Dish TV bets on ThinkAnalytics to supercharge Watcho’s AI discovery

LONDON:  Dish TV India has tapped ThinkAnalytics to power personalised recommendations and search across its Watcho streaming platform, a super-aggregator that bundles more than two dozen OTT services alongside live television.

The deal gives Watcho access to ThinkAnalytics’ ThinkMediaAI suite, covering metadata enrichment, real-time viewer profiling, dynamic user interfaces, rail positioning, editorial curation, A/B testing and business intelligence. The system promises to surface both global hits and niche regional dramas with equal ease, in 12 languages, for millions of paying subscribers.

Dish TV chief technology officer V K Gupta said the partnership delivers “the precision and scale to delight every subscriber,” adding that Watcho’s editorial teams will gain faster decision-making and the ability to experiment rapidly. “Our teams can innovate at speed, maximise audience engagement and unlock new value in today’s dynamic OTT landscape,” he said.

ThinkAnalytics co-founder & CTO Peter Docherty called Watcho “a pioneer in super-aggregating streaming services,” noting that two-thirds of India’s population are millennials or younger. “Dish TV recognises the need to engage these viewers. With ThinkMediaAI, it can monetise that opportunity while delivering a superior viewing experience,” he said.

The agreement underscores Watcho’s shift from a simple content aggregator to a full-fledged entertainment platform with curated, immersive experiences. As the library expands with more international and regional titles, the AI engine is expected to ensure high-quality recommendations even for hyper-local interests.

Dish TV’s wider footprint is formidable: more than 587 channels and services, including 89 HD feeds, four international channels, 19 value-added services and 21 leading OTT apps. Its distribution network stretches across 9,500 towns via 2,334 distributors and about 158,000 dealers, supported by 24/7 call centres in 14 cities handling queries in 12 languages.

For ThinkAnalytics, whose technology already powers discovery for global heavyweights, the tie-up offers a showcase in one of the world’s fastest-growing streaming markets, where competition for attention is as fierce as the appetite for content.

  • Zee Entertainment bets big on micro-dramas and streaming distribution

Zee Entertainment bets big on micro-dramas and streaming distribution

MUMBAI: Zee Entertainment Enterprises is placing a Rs 90 crore wager on the future of India’s fragmented media landscape, betting that micro-dramas and consolidated distribution will unlock new revenue streams as audiences scatter across platforms.

The company’s board approved investments in optionally convertible debentures of two recently incorporated subsidiaries on 14 August. The bigger bet—Rs 50 crore—goes to ZBullet Enterprises, launched just two months ago to develop “Bullet,” a micro-drama application targeting younger viewers with bite-sized series. The remaining Rs 40 crore will flow to Advance Media Distribution Ltd (AMDL), a wholly owned subsidiary designed to consolidate Zee’s entire content distribution empire.

AMDL represents the more strategic play. The new entity will handle distribution for all Zee Entertainment and Zee Media channels, plus the company’s streaming platform Zee5. It will also take over distribution of Watcho, an over-the-top platform owned by DTH operator Dish TV that Zee currently distributes. Beyond its parent company’s assets, AMDL plans to distribute third-party television channels and streaming services on a commission basis.

The consolidation strategy follows a well-trodden path in Indian broadcasting. Zee previously shifted its television distribution to Taj TV before bringing it back in-house. Viacom18, now merged with Star India, operated through IndiaCast, while Sony Pictures Networks manages distribution through its own subsidiary.
The logic is compelling: as audiences consume content across both traditional television and digital platforms simultaneously, a unified distribution approach promises to unlock subscription revenue from both streams. The move also positions Zee to serve smaller channels and streaming platforms that lack the resources and expertise to manage complex distribution arrangements themselves.

ZBullet’s micro-drama focus, meanwhile, mirrors successful platforms in China where ultra-short episodic content has captivated mobile-first audiences. For a company built on Bollywood films and Hindi soap operas, the shift towards smartphone-friendly formats represents a significant strategic pivot.

Neither venture has generated revenue yet, with both still preparing to commence operations. The investments will be made in tranches as business plans are finalised. But the timing suggests Zee recognises that India’s entertainment future belongs to companies that can master both content creation and distribution across every conceivable platform.

  • Loss signal as Dish TV Q1 net loss widens and revenue falls 27.6 percent

Loss signal as Dish TV Q1 net loss widens and revenue falls 27.6 percent

MUMBAI: Dish TV is still buffering and this time, the picture is far from rosy. The DTH operator reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 94.53 crore for the quarter ended 30 June 2025, a sharp plunge from the mere Rs 1.56 crore loss logged in the same period last year. Revenue from operations shrank 27.6 per cent year-on-year to Rs 329.36 crore, down from Rs 455.29 crore, while total income stood at Rs 334.11 crore, aided by Rs 4.75 crore in other income.

Costs, however, went in the opposite direction. Total expenses climbed to Rs 425.92 crore, led by operating costs of Rs 142.10 crore, employee benefits of Rs 42.16 crore, and finance costs of Rs 64.12 crore. Depreciation and amortisation weighed in at Rs 105.28 crore.

The company’s balance sheet remains under heavy strain, with accumulated losses now exceeding equity share capital, pushing net worth into the negative. Adding to the pressure is a long-running license fee battle with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) Dish TV has set aside Rs 4,680.24 crore for the dispute, even as the MIB slapped a fresh Rs 8,735.67 crore demand (including interest) in April, which the operator is contesting in court.

For FY25, Dish TV’s annual loss narrowed to Rs 487 crore from a massive Rs 1,966 crore in FY24, but total revenue slid 15.6 per cent to Rs 1,567.6 crore, hit by falling Pay TV subscriber numbers and stagnant ARPU. EBITDA came in at Rs 529.1 crore, with margins easing to 33.75 per cent from last year’s 40.6 per cent.

