Guilt-free Motherhood: SUGAR Cosmetics Mother’s Day vow

Mumbai: SUGAR Cosmetics, one of India’s leading omnichannel beauty companies and a cult favorite amongst Gen Z and Millennial consumers, concludes their Mother’s Day campaign,  #AllMomsAreGoodMoms, featuring celebrated mom influencers, Kishwer Merchant, Mili Jhaveri, Smriti Khanna.

While epitomizing selfless caregiving, mothers often question whether they are fulfilling motherhood correctly. Despite juggling professional commitments, canceled vacations, missed social gatherings, lack of time for shopping, and countless other instances, mothers still feel guilty for not doing enough for their children. #AllMomAreGoodMoms campaign focuses on overcoming this “mom guilt” and prodding mothers to pursue their dreams, grant themselves a break, and prioritize self-care while nurturing their children. The campaign is centered on this thought-provoking message for mothers to embrace themselves and redefine motherhood on their terms.

“As a mother of two, I am aware of the fact that mothers go through changes not only physically, but also mentally. #AllMomAreGoodMoms underscores the importance of self-care, whether it’s a mood-lifting lipstick or a morning run that keeps you fit. There is nothing wrong with being kind to yourself because being a mom doesn’t mean hitting pause on your life, it means striking a balance. It’s about acknowledging that taking care of self is as important as caring for our children. Let’s redefine motherhood together, breaking stereotypes and embracing the journey wholeheartedly. In this beautiful chaos, we find life’s greatest joys and lessons,” said SUGAR Cosmetics CEO & co-founder Vineeta Singh.

The campaign features SUGAR Mousse Muse Lip Cream, which is lusciously creamy, airy-light, and 100% transferproof, delivering intense matte color in a single swipe. This 24-hour wear, full-coverage lip cream encourages the audience to ‘Be Their Own Muse!’

The campaign #AllMomAreGoodMoms garnered 12 lac+ organic views in the first 24 hours across the brand’s social channels.

  • PUMA enlists Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vineeta Singh, and Mary Kom as Women Leaders for WPL Season

PUMA enlists Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vineeta Singh, and Mary Kom as Women Leaders for WPL Season

Mumbai: Continuing its mission to develop the sports ecosystem in India, especially women’s sports, global sports brand PUMA has brought together a unique and dynamic lineup of female icons – celebrated actor & entrepreneur  Kareena Kapoor Khan, India’s accomplished businesswoman and cofounder of SUGAR Cosmetics Vineeta Singh, boxing great MC Mary Kom, fashion designer Masaba Gupta and renowned news anchor Faye D’Souza, to join hands and champion the cause of women’s cricket in the country.

Under this one-of-a-kind association, the selected women leaders as voices of change will be jointly attending a Women’s Premier League (WPL) match in New Delhi on March 10 for a unique Ladies’ Night to support and celebrate our women athletes.

One of the world’s biggest sports brands, PUMA took to social media on Thursday to announce this association and launch the mammoth campaign with a digital film featuring the five women. Narrated by the iconic leaders, the film conceptualised by PUMA revealed that women’s cricket receives only 1/8th the viewership of men’s cricket (as per official digital viewership data of 2023), reflecting the staggering gender bias in the sports ecosystem. Despite huge potential, women’s cricket in India is yet to achieve the desired numbers when it comes to viewership, as only 18 per cent of the women who watch men’s cricket, watch women’s games.

In the digital film, the stars pledged to not only come together to watch the WPL match between Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore at the stadium but also welcome women from all walks of life to join them and enjoy watching the game as a collective over this unique Ladies‘ Night.

Commenting on the occasion, PUMA India managing director Karthik Balagopalan said, “As the country’s leading sports brand, PUMA has been a long-standing driver of change in shattering gender biases and championing women’s sports. Traditionally, women in the country have not been encouraged to watch and embrace sports as men have. Now that is the need of the hour. We are at the turning point to create an equitable sporting landscape and women need to watch women’s sport in order to drive change.”

Karthik added, “As we launch this campaign today, it is heartwarming to have India’s leading women such as Kareena Kapoor Khan, Vineeta Singh, MC Mary Kom, Masaba Gupta and Faye D’Souza, use the power of their voice and platforms to address this cause. Cricket is Everyone’s Game and as a brand, we have been advocating it from the time we onboarded Harmanpreet Kaur with an award-winning social experiment. We are confident now that this remarkable collaboration will further the narrative, level the playing field, increase fandom and create inspiration for the future generation of women athletes.”

