Will increase ads after sampling phase of Colors Tamil: Ravish Kumar

MUMBAI: Viacom18 has forayed into yet another regional language with the launch of Colors Tamil on 19 February 2018. Within 10 days, the network claims to have garnered positive response from the viewers on social media, advertisers and the agencies.

Viacom18 head-regional entertainment Ravish Kumar, in an interaction with Indiantelevision.com, says that among Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia, Kannada GEC market has more than 30 per cent share of the market share.

Viacom18 already has five general entertainment channels in regional languages under the name Colors, Tamil is the another language that the network is betting on with crossed fingers. The region has a strong TV broadcast market, one of the biggest in the country.

    Edited excerpts:

How has the response been to Colors Tamil?

While it’s early in the day to comment on the feedback, the response from the viewers on social media, advertisers, agencies and the industry per se has been very positive and encouraging. People are appreciating the strong connect, the fabulous production values, the choice of stories and the manner of storytelling. Viewers have gone overboard, online, advising Arya on his endeavor to choose his soulmate. We are keeping our fingers crossed and hoping for the best.

Are you looking at a phased launch of new shows?

We have launched three and a half hours of weekday programming and two hours of weekend programming and we intend to increase those hours basis viewer reaction.

What has been the advertisers’ response post the channel launch?

We have Nippon Paints and India Gate Basmati Rice on Arya’s show (Enga Veetu Mapilla). Nippon Paints has come onboard as channel partners as well. Plenty of advertisers, both national and retail, have shown interest in partnering with us. Currently, we want to optimise the sampling of the channel amongst the viewers and hence are onboarding advertisers in a phased manner. Once we move past the initial launch phase, you will see a lot more ads on the channel.

Is Colors Tamil a part of the base pack of all the DTH operators?

Colors Tamil is free for an introductory period. The channel is widely distributed across key players both on DTH platforms as well as cable operators.

How different is your content compared to the other players in the market?

It’s different on two levels – both at the conceptual and the production levels. We are not only doing shows which are engaging and socially relevant but also bringing cinematic value on television through Alexa camera, top quality sound, enhanced production value and real locations resulting in an unprecedented never-seen-before look and feel.

Of all your regional channels, which language has the highest viewership?

We are a strong No. 1 player in the Kannada GEC market and have more than 30 per cent share of the market pie. The huge surge of advertisers and love from the viewers prompted us to launch a second GEC – Colors SUPER, which is one of the fastest growing and already counted in the top tier channels.

How big is the overall regional GEC market according to you?

The overall regional GEC ad market is at Rs 6100 crore currently.

According to BARC data, the viewership of Marathi GECs witnessed a spurt in the latter half of 2017. Do you think this phenomenon reflects the larger trend of viewers shifting to regional GECs?

India is an ‘and’ market. What we are seeing is an increase in the overall television viewership and this growth is reflected in the increasing affinity to local / regional content. The regional channels have been producing a lot of quality content and hence are attracting a good number of new viewers. Colors Marathi, for instance, introduced quite a few good concepts last year like Ghadge & Suun, Sur nava dhyaas nava, Tumcha saathi kaypan, Radha Prem Rangi Rangli etc. which saw a jump in viewership for us.

What genre of programming is liked by the Tamil audience?

The Tamil viewers are progressive. They look forward to content that resonate with their culture and ethos. They look forward to quality content, something that reflects their strong connect with their land as well as allows them to expand their horizons.

What do you make of Hindi shows being dubbed in regional languages and vice-versa?

In our experience, good content always cuts across markets and languages. If the story has local connect or viewers identify with the content, dubbing does work. Viewers are waiting to discover good content. Great stories will work anywhere in the world. Our endeavor is to provide the viewers larger than life content, whether its originally produced or dubbed. Dubbed South Indian movies work big on our Hindi movie channels. Likewise even good Hindi shows dubbed in South Indian languages have great potential to resonate with the viewers. Our ambition is to make a show in Tamil that will go global.

