Unlock 1.0: Despite 20% dip in footfall, Enrich Salon records 1% business hike in Bengaluru

NEW DELHI: Safety, hygiene, and sanitation have become the key identifiers of all businesses as lockdown restrictions are eased across the country. Major hotels, restaurants and salons are taking stringent quality control measures to ensure maximum safety of their clients and teams from the highly contagious Covid2019 virus. The very popular chain of salons, Enrich, which has always been dedicated to providing safe and hygienic services to its clients, has improved its SOPs to serve the changing scenarios.

In an exclusive conversation with Indiantelevision.com Enrich Salon founder Vikram Bhatt shares, “We at Enrich salons have always had been very careful about providing the safest and most hygienic services to our clients. We have always been dedicated to safety, sanitisation, and hygiene and there’s not much of a change there as we proceed into the new normal. For example, we had introduced products like single-use kits, disposable towels and gowns, etc, a few years back.”

However, the salon chain has now further improved its procedures and physical spaces to fit in the changing times. “We have now been working on ensuring even stringent safety measures at our salons. To cite a few examples, the salon doors can now be opened by your feet, we are placing overhead acrylic sheets between the client and the technicians for services like facials, and working hard to reduce the chance of contact at common-touch areas.”

All these measures have been introduced in addition to the standard safety norms decided on by the industry, including sanitisation of the staff and clients and regular infrared checkups.

Some other technologies that Bhatt is investing in for the salons are handheld switches to open store doors and sensory sanitisers. The clients who will visit the salons will be given complimentary kits with sanitisers and switches to open car doors, etc., so the whole consumer experience goes beyond the stores too. They will also be educated to maintain social distancing.

Bhatt shares that he hasn’t struck any particular brand deals to assist in introducing these changes and technologies. “For us, consumer safety is a very serious matter and therefore, I don’t see it as a business proposition. I am dealing closely with local-level manufacturers to source the sanitisers, and masks. There is a strict quality control procedure in place and we don’t purchase handmade masks to make sure they are completely safe and hygienic. For the changes in in-house architecture, our whole team is working to chart out the best plans and working with architects. We are sourcing our own material for acrylic sheets and door fittings. Everything has been personalised with the core aim of keeping our teams and clients completely safe.”

He adds that customers are taking these developments very positively. “We have our Bengaluru stores open for around 15 days now and we have been witnessing around 80 per cent of the regular footfall. However, the customers are seeking more services and our business has been up by one per cent there. In Gujarat, despite us working on alternate days and for restricted hours, the footfall is down by just 35 per cent of the regular, and again service demand is higher.”

Bhatt feels that the business will pick up even better during the festive season starting October and will remain on a positive track through the quarter. “The demands will obviously be lower because of the restrictions on social gatherings like weddings but I am positive that the business will improve a lot by then.”

Bhatt is also working hard to market the many initiatives that the salon is taking these days. The salon chain has introduced its new app with the whole catalogue of services on display. Clients can also use it to book prior appointments with the technicians of their choice.

Apart from that, the salon teams are calling up their clients personally under its “Call is Well” campaign. They are providing personalised on-call assistance, guiding the clients on self-care during the lockdown and also checking-in to see how they’re doing. With 70,000+ calls made by the professionals; the activity was well-received by clients, shared Bhatt. They are also delivering personal care and grooming products to clients’ houses without any additional charges.

Additionally, they are also running impressive B2B awareness campaigns and indulging in public service. Under their “Me to We” campaign, the brand surveyed 15,000+ customers across Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Bangalore, Vadodara, Surat and co-created the stringent hygiene protocol for customer and the salon team safety against Covid2019. The protocols detailed as a part of the campaign communication brings alive necessary rituals for customer and salon team’s safety once business resumes.

  • Vikram Bhatt banks on pay per view for new OTT app

Vikram Bhatt banks on pay per view for new OTT app

MUMBAI: Riding on the growing demand for OTT content is producer Vikram Bhatt who recently launched his app VB on the Web.

