Echoes of Earth festival illuminates Delhi’s ecosystem with conservation focus

Mumbai: Delhi’s iconic Auro Kitchen Bar recently came alive with the award-winning ‘Echoes of Earth’ music festival, held this Friday, November 15th. The event celebrated the city’s rich biodiversity and showcased the evolving ecosystems of Delhi throughout the changing seasons.

The evening kicked off with a thought-provoking panel discussion hosted by ‘WWF-India’, the festival’s conservation knowledge partner. The discussion explored the critical role of trees in urban ecosystems and highlighted the seasonal changes trees undergo. Experts shared insights into nurturing and protecting trees, emphasising their beauty and ecological significance for future generations.

The panel featured distinguished speakers, including Neha Sinha, conservation biologist and Head of Conservation Partnerships at ‘WWF-India’, and Anita Mani, author and publisher at ‘Indian Pitta Books’. Vijay Dhasmana, eco-restoration and rewilding practitioner, moderated the engaging session.

Mani highlighted the importance of reviving habitats for endangered species, stating, “Nostalgic questions such as ‘where have the sparrows gone’ are ironic, as we have relentlessly removed their habitats with our hedge-less manicured gardens and glass-fronted buildings that lack the niches and corners they need for nesting. If we revive their habitats, they will return.”

Sinha followed up, adding, “There used to be a certain Delhi aesthetic. A house with a garden and a creeper on the side of the building. That sustained ants and birds and small animals. Today we have blocks of flats and plastic grass. It’s still not too late to convert each garden, verandah and terrace into a refuge for wildlife. Plant native – pipal semal and banyan trees, vajradanti and madhabi lata plants. Reduce chemical use. Let’s have tens of thousands of native gardens in each city, creating a corridor for butterflies, birds, and wild animals.”

Vijay Dhasmana concluded, saying, “Rewilding is gaining momentum, and there is growing awareness about recreating habitats. In our landscapes, native plants play a vital role in establishing such habitats. These native species are highly resilient and remarkably tolerant, offering hope in the face of changing climatic conditions. Delhi is home to more than 235 tree species, making it one of the greenest capitals in the world.”

Conservationist Benhail Antao, best known for hosting National Geographic’s ‘Snakes SOS: Goa’s Wildest’, led an interactive session on coexisting with wildlife. Antao, who has extensive experience rescuing animals, especially snakes, educated attendees on the behaviours and roles of often-misunderstood species in urban settings. He emphasised the importance of empathy in fostering harmonious coexistence with wildlife.

Antao remarked, “We cannot thrive alone as a species; our survival depends on coexisting with all life around us. To coexist, we must empathise—yet empathy cannot flourish where fear reigns. And fear is born from ignorance and misinformation.”

The evening then transitioned into a musical celebration. Zenguin’s soulful melodies provided a serene backdrop, captivating the audience as the night unfolded. The festival reached its zenith with a stunning performance by Vieux Farka Touré, the “Hendrix of the Sahara.” Touré, known for blending traditional African rhythms with jazz and blues, delivered an unforgettable performance, leaving the crowd mesmerised.

Echoes of Earth’s 7th edition continues to champion the intersection of art and activism. By drawing attention to the vital importance of local ecosystems and global conservation efforts, the festival serves as a platform to ignite conversations and inspire action toward environmental preservation. Through its dynamic programming, Echoes of Earth hopes to foster a worldwide community of advocates dedicated to protecting the planet’s future.

We could not have found a better platform for us to showcase our film in which we have tried to bring to the screen the wondrous wildlife of Karnataka.”

Noted celebrities coming together for a special cause: –

Lending his voice to the film in Hindi, the Indian Actor Rajkummar Rao said, “As an actor you’re always looking for interesting stories to tell. However, to be able to narrate the story of our country’s wildlife was an extremely enriching experience for me. Discovery has always been my go to channel whenever I’ve wanted to explore something new. Now to be a part of the channel through a film that so beautifully portrays the natural heritage of our country, it is definitely a proud moment for me. Wild Karnataka celebrates the spectacular diversity of the Indian state, Karnataka and brings us closer to the wildlife that thrives in the state. It serves as a good reminder for all of us to truly celebrate our country’s rich natural treasures and work towards preserving them for generations to come.”

Actor Prakash Raj has lent his voice for the Tamil and Telugu version of the film. He said, “I connect with the ethos of the show – celebrating the rich bio-diversity that is prevalent in India. The magnitude of this wild based magnum opus can be gauged from the fact that this hour-long documentary is sieved from four hundred hours of shot footage. To use one’s craft for raising awareness about the beauty and the diversity of our natural heritage is a beautiful thing and now it is up to us, the viewers and the citizens of India to not only celebrate this beauty but also work towards taking care of it.”

“This film, Wild Karnataka, is close to my heart as I am from Karnataka and I feel grateful to be a part of this project for Discovery India. Lending my voice to the film in a way helps bring it closer to the people of Karnataka so they can witness the beautiful wildlife that thrives in this state, with a personal touch. It is extremely important for us to save our wildlife and the government and Forest Department of Karnataka are taking great efforts despite the pressures of development and vast human populations. It is time we learn more about this and understand how we can be a part of the solution,” said actor Rishab Shetty, who has dubbed for the film in Kannada.