Is the dubbing and subtitling cost significant?

In order to do quality work, you have to pay a premium. As I’ve said before, some stories are universal and can connect with viewers across languages. The advantage of having a network play is that, based on regional synergies, we can cross-pollinate content. And of-course, the dubbing quality has to be in sync with the premium production quality that we offer.

  • Viacom18 rolls up its sleeves for Tamil market share

Viacom18 rolls up its sleeves for Tamil market share

MUMBAI: Viacom18 has set for itself the task of taking a big bite out of the Tamil general entertainment channel (GEC) market, a stronghold of long-reigning Sun Network. The network is all set to launch its channel Colors Tamil into a large and important entertainment market of India.

Scheduled to go on air on 19 February 2018 in Tamil Nadu, the channel will be the conglomerate’s first foray into the state. Viacom18 already operates general entertainment channels in five regional languages, under the brand name Colors Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali and Odia.

Despite big players emptying their coffers in the Southern Indian market, the region has been strongly captivated by the Sun Network.

Speaking at the launch, Viacom18 Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats says, “After spreading our wings across seven languages, India’s flagship general entertainment brand – Colors is entering the lucrative, fast growing and discerning Tamil entertainment market in line with our stated strategy to drive regional growth aggressively. Our proven ability to break the clutter and disrupt the status quo will help us tell endearing stories to over 20 million TV households in the state and a large global audience in the coming months and years.”

Tamil Nadu is the country’s sixth most populous state as per census 2011 and is among the bigger television content consuming markets, with a per capita daily viewership of 3 hours which is more than that of the Hindi speaking markets which is 2.5 hours. With an estimated base of 1150 advertisers, Tamil Nadu is among the more lucrative broadcast entertainment markets in India.

In order to cater to the market, Viacom18 head of regional entertainment Ravish Kumar reveals the company’s biggest drive is to deliver new and never before seen content to the Tamil audience. “We have invested big in conceptualising programs that are inspiring, innovative, experimental and technically sound. With 22 hours of original content at launch, we are more than confident of Colors Tamil becoming a blockbuster hit here,” he says.

With a robust content strategy developed after thoroughly studying the consumer patterns of the region, Colors Tamil offers several original shows in both the fiction and the non-fiction categories. Foraying into a market with existing predominant players, the channel aims at bringing together a range of shows spanning a diverse variety of entertainment genres catering to all demographics.

Colors Tamil business head Anup Chandrasekharan adds,“Idhu Namma Oru Coloru… the Colors of our land. Our tagline encapsulates our vision of Colors Tamil. It is a platform that aims to entertain, enrich and engage individuals across the length and breadth of the state. Our study of the existing broadcast entertainment market suggests that there is a need gap between what the audience wants to watch and the kind of content that is available to them. Therefore, our focus is on content that is differentiated, thought provoking and socially conscious. Colors Tamil is a promise of optimism, celebration and hope.”

The channel will offer a range of fiction and non-fiction programs spanning from family drama, reality TV, comedy to fantasy to name a few. The four original shows of the channel will set new standards in the industry with its distinct content and sound technology. The network will also remake the famous show Naaagin from the Hindi GEC Colors for the new Colors Tamil. Naagin has been a huge hit property of the network.

At launch, Colors Tamil will be available in all leading cable networks catering to an estimated 3.5 million homes in Greater Chennai through SCV, TCCL among others and 11 million homes in the rest of Tamil Nadu through Tamil Nadu Arasu Corporation.

Furthermore, the channel will be available on all DTH platforms including Sun Direct, Tata Sky, Airtel, Dish TV & Videocon d2h reaching out to 5.5 million households. Additionally, the entire content library of Colors Tamil will also be available digitally on the network’s OTT platform – Voot.

As part of its fiction lineup, the channel has curated three striking shows that portray strong women protagonists breaking the shackles of the society. Shot in native locations of Tamil Nadu with top-notch equipment, the shows are set to offer a movie-like experience to the viewers.

