    Ashutosh moves on from IBN-7, Vinay Tewari takes charge as Managing Editor

    NEW DELHI: Ashutosh has decided to move on from his role as Managing Editor of IBN7, the Network18 Group’s National Hindi News Service. He is passing on the mantle to Vinay Tewari, Managing Editor, CNN-IBN who will now also lead IBN7 editorial operations in the same capacity. In this expanded role, Tewari will also drive network synergies at CNN-IBN and IBN7.

     

    Speaking on this development, B.Sai Kumar, Group CEO, Network18 said “Ashutosh has played a key role in IBN7’s emergence as one of the most credible brands in Hindi news. We thank him for his immense contribution and commitment to the Network. Vinay has led CNN-IBN admirably and in this expanded mandate, we’re confident that he will not only take IBN7 to new heights editorially but also strengthen our general news network further”

    Tewari has over two decades of experience in journalism across reportage, desk, news production and special events coverage. Prior to Network18, he has had stints with the TV Today Network, Times of India and The Pioneer.

    NEW DELHI: The government should restrict itself to penalising inaccuracies in reportage while allowing the television news industry to regulate itself, senior journalists said here today.

    India’s news channels, which had faltered in the Mumbai terror coverage, have worked out stronger internal checks and that seems to be working.

    Speaking at the fourth Indian News Television (NT) Summit here today, MCCS editor Shazi Zaman said that the only way to protect the freedom of the media is self-regulation and that has to come from within. “Neither an organisation nor an editor can impose self-regulation; it is something that everyone has to practice.”

    Commercial considerations, however, have forced news channels to have a high-quotient of entertainment and trivial content.  
         
      “In primetime, news channels have an equal proportion of entertainment and political content. Sports takes up 15 per cent of the primetime space, while issues related to agriculture and development stories get less than a five per cent share,” said CMS director PN Vasanti, who was moderating the session on “Making an Impression”.

    Even staying objective is an arduous task. TV Today Network news director QW Naqvi quoted examples of how all the news channels aired stories on “Delhi getting drowned with floods” which was far beyond the scope of objectivity.

    Naqvi said that with the mushrooming of news channels, quality has taken a hit.
    “With the increase in quantity, the quality has gone down,” he rued.

    NewsX co-promoter and Editor-in-Chief Jehangir S Pocha, however, disagreed. “The Indian media industry needs enough media so that viewers have options and there is no cartelisation. What is needed on the other hand, is stringent laws that can penalise those who disseminate inaccurate information.”

    CNN IBN managing editor Vinay Tewari emphasized on the need to rigorously train the new crop of reporters and journalists.

    The time has arrived for the industry to go back to the basics. “While dealing with serious issues, there is sometimes fear and mistrust, even in legitimate cases,” said Tewari.

    Editors of TV news channels form body to take up content issues

    NEW DELHI: Editors of satellite television news channels today formed a Broadcasters Editors Association (BEA) to “strengthen the values of objective and fair broadcast journalism” and to “protect and promote the freedom of expression.”

    BEA president Shazi Zaman of Star News told indiantelevision.com that the Association was a “forum to deliberate on content issues.” Asked if the BEA would take up the Content Code issue, he said the Association would discuss any threats to freedom of creating content.

    So would the BEA also become a negotiating body with the Government in the manner of the News Broadcasters Association (NBA)? “That would depend on a given situation and on whether the Information and Broadcasting Ministry wished to consult them as a stakeholder,” Zaman explained.

    The editors of television channels feel there is a need to evolve healthy norms, promote training of professional journalists at all levels, ensure dissemination of credible and constructive news content and to protect the right to freedom of expression, whenever threatened.

    There are two Vice-Presidents – Arnab Goswami of Times Now and Pankaj Pachauri of NDTV. ETV’s NK Singh is General Secretary and Sudhir Chaudhary of Live India is the Treasurer.

    Members of Executive Committee are: Ashutosh (IBN-7), Vinay Tewari (CNN IBN), Satish K Singh (Zee), Ajit Anjum (News 24), Vinod Kapri (India TV), Sanjay Bragta (Sahara TV) and Pranjal Sharma (UTVi).

    The BEA will soon develop its own website for direct media-public interaction. It will hold seminars and other modes of two-way interaction to receive feedback from civil society organisations and decision-makers in public domain.
