories and for readers to read.

Gandhi is planning to market the platform through the co-owners who will work with them.

He has the credentials to match his vision for Democracy News Live. At WION he was editor in chief and he left it after just a year of helping build it up from ground up. And in 2006, he was the reporter who broke the story about the terrorist group that was behind the 2006 Mumbai train bombings. Those will be put to the test as Democracy News Live begins to gain traction.

  • Third Zee channel WION to be aired on Africa’s Kwesé

MUMBAI: Zee Africa has announced the launch of its global English news channel WION on Kwesé TV, Africa’s pay–TV network.

This will be the third channel from the Zee stable on the Kwesé platform which already hosts Bollymovies on channel 155 and Zee Bollynova on channel 150, added in January 2017.

WION will premiere to the African audience in Kwesé TV’s current satellite markets on channel 731, and will reach viewers in Ghana, Rwanda, Zambia, and Lesotho through its multi-platform broadcast offering which includes Kwesé mobile app, linear TV, and web streaming services.

With WION, Zee Africa CEO Harish Goyal said, they had committed to deliver to the African viewers, authentic information and a local perspective to what was happening in the world. Econet Media CEO Joseph Hundah concluded that the addition of WION to its line-up added further diversity to its bouquet.

WION, with its head office in Delhi and bureaus in 37 global locations, has multi-cultural staff adding local perspective to every global story.

WION is the first India-based network to have its presence in regions such as the U.S., the UK, Russia, China, and Africa making it South Asia’s first convergent, multi-media English news network

  • Sudhir Chaudhary elevated as editor-in-chief of Zee News, Zee Business, WION & DNA

MUMBAI: Is it merit, Hobson’s choice, or simply loyalty? Operating on the growth path and to strengthen its leadership team, Zee Business, an arm of Zee Media Corporation, has elevated Sudhir Chaudhary to the editor-in-chief position for Zee News, Zee Business, WION and DNA.

He will report to Zee Media group COO Rajiv Singh. Respective editorial teams will report to Chaudhary who seems to be gaining prominence faster than normal course.

After the exit of Amish Devgan, the channel was looked after by Samir Ahluwalia, who was appointed as the editor for Zee Business in May 2016 and deputy editor Mihir Bhatt.

Accused in Rs 100-crore extortion case against industrialist Naveen Jindal, Ahluwalia called it a day in Zee Media in September 2016. Several rumours had surfaced about Bhatt being elevated to the role of the channel head but he now seems to be losing favour with the senior management. The search for Zee Business’ head continued since, until this development.

Asheet Kunal has been given the interim charge of India 24×7 editor surpassing Vasindra Mishra, who earlier served as the editor of Zee Media’s national Hindi news channel. Kunal will continue reporting to Jagdeesh Chandra. The group has re-designated Mishra as the political editor for regional channels and will report to Chandra.

Chandra was recently appointed as the executive director of Zee Media’ regional news channels. He also takes care of Essel Group’s newspaper DNA as the CEO.

MUMBAI: Computing and creative technologies aid workflow, storage and infrastructure solutions for all aspects of the media and content creation industry. IT solutions providers help with latest computing, networking, media hardware and software to provide the best output.

Specialised companies bring extensive product knowledge and world-class engineering to industry. Installation of video servers enables content producers and journalists to upload content from the field directly to the broadcaster’s customised Content Management System (CMS), an action that automatically creates planning events.

Dalet Digital Media System recently announced that the youngest venture of Zee Media Corporation World Is One News (WION) has utilised Dalet Unified News Operations. Dalet solution is powering and supporting the international news channel with comprehensive media logistics, newsroom computer system and news production workflow facilitated by the Dalet Galaxy Media Asset Management (MAM) and orchestration platform, with full ingest and playout operations relying on Dalet Brio video servers.

WION delivers news coverage from across the globe with a South Asian perspective to the international audience across the web, mobile devices and TV. Operated by Zee with headquarters in India and bureaux in 37 global locations, WION is the first India-based network to have a presence in the U.K., U.S., China, Russia and Africa, making it south Asia’s first truly convergent, multi-media English news network.

A critical aspect of the installation for WION was to enable journalists and producers to upload content from the field directly to the broadcaster’s customized Content Management System (CMS), an action that automatically creates planning events thanks to the Dalet Unified News Operations collaborative workflow.

“Our philosophy of ‘being one with the world’ holds that news is the common thread that binds us all together and makes critical the ability to deliver news in the moment, from anywhere to any channel,” says WION editor-in-chief Rohit Gandhi. “We sought and found a partner in Dalet to provide the backbone to our network-wide news infrastructure. The solution not only accelerates time to air but enables better collaboration with a highly efficient and agile set of tools, from remote content creation to centralized content curation and onwards to publication on the digital and TV platforms our audiences are choosing.”