Offering a refreshing break from the common soap operas, Velunachi is an inspirational story of young girl who transforms herself into a strong woman carrying her father’s lineage in Silambattam.

Sivagami show is a transforming tale of courage of a young woman tackling conflicts in society to bring up her daughter as a successful IPS officer. The story is set in rural Tamil Nadu with nativity and rustic aims to create a positive change in mindset among people.

Another show, Perazhagi, is an uplifting drama that breaks the stereotype around skin colour featuring a small girl who fights against all odds to become a celebrity.

Created as the flagship show of Colors Tamil, the reality show Enge Veetu Maapilai will feature the hunt for the ideal match for brand ambassador & Kollywood superstar Arya. Spanning over 40 episodes, the show will telecast the search for the heartthrob’s perfect match.

Catering to the young ones, Colors Super Kids is a one of a kind talent show for children, offering them an equal and well-deserved platform to showcase their talents without the concept of competing against each other.

  • Broadcasters, DPOs oppose TV channel auction proposal

Broadcasters, DPOs oppose TV channel auction proposal

NEW DELHI: Most big and small broadcasting companies owning and operating TV channels in India, along with distribution platforms, have categorically opposed any move by the government to auction satellite TV channels as a complete package similar to FM radio channels.

Leading the opposition charge is the broadcasting sector’s domestic industry body Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF). Decrying having similar regulatory approach of auction for radio and satellite TV broadcasting as “completely undesirable,” IBF said auctions would not only breach certain privileges granted under Fundamental Rights by the Indian Constitution but would also go against the ethos of international commitments made by India to organisations such as the ITU.

“Costs are likely to increase manifold [if the government went ahead with auctioning of satellite TV channels] because of lack of supply of ISRO launched geo-stationary satellites. This would squeeze out smaller operators resulting in artificial entry barriers. In fact, the auction of TV licenses will also have a cascading effect on larger corporations, which may also have to rationalise the number of channels that they run as the cost of operating all the channels will spiral, making the business unviable,” IBF highlighted the economic downside of the proposal in its response to a TRAI consultation paper exploring the feasibility—or the non-feasibility—of auction of satellite TV channels and other related issues.

Weighing in with the IBF argument against auctioning of satellite TV channels, Star India, probably India’s biggest broadcasting company in terms of revenue, said successful broadcasting of channels required coordinated use of the uplinking space spectrum, satellite transponder capacity and downlinking space spectrum, which cannot be “auctioned together” as they are not controlled by the same entity or even the Indian government.

Many TV channels targeting India’s 183 million TV universe uplink to ITU-coordinated foreign satellites owing to Indian space agency ISRO’s inability to keep pace with the growing demand for satellite transponder capacity, apart from other commercial considerations.

“The introduction of an auction route for channels would necessarily require the auction of the spectrum bundled with the satellite transponder allocation [and] complexity of [the] process would not justify the negligible revenue that may be anticipated [by the government/Ministry of Information and Broadcasting] from such auction,” Star India said in its submission to TRAI, adding to artificially limit a commodity, satellite spectrum that is not scarce, would be a “brazen attempt at maximising revenue” by the government that would ultimately harm the media and entertainment industry of the country.

According to the Subhash Chandra family-controlled Zee, TRAI was “erroneously” attempting to treat broadcasters such as Zee, Star India, Sony, Viacom18, BBC and Discovery as entities subject to the Indian Telegraph Act [that, incidentally, was drafted sometime in the late 19th century].

“Under the uplinking and downlinking guidelines notified by MIB, an up-linking/downlinking ‘permission’ is granted to a TV channel by MIB and not any ‘licence’ [is given] as sought to be suggested by TRAI in the present CP [consultation paper]. Permission is granted under the executive instructions/guidelines notified by MIB and not under any statute. These executive instructions/guidelines do not have any statutory basis/source. Thus, any attempt to levy revenue-based licence fee on broadcasters on the premise that they are licencee[s] under the Indian Telegraph Act would not only be fallacious, but also without any legal sanction,” Zee noted while punching legal holes in the government thinking.

