Prasar Bharati looks to exploit archived music on digital platform

NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati is looking at different ways to exploit music in its vast archives by taking it online.

Speaking exclusively to Indiantelevision.com, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar said that Prasar Bharati was examining how music available in the archives of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) could be exploited by putting it on the digital platform.

Sircar informed that DD alone had over 200,000 hours of recordings in its archives. Of this, 4,000 hours was ready to be published and another 20,000 had been digitally restored.

Additionally, he said that the pubcaster was also considering a proposal to provide a scroll free-of-charge to cultural organizations to announce their forthcoming programmes on DD Bharati.

On a separate note, Prasar Bharati has also instructed the news wings of both AIR and DD to cover all important events simultaneously and then share the inputs. Sircar said that the instruction had first been given over a year ago and admitted that there were still cases where this was not being done. He said that the directive included events like lectures or lecture demonstrations, biographical works, and the best performances of any artiste.

Responding to another query, Sircar said that short wave radio had to be kept alive for diplomatic reasons but the medium wave was gradually being moved to FM so that all 850 million mobile users in the country will get access to this. Vividh Bharati had already been put on FM.

AIR and DD channels to simulcast PM’s ‘Mann Ki Baat’

NEW DELHI: This month’s Mann Ki Baat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on All India Radio (AIR), addressed to farmers and rural India, will be broadcast at 11 am on 22 March.

It will also be simultaneously broadcast live on Doordarshan (DD) channels. The address can also be heard on Vividh Bharati, FM Gold, and FM Rainbow radio. The programme will also be live-streamed on the Prime Minister’s official website.

This is the sixth edition of the radio programme in which Modi shares his thoughts with Indian citizens. The focus of PM’s address will be on farmers and allied issues. He had invited citizens to share their ideas and thoughts on the subject in the Open Forum of MyGov.in.

The Prime Minister has already interacted directly with people in the earlier five editions of Mann Ki Baat, the last one being addressed to children and young people sitting for their final examinations in March and April.

Modi has dwelt upon several issues close to the hearts of the people such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, promotion of khadi, skill development, scholarship for disabled children, infrastructure for educational institutions, and menace of drugs.

The Prime Minister also shared the Mann Ki Baat forum with the US president Barack Obama during his visit to India where the two leaders interacted with the people on a host of issues.

Vividh Bharati now available on FM 102.8 MHz in Mumbai

NEW DELHI: The popular Vividh Bharati channel of All India Radio (AIR) in Mumbai is now available on FM mode on 102.8 MHz.

The FM Transmitter for this service was inaugurated by Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore in Worli, Mumbai.

The channel, which was until now on Medium Wave, has been very popular over the past 50 years but saw a downfall in listenership with the coming in of the Frequency Modulation (FM), which is also available in car radios and mobile phones.

The inaugural function yesterday was attended by a galaxy of mediapersons, cultural luminaries, eminent personalities from Bollywood and broadcasting including actors Vikram Gokhale, Jackie Shroff,  Brijbushan and Vishwas Mehendale. Amin Sayani, who has been credited for the popularity of this channel with his vibrant voice and his knowledge about music, was also present.

VB Mumbai transmission begins at 05:55 AM and goes up to 11:30 PM. This service is in addition to the two existing FM services of AIR namely FM Gold and FM Rainbow. A dedicated 5 KW transmitter has been installed for the VB Service in Mumbai.

While Vividh Bharati services were available across most parts of the country on FM mode, it was transmitted only on Medium Wave in the four metros (with the highest population densities).

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar sought to address this matter as he felt that this did not allow ‘people on the move’ in the four metros to enjoy Vividh Bharati’s superlative and varied content.

With the approval of the Prasar Bharati Board, the idea was presented to the current government when it took over, and the I&B Ministry supported the proposal as well.

Vividh Bharati is now available on FM mode in three metros of the country (Kolkata: 101.8 Mhz; Chennai: 100.5Mhz and Mumbai: 102.8Mhz) and will shortly also be available in Delhi on FM.