PUMA ambassador Kareena Kapoor Khan has been contributing immensely to the world of cinema and is now leveraging her influential voice to make a change in the sports industry.

Commenting on the occasion, Kareena Kapoor Khan said,“ India has seen some significant performances by our female athletes recently but there is so much more scope for it to be brought out with more glory. While cricket is a religion in our country – the spotlight, the viewership, the fanfare – is markedly lesser in women’s cricket when compared to men’s cricket. Personally, cricket as a sport has always been close to my heart, it runs in our family and now we own a team as well so it’s even more special.”

Kareena added, “I’m glad that a brand like PUMA has identified this need and come forward with this stand-out campaign to increase the participation of female viewers in women’s cricket. Let’s come together and join PUMA to bring the much-needed change.”

While WPL fever is beginning to grip the country, PUMA’s attempt to create awareness around the number of female viewers of the game and ignite fandom conversation and mindset change by bringing together women from across industries in a nation-wide movement is a historic move.

“I am honoured to stand alongside formidable women in supporting PUMA’s groundbreaking #CricketIsEveryonesGame campaign at the Women’s Premier League. Being an entrepreneur, I have faced barriers and I understand the power of breaking them. It’s disheartening to witness the vast viewership gap between men’s and women’s cricket, and we are committed to changing that narrative which goes beyond the boundaries of the sports arena; it’s about empowering women, fostering entrepreneurship, and boosting the sports economy,” commented SUGAR Cosmetics cofounder Vineeta Singh.

Masaba Gupta, fashion designer, added, “Female athletes serve as powerful role models for girls and young women. Supporting women’s sports fosters a sense of community and inclusion by bringing people together to celebrate athletic achievements, regardless of gender. Through this campaign with PUMA, we aim to revolutionise women’s cricket and I hope to see many women to be a part of this historic movement.“

The official kit partner of Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals, PUMA actively promotes sporting culture in India and boasts a star-studded lineup of brand ambassadors featuring batting icon Virat Kohli, football star Sunil Chhetri, celebrated boxer MC Mary Kom, and cricketers Harmanpreet Kaur and Mohammed Shami.

The ‘Did Not Quit’ medal is worth more than gold

Sugar Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh shared a valuable lesson for aspiring entrepreneurs—aim for the “did not quit” medal. In her insights, Vineeta stresses the significance of perseverance, highlighting that reaching the finish line is more crucial than finishing first. She encourages entrepreneurs to confront self-doubt, emphasising that worst-case scenarios are often less dire than imagined. Speaking about her journey, Vineeta reminisced, “We (Vineeta and her husband) plotted these worst-case scenarios. Although we know that often it’s not as bad as we are imagining and fearing. For me, the worst case would’ve been losing the last 30 lakh rupees I’d set aside in the bank and start again from square one.” Adding on to the same, she said, “I think self-doubt and a lack of self-confidence is probably the worst kind of rock bottom because there’s nothing that anybody can say that can turn it around for you.”

Frugality fuels value: Make ROI your mantra

boAt CMO and co-founder Aman Gupta shared the mantra of being “fast, fearless, and frugal.” Reflecting on the importance of Return on Investment (ROI), Aman emphasises the necessity of frugality not as a choice but as a fundamental approach to business. Aman’s advice captures the essence of their business model, “Frugality is at the core of our company’s business model. If there is frugality in everything that you do, you’ll be able to create value for stakeholders.” Having worked at legacy companies, before advancing to the forefront of India’s start-up revolution, Aman has many learnings as takeaways. “Start-ups have to learn from legacy companies how to make money, run big companies, and think in a structured manner. Legacy companies need to learn from start-ups how to be nimble,” Aman said. Embracing failures made all the difference, he explained. “I don’t think you need 2-3 successes, you need one. I’ve had five failures but one success has made me who I am. I am a common man, a middle-class guy and I feel that an entrepreneur should be grounded first and foremost. I relate to people who hustle. Nowadays entrepreneurs want the spotlight in the media, and there’s a God-syndrome that kicks in. That’s very bad for the company and the entire ecosystem. Be ready for ups, be ready for downs, but be yourselves.”

Be organised and embrace optimism to balance work and life!

