  • Youth for Digital India: Theme of National Youth Festival starting on 12 Jan

Youth for Digital India: Theme of National Youth Festival starting on 12 Jan

NEW DELHI: ‘Youth for Digital India’ will be the theme of the National Youth Festival commencing this week. The department of youth affairs of the youth affairs and sports ministry organises the festival every year on the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Youth affairs and sports minister Vijay Goel said the Festival from 12 to 16 January at Rohtak in Haryana will also be addressed by the prime minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing during the opening ceremony. Home Minister Rajnath Singh will be the chief guest in the presence of Haryana chief minister Mahohar Lal.

The theme had been chosen keeping in view the most critical and crucial importance of the thrust accorded to the area of Digitalisation and Skill Development by Government of India and realise the proclaimed national goal for ‘Make in India Campaign’ and the PM’s vision of ‘Youth Led Development’.

To achieve the proclaimed national goal, it has been decided to project the various widely acclaimed initiatives of Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, NSDA, NSDC, DGET & MoMSME etc. through Skill Development Exhibition, Lectures and Workshops for the benefit of thousands of participants of the Festival and local youth.

The Mascot of the festival was decided in view of the long standing skewed sex ratio, especially in a state like Haryana. The selection of ‘Lado’ reflects the sensitivity of the state government towards the gender inequality in the state and to bring women at par with men which both the government is committed to combat.

The Festival will also witness a Defence exhibition where various aspects and initiatives of the defence forces, display of equipment, and avenues for recruitment into Armed Forces will be projected for the benefits of thousands of young participant.

A performance by a renowned artist on the life and ideology of Swami Vivekanand on the opening ceremony will be the highlight of the festival. During 13 to 16 January 2017, the Festival will have a variety of cultural programmes (both competitive and non-competitive), Youth Convention, Suvichar (a lecture series), Exhibitions and adventure programmes, Hasya Kavi Sammelan, Haryanavi Nights etc. followed by Cultural Evening by Hansraj Hans and Raftaar.

India being one of the youngest nations in the world with about 65% of its population under the age of 35, Goel expects that this “demographic dividend’ offers a great opportunity for the country to revolutionize itself and achieve the vision of a clean India, a skilled India and most importantly an incredible India . He urges the Youth of the Nation to strive and work endlessly in the process of nation building following the paths shown by Swami Vivekanada.

The delegates from the different states have already started arriving for the event. It is expected that about 5000 youth delegates from different States/UTs will attend.

  • Sports Minister lauds b’casters, other stakeholders in promoting sports

Sports Minister lauds b’casters, other stakeholders in promoting sports

NEW DELHI: India’s Sports Minister Vijay Goel said on Wednesday that digital media broadcasting will play a critical role in bringing about change in sports broadcasting in India but broadcasters must also focus on how sports as a product is delivered to audiences in rural areas so as to popularise the culture of sports.

Addressing the CII Big Picture Summit 2016 here, he said increasing penetration of internet, mobile devices and cheaper data services, especially in rural areas, will prove a game changer in this direction.

Interacting with the panellists on a session on `Sports Broadcasting in India: A Game Changer’, which meandered most of its time period all over the place despite having good representation from various segments of sports broadcasting and marketing, the Sports Minister said media has helped promote sports in the country and has also given a fillip to less popular sports like kabaddi.

A majority of sports leagues have been made possible, including football, kabaddi, wrestling, hockey, tennis and badminton, by persistent efforts by various stakeholders, leading to cascading effects on tourism and infrastructure sectors, Goel, added.

Pointing out that slick packaging of the sports leagues as entertainment by TV channels in India has been a game changer, the Minister said, “This is reflected in more than 450 million viewers of Indian Super League (football) with the most interesting revelation being the Pro Kabaddi League with a viewership of more than 500 million.”

To make sports more catchy and interesting for an average man, some games can also learn few tricks from cricket’s bosses who invented shorter formats of the game to keep the viewer and on-field spectators hooked on, while creating a new business model.

However, the Minister did admit that the sports as a culture is yet to percolate down to every Indian home and to rectify it an all out effort has to be made not only by the government, but also the people of the country.

“Playgrounds in schools and residential areas are being trimmed because of scarce availability of land and such actions don’t help,” Goel said, adding the government is committed to working towards building a culture of sports and improving infrastructure but all stakeholders, including corporate and sponsors, must work towards this common objective.

Catch ’em young: Ministry hunts for sports talent

NEW DELHI: The Sports Ministry is to set up a Talent Search Portal shortly to give a fair opportunity to talented children from every nook and corner of the country to pursue their dreams of achieving excellence in sports. Jolted by the poor performance of India at the Rio Olympics, the ministry had already begun a process to examine India’s performance.

The plan is to target talented children of eight years and above.
Efforts will be made to involve National Sports Federations, corporate houses and other stake-holders in the programme.

Sports Minister Vijay Goel said in a statement that details of the performance and potential of a child including video and photographs could be uploaded on the portal by children, their parents, relatives, teachers and others on the portal. A format will be available on the portal to capture the key details of the child.

After due scrutiny, children with potential will be given an opportunity to appear for a battery of tests which could be conducted at the nearest Sports Authority of India Centre and others. Those who pass will be admitted to the training centres of SAI.

The ministry will also persuade the state governments and others to admit some of such children in their centres. Such talented children who are not able to leave their current places of residence for any reason may be offered a scholarship to help them pursue excellence in sports.

The portal will allow talented children to stake their claim for support including admission to sports training centres from the comforts of their homes and will simplify procedures. It will be particularly beneficial to the disadvantaged sections of the society.
