Weekend curfew in Delhi, cinema halls to operate with only 30 per cent occupancy

New Delhi : After witnessing the highest ever single-day spike in the number of Covid2019 cases, the Delhi government has decided to impose a strict weekend curfew in the national capital, starting 10 pm on Friday.

The AAP government has also ordered all the malls, auditoriums and spas to shut shop from 16 April till further orders. Cinema halls, however, have been allowed to remain open during the weekdays, but can function with only 30 per cent occupancy.

"I had a meeting with the L-G. We have decided to impose weekend curfew in Delhi. This is because people generally go out for work on weekdays and entertainment on weekends. In order to break the chain we are imposing a weekend curfew, exempting essential services," said Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday.

According to the new restrictions, no dine-in options will be allowed in restaurants and eateries and only home deliveries will be permitted. The weekend curfew will start at 10 pm on Friday to 6 am on Monday. However, all essential services will remain functional.

A night curfew has also been imposed in Noida and Ghaziabad Friday onwards.

The decision comes two days after the Maharashtra government announced strict restrictions for the next two weeks in wake of the alarming surge in the number of infections. However, unlike Delhi, Maharashtra has also closed all movie theatres as well. All television and film shoots have been shut down till 1 May.

The country is reeling under a severe second wave of the novel Coronavirus, with the number of caseloads surpassing last year's records. On Thursday, India recorded a record two lakh cases during the last 24 hours and over 1,038 deaths.

The national capital too reported 17,282 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, its highest spike so far. The number of daily Covid deaths has also been increasing, with 104 deaths recorded on Wednesday alone.

Rocky Handsome comes a cropper; Kapoor & Sons does well in second week

The only release of the week, Rocky Handsome, came a cropper. A poor adaptation of the hit South Korean film, The Man From Nowhere,  RH is so poorly recreated in Hindi that it works for nobody; neither its wannabe re-launch planning actor, John Abraham, nor its director who uses the vehicle to launch his acting career. The film is a blot on its scriptwriters and the director. To sum it up, the whole exercise looked juvenile.

The film got the benefit of a solo release as well as a public holiday on Friday, the 25th to garner a face-saving opening. But, it registered a drop on the Saturday that followed as word of mouth went negative and collections nosedived on Sunday. It ended its opening weekend with a total of Rs15.3 crore.

Kapoor & Sons has established itself as family fare. After a good opening weekend, it continued to do well through rest of the week to end its first week with a healthy Rs46.8 crore.

TeraaSurroor remained poor even in its second week. In the absence of any appreciation, the film managed to add just about Rs20 lakh to take its two week tally to Rs10.9 crore.

Jai Gangaajal is at the end of its run at the end of its third week. It collected Rs 1.05 crore to show collections of Rs31.95 crore for its three week run.

  • Box Office: ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ takes Rs 21 crore in opening weekend

Box Office: ‘Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2’ takes Rs 21 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: ‘It is the season for small budget comedies be it about romance or sex. Pyaar Ka Punchnama 2 appeals hugely to youth and proves that a film has to be youth oriented for they are the ones who guarantee a decent opening at the box office and also spread good or bad word of mouth.

Despite very limited promotions, the film took an impressive opening and the figures reflect the fact. The film only showed a marked rise in collections on Saturday and Sunday. And, despite being Navratri period, which is not the best of times for a new release, especially one counting mainly on its youth appeal. The film collected a heartening Rs 20.8 crore in its opening weekend.

Wedding Pullav is poor and failed to get footfalls through its opening weekend.

On the other hand, Jazbaa, a comeback film for Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after a five year break and an expected hat-trick for Irrfan Khan, who has given two much appreciated films in Piku andTalvar, falls prey to its bad scripting and inapt handling. The film could not sustain its collection after its opening weekend and the figures dropped through the week. The film could manage to put together just Rs 20.6 crore for its first week.

Singh Is Bliing loses the plot in its second week with the collections dropping by a major chunk as the film collects Rs 10.5 crore to take its two week total to Rs 72.65.

Talvar maintains a strong trend in its second week cashing in on the appreciation received. The film collects Rs 10.5 crore to take its two week tally to Rs 26 crore.

Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon has added Rs 75 lakh in its third week to take its three week total to Rs 43.95 crore making a star out of the TV comedian in the process.

  • Bhaag Milkha Bhaag collects Rs 30.6 crore in opening weekend

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag collects Rs 30.6 crore in opening weekend

MUMBAI: Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, which started slow on Friday, improved over next two days, peaking on Sunday. The film found patronage at multiplexes while the single screens reflected poor performance at most places. The film has managed to collect Rs 30.6 crore in its opening weekend. The film is expected to sustain at a few multiplexes in Mumbai, Delhi and NCR besides Punjab. The distributors of D-Day, due next Friday, skeptical about getting playtime are now sure of good screens.

Sixteen has failed to get audience.

The Ranveer Singh and Sonakshi Sinha love story Lootera which had a fair weekend due to support from Metro multiplexes, dropped drastically after the weekend and ended its first week run with Rs 22.4 crore. With its limited face value and heavy storyline, it failed to sustain. This is Vikramaditya Motwane‘s second directorial venture, following the critically acclaimed Udaan (2010).

Policegiri, which stars Sanjay Dutt, has failed badly; its typical south content, Dutt and crude treatment failed to jell. The film has collected Rs 13.25 crore in its first week. Dutt‘s next release this year would be the Zanjeer remake where he would be reprising the memorable role of Sher Khan previously essayed by the late legend Pran in the 1973 original.

The Emraan Hashmi and Vidya Balan starrer Ghanchakkar has added Rs 1.5 crore in its second week to take its two week total to Rs 28.8 crore. With a poor script and execution, the film has not added much.

Raanjhanaa, which marked the debut of the south superstar Dhanush of Kolavari Di fame, and met with mixed response due to its second half, has sustained well in its third week by collecting Rs 7.25 crore and taking its three week tally to Rs 56.55 crore.

Excel Productions‘ youth flick Fukrey survives its fourth week with figures of Rs 1.5 crore and taking its four week total to Rs 34.2 crore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani has added Rs 50 lakh for its sixth week to take its six week tally to Rs 182.55 crore. Ayan Mukherjee‘s second directorial venture has certainly gone down well with the audiences across the globe; it has certainly set the benchmark for the highest grosser for this year.

  • Fourth of July weekend garners $229 mn for domestic BO

Fourth of July weekend garners $229 mn for domestic BO

MUMBAI: As predicted fireworks blazed at the Fourth of July box office which headed to $229 million (mn) domestic through Sunday (+16 per cent from last year) and a new three-day weekend record for the holiday. But there was only bad news for Disney‘s expensive The Lone Ranger (3,904 theaters) which opened disastrously Wednesday, remained weak on Thursday, did only $10.6 mn Friday, and flatlined for $10.7 mn Saturday. That‘s a very disappointing five-day holiday of $48.9 mn max. The two-quadrant Western won‘t cover its high $215 mn-$250 mn cost despite this holiday‘s 4x multiple. The Johnny Depp – Armie Hammer starrer‘s domestic cume is way below.

Disney‘s initial lowball projection of $65 mn and the third big-budget bomb of summer 2013. (Two Sony pics – White House Down and After Earth – also were expensive bombs.) As Deadline first reported, the studio in August 2011 shut down Lone Ranger for six months after the budget ballooned out of control. Disney would have been better off scraping the pic altogether. Depp‘s worldwide popularity may help overseas where oaters usually don‘t excel.Lone Ranger opened day and date in 30 per cent of the foreign landscape but only four big markets: Italy and Russia (released 2 July) and Australia and Korea (4 July). It made $24.3 mn internationally for a global cume of $73.2 mn through Sunday.

The result for the no 1 movie was far different, Illumination Entertainment‘s and Universal‘s Despicable Me 2 (3,957 theaters) which only cost a very reasonable $76 mn. It is the no 1 film in the world this weekend, opening atop the US and Canadian box office with a record-breaking estimated gross of $142.1 mn. The 3D toon posted the biggest five-day opening for an animated film and the top three-day animated opening in July (earning $82.5 mn).