Within two days it got 7000 downloads. But Bhatt is being cautious in over anticipating. He says, “It is quite early to judge the performance of app but it has got around 7k downloads in just two days, which is not bad. Let us see what will happen next.”

He said that India has a history of buying tickets, not subscribing, is where the idea emerged. “VB on the Web is like a theatre. We are making more of a theatre than a subscription-based app. Everything is moving online, whether it is a book show or a retail shop or a music shop. We realised that eventually, theatres are also going to move online. VB on the Web is the first theatre. Just like theatre, you buy tickets for whatever you want to watch on the app,” he said.

The model is what he calls as TVoD with a charge of Rs 18 for the entire series/season. Currently, Untouchables is now showing on the app and available for Rs 18, which is around Rs 1.2 per episode. There are other deals offers like season pass in which viewers can watch different web series on the app at a discounted price. For example, one for Rs 18 and two for Rs 30.

Using Abraham Lincoln’s famous quote ‘You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time’ he says that if they get people to pay and give irrelevant content, they won’t return. VB on the Web also gives people the option to watch trailers and then pay for content.

One of the app’s speciality is its availability to producers so they can display their web series directly.

His 2018 line-up for the app includes Twisted 2, Maaya 2, Breaking News and Saharankot. He will not include movies on the platform. “We are now concentrating on original shows and short films of one hour and more are in the pipeline,” he adds.

Bhatt’s daughter Krishna Bhatt is currently working on Maaya 2 series and will be releasing it in March or April this year.

While talking about the investment per show, Bhatt opines that the cost per episode in digital is much more than the cost per episode of any general entertainment channel (GEC) show. Ideally, GEC shows cost between Rs 8-10 lakh per episode. But, according to Bhatt, it takes around Rs 1-1.5 crore to create one entire series, which is between Rs 12-15 lakh per episode.

VB on the Web has tied up with many payment gateway platforms. Airpay has a scheme of watch now and pay later and will soon launch a voucher system with tie ups with general stores.

Bhatt’s content is also available on other OTT platforms like YouTube and Viu, though they are now VB’s online competitors. But, while talking about the content on the other platforms Bhatt says, “YouTube doesn’t have Untouchables, maybe after 3-4 months we will upload it there and I am just a content provider for Viu. The platform has a different set of content that is created specifically for the platform. It has Spotlight, Gehraiyan and Memories and it will be with them only.”

Bhatt said that there is no competition with other platforms because they bunch many things. “I am a theatre, I don’t have something or the other to give every day. But, eventually, I will have 6-7 quality web original releases a month. Like a multiplex, even if five shows are running on the app, people can see the one they like and pay for that only,” he adds.

Whether Bhatt’s theatre will revive audiences will be known soon.

Viu set to launch musical drama spotlight 2 on 26th January

MUMBAI: Viu, the premium video-on-demand platform by Vuclip, a PCCW media company announced the launch of Spotlight 2 making this a franchise of the successful Viu Originals series Spotlight. Presented in association with known writer and director Vikram Bhatt, the theme of the franchise is a running series that captures the rise, fall and resurrection of a music superstar.

An intense and stormy romance between two headstrong people on the opposite ends of the spectrum – Spotlight 2 explores the exasperating reality of being a music celebrity. The series is being directed by Siddhant Sachdeva and will feature popular television actor Karan V Grover along with two dazzling former Miss India’s , Aditi Arya and Ruhi Singh. Focusing on compelling content offered in a contemporary setting, the series will feature more than 7 originally composed tracks brought to life by soulful musicians Harish Sanganay, Ankit Shah and other popular artists. The show goes live on Viu (Both App and The Web) from 26th January 2018.