While exceptional items of Rs 335.4 crore, a pre-tax loss of Rs 152.3 crore, and mounting competition from DTH rivals, cable, telecom, and OTT players dimmed the outlook, the company is leaning on its digital play. Watcho, its OTT arm, crossed the 10 million paid subscriber mark, thanks to premium content aggregation from Jiocinema, Zee5, Sonyliv and others, the launch of Watcho Fliqs for creator-led IP, and smart set-top boxes like the Dish Smrt Hub.

The strategy now is clear: retain quality subscribers, push regional content, and keep hybrid offerings in the mix because in today’s entertainment market, staying in the game might just be about playing on every screen available.

With her loyal jaguar in tow, she embarks on a heart-thumping journey filled with friendship, grit, and ecological urgency. The cast also features Emily Bett Rickards and Wayne Charles Baker.

The title is the latest headliner on Fliqs, Dish TV India’s premium digital content vertical within the Watcho app. Positioned as an OTT-style destination, Fliqs curates original web series, short films, movies in multiple languages and more importantly, hands creators the reins with full IP rights and monetisation tools. With new drops weekly, Fliqs is steadily building a content jungle of its own.

  • “Our core business is providing content”: Sukhpreet Singh

“Our core business is providing content”: Sukhpreet Singh

Mumbai: Dish TV is transforming the entertainment landscape in India with the introduction of its innovative offering, ‘Dish TV Smart+’. As a pioneering move in the industry, this initiative redefines the way customers experience entertainment by providing seamless access to both TV and OTT content across all screens, without any additional charges.

With ‘Dish TV Smart+’, both new and existing subscribers of Dish TV and D2H can enjoy a plethora of popular OTT apps alongside their chosen TV subscription pack. This comprehensive service ecosystem ensures that entertainment is available anytime, anywhere, on any screen, be it through the Watcho OTT Super App, smart devices such as set-top boxes, or Android STBs. Moreover, Dish TV is forging partnerships with leading TV and Mobile Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to seamlessly integrate their services into these devices, thereby enhancing the overall user experience.

Not long ago, there was apprehension among TV channels, DTH, and Cable TV operators regarding the rapid rise of OTT entertainment in India. However, the landscape has evolved significantly since then. Today, TV networks have adapted by launching their own OTT platforms, while DTH operators have shifted their approach to become aggregators of content.

Indiantelevision.com on the sideline of the launch, caught up with Dish TV & Watcho corporate head of marketing Sukhpreet Singh. During the interview, Singh discussed the rationale behind the launch of their new initiative and shed light on the challenges encountered within the pay TV ecosystem and the DTH industry.

    Edited excerpts

On the need of launching Dish TV Smart+

The need is the fact that we are in the content distribution. We don’t differentiate between where the content is coming from Customers watch content in linear platforms as well as OTT. Our job was to bring all that together in a way which is a good experience and affordable for the customers.

On the features that differentiate Dish TV Smart + from other Dish TV offerings

First thing is we are the only DTH at a price of 200+ both that provides DTH and OTT. Secondly, we are the only one who’s providing a complete ecosystem of DTH plus OTT packs along with devices and OTT apps. I think we are the only one that is able to provide any screen, anywhere and anytime at that price point.

On Dish TV Smart + integrating traditional satellite TV with online streaming services

All the traditional satellite channels are available on hardboxes. If you look at it, we have our traditional boxes, connected boxes and our OTT app which doesn’t need a box. In that app, we have live TV, OTT content from various OTT apps. So if you take all of them together, whatever customer you are, whatever devices you have, we will be able to provide you with content.

On Dobhal showcasing pay TV + smart TV to be increased by 183 million by 2030 during the presentation and the challenges faced in pure pay TV ecosystem

What was shown in the presentation was pay TV + smart TV. There is going to be a lot of hybrid consumption, that is what we are trying to tell. If you only look at the pure pay TV, they might not grow. If you take pay TV, smart TV and all the hybrid consumption, that will work. What we are seeing is people are watching a lot of content, even if it’s streaming content, they are watching it a lot on television. Consumption on television is not decreasing, that is what we described. That increase is basically pay TV and smart TV. People are gonna watch a lot more content on television and like I said, it is very narrow to describe yourself as the only satellite and DTH provider. Most of the major broadcasters are providing traditional linear services also and streaming & OTT services. Most of the major OTT apps come from the broadcasters. They are also trying to innovate. It brings me back to the point that it doesn’t matter where the content is coming from and there are all types of customers. Even in a single family, there are people watching television, there are people watching OTT only on their mobile, there are people watching OTT on smart TVs. Our job is to provide content for the modern Indian family.

On TRAI’s Performance Indicator Report highlighting the decline of the active subscriber base for pay DTH by 2.06 per cent from 66.62 million in December 2022 to 65.25 million in March 2023

Yes! The numbers which you can see in the TRAI reports, they are all in sync. We all know that if we are talking about only traditional ways of watching content then obviously it will come down. But we have to look at our business which is providing content whether it is traditional or new, doesn’t matter. Every traditional thing changes into new. Our core business is providing content. If the traditional way is coming down, then the new way will go up. If we are focused only on the traditional way, we will also go down.

On the future of content consumption in India

The way we see it from the business perspective, the number of hours that people spend while watching content is exploding. People have so much content to watch that they get confused. Right from niche content to blockbuster ones, everything is available along with many languages. Now you have such high quality content in regional languages. Even if you take a very niche language, then you will find a lot of beautiful content available, thanks to OTT platforms that are making it possible. So it’s a great time for content, it’s a great time for consuming content for all kinds of screens and our job is to make it possible.