Emcure Pharmaceuticals executive director Namita Thapar, offers a profound perspective on the vital attributes necessary for success, extending far beyond the areas of entrepreneurship. Beyond the commonplace notions of organisation and optimism, Namita delves into the essence of these qualities, asserting that they are indispensable for anyone navigating the complexities of modern life. She asserts, “Not just entrepreneurs, but every person needs to have these. Being organised and optimistic are the bedrock that allows individuals to seamlessly juggle various responsibilities and maintain equilibrium between work and life. In the relentless chaos of everyday life, these qualities become the anchors that foster a sense of calm and resilience.” Namita’s insights resonate as a timeless guide for individuals seeking not only success in their professional endeavours but also a harmonious and composed existence in the face of life’s myriad challenges.

Read people, not just the cards you’re dealt: A poker lesson in early-stage investing

Shaadi.com founder and CEO Anupam Mittal draws inspiration from his entrepreneurial family background. He attributes his risk-taking attitude to his father, who took on economic responsibilities at a young age, and his adventurous spirit to his mother. Drawing parallels between poker and real-time investing, Anupam highlights the importance of understanding people in early-stage investing: “Just like in poker, in real-time investing, you need to read the room. You have to read the other players. In poker, there’s a big fallacy that you’re not playing cards, you’re playing people and the cards just happen to be there. The same thing applies to early-stage investing, you’re trying to understand people.”

Agility over planning: Fall fast, learn faster

Car Dekho CEO and co-founder Amit Jain shared a concise yet powerful lesson: “Fall fast, learn faster.” His words echo the sentiment that in the fast-paced world of business, being an executionist is more valuable than being a strategist: “You can’t take too much time in learning and over-planning; your agility and nimbleness will suffer. It is better to be an executionist rather than a strategist.”

Initially, Amit and his brother decided to start an IT outsourcing company because they were good at coding. Following this, a big disaster struck and it was largely the fault of the brothers. “GirnarSOFT went bankrupt when the stock market crashed in 2009. The Jain brothers had invested close to Rs. 1.5 crore in stock trading and the whole amount was wiped out in 5 days.” Amit said. “We were vetting at 10x leverage, meaning they had positions worth 15 crore rupees. When the Sensex fell from 18,000 to 6,000 – this is something that nobody could ever have imagined. But as an entrepreneur, if you fall down, you get back up again.” He said early-stage learning was very important for him. “Starting and growing a business can be a challenging and difficult process, there will be setbacks and failures along the way and it can be easy to become discouraged or lose motivation. However, persistence allows a founder to stay focused and keep moving even when faced with obstacles.” The company was back on its feet in less than a year and the brothers swore to never dabble in stock trading ever again. Amit learnt never to use money from corporate accounts for such risky funds. He had to show the same agility when he launched CarDekho.

SUGAR Cosmetics raises $50 mn funding led by L Catterton

Mumbai: Omnichannel beauty company, SUGAR Cosmetics, announced on Tuesday the close of its $50 million Series D fundraise led by the Asia fund of L Catterton, global consumer-focused private equity firm. The upsized round saw strong interest from multiple private equity funds with continued participation from existing investors – A91 Partners, Elevation Capital and India Quotient, the company said in a statement.

Sharing the news on LinkedIn, SUGAR Cosmetics CEO Vineeta Singh wrote: Funding isn’t a milestone, but when it also coincides with the biggest month in sales for SUGAR Cosmetics, it’s time to express a ton of gratitude – for our crazy team, our passionate customers and of course the best set of investors ever!

“Welcoming L Catterton the world’s largest consumer focused PE fund to our cap table along with A91 Partners, IndiaQuotient and Elevation Capital. Excited about having another feisty woman on the board, Anjana Sasidharan and can’t wait to build together the most loved beauty brand for young India,” she further added.

The country’s beauty and personal care market has expanded considerably over the past five years, and is expected to reach approximately $21 billion in 2025. SUGAR stated that it has quadrupled its sales over the past five years, adding that it deploys new-age, impact-focused content marketing to develop lasting emotional connections.

The cosmetics company said in a statement that its proliferation of online shopping and the creation of a robust local ecosystem of offline distribution partners has enabled it to attract customers from metros to Tier I and II cities. It added that the rising adoption of online shopping and greater product penetration in secondary cities are also driving the market’s enlargement.