Internationally, its gross widened to 6,849 dates in 45 territories to total $151.1 mn. The combined global cume is $293.2 mn. This marks Universal‘s second biggest international opening weekend ever behind Fast & Furious 6 ($161M). Not only is DM2 performing well ahead of the original film globally but also on par with such toon franchise megahits as Toy Story 3, Ice Age 4, Madagascar 3 and Shrek 4. And the sequel‘s opening is among the top animated openings of all time in every market.

  • Weekend Top Five blaze the box office with Pixar’s Monstr University at No 1e

Weekend Top Five blaze the box office with Pixar’s Monstr University at No 1e

MUMBAI: As the Hollywood Box office unleashed two new tentpoles, Roland Emmerich‘s White House Down and Paul Feig‘s The Heat, the top five grossing the weekend opening have changed. Although the new releases have taken over last weeks World War Z and Man of Steel, the animation dramaMonsters University seems to be sailing strong at the number One position. Sandra Bullock‘s comedy action The Heat confirms the second position followed closely byWhite House Down at number three.

As per Fandango, Bullock‘s comedyThe Heat sold over 50 per cent more advance tickets than Feig‘s previous project, Bridesmaids. An interesting Fandango survey revealed that 88 per cent of ticket buyers wanted more female-oriented laughter. Based on the Thursday opening and Friday‘s weekend collections, Pixar‘s second highest grossing prequel Monsters University raked in nearly $17 million pushing its worldwide grossing to $173.7 million and counting. Sources from the industry predict the animation flick will cross the $200 million mark by this weekend. However the coming week looks bleak as Illumination Entertainment‘s sequel Despicable Me 2 hits the screens on 3 July.

Over the two day run, The Heat minted nearly $41 million while Emmerich‘s catastrophic action White House Down grossed over $33.3 million.

At the number four position, Brad‘s Zombie flick amasses a fair $32.5 million followed last by the red capped Kryptonian reboot Man of Steel at $ 21.5 million. The $225 million dollar high octane superhero flick has grossed nearly $450 million, however with stiff competition in the coming week, Man of Steel may be pushed out from the Top five.

  • Raanjhanaa collects Rs 18.75 crore for the weekend, YJHD still going strong at Rs 172.95 crore

Raanjhanaa collects Rs 18.75 crore for the weekend, YJHD still going strong at Rs 172.95 crore

MUMBAI: Raanjhanaa, starring Dhanush, Sonam Kapoor and Abhay Deol which opened with weak collections, did well to gather momentum over the weekend. However, a disappointing second half plot being a major drawback, generating bad word of mouth, the film is not expected to carry on the momentum it generated over the weekend. Also, with its hero‘s mass appeal riding on the ‘Kolaveri Di‘ fame, the film was expected to do well in single screen theatres but that has not happened. The film has gone on to end its opening weekend with Rs 18.75 crore.

Enemmy, Mithun Chakraborty‘s home production starring Mithun, Mahakshay, Suniel Shetty, Kay Kay Menon and Johnny Lever is doing poor business, barely collecting about a crore for its opening weekend.

Shortcut Romeo the remake of Susi Ganeshan‘s own Tamil film Thiruttu Payale, starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, Ameesha Patel and Puja Gupta is a disaster, finding no takers.

Fukrey, a north-centric youth comedy, has sustained reasonably well in its first week with major boost coming from North. The film has collected Rs 17.5 crore in first seven days, with as much as 50 per cent coming from Delhi/NCR/Punjab. The film is reported to have done very well in its second weekend too, assuring the film will emerge a moderate earner.

Yamla Pagla Deewana 2 from the Deol clan has dropped to less than 10 per cent of its first week figures collecting Rs 2.55 crore in its second week and taking its two week total to Rs 30.1 crore.

Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani continues to be strong in its third week. The film has collected Rs 19.65 crore in third week to take its three week total to Rs 172.95 crore. This is certainly Ranbir Kapoor‘s biggest hit so far in a career spanning just six years from his debut withSaawariya (2007) till his last release in 2012 with Barfi! The Kapoor scion has certainly come off age in a big way.

Aashiqui 2, the Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer has added Rs 20 lakh in its eighth week, taking its eight week tally to Rs 78.5 crore. This film has certainly exceeded everyone‘s expectations. The music of the movie has been much appreciated by audiences across the country.
