TDSAT prohibits Scod18 from relaying IndiaCast channels

MUMBAI: Scod18 Networking Pvt Ltd (Scod18), a multi-system operator (MSO), has been restrained by the Telecom Disputes Settlement Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) from taking signals of IndiaCast Media Distribution Pvt Ltd’s (IndiaCast) channels from any other operator.

The TDSAT has further ordered that the MSO cannot alienate or deal with its movable and immovable properties without the prior permission of the tribunal. The distribution company has also sought recovery of dues from Scod18 to the tune of Rs 2 crore.

Accepting IndiaCast’s plea, the tribunal passed an order stating, “Pass an ad-interim ex parte order restraining the respondent from receiving signals of broadcaster’s channels from any other operator or service provider transferring or alienating or dealing with its movable and immovable properties without the prior permission of this tribunal.”

IndiaCast has disconnected the signals of its channels to the MSO and it understands that the MSO might take signals of its channels from other platforms. Therefore, the company has taken a legal cover to restrain the MSO from indulging in piracy.

The interim order will be applicable till the next date of hearing, which is 8 May. IndiaCast is the content monetisation arm of the TV18 and Viacom18 network. IndiaCast has a bouquet of 51 channels, including nine in HD  spanning across genres—general entertainment, kids, news, music, infotainment, and movies—in India.

IndiaCast had pressed for an interim relief but the TDSAT stated that the same will be considered after giving an opportunity of filing a reply to the MSO.

Scod18 has been granted four weeks’ time for its reply. The rejoinder, if any, may be filed within one week thereafter.

Saugato Bhowmik may replace Gandhi as Viacom18 Digital COO

MUMBAI: Soon after the news of Gaurav Gandhi leaving Viacom18 was announced last week, speculation was rife about who would take the hot seat to lead the company’s digital arm Viacom18 Digital Ventures, under which Voot operates.

A source close to the development has told Indiatelevision.com that Saugato Bhowmik is the top choice among those gunning for the spot of COO.

Although the company is still said to be considering various profiles, the management seems to have narrowed down its choice to Bhowmik.

Bhowmik currently serves as the executive vice president and business head of consumer products and integrated network solutions at Viacom18 leading two key businesses, which are tasked to build the network’s brands outside the broadcast and movie studio space.

He joined Viacom18 in 2013 and has a rich experience and understanding of consumer behaviour and insights. Bhowmik began his career at Dabur India as the area sales manager in 2002 and moved to Hindustan Unilever in 2004 where he refined his consumer-marketing skills in strategic brand management roles for key brands for India as well as globally.

Gandhi quit Viacom18 after eight years. Launched in 2016, Voot is Viacom’s digital service that offers content in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada and Bengali.

BARC week 10: Nidahas Trophy catapults Rishtey Cineplex to the top

MUMBAI: The newest entrant in the country’s sports broadcasting world–Dsport–has hit a homerun by making it to the second position on the top-five list of Broadcast Audience Research Council’s (BARC) all-India data thanks to its inaugural cricket property. The Discovery India channel acquired the exclusive India broadcast rights of Nidahas Trophy 2018, a tri-nation international T20 tournament involving India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, in January 2018. DD Sports, telecasting the same tournament, grabbed the first position.

After winning the rights, the broadcaster joined hands with Viacom18-owned mass entertainment channels Rishtey Cineplex and Cineplex HD for the Hindi commentary.

Rishtey Cineplex climbed four rungs to the first position in the Hindi-speaking market (HSM) with 545,931 impressions (000s) sum in week 10 of BARC data as compared with 399,725 impressions (000s) sum in the week before. In the rural market, the channel garnered 369,001 impressions (000s) sum and was at the top position. In the urban market, the channel entered the top-five list coming in at the fourth position with 176,930 impressions (000s) sum.

Rishtey Cineplex has managed to match pubcaster DD Sports’ viewership leaving behind Dsport in the urban plus rural (U+R) category. Rishtey Cineplex garnered 10,022 impressions (000s) sum and DD Sports managed to secure 10,117 impressions (000s) sum.

Viacom18 CEO Sudhanshu Vats said that the association with Dsport for the telecast of the Nidahas Trophy had provided Viacom18 with a fertile testing ground for ascertaining the performance of sports on the network.

Being the first choice of rural people, DD Sports has climbed to the numero uno position with 144,541 impressions (000s) sum. Dsport, meanwhile, has managed to climb to the second position for the first time with 130,982 impressions (000s) sum. Live telecast of India versus Sri Lanka garnered 7,263 impressions (000s) sum whereas India versus Bangladesh got 6,627 impressions (000s) sum of according to BARC data.

Star Sports First was at the third position with 94,097 impressions (000s) sum for week 10. Sony Ten 1 dropped three spots and was at the fourth position with 89,983 impressions (000s) sum followed by Star Sports 1 Hindi at the fifth position with 34,928 impressions (000s) sum.

“The future belongs to collaborative broadcasting and this association between Dsport and Rishtey Cineplex is a pioneering initiative that seeks to broaden the horizon of sports broadcasting in India,” said Viacom18 COO Raj Nayak earlier this year.