Based on the buzzing music industry in Mumbai, Spotlight 2 is a story of a talented but flamboyant musician, Vicky, who is on the verge of career-suicide. His hard work and melodious voice helped him climb the ladder of success in the music industry in a very short span of time. But his arrogance, drug addiction and utter disregard for the industry and his fans brings him crashing down. The story is the journey of this lost character with a heart of gold trying to connect back with his music with the help of his ex-girlfriend and how he rises back from the fall.

Speaking on the launch of Spotlight franchise, Viu India, Head of Programming, Manasi Sapre said, “At Viu, we focus on creating compelling content and a viewing experience that captivates our audience and is relatable at the same time. We are able to provide this content because we associate with extremely capable and talented people from all walks of life. We are excited to launch the Spotlight franchise and in the upcoming months, you will see a lot more original shows from Viu that will surely going to excite the audience.”

Speaking on the release of Spotlight 2, Vikram Bhatt says, “When Spotlight 1 was a success, I was confident I will make another one. Spotlight 2 chronicles a musician’s journey as he falls to fame, and then, strives to make a comeback. A story that encapsulates the loneliness that stardom brings along with the glitz and glamour in the life of a superstar. And the story is very apt for the digital platform. Today, the first screen of preference is the cell phone so it was only natural that I present this franchise to the audience on the web.”

The 13 episode series which can be binged watched on 26th January 2018, will mark the launch of the twelfth original series by Viu. With shows like Gehraiyaan, PillA, Pelli Gola and Social, Viu is ceaselessly introducing refreshing concepts combined with gripping scripts and revered talent to ensure an exhilarating viewing experience for their viewers. Since its successful launch in India last year, Viu has witnessed exponential growth in terms of the audience base and engagement.

    Love Games….Viewers wont play!

In Indian cinema, films with sex based themes have been made for a long time now but were initially branded as C grade. Initially, they made their inroads into Hindi cinema as dubbed films with Malayalam films having explicit sex themes dubbed in Hindi. And since their main audience was in the small towns in the interiors, interpolation of footage from porn films was a much used practice. Such films found their target audience mainly during night shows.

But with the interior theatres mostly demolished and the multiplex culture having taken over, sex oriented films are made in the guise of high society comedies or life behind the scenes. Some finesse and glamour quotient is added and Bhatt camp has a knack for making such themes.

Films have grown from swapping car keys or room keys to swapping wives. ‘Love Games’ has a similar theme. Except that the protagonists are not spouses.

Patralekha is young and recently widowed. But she is a nymphomaniac and needs sex regularly. This she finds in her bedmate Gaurav Arora, the son of a wealthy tycoon with a shaky life. Things appear fine but Patralekha is arrogant and lusty. So for her, Gaurav is useful only to fulfill her sexual urge. However, the two decide to seek some adventure.

They decide to play a game which they call Love Games. The idea is to target married couples with the aim of scoring with both of them: Patralekha with the husband and  Gaurav with the wife. Whoever scores first will be the winner while the loser will source the supply of drugs for a week.

In the process of playing this game, Gaurav finds love in Tara Alish Berry, a doctor married to criminal lawyer HitenTejwani. The feelings are mutual between the two as Gaurav is a lonely introvert soul while Tara suffers from an abusive husband. Gaurav does not need to play love games now. This is something Patralekha is not ready to accept. But she is not giving up yet and decides to plan one last love game involving all four of them.

Expectedly, the film has enough lovemaking scenes. However, the story does not deliver a surprise though that would be expected from the filmmakers. The direction has nothing to write home about. Editing needed to be slicker. Dialogue is mundane. Cinematography is good. Musically, a couple of songs sound good. As for acting, all the four main actors seem enthusiastic but the only one who manages to do perform well is Tara.

Love Games lacks face value and poor opening response. Bad reports will only add to its box office prospects.

    Producers: Mahesh Bhatt, Mukesh Bhatt.

    Director: Vikram Bhatt.

Cast: Gaurav Arora, Patralekha, Tara Alish Berry, HitenTejwani.

