  • RB India ropes in Vidya Balan as sanitation campaign ambassador

RB India ropes in Vidya Balan as sanitation campaign ambassador

NEW DELHI: Actor Vidya Balan has been named as the brand ambassador of the ‘Changing Behaviour: Creating Sanitation Change Leaders’ campaign launched by RB (erstwhile Reckitt Benckiser) India as part of its nationwide initiative Dettol Banega Swachh India along Pehel and State Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

The project, which aims to make 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar free of open defecation was inaugurated by veteran actor and politician Shatrughan Sinha and former Cabinet Minsiter Jairam Ramesh in Patna and UP Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav in Lucknow along with Balan, who unveiled the mnemonic of the programme.

Other dignitaries present at the event were Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh president and founder Swami Chidanand Saraswati and World Toilet Organization founder Professor Jack Sim.

Balan said, “For the past two years I have dedicated myself towards raising awareness around importance of hygiene and to stop open defecation. I am really proud to be a part of this campaign, which is taking a different route of engaging with stakeholders and creating change leaders at community level to bring about this behaviour change.”

Through the initiative, the programme will reach out and work closely with 500 PRI members, 500 natural and faith based leaders, 500 ASHAs / AWWs and two lakh mothers directly to drive a positive behaviour towards sanitation practices.

Various activities like training of Panchayati Raj Institutions members using toolkit, exposure tours, Sanitation Chaupal, Capacity Building of frontline health workers through game shows and folk shows for sensitising mothers. The progress will be monitored at each step to track the progress and achievements of change leaders will be recognized across these 100 villages in Bihar covering Bhagalpur district and another 100 villages in Uttar Pradesh covering Varanasi, Kannauj and Etawah districts.

RB South Asia regional director Nitish Kapoor said, “We are proud to partner with Pehel and the State Governments of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to launch this initiative, which primarily aims towards driving behaviour change across communities. While we have a dedicated initiative targeting school children, we believe it is equally important to educate and encourage communities to adopt healthier hygiene and sanitation practices to create a positive impact on the society they live in. By the end of this campaign, we aim to help these 200 villages in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to become Open Defecation Free.”

Pehel CEO Anand Madhab added, “To make India achieve its goal of improving sanitation and put an end to open defecation, it is imperative to change mindsets, attitude and behaviour of people towards the issue. Before installing toilets in homes, we need to install toilets in the minds of people. PRI members are local leaders as well as role models in the community and since the key driver for the issue is perception, attitude and behaviour changes we are zeroing in on the most, influential catalysing agent present on ground. Moreover, the project is targeting caregivers (ASHAs/AWWs) and mothers as they play a central role in shaping up the children, the future. The project is the initial step towards changing people’s behaviour towards health, hygiene and sanitation and shall turn into a mega campaign in the near future.”

According to National Sample Survey Office and World Health Organisation, over 600 million Indians have no access to toilets. The proportion is worse in rural India – where 68 per cent of rural households don’t have their own toilets. In order to achieve Open Defecation Free status, the project ‘Changing Behaviour: Creating Sanitation Change Leaders’ will be implemented using a three pronged strategy of environment building; capacity development and changing behaviours.

  • ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’: What kahani?

    ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’: What kahani?

MUMBAI: At times, Vishesh Films, the banner run by Bhatt Brothers, Mahesh and Mukesh, grab some media by tagging a film as based on Mahesh’s personal life. This time, they present Hamari Adhuri Kahani, reportedly based on the life of their father. The film, to avoid the travails of a period movie, is told in contemporary times. But, as a biography or inspired from someone’s personal life, it is a bizarre tale to tell!

Vidya Balan specialises in arranging flowers. It is not clear if she is a florist or works for a hotel, which Emraan Hashmi plans to buy out. He is impressed by the way she does her flower arrangements and  sees her humane side. He is not familiar with such behaviour as he is a selfish go-getter. Emraan is a hospitality business tycoon already owning 108 hotels worldwide. Before adding any new property to his repertoire, Emraan conducts a test as to how the hotel is managed and how good the staff is.

