  • Republic World app to be launched soon, says Arnab Goswami

MUMBAI: The unstoppable Arnab Goswani’s RepublicWorld app is expected to make its appearance in four to seven weeks.

Earlier, Republic TV’s founder editor Arnab Goswami had formally announced the unveiling of its digital cousin –Republicworld.com – on 7 July. This was confirmed by Goswami at session at Vidnet 2017.

The app is aimed at changing the look of news apps by other groups. The design and the look ofrepublicworld.com is very clean and visual heavy with news being segregated under various sections right from general news to politics to sport to lifestyle to tech to entertainment. Visitors can also watch Republic TV’s shows such as Arnab’s Sunday debate, The Anupam Kher show, R.Access, Patriot, and the new one: The Nation Wants to Know.

Furthermore, the reader can customise the language for the site, according to his preferences. Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, English Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, and Odiya are the options given to him.

Republicworld has been able to offer that wide a range of thanks to its partnership with various media houses with eight of them being specifically with digital outlets. The media partners include Business World, OTV, Sambad, News Live, Niyomiya Barta, North East Live, Punjab Kesari, Aajkaal, S Newz, Dainik Bhaskar, Nirmana News, Kashmir Monitor, Lokmat, Vikatan TV, Polimer, Asianetnews.tv, Asianet News, Kannada Prabha, Suvarna News, News Mobile.in; across India and the community partners include tripoto.com, RSJ, LBB.in, yourstory.com, digit.in, and AutoX.

Additionally, what strikes one is the experimentation that is being attempted on republicworld.com in the form of the handful of 360-degree videos that have been put out on the site. Republic’s video content is being streamed in HD with the app slated for a launch in the next three weeks. It will feature long-format live and VoD content in the form of vertical videos, especially created for mobile audience as reported by indiantelevision.com on 30 June.

As Republic TV CEO Vikas Khanchandani had said: “Innovation is very critical to succeed. We were clear that we want to differentiate. Look at the digital success and traditional success stories. Often, one of the primary reasons behind the triumph is technology, which is as important as content. Also, one needs to understand the consumer and the journey across platforms. Therefore, it’s critical to make sure that you are able to draw up a strategy that gives you maximum reach.”

Republicworld.com COO Jay Chauhan had added: “In the digital content space, there is no dominant global player operating out of south Asia, and that’s a big opportunity for us. Republicworld.com is at the intersection of content and technology, so we will keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to constantly engage and improve upon the user experience.”

On the technology front, RepublicWorld has tieups with American and Canadian companies. Pierre Friquet (VR director/ writer/ consultant) from Canada and Ando Shah (founder & CEO at Tesseract) from San Francisco trained its producers for a month to shoot content in VR.

  • How Republic TV is spreading its wings through media partnerships

MUMBAI: Republic TV has been hitting the headlines for its provocative stories ever since its launch and because of its attitude of taking the fight to the enemy camp, no matter how much muscle they may have.  The latest battle that has burst out is that of landing pages on distribution platforms such as DTH and cable TV operators being hijacked by older rivals for promotional feeds.

But, not many know that the Arnab Goswami-helmed news channels has roped in a roster of partners with the aim of beefing up the channel’s news gathering reach. Memorandums of understanding have been signed with more than 20 media outlets, with partnership arrangements  in place with another 10.

The media outlets which have got into bed with Republic TV include: Business World, OTV, Sambad, News Live, Niyomiya Barta, North East Live, Punjab Kesari, Aajkaal, S Newz, Dainik Bhaskar, Nirmana News, Kashmir Monitor, Lokmat, Vikatan TV, Polimer, Asianetnews.tv, Asianet News, Kannada Prabha, Suvarna News, News Mobile.in; across India and the community partners include tripoto.com, RSJ, LBB.in, yourstory.com, digit.in and AutoX.

Says Republic TV editor Niranjan Narayanaswamy: “This is a first of sorts.  No other news channel has had such, and so many  tie-ups.”

For Republic TV, which has 20 news bureaus, 10 DSNG vans and 50 news backpacks, the partnerships, says CEO Vikas Khanchandani, provide it “access into the district, local and regional areas adding to the capability of the networks’seamless exchange of news from the regional and local partners.”

And that’s where the crux lies: the partnerships are in the form of editorial exchange. Republic TV editors and the partners’ teams continuously share news developments with each other, both, on national and regional levels. Editorial meets are held at least thrice a day to decide on stories that need highlighting and following up.