    Club Dancer…Poor fare.

Club Dancer, the film, involves the name from a name from the renowned film industry family, the Mukherji clan. However, the film looks like an exercise to launch the female lead Nisha Mavani since right from the title to the extensive footage, everything is focused on her. As far as the story goes, the film offers nothing that has not been seen before in films like Satte Pe Satta (1982), Jhutha Sach (1984) et al.

Nisha is a night club dancer in Mumbai whose parents Shakti Kapoor and Zarina Wahab live in Punjab. Not wanting to shock her parents by telling them what she does, she has lied to them that she is happily married and working. But her lie lands her in trouble as Kapoor has a heart attack and plans to arrive in Mumbai for further treatment.

Not wanting her neighbours to talk, she borrows her boss’ bungalow to present it to her parents as her own house. There is a bit of another film here – B R Chopra’s Ittefaq (1969) – as dangerous contract killer Rajbeer Singh walks into her house after killing the local chief minister with the police chasing him. He forces her to provide him shelter at gunpoint. She has no alternative as Singh is a gangster with a violent temper.

When Singh seeks shelter for a period till things cool down, she makes a deal with him: he would act as her husband while her parents are around. That done, the film’s pace slows and it meanders till interval when Singh is seen being shot by the ACP, something Nisha does not know.
NIsha is now a worried woman – with Kapoor’s bypass surgery on the anvil and his ‘son in law’ absent. However, she need not have worried at all since the scriptwriters can always visit the archives, borrow some characters from the past. So, another Singh lookalike emerges from nowhere. While the earlier one sported a beard and an uncouth long hair, this one has none of that and is rather suave.
Nisha fallsin love with the new Singh but he is indifferent. He goes back to Goa where he came from: but most such films have a happy ending.

Borrowing from ideas from films of the 1980s is fine but slaughter their value instead of improving upon them is sacrilege. Scripting is unimaginative. Direction is purely amateurish. Dialogues are pedestrian and the musical score is out of sync. Nisha’s acting is copybook and tutored, Singh has presence but no acting and, what is worse, he tries to be a Sunjay Dutt clone. Zarina is okay but casting Kapoor is a joke.

The others overact in an effort to be noticed.

Club Dancer has been released at limited screens but offers no hope.

    Producer: Shubir Mukerji.
    Director: B Prasad.
Cast: Nisha Mavani, Rajbeer Singh, Shakti Kapoor, Zarina Wahab.

Box office sees ho-hum collections this week

MUMBAI: Almost all movies failed to get the cash registers ringing at the box office this week.

Renowned artistes like Om Puri, Annu Kapoor, Seema Biswas and Satish Kaushik and the co-writer of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron, Ranjit Kapoor, couldn’t help salvage Jai Ho! Democracy. People in India don’t need to be reminded about the shortcomings of the polity.

The other release of the week, Kaagaz Ke Fools, fared even worse. No footfalls worth noting.

There was also another release, better than the other two, but with no face value. Hence it failed to bring in the audience.

Much was expected from Nanak Shah Fakir but the film has not worked. The film barely managed to put together a figure of Rs 90 lakh for its first week.

Mr X, a forced 3-D, falls flat and adds one more disaster to the names of Vikram Bhatt and Emraan Hashmi. The film, which managed a weekend of Rs 12.45 crore, barely manages to add another Rs 6.1 crore over the next four days to end its first week with Rs 18.55 crore.

Margarita With A Straw, released at limited screens, fared okay at multiplexes in metros to end its first week with a collection figure of Rs 3.15 crore.

Ek Paheli Leela collected Rs 2.15 crore in its second week to take its two-week tally to Rs 20.85 crore.

Dharam Sankat Mein collected Rs 1.15 crore in its second week. With this, the film’s two week total stands at Rs 8.75 crore.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshyi takes its three week total to Rs 26.68 after three weeks.