Having checked into the presidential suite of his target hotel, he instructs Vidya to put a ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on his door since he hadn’t slept for 18 hours, he needed rest. Don’t the guests do such chores on their own instead of treating a florist like housekeeping help? Soon there is a fire on the top floor of the hotel close to the presidential suite occupied by Emraan. The staff, all of six or seven people (for such a huge hotel) run out of the hotel including the security personnel whose priority should have been to vacate the guest rooms first.

Vidya has followed the herd of deserters but soon realizes Mr Hotel Tycoon is still in his room catching up on his 18 hour sleep. Vidya runs back in the hotel to alert Emraan and save his life. He seems to be the only guest in the hotel. Impressed by her flowers and her demeanour already, Emraan is overwhelmed by her loyalty and sincerity to her job and responsibilities. He has already fallen in love with her and wants her to join his Dubai hotel property and later wants her for himself.

Vidya is a traditional Indian woman, married to Rajkumar Rao, whose name is tattooed on her forearm. She may say that she would never remove her mangalsutra and it will burn with her on the pyre when she is dead. But, for convenience, she never wears her mangalsutra when on the job. So much for mangalsutra and pyres!

Though Vidya finds Emraan to be a nice man and never rejects his romantic advances, the Indian nari gets the better of her when Emraan proposes. She reveals that she is married, has a husband who is untraceable for the last five years; and she also has a child. She thinks he has deserted her, tells her child he is abroad while the police tell her he is somewhere in Bastar and has become a terrorist. Things get more puzzling as Rajkumar had left from Kolkata for Jharkhand but was traced in Bastar in Central India pointing a gun at some foreign tourist. The police has his picture aiming a pistol at the foreigners.

Finally, convinced that her husband has strayed, Vidya agrees to Emraan’s advances. She falls in love with him. That’s the cue: it is time for Rajkumar to stage a comeback. It does not matter that he is a terrorist and there is a police posse posted right outside his house! His house has been empty for years but he is hiding under a bed, only God and the makers know why! The timing is perfect. Vidya has decided to return to becoming Indian nari again, tells off Emraan and returns home to find Rajkumar under the bed.

Rajkumar, after all, was not a terrorist, but was forced into it, he explains. But, it is too late for him. Vidya has found love for the first time in her life in Emraan. While Rajkumar wants his legally wedded wife back, Emraan loves her so much that he is willing to stake his 108 hotels for her sake (there is a folklore about a shipping tycoon eons back in Western India who owned 99 ships, fell in love and staked his fleet for her sake. Even today, a lot of prime Mumbai property stands in the name of his trust.)

It is unbelievable that the story of Hamari Adhuri Kahani is written by Mahesh Bhatt. It is banal. The proceedings are directionless. Music lacks appeal. Dialogue is pedestrian. Photography is uninspired. Editing this film would be a challenge. Most of the 131 minute run time of the film is between Emraan and Vidya and their romance, which is grossly unconvincing and lacks any sort of chemistry. Rajkumar starts the proceedings but vanishes till after interval (the fact that Vidya is married should have been kept till later when Emraan proposes to her). The fact that two men, a tycoon and a driver, are pining for her love is a bit farfetched. Since there is no scope for showing talent, none of the three oblige. Amala is the only pleasant presence on screen though only for a few minutes. Then there is a Dilton Doily (Archie comics) who plays Emraan’s sidekick whose very presence makes the audience laugh.

Hamari Adhuri Kahani is a major let down coming as it does from Mahesh Bhatt’s penmanship and the rest joining to realise his vision or total lack of it. The box office prospects are very poor.

    Producer: Mukesh Bhatt

    Director: Mohir Suri

Cast: Emraan Hashmi, Vidya Balan, Rajkumar Rao, Amala

  • After ‘Zakhm,’ ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ loosely based Mahesh Bhatt’s parents story

After ‘Zakhm,’ ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ loosely based Mahesh Bhatt’s parents story

NEW DELHI: Hamari Adhuri Kahani directed by Mohit Suri under the banner of Vishesh Films, is the last of a three-film contract between the production house and Fox Star Studios signed in October 2013.