Filters, and verification checks are applied by Republic TV editors to every one of the news breaks before they make their way on air. Each news story is credited to the source partner and even its logo is aired on the TV channel, along with the story. “There is no commercial exchange,” says Khanchandani. “They can also dip into our resources.”

The idea to forge alliances popped up in Arnab’s crafty news brain, he reveals. “The experience he had gathered while working with the Times made him realise that a structure like that was essential for his channel to  be able to get news reports from the grassroots levels,” he explains.

He points out to how these partnerships have helped, effectively referring especially to the news reportage by Republic TV on the raids that the National Investigation Agency carried  out in Kashmir following reports of alleged funding received by separatist groups for carrying out subversive activities in the Valley. “Other channels were sleeping, and we carried the story around at 5 am IST. We had a team five  to six  reporters, and we had gone to 14 locations which were raided,” says Narayanaswamy. “This was only possible because of our partners, and timely inputs from them which helped us strategically.”

He discloses further partnership conversations are under way with four or five international news outlets and many more domestic media outlets are knocking on the company’s doors for alliances as they believe in the brand of Arnab Goswami, and what the channel brings to the table.

“Russia Today, Sri Lanka’s Maharaja TV and Facebook are some of the international deals already in place,” he says.

Khanchandani explains that the tieups are long term in nature, and will continue even as Republic TV expands its news stringers and its bureau presence all over India.

And, many of the partners came out in full strength when Republic TV shouted its viewership dominance of the English news channel genre within the first week of its launch. “It was quite interesting to see all the corporate executives and media owners patting team Arnab on its back for breaking out into the top slot on television,” says a media observer. “This further lent credibility to what he had been talking about for so long.”

  • COMMENT: KNIVES, ARNAB, & THE OLD GUARD OF ENGLISH NEWS

COMMENT: KNIVES, ARNAB, & THE OLD GUARD OF ENGLISH NEWS

MUMBAI: The knives are out. The blades are being flashed around. And those involved in the street fight are drawing blood and bleeding as well. Only difference is that the street fighters are not the ruffian kind, rather they are gents who you watch on the TV screen or dressed up to the T in well pressed suits in boardrooms.

What has got these reasonably well-behaved folks from the English news channel space all het up?

Well, a possible shakeup in the pecking order courtesy a newcomer who likes a round – some say bouts – of fisticuffs – both on air and in the marketplace. Team Republic TV led by editor-owner Arnab Goswami is clear that it wants to own the English new genre – or create a new one combining both Hindi and English – by hook or by crook. After all, all’s fair in love and business isn’t it?

So far he and his CEO Vikas Khanchandani have used tricks which older players have resorted to in the past – multiple LCN distribution on cable TV networks and allegedly pinching content which was recorded when he was in another channel’s employment.

The courts will decide whether Arnab and team are thieves or not; we are not insinuating anything. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will clean up the multiple LCN mess by coming down hard on the errant distribution platform owners who have fallen prey to the smell of money – lots of it.

But the affair Republic TV has thrown up a lot of deeper issues which could be thought about.

When all members of a gymkhana or club have agreed upon a code of conduct, and a new entrant does not adhere to it, then should he not be told to fall in line when the infringement is brought to the establishment’s chairperson’s notice? Could the chairperson give the older members a patient hearing and heed what they have to say?

Older players are an aggrieved lot. Yes, they admit that they have been bad boys in the past. But then they have mended their way, signed a truce and decided to follow the straight and narrow path. Should their old behavior be brought up to excuse that of the new entrant?

And when they decide to protest by not coming to the club, should they be further threatened that they will be banned for longer if they do continue with their picketing?

Of course the chairperson is BARC; the policeman/security is TRAI and the members are the NBA. No second guesses for who the new entrant is – Republic TV.

Would BARC have responded the same way had it been the general entertainment channels which would have raised a hue and cry? Remember what happened to TAM!) After all the entertainment broadcasters contribute about four to five times more to BARC’s purse then do the news channels.

Could broadcasting licence issuance by the ministry of information and broadcasting be linked to well-behaved and well-accepted distribution practices? If some one does not adhere to them, could the licence be suspended?