While Sony Pictures Networks India opined imposition of additional fees for satellite spectrum usage and mandating use of Indian satellites would have “unforeseen outcomes” owing to “economic pressures,” Times Network said the auction model may be suitable for the digital terrestrial TV transmission (DTT) when introduced but not for satellite TV.

Viacom18, operating over a dozen TV channels and also a studio business, felt that the operation of satellites for broadcasting cannot be compared with operations of FM radio channels simply because spectrum for the latter (radio FM) is limited and rare as against satellite spectrum that is in abundance and would continue to increase over a period of time with the increase in the number of satellites.

“Auction is appropriate only for such natural and rare public resources as for FM [radio],” the joint venture between US’ Viacom and Reliance Industries-controlled TV18 Broadcast submitted.

In its independent submission, TV18/Network18 (both entities controlled by Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries), while giving international examples of countries such as Greece and Thailand where auctioning of TV channels had failed to get desired results, said auctioning will have an economic impact on the broadcast business.

Pointing out that an auction would “unduly increase the cost of grant of permissions and the cost of permits”, costs that would have to be passed on to end subscribers/viewers making content expensive all across the distribution chain, TV18 exhorted the government to “focus on increasing the number of satellites,” which will increase competition and not “create entry barriers” that will impede competition.

Comparatively, smaller broadcasters operating on tight budget and limited distribution budgets such as Odisha TV Network said it was “not in favour of auctions.” Global companies such as BBC Global News submitted that TV channels were inherently different from FM radio broadcasting and such a move could “adversely impact small broadcasters” like BBC as it would amount to an anti-competitive move favouring some big players. Channels like News24, too, echoed similar sentiments.

Distribution platform IMCL was of the opinion it was not possible to auction uplink spectrum “like in the case of FM [radio].” DTH player Dish TV added that “discrimination and/or restrictions in the licencing conditions” should be done away with and there should be no differentiation between usage of Indian and foreign satellites. Players should be given the right to choose as to what was best for their services, it added. Similar comments came from other DPOs like DEN.

Some other industry organisations such as Broadband India Forum and Hong Kong-headquartered CASBAA, too, stated that auctioning of satellite TV channels was not feasible.

CASBAA, while supporting an open policy regarding satellite capacity usage for downlink and uplink, said restricting the use of foreign satellites just so an auction can be conducted would be a “most undesirable” outcome.

“The Indian broadcasting sector has flourished in no small part because of the ample and competitive supply of satellite capacity–both foreign and domestic–made available for broadcasting purposes under the existing policy guidelines. Indeed, investments in foreign satellite capacity over India have contributed mightily to the growth in this sector to date. An attempt to restrict use of foreign satellites now would cause immeasurable harm to this currently ‘vibrant’ sector,” the Asian pay TV and satellite industry organisation said. Similar sentiments were expressed by other international organisations such as GVF, ASPCC and ESOA.

    TV18 to increase Viacom18 stake to 51%

MUMBAI: TV18 will take operational control of Viacom18 Media Pvt Ltd (Viacom18), the joint venture partners in Viacom18, TV18 Broadcast and Viacom Inc, announced today. TV18 will raise its stake to 51 per cent by acquiring 1 per cent of Viacom18’s equity from Viacom Inc for a cash consideration of Rs 127 crore (USD 20 million). The brands and content licence agreement between Viacom Inc and Viacom18 will also get extended by 10 years.

The partners believe that in the fast-evolving media and entertainment landscape in India, TV18 can drive value-addition and synergies across the multi-platform group comprising broadcast, digital, filmed and experiential entertainment and media businesses, the official release stated. Viacom continues to hold 49 per cent in Viacom18 and shares TV18’s vision for scalability and enhanced efficiency at Viacom18.