Karnataka is the home to some of the richest wild places on the planet and boasts of a rich biodiversity, most of which is still unknown to the public. Interestingly, one quarter of India’s plant and animal species are found here, many of which are still unknown to the people of India. The film appreciates the efforts of the people, government and the Forest Department of Karnataka, who are committed towards saving some of the greatest natural history for the future generations. Further, the movie spotlights the efforts of the government of Karnataka to save tigers and elephants as the state is a home to these majestic animals than anywhere else in the world. The money raised by this launch is being donated to the Tiger Foundation of Karnataka forest Department. WILD KARNATAKA sends a message of hope not just across India but across the whole world.

The channel in association with Rupa Publications also announced a long-term collaboration of adapting its TV shows into books. Following the success of Adrishya, and Khwabon Ka Safar, the partnership launched three books that are literary adaptations of Epic’s immensely popular series – Umeed India, Sharanam, and Dharmakshetra.

Tripathi said, “We have always been exploring on how we bring our stories to the larger audiences. Television offers a 24-hour window and a finite amount of catalogue. Compared to that, a book has a longer shelf life which can be referred to as and it adds a different dimension. All infotainment things we create are timeless in nature and having it in a book format adds to that timelessness dimension.”

The partnership with Rupa is a long-term sustained initiative to convert TV shows into books. The upcoming Epic India Quiz challenge will also be adapted in the book format.

The channel re-launched itself as an infotainment channel on July 2017 and Tripathi believes that the viewership of India-centric programmes has increased. “The genre has immense potential. There is a significant shift or increased interest of viewers to watch factual programming especially about the country which has been deprived to them via infotainment channels in the country because most of the programmes that we had have been skewed towards international content. This has opened up an entirely new genre of content for a lot of people who have seen this kind of content for the first time. The future is going to be about India-centric infotainment content,” opined Tripathi.

Epic is also striving to show content in other languages such as Tamil, Bengali and even English through its app. “I don’t see anybody else in this space doing this much for the infotainment-loving audience,” said Tripathi.

  • Environment & Wildlife film festival in Delhi to screen 74 films

Environment & Wildlife film festival in Delhi to screen 74 films

NEW DELHI: A total of 74 thematic films from 16 states and 11 countries will be screened at the oldest and largest Environment and Wildlife film festival in India, CMS Vatavaran, next month.

The Festival on the theme of ‘Water for Life’ will be celebrating its 8th competitive edition and will be held from 9 to 13 October at the NDMC Convention Centre in New Delhi.

CMS Vatavaran 2015 will be an amalgamation of celebration and discourse with film screenings, forums on critical water issues, panorama of international film festivals, workshops on filmmaking, exhibitions, green haat and much more.

The theme is ‘Water for Life’ with a special focus on “Conserving our Water Bodies”. It seeks to mark the interconnectedness of water and life and raise concern over the rapidly deteriorating condition of our water bodies.

Some Bollywood films will be screened, incliuding Kaun Kitne Paani Mein by Nila Madhab Panda; and Aisa Yeh Jahaan by Biswajeet Bora.

Media and filmmaking workshops will also be held.

Guests expected at the closing are Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.

There will be a talk on River Rejuvenation by Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati.

A Green Haat has been set up by the Environment Ministry with UNDP and exhibitions are by New Delhi Nature Society, and Anthony Acciavatti.

The fact that India has just four per cent of the world’s fresh water but 16 per cent of the global population is reason enough to begin a serious discussion on proper and effective watermanagement and conservation. CMS Vatavaran with its theme ‘Water for Life’ aims to do just that.

Several interesting endeavors on the theme ‘Water for Life’ apart from film screenings like seminars, workshops, exhibition, cultural performances and award ceremony focusing on the environmental, social and economic aspects of water conservation will be part of the film festival and forum.

Contemporary issues related to water and conservation will be deliberated upon by eminent conservationists, policy makers, environment journalists and the concerned communities in the forum.

‘Water for Life’ being a cross cutting theme necessitates a multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder participation in discussions to address the issues in a holistic manner.

The American Centre is the Country Partner of the 8th CMS Vatavatan. A special curtain raiser programme will also be organised on the evening of 8 October in the presence of American filmmakers, guests and delegates. Seminars, workshops, book launches and talks will be organised in partnership with The Asia Foundation, GIZ, Arghyam, CSE, CEE, RSTV and WWF to name a few.

“CMS Vatavaran is doing a magnificent job, making people aware by arranging these festivals and taking them to different cities and involving more and more from the younger generation. CMS Vatavaran is a great platform to inform people about issues like wildlife conservation, sustainable technology and climate change,” said veteran filmmaker and actor Amol Palekar, who is head of the award jury.

“In the 8th competitive festival, we are focusing on water and problems in water management systems around the world to show the disturbing effects these choices have on human beings. The theme has been chosen keeping in mind the fact that the way water scarcity issues are addressed, impacts upon the successful achievement of most of the development goals,” added CMS director general P N Vasanti.