Should news channels be measured alongside entertainment channels? This modus operandi has forced them to resort to entertainment or outshout-and-out-abuse-your-guest kind of programming (read entertainment again) which seems to appeal to TV soap viewers wanting to have big names of society and public life being squashed like flies on TV. Some have called this the dumbing down or bimbo-isation of news television.

Is there a need for a new viewership currency or data points – which are more specific to the news genre – other than what BARC churns out? Could media agencies and brands resort to qualitative checks of content before signing cheques for ads on TV news channels? The most watched read/watched genre of content on the internet begins with a P. Do all major advertisers place their consumer messaging in that environment?

Could distribution platforms have stricter penalties if they fall for green dollars, violating codes set up by regulators? The DTH guys would not dare to go for multiple LCN placement because what they do immediately comes to the public’s and regulator’s eyes – they are accountable for their quality of service. Fear of punishment can be a big deterrent.

From an editorial perspective, questions are being asked as to how far will Arnab go? And then will the other channels show restraint or will they beat the same path? So far, it appears that some of them played follow-the- newcomer on the multiple LCN issue. Of course, they all did a volte face when the policeman/security guard waved around his night stick.

Whatever be the case, it is quite sure that the NBA English news members will kiss and make up with BARC, the TRAI and each other. Sooner then later. (BARC and NBA are scheduled to meet today to pencil out points that will help them resolve the crisis.)

Who knows Arnab may also find some sense in the NBA and its code of conduct and eat his own words and also house his channel under its protective roof? There was a time when another bespectacled news journalist was labelled the villain of TV news; today he is part of the establishment.

After all, they all need each other. This is despite some media blogs and websites which have sketched the industry’s execs as shaking hands while holding a dagger behind each others’ backs.

Industry old timers are betting that ratings released after week 22 will give a true reflection of what’s going on with English news TV viewership. The three to four weeks’ data prior to that is simply something to be kept aside as an aberration as it will continue to show Republic TV as the numero uno. After that it could well go into a free fall and the older players will continue with their leadership position, is their prediction.

Republic TV executives are clucking that this is wishful thinking. Indian viewers have been waiting for the Arnab school of journalism like the Jews did for manna from heaven in the good old Bible, is what they have voiced. And that their channel will continue to top the charts for the foreseeable future.

Only time will tell which prediction turns out be true.

Until then, we will keep channel surfing with hope in our hearts that we will get to watch some real news.

  • Opalina says Republic leads in Twitter chatter

MUMBAI: You gotta hand it to the debutant Republic TV headed by the aggressive and hyper-on-steroids Arnab Goswami. He, along with the team led by Vikas Khanchandani, seems to be sparing no effort to reinforce the perception that the channel is on course to leadership in the English news channel space.

Starting with dual and multiple placement of his channel on various LCNs on cable TV networks, to now claiming that he is beating all and sundry on Twitter – he and the team at Republic TV are clearly flogging their horses hard.

According to Twitter listening data provided to indiantelevision.com by Opalina Technologies, Republic TV claims that it has managed to generate three times more conversation (aggregated volume for on air hashtags) than English news market leader Times Now on Twitter between 6 and 12 May 2017.

Opalina further explains that Republic has roughly three per cent of the followers as compared to Times Now (241,000 followers as compared to Times Now’s 7.4 million). However, Republic generated 261,000 tweets from its viewers in the period as compared to Times Now’s 86,000 which translates into 1.21 tweets per Republic Twitter follower as compared to .01 tweets per Times Now Twitter follower.

Amongst the hashtags Opalina says that worked are:

    #akhileshinsultsmartyrs, #arvindgate, #arvindgate, #endtripletalaq,
    #gandhipapers, #indiawithkulbhushan, #iskejricorrupt, #lalutapeexposed, #nototripletalaq, #republicstingslashkar, #sunandamurdertapes, #traitorzakirbanned and #zakirconversionfactory.

“We have provided this authenticated and verifiable granular data (breakdown) confirmed by three independent sources,” Opalina co-founder Gaurav Sharma told indiantelevision.com. “The data is in the public domain — which we extracted and summarised,” he said. To a question, Sharma said, “We would stand by our data and ready to discuss with anybody who would dispute this data set.”

Now in the battle which is steaming up in the English news channel genre, one wonders which is the next parameter the channels will resort to assert their supremacy: the number of guests per night on prime time?

“Who knows,” says a long-time news television observer. “News TV has changed its complexion in India and it’s like in no other nation.”