Network18 chairman Adil Zainulbhai said, “The transaction further enables our vision for Viacom18 to accentuate its focus on excellence and integration in the broadcast and digital space. The entertainment powerhouse continues to be bolstered by Viacom’s global expertise in content creation and curation, along with Network18 group and affiliates’ strength across the media and telecom value chain.”

“Viacom18 is one of the fastest growing companies in India’s dynamic media and technology sector and, as a result of this transaction, we believe it will be even better positioned for accelerated growth through closer integration and alignment with the Network 18 Group and its affiliates, including Jio,” Viacom International Media Networks CEO David Lynn said. “Viacom remains strongly committed to our Viacom18 joint venture with the Network 18 Group and we are retaining the vast majority of our ownership stake in the company. We’re delighted to extend our licencing deal with Viacom18 and see clear potential to expand it in live events and recreation, in line with our growing global presence in these lines of business.”

“We turned 10 last year and our growth journey has been exciting to say the least. None of this would have been possible without the support and commitment of both our partners. This development will allow us to leverage deeper synergies with Jio as we enter our next growth phase. As India’s youngest full-play media organisation, we remain committed to winning the hearts of our audiences across all our on-air, on-line, in-store, in-theatre and on-ground businesses and enriching the digital life of every Indian,” added Viacom18 group CEO Sudhanshu Vats.

Viacom18 started out as a broadcast business with three channels–MTV, Nickelodeon and Vh1–in 2007. Today, the broadcaster has 44 television channels across 80 countries in six languages. It has also diversified into five lines of business, spawning broadcast, digital, films, merchandise and live events. The company reported total revenue of Rs 3,040 crore in 2016-17, charting 40-fold growth in topline since inception.

Viacom18, DSport join hands for simulcast of Nidahas Trophy

MUMBAI: In what may be a sign of things to come, Viacom 18 has struck a deal with DSport to live simulcast the Nidahas Trophy, a tri-nation series tournament featuring India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

DSport, Discovery’s sports channel, had acquired the exclusive India broadcast rights of Nidahas Trophy 2018 last week. In an industry-first initiative, the broadcaster has joined hands with Viacom18 to live telecast the series. While DSport will telecast English commentary, Viacom18-owned mass entertainment channels Rishtey Cineplex and Cineplex HD will feature Hindi commentary for the tournament. Rishtey Cineplex reaches out to maximum number of viewers across any Hindi Movie channel with a reach of 460 Mn+ individual viewers across India (urban and rural) and therefore will add more eyeballs to the international T20 series scheduled to begin on 6 March 2018. Cineplex HD will further add to the enhanced viewer base by taking the tourney to a premium Hindi content consumer base.

Explaining the rationale behind the partnership, Viacom18 group CEO Sudhanshu Vats said, “Sports broadcasting is a bit of a business conundrum–it represents a sizeable opportunity but the cost of entry tends to be prohibitive. It has been a white space that we have continuously been evaluating and this association with DSPORT to air the NIDAHAS tri series provides us with a fertile testing ground. As we endeavor to test waters with our very first broadcast of an international sporting property, what better than a cricket tri series involving the national team.”

This tri-nation internationalT20 tournament will follow a round robin format with all the three teams playing each other twice, and the top two progressing to the final to be played on 18 March 2018. All the matches will be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“The future belongs to collaborative broadcasting and this association between Discovery’s DSPORT and Viacom18’s Rishtey Cineplex is a pioneering initiative that seeks to broaden the horizon of sports broadcasting in India,” said Viacom18 COO Raj Nayak. “Cricket is much more than a sport in this country – it is an emotion. With this collaboration, we will be taking this emotion to more than ~460mn additional viewers in India.”

Commenting on the partnership, DSport business head TS Panesar said, “In a first of its kind arrangement we are delighted to partner with Viacom18’s Rishtey Cineplex and Cineplex HD to bring Hindi telecast of the Nidahas Trophy to millions of fans in India. The Nidahas Trophy celebrates 70 years of Sri Lankan Independence and as such holds a special significance and we expect a keenly fought contest between India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.”
