‘PK’ overtakes ‘Dhoom 3’ as the number one Bollywood movie

MUMBAI: Aamir Khan, one of Bollywood’s stars known for blockbusters like Lagaan, 3 Idiots and Dhoom 3 has officially outdone himself.

The recently released PK, directed by Rajkumar Hirani, has become the highest-grossing Bollywood movie ever making $65.2 million in India, $9.15 million in North America and $1.9 million in Australia at the end of the second week. Clearly, it has proved to be the international market’s top foreign-language title of 2014, accumulating a total of $86.2 million internationally.

The movie, which released on 19 December 2014 and produced by Rajkumar Hirani, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Siddharth Roy Kapur has beaten records previously set by Aamir Khan’s 2013 megahit Dhoom 3. The story sees Khan as an alien who lands in India with a mission to study life on Earth. He ends up asking innocent questions that hold a deep and valuable meaning about the belief system that humans have created to reach God. The film has stirred up some controversy over its faith-based elements.

Khan has no release in this year but having crossed the unprecedented Rs 300 crore mark at the box office, PK has become the biggest blockbuster of all time. His film Ghajini was the first to cross the Rs 100 crore mark while 3 Idiots followed as the first film to make over Rs 200 crore.

Mumbai Film Festival raises Rs 1.5 crore in two days

MUMBAI: Since the launch of a social media campaign to save the Mumbai Film Festival on 28 August, the festival has raised Rs 1.5 crore of the Rs 5 crore budget required. The campaign started after media reported that the festival had been called off due to lack of funds.

The industry at large has pledged their support in ensuring the 16th edition of the Mumbai Film Festival will yet again be marked on the regions cultural and festival calendar.

Well known producer-directors Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Rajkumar Hirani, producers Manish Mundra, Vivek Kajaria and Nilesh Navlakha, director Hansal Mehta and noted author and critic Anupama Chopra amongst numerous others have helped in the funding the film festival.

Speaking on these developments, festival director, Srinivasan Narayan said, “I am extremely happy and humbled with the response that we have been getting from the film industry and film lovers in the city at large. We are delighted and grateful to Cinestaan Film Company, Anand Mahindra, Rohit Khattar and Manish Mundra for their generous contribution. Also we are extremely thankful to Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Anupama Chopra, Vivek Kajaria and others for ensuring that the festival rises like a Phoenix. Today for the first time ever it truly feels that the Mumbai Film Festival belongs to the patrons and lovers of the festival. Talking about the lack of funding in the festival, Cinestaan Film Company chairman Rohit Khattar said, “Anand (Mahindra) & I believe that a festival as important as this should not belong to one sponsor or studio. This is our festival and even the smallest contribution would help fulfill our mission. The Mumbai Film Festival has become an integral part of our cinema heritage and as an industry we need to come together to raise it to new heights and nurture it together.”

  • A tale of a storyteller…

    A tale of a storyteller…

MUMBAI:  At 34, Hetal Adesara has seen it all… Rather, that’s what she would have us believe through her maiden book, ‘Matrimonial Mocktales.’

From a traditional Gujarati family in Jamshdepur, Hetal, left the small town in East India to get away from being hurled into another traditional Gujarati family through the instituition of arranged marriage. She saw many a “suitable boy” and was seen by many of them as and when her parents referred them to her even as she moved to Mumbai.

‘Matrimonial Mocktales’ is Hetal’s take on a few of these meetings. She does mention though that the instances are dramatized for a better reading experience.

After escaping from Tatanagar, Hetal cut her teeth in journalism in indiantelevision.com by starting and editing The Team Players section which profiled young executives in advertising, marketing, broadcast. She then moved on to report on  media, marketing and advertising developments.  Her commitment to work and sharp and clear analyses left an impression on whosoever she interviewed or wrote about in the television, advertising and marketing industries between 2003-2005.

She has explored every opportunity that has come her way over the past decade. Following her stint with indiantelevision.com, she helped co-found businessofcinema.com. From writing about films, she went onto to work as an assistant producer with Vidhu Vinod Chopra on 3 Idiots. She then tried her hand at direction, assisting  director Rohan Sippy on Nautanki Saala apart from working as script supervisor on the same film. More recently, she worked on the IIFA Awards at Tampa Bay as executive producer for television and digital content.

But all along Hetal nursed in her heart a deep desire to pen her own novel. Which this diploma holder in journalism from the Xavier Institute of Communications finally fulfilled last year when she wrote ‘Matrimonial Mocktales’. It took her two years to get the book published. But she finally found a publisher in OM Books International.

‘Matrimonial Mocktales’ revolves around young Rhea, who always wanted a Mills & Boon romance but in the real world, that is probably too much to ask. She is raised in a conservative Sikh family in Jalandhar where it is unthinkable for a girl to remain unmarried at 25, let alone 33. But there she is, single and independent and STILL in search of her Mr Right. At just 15, her parents get her engaged to a 23-year-old boy but that story does not pan out as per plan. Having entered the arena of love on a wrong footing, it takes the better part of her young life to find the right man before a whole lot of wrong ones come and go, even as she tries to make sense of her chaotic world.