Interestingly, the film being released globally on 12 June is reported to be based on the love story of Mahesh Bhatt’s parents, Nanabhai Bhatt, Shirin Mohammad Ali and his stepmother.

Earlier, Mahesh Bhatt’s Zakhm was also said to be loosely based on the same story.

The film stars Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi in the main roles apart from Rajkummar Rao, Sara Khan, Madhurima Tuli and Amala Akkineni in a cameo appearance.

Written by Mahesh Bhatt along with Shagufta Rafiq, the film has music by Raju Singh and songs by Mithoon, Ami Mishra and Jeet Ganguly.

It is being distributed by Fox Star Studios.

She said, “I must also thank my husband Siddharth (Roy Kapur of Disney) even if he is embarrassed by what I am going to say. And that is that just by being with him, I have become a better person! I would like you to be with me all my life and I have to tell you that I will be with you all your life too!”

“It is truly humbling and overwhelming to receive this honour. What makes this even more special is that I complete ten years in the Hindi film industry this year. • Disney India’s ‘Friends For Change’ recognises stewards of change in Delhi-NCR

Disney India’s ‘Friends For Change’ recognises stewards of change in Delhi-NCR

NEW DELHI: ‘Friends for Change’, an innovative interschool volunteering program, initiated by Disney India in April 2014, witnessed its culmination today amidst much fanfare in the capital city. The event, held at the PHD Chambers of Commerce and Industry had students, teachers and principals from the nine participating schools, government officials, NGOs working in the conservation space and representatives from other schools in attendance. National Award Winning actress Vidya Balan, who was the Guest of Honour for the event, encouraged and congratulated the participating schools.

At the culmination ceremony, all schools showcased their work tracing their journey of transformation in the adopted parks. The students captured their experiences on how they went about planning the activities, understood native species, and undertook soil testing and plantation drives within the gardens. They put up “street plays” to promote awareness and garnered support from the local authorities and communities.

“Conservation is one of the key pillars of our Citizenship initiatives globally as well as in India. Drawing inspiration from the global initiative, we envisaged the ‘Friends for Change’ program for India, centred around the key issue of depleting urban greenery. We believe that today’s children are tomorrow’s future and as part of the programme, we involved them to be the champions of change. The participation and enthusiasm of students, teachers and schools, coupled with the support and encouragement received from local authorities and the community at large, has been phenomenal and motivates us to grow this initiative in the coming years,” said Disney India  managing director Siddharth Roy Kapur.

Post the schools completing their work in December 2014, an eminent jury panel comprising of technical experts, representatives from Disney India and CMS,  visited all the parks and based on the evaluation parameters of infrastructure development, water source utilization, plantation, stakeholder involvement, sustainability and innovation, chose the winners.  Amity International School, Pushp Vihar was announced as the winner of ‘Friends for Change 2014-2015′, for bringing about an astounding change in Sector IV park in Pushp Vihar. Bal Bharati Public School, Brij Vihar, Ghaziabad was announced as the runners-up, for transforming the Tikona Park in Ghaziabad. There was also a Jury Special Mention winner – Delhi Public School Ghaziabad, Meerut Road for adopting Shaheed Smarak Park, a heritage site and modifying it.

“I strongly believe that parks are an integral part of any child’s formative growing years. As a child I have been fortunate to have easy access to parks, which have I believe have made a huge difference in my life. Since children are stewards of change, I think the idea of inculcating in them a sense of responsibility towards the environment through a participative process is bound to be more effective. While on the one hand, Disney’s Friends for Change is a unique initiative to instill qualities of compassion, creativity & conservation amongst kids, it is also a great platform for fostering team work, collaboration and understanding amongst them,” said Balan, who graced the culmination event and felicitated the winning school.