CEO Vineeta Singh said, “At SUGAR, we are devoted to creating innovative products that meticulously cater to the preferences of women with diverse skin tones and types who believe in expressing themselves with high-quality cosmetics and skincare products that complement their inner beauty. L Catterton shares our ethos of truly understanding what matters most to consumers, and my co-founder Kaushik and I are thrilled to welcome the firm as our partner,” further adding that the investor’s brand-building and value creation capabilities will fortify its growth.

L Catterton Asia managing director Anjana Sasidharan said, “We have been impressed with how SUGAR has sustained its momentum of rapid growth across online and offline channels while maintaining healthy operating metrics… With a product-first mindset and deep understanding of their target consumers, SUGAR’s leadership team has established a strong position in India’s cosmetics market, which is at an exciting inflection point of expansion.”

Known for being popular among Gen Z and millennials, the brand aims to further capitalise on its growth momentum in the rapidly growing beauty and personal care market. SUGAR Cosmetics has been scaling its physical presence with over 40,000 retail outlets across over 550 cities.

  • Sugar Cosmetics doesn’t spend moolah on influencer marketing. : Vineeta Singh

Sugar Cosmetics doesn’t spend moolah on influencer marketing. : Vineeta Singh

The 15th edition of Goafest has seen interesting conversations on day one. Sugar Cosmetics co-founder and chief executive officer Vineeta Singh was part of the biggest advertising festival where she spoke about the journey of Sugar Cosmetics, its marketing channels and talked about the popular show The Shark Tank.

In 2015, Sugar Cosmetics was launched as a digital-first brand, which catered to the needs of Indian women. However, the brand has grown exponentially in the last seven years. Mentioning its growth in the market during day one of the Goafest event, Singh said, “We launched Sugar in 2015 and right now almost 60 per cent of consumers from more than 30,000 offline stores continue to discover us online.”

The sugar cosmetics brand has witnessed a transition since it started its business in the market. “We saw a transition happen and we knew this would amplify. Now, more than 90 per cent of women consumers are doing digital shopping,” she added.

In the initial days, the brand experienced many challenges but being digital-first helped them to establish itself as a strong D2C cosmetics brand. “It seemed so difficult to disrupt the Loreals, P&Gs and Unilevers of the world. But in the last few years, digital has allowed us to compete.”

    On unpaid influencer marketing

Sugar Cosmetics has a whopping 2.1 million followers on Instagram, and 60,000 subscribers on Youtube. The brand doesn’t spend a single penny on influencer marketing.

“Consumers have become so smart now and they can easily figure out the fake and paid influencer marketing tactics hence it’s not useful to spend on influencer marketing,” she said.

“We don’t spend on influencer marketing at all, still it is one of the strongest marketing tools for us. We have more than one-thousand influencers associated with us but they are all with us without any fee. They’re the real users of our customers. They promote our brand and in return, we feature them on our platform,” she explained.

The brand is too young for performance marketing

Sugar cosmetics has experimented with performance marketing but the approach didn’t work well for the brand. Sharing the reason behind it, Singh said, “I do feel that just spending as a young brand on performance marketing is not great for brand building.”

Explaining it further, she added, “At the end of the day, you know, the relationship that you have with the consumer, which you get through performance marketing is very transactional.”

She added that the brands are built on deep emotional relationships. So, you need to go beyond the transaction, which is why we feel that the best investment is to woo consumers with a great product, communication, design and packaging.

On being asked, how do they manage to hit that sweet spot between being a premium or affordable product? She reveals that the cosmetic brand does a lot of benchmarking. She added, “Our whole idea is that world-class quality at an affordable price will always be like 40-50 per cent more premium than the largest brands.”

“Despite the price range, we always ensure that when the consumer gets the product in her hand, she feels like she’s getting more than what she paid,” she added.

“At the same time, we invest heavily in the packaging and the entire brand experience is more about a nicely packaged product. Customers are usually ready to pay a slight premium for the room,” she asserted.

On growth in the regional market

While the Indian middle class is a little hesitant when it comes to spending on cosmetic products, Vineeta revealed that the emerging selfie culture has helped them to get a lot of customers from the regional market.

She revealed, “The highest part of our business comes from the Northeastern part of the country, especially West Bengal.”

“In the west, we have a huge consumer base in Punjab and the south, our major business comes from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha,” she added.

She shared, “Looking at the demand in the regional market, we try to create a lot of content in the regional languages as well. The whole northern and central belt gets covered with Hindi. So, we don’t have to create specific content for them but we specifically create a lot of Bengali, Tamil and Telugu content and it works great for us.”