Hetal believes many a young girl who has escaped – or is struggling to escape –  from the clutches of arranged marriage will identify with Rhea the character. “Rhea is educated but because of family pressure she goes through what they ask her to do. It could be any other girl from any other small town who has dreams to achieve and be happy with the man she loves, and not the man that’s chosen for her,” she says. “That should resonnate with today’s women.”

Quite a few eyebrows were raised, even among Hetal’s  friends, at her move to quit working and take time off to write her novel. But, resolute young woman that she is, she did not let any of their reservations hold her back.

“As a kid, I loved scribbling poems and dreamt of becoming a writer. God has been kind to me and I am sure there is a lot more in store for me,” says she.

Indeed, Hetal  is already working on the sequel to ‘Matrimonial Mocktales’. “I want to continue to write stories because I think it is an enriching experience,” she adds.

What would she advise young, budding writers out there? “There is a huge market out there which is unexplored in the publishing industry in India. Get the right inspiration and get to penning it down right,” she says.

We at indiantelevision.com wish our former employee and colleague good luck and recommend readers to and pick up a copy of her book for a good weekend read! It will be money well spent!

  • Vidhu Vinod Chopra restoring 7 films

Vidhu Vinod Chopra restoring 7 films

MUMBAI: Vidhu Vinod Chopra has decided to get all his earlier seven films restored, knowing very well that older prints tend to degenerate both visibly and audibly after some point of time.

It is learnt that Chopra was hobnobbing with the idea to restore his films like Sazaye Maut, Khamosh, Parinda, 1942: A Love Story, Kareeb, Mission Kashmir and Parineeta because he feels that the films are looking visually old and the audio too doesn‘t sound half as great as a new film.

The restoration would enhance the longevity of the films. Adding to that, the sound of the films would be done on Dolby 5.1 that has multiple tracks recording for sound. Earlier, films had only monolith (one-track) sound.

“The new 5.1 sound takes the film to a completely different level,” he enthused, eager to share his experience with the restored version. “Take the scene where Jackie Shroff shoots at a chain. Previously everything was in the mono track. But now when the chain moves towards left and right, the sounds from the speakers is something else altogether,” Chopra said in a statement.

It is learnt that the process will cost Chopra about Rs 2.5 to 3 million a film. But he wants all the films restored and delivered to him latest by 27 March.

The reason: the producer-director intends to host a retrospective of 11 of his films including the Munnabhai series and 3 Idiots in April.

  • New Munnabhai to roll in September

New Munnabhai to roll in September

MUMBAI: The third edition of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s super hit comedy series, Munnabhai, will go on the sets this September.

Chopra is almost ready with the new script of Munnabhai Chale Amrika. In his pursuit to make the third edition better than the first two, is taking no chances and working out things according to plans.

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film will have Sanjay Dutt, Arshad Warsi and Boman Irani play pivotal roles.

The earlier two Munnabhai films were titled Munnabhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munnabhai. Both were hits at the box office.

  • 3 Idiots success makes Bollywood eye China as potential market

3 Idiots success makes Bollywood eye China as potential market

MUMBAI: After the successful run of the Aamir Khan-starrer 3 Idiots in China, Bollywood has started eyeing the country as a potential market.

Talking on the subject Vidhu Vinod Chopra quipped, “The Chinese audience identified with the societal and parental pressures on today’s generation of young students seeking success. This has demonstrated that universal themes will cross cultural and linguistic boundaries.”

Chopra also divulged that he was already receiving enquiries from China for his next film, Ferrari Ki Sawaari, slated for release at the end of April.

He hoped the success of 3 Idiots would see more Hindi-language films released in China, where only a handful of foreign films hit the silver screen every year.

Before 3 Idiots, the 2010 Shah Rukh Khan-starrer My Name Is Khan was shown in China.

Indian films were popular in China in the 1940s and 1950s but later ties between the two countries turned sour.

    Third Munnabhai film in offing

MUMBAI: Munnabhai is all set to return to the silver screen after a six-year hiatus in the third edition of the Munnabhai fanchise, it is understood.

Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi will reprise their roles of Munna and Circuit respectively and the movie will be titled Munnabhai Ki Aatma Katha.

Producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, “Yes, Sanjay and Arshad are returning to play Munna and Circuit respectively. Right now, we are developing the script. The film should go on the floors in 2012.”

Some time ago it was being rumoured that Aamir Khan will replace Sanjay Dutt as Munnabhai.

While the first installment of the series titled Munnabhai MBBS released in 2003, the second Lage Raho Munnabhai was released in 2006.