Rathore said radio not only regales but also educates constantly. It is a companion and does not distract its listeners. “We have been listening to radio and simultaneously doing other mundane things,” he said.

The 5 KW FM Transmitter will be upgraded to 20 KW FM in the near future and will cover a radius over 80 kilometres once installed and made operational.

PM Modi to broadcast his ‘Mann ki Baat’ through All India Radio

NEW DELHI: After his visit to the United Nations where he expounded his world view, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will now share his ‘Mann ki Baat’ with the nation through All India Radio on 3 October.

Announcing it on Twitter, Modi said, “Received many ideas & suggestions for my forthcoming Radio programme. Have decided to hold the first programme on 3rd October at 11:00 AM.”

The broadcast can also be carried by any private radio or television channel wanting to carry it.

The broadcast will be carried simultaneously by AIR in different modes and channels including medium wave, shortwave, FM network, Vividh Bharati and local radio stations. This broadcast will thus be available to 99.2 per cent population of India.

Doordarshan has also been requested to carry the audio of this programme with suitable visuals and footages.

Regional language versions of the broadcast will be aired in the regional network of AIR at 8.00 pm on the same day. This is to ensure dissemination of the massage to the largest possible audience.

The Prime Minister will share his thoughts on a variety of issues. A separate Open Forum has been created on MyGov for citizens to share their comments for the forthcoming radio programme.

  • Prasar Bharati plans to enter the European market, says Sircar

Prasar Bharati plans to enter the European market, says Sircar

NEW DELHI: Prasar Bharati plans to enter the European market in a move to expand its footprint and present the Indian voice to international audiences.

Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar told the Global Media Forum in Bonn that: “Our international forays have been made by private journalism to a small extent. It is time for the public broadcaster to start thinking of collaboration with the best in the market and come out to present the voice of India or the voices of India. In fact that is the reason why I am here.”

He said the pubcaster was thinking in terms of going in for European penetration.

Meanwhile, he reiterated his demand for greater freedom to work and said the present government was aware of his views in this regard. “Whatever I have said is there in public discourse. I will not like to rake it up here. This is not the place. My stand or our stand on autonomy, professional autonomy, the autonomy to operate, has been made clear,” he said.

Sircar, who gave his views on ‘The future of journalism and the role of international broadcasters’ during a session of media summit, held “typical bureaucratic mentality” responsible for people’s perception of Prasar Bharati being a government controlled body.

“That perception is because all the members of Prasar Bharati are government servants,” he said. “So they carry their mentality with them. I was also a government servant. I told them that I took an oath to remain at arm’s length (with the government) and if I have paid the price for it, why don’t you guys come forward,” he added.

“There is a spirit in Prasar Bharati. It is not pro-government or anti-government. It is a question of taking up the facts as they come,” he said.

“As I said a rape has to be reported. But we report not the rape and sensational part, we report the retribution part, the punishment part. That is the important part,” he said.

Sircar said it is for the nation to make up its mind for bringing in changes to ‘doordarshan’ video service run by Prasar Bharati.

“We raised the issue (in the conference) of India’s public broadcaster not being international class. Our problem and our identity and our task were completely different – the aim was to hold India together. A very typical country with 24 languages and 600 dialects. Our task was to hold the India together through ‘Vividh Bharati’ (a radio service) through a common discourse, through a common shred experience. We have done that. It is now time for India to move outwards,” he said.

During the conference, the CEO lauded the role of social media in bringing about the changes in people’s thinking.

“Social media played a major role in that (crowd sourcing in general elections) aspect. That crowd source views or open views what was later turned out to be one of those instruments that brought majority of people (out to cast their votes in recently concluded general elections),” Sircar added.

A large number of participants including journalists from many countries took part in this first meet organized by the Deutshe Welle.

Doordarshan director general Tripurari Sharan said that the series is based on real-life stories of women in different parts of the country, who have come into the vortex of democracy. “Though an element of drama has been added to keep the viewer glued, the stories are based on real experiences,” he informed.