WION is the first broadcaster in India to deploy the Dalet Galaxy-based Unified News Operations workflow.

Easy-to-use production tools via web-based Dalet WebSpace and relevant story content are readily available to every user in the newsroom and in the field. When WION journalists receive a notification about an assignment, they can search, browse and access every asset in the Dalet platform from their desktop, laptop or mobile device, whether it is news wires and footage that just came in, or existing stories and video packages. Beyond the walls of the newsroom, WION journalists use the Dalet On-the-Go mobile app to check assignments and create packages, exporting content to the CMS, as well as to YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. Video and scripts can be logged and edited within Dalet OneCut, or sent to Adobe Premiere via Dalet Xtend for craft editing. Media and associated metadata are tracked and managed by Dalet Galaxy every step of the way, including playlist export and import to and from the CMS. Once approved by a producer, final content is readily available for use in the built-in production control room automation and exported to the CMS as a multimedia story object.

Beyond the comprehensive set of tools and services natively built into Dalet Galaxy, the advanced web-services API integrates and unifies the full ecosystem of technologies and in-house tools used at Zee WION, including the custom CMS based on Kentico that drives workflows within the Dalet solution. Other integrations include WINBDL teleprompter, WASP graphics system and Quantum SNFS with NetApp E series storage.

“This installation is a perfect example of the Dalet Unified News Operations solution. Having the NRCS, the production tools and the archives fully integrated, along with a flexible workflow engine and web-services API, enables WION to truly implement a ‘digital first’ approach to deliver the right content, on the right device, to the right audience, ahead of the competition,” says Dalet Asia Pacific general manager Raoul Cospen. “Deployed in record time, the end-to-end workflow was on air within a few short weeks of signing the contract for Dalet Unified News Operations.”

WION launch now formal; lists marquee shows

MUMBAI: After its soft launch in August this year, Zee Media Corporation Limited (ZMCL) English News Network, WION – World is One News has now been formally launched. Its formal launch with is followed by rolling out of a major marketing campaign aptly titled WION – Be One With the World.

The editorial team consists of experienced journalists, researchers and analysts with global exposure. With bureaus in 37 global locations, WION has international reach and multi-cultural staff adding local perspective to every global news story. WION is the first India based network to have its presence in regions like UK, USA, China, Russia and Africa making it South Asia’s first truly convergent, multi-media English News Network.

“A revolutionary product from the Zee Media stable, WION represents a sophisticated transition from the usual ‘Breaking News’ phenomenon. WION brings exclusive and insightful content that often escapes popular media. Targeting upscale viewers in India as well as the Indian diaspora, our endeavour is to showcase content that truly represents the spirit of South Asia with focus on India. Embracing our philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – The World is My Family’, through WION we believe that news will be the common thread that binds us all together,” said ZMCL executive director and COO Rajiv Singh.

The multi-city campaign will take off across various platforms including television, print, Rradio, OOH, DTH and digital. Leveraging the network strength, WION will further amplify its launch through a roadblock on more than 40 channels of ZEEL and ZMCL on 9 December. Phase I of the marketing campaign will focus on the India market, and it will gradually extend to other markets across the world in Phase II.

WION is a global news network that brings news from around the world but with a South Asian view. The goal of the channel is to engage and empower viewers through balanced and extraordinary storytelling. The channel aims to explore and understand the stake of South Asian region in world affairs by pushing the boundaries of innovation on digital, mobile and television platforms.

WION editor-in-chief Rohit Gandhi added, “In an increasingly divided and violent world, the content at WION is carefully curated keeping in mind the sensitivities of all regional identities. While the news genre already has different filters – American, British and Middle-East, there is no South Asian lens that helps the world understand the South Asian perspective on world affairs; WION aims to bridge this gap. WION targets a generation that is global, social, value-oriented, visual and technologically savvy. We tell stories relevant to a wider global audience and to the millennial generation that consumes news on the go. The news at WION is easy to consume without sacrificing in-depth analysis of issues.”

Gandhi further added: “While neutrality is journalism’s prime directive, and nothing comes between that, our TV and web platforms do have separate places set aside to foster positivity and inspiration culled from real life. WION Edge and Konversation are online series for sharing positive stories of people from India and around the world. On TV, whether it’s the on-location reporter, our anchors or guests, the conversation is always calm and orderly, with everyone given a chance to speak.”

WION offers an experience that is beyond news. It has a variety of content appealing to both younger and mature audience. WION will not only offer news, but also general entertainment content covering genres like lifestyle, human stories, animals, food, environment and fashion among others.

The presentation of content is innovative with use of visuals, timelines, graphics, on-ground live coverages, 360-degree interactive videos, flying drones and story app. The channel has interactive content to encourage participation from the viewer’s end. A big focus of the platform is on user generated content through its Citizen-Journalism App.
