MUMBAI: Nelson Mandela said ‘Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world,’ and educating girls not only improves gender equality, but also promotes the healthy development of families, communities and nations. Taking this thought forward, Zee Anmol launches ‘Afsar Bitiya’ premiering Saturday 25 June at 7:30 PM that will inspire audiences across the country. Set in Bhagalpur (Bihar), Afsar Bitiya highlights the importance of girl child education. It is the story of Krishna Raj, a young village girl and her dream to work hard and make a difference in society.

Mitaali Nag plays the lead role of Krishna, an ambitious woman who is strong willed and self-sufficient. Coming from a lower middle class family, where no one had ever got a better job than a clerk, Krishna, through her hard work and dedication becomes a B.D.O. (Block Development Officer). The show traces the journey of this honest and determined girl from an extremely moderate background who deals with ever changing family situations after she becomes successful in her career.

‘Afsar Bitiya’ is produced by the popular television content writer Mr. Rakesh Paswan under the banner ‘Village Boy Productions’. Commenting on ‘Afsar Bitiya, Mr. Paswan said, “This subject is very close to my heart. The inspiration of the story is my own little sister who is a BDO in one of the districts in Jharkhand. Through the lead protagonist Krishna, I hope millions of girls living in small towns and villages of India will be inspired to pursue their dreams and not succumb to societal pressures. I also want to send a message to all the parents to give equal importance to their daughters to help them build a bright and glorious career for themselves.”

Along with Mitali Nag, veteran actors Virendra Saxena and Shahbaz Khan and young heartthrobs Kinshuk Mahajan, Yash Sinha and Shivshakti Sachdev play pivotal roles in this show. Commenting on the launch of the show Mitaali Nag said, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be playing the lead role of Krishna in ‘Afsar Bitiya’ simply because of its strong social message! A Block Development Officer is a person who works towards community development and helps in uplifting the lives of the weaker sections of the society. I read a lot about the responsibilities of a B.D.O before taking up this project and it really inspired me. I will feel good if I’m able to inspire even one young Indian girl among teeming millions to become a B. D. O.”

Krishna’s unexpected achievement bring a lot of happiness for her family, but is her happiness meant to stay forever? Will Krishna be able to keep her values after she becomes ‘Afsar Bitiya’?

Doc on Anna Hazare to open next month

MUMBAI: Anna Hazare and his campaign against corruption has inspired a budding director Ankit Narayan to make a 26-minute documentary film Jai Bharat that focuses on the Jan Lokpal bill.

The documentary highlights the differences between the government‘s Lokpal Bill and Team Anna‘s version.

Narayan said, “I was so inspired by this movement against corruption that I thought of making a film and educate people about it. We are not encashing on Hazare‘s popularity, we are trying to pass the information and educate people about the movement about corruption.”

“The film talks about both the bills – Jan Lokpal and Lokpal. The benefits and losses of both these bills,” he said.

The documentary now awaits the Censor Board clearance. “Once the documentary is passed by the Censor Board, it will be released in the first or second week of January,” Narayan said.

The film features Arvind Kejriwal and Virendra Saxena with footage of Anna Hazare and Kiran Bedi.

  • Hindi feature film on TV sting may flare new controversy

NEW DELHI: Coming as it does when it is such a hot topic with the government and the media, a new feature film based on sting operations is bound to stir once again the controversy over how far television channels can go with sting operations.

Interestingly, the film It’s Breaking News stars Koel Purie, daughter of media magnate Aroon Purie who heads the TV Today network and the Aaj Tak Channel, in the role of a journalist who helps a rape victim through a sting operation to expose the police personnel behind this racket.

Koel told a press meet here yesterday that the film, which is inspired by the true life case of former Jharkhand Inspector General of Police PS Natarajan, was also attempting to examine how far the TV channels can go when investigating crime and whether the media was fair in reporting certain cases.

She said that in the case in question, the electronic media had exposed the racket through a sting, but then had not bothered to follow up on what happened later, or what happened to the girl who was repeatedly made a victim of sexual abuse and was shown unabashedly by the channel in a semi-nude state. She said after watching the coverage, she was convinced that the channel had gone too far.

(Natarajan had been arrested around 13 months after he had been declared an absconder in the case exposed by the sting by a TV channel involving a tribal girl.)

Answering a question, she said she was not sure if repeated showing of such scenes was because of viewer interest or TRPs, but the fact remained that this continued unabashedly without bothering to see the other side: the pain it caused to many.

The film has been written and directed by Vishal Inamdaar and produced by Smita Shreyas Mhaskar with music and lyrics by Kaushal S Inamdaar and Saahil respectively. It stars among others Koel Purie, Swati Sen, Virendra Saxena, Vinay Apte, Harsh Chhaya, Shishir Sharma, Abhimanyu Singh, Tanushree, and Amit Behl.

Vishal said it was purely coincidental that the film was being released on 5 October and had not been timed in view of the recent controversy involving Live India. He said in reply to a question that it was either for the media itself or for the judiciary to decide where to draw the line while undertaking sting operations.

Asked if he had taken Koel for the role of the journalist in view of her background, Vishal replied in the negative and said he learnt of her status in the TV Today family only later.

Swati, who is making her debut in this film, did not think starring in the bold role of a woman who is repeatedly made the victim of sexual abuse posed any threat to her getting other roles or getting tagged. She said the protagonist portrayed by her was an average girl who was shown having her positive and negative shades. She was not an opportunist but simply took the help of the journalist and the ‘Dateline’ TV channel.

Interestingly, the film has been produced for around Rs 25 million collected in small sums from around 221 small investors who contributed sums between Rs 10,000 to Rs 200,000 each.