The channels are likely to carry the viewership momentum in week 11 of BARC data since the tournament concludes on Sunday and, therefore, the matches will still have a bearing on the ratings for the following week.

  • M&E stakeholders need to collaborate for growth: Sudhanshu Vats

M&E stakeholders need to collaborate for growth: Sudhanshu Vats

MUMBAI: If the Indian media and entertainment (M&E) sector, poised to be Rs 2 trillion industry by 2020, is to be a force multiplier and up the present growth trajectory, then all the stakeholders, including the government, need to collaborate sinking differences, according to Viacom18 Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats

“We need to learn to collaborate as an industry. We need to collaborate with competitors at times so collaboration and competition can coexist. The scale of industry is such that innovation and disruption is bigger than what any single one of us can achieve. It is only when we form partnerships [and] collaborate that we can achieve greater heights,” Vats on Monday said delivering a keynote address, themed ‘Media and Entertainment: The Force Multiplier At The Heart Of Society’, at the ongoing FICCI-Frames 2018 here.

Pointing out that the M&E sector has deep links with other sectors of the economy, Vats asked and answered, “Where is it that you first heard about the mobile phone in your hands? Why do you even use it? How did you come across the shampoo you used this morning? What did you do in the car while driving to this conference? Well for most of you, the answer will be some form of media, be it print, or digital or electronic.”

Deconstructing his observations in terms of numbers, Vats explained that the M&E sector has added over Rs 50,000 crore in output in the last five years, has a revenue size of Rs 130,000-135,000 crore and the direct or indirect induced benefits to the economy of the total industry size is Rs 450,000 crore with a contribution of 2.8 per cent to the country’s GDP. This apart, the industry also employed, across both formal and informal sectors, 1-1.2 million people, contributing significantly to India’s job creation.

Having excited the audience with some hard data, Vats added, “Did you know that by several estimates, video streaming accounts for over 50 per cent of total mobile internet usage in India? This is expected to touch 75 per cent over the next three years. Today itself, the contribution of data to telco revenue stands at 20-25 per cent. Imagine what will happen when virtual reality (VR) becomes a commonplace phenomenon?”

According to Vats, while presently the media sector employed around 1.5 million people directly and indirectly, it has the potential to add another million over the next five years, which might seem a small number —  given the total workforce of 460 million — but these are jobs that were non-routine, least likely to be automated and, more importantly, most of these jobs will need ‘on-the-job training’ — meaning that these jobs don’t need to wait for the country’s education infrastructure to catch up.

But, given the M&E industry’s role as a force multiplier, how much steam is left? Because if the engine starts to weaken, it is obvious that its role as a force too will reduce. Vats thinks the answer to the question need not be a pessimistic one. Why?

Vats listed the reasons for growth opportunities: (i) M&E industry’s ad-spend to GDP ratio was still 0.4 per cent compared to 1 per cent in developed economies (ii) the total sector is one per cent of GDP compared to 2.5 per cent or so in developed economies and (iii) while Indian TV audience (780 million) is bigger than that of the total population of Europe (745 million), India has only 64 per cent penetration with 183 million TV households. “With electrification progressing at a blistering pace, imagine future growth,” he reasoned.

Though the opportunities are there, can the M&E industry pull it off? Certainly yes, if all the stakeholders sunk their differences and learnt to collaborate without being skeptical of newer techs and data-driven findings instead of always asking the government and regulator for help, which they must provide being facilitators and further adding to ease of doing business, Vats said exhorting the industry to rise to the challenges as one.

“We need to become comfortable with data because we need to bring in more transparency, authenticity and objectivity to our data. If a new-age entrepreneur comes to us, we are skeptical of his idea or technology. If someone approaches us with a new way of measuring, say, our audiences, we are dismissive. We need to change this attitude. We need to change this mindset,” Vats reasoned, adding that Viacom18 was doing its own little bits, including starting a pan-network engagement programme with startups where the company partners with validation. The initiative is called Vstep or the Viacom18 Startup Engagement Programme.

Urging the Indian society to loosen up a bit — learning to “laugh at ourselves” — Vats signed off saying: “Let us, the media and entertainment industry, be the force multiplier for growth, the force multiplier for change, the force multiplier for jobs and, above all, the force multiplier for the good of society.”

TV18 completes acquisition of Viacom shares

MUMBAI: TV18 is now officially in control of the Viacom18 joint venture in which the US partner, Viacom Inc (Viacom), was a majority holder till now with 51 per cent. In an announcement to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), it said that the formalities of the transfer of 1 per cent shares from Viacom’s paid up equity capital to TV18 had been successfully completed.

A statement to the BSE said, “With this acquisition, the company has acquired control and now holds 51 per cent of the equity share capital of Viacom18.”

In January, the companies had announced the decision to transfer power in the hands of TV18 for $20 million (Rs 127 crore). In the meantime, deals for content licensing and brands between Viacom and Viacom18 also got extended by a decade.

Holding more authority, TV18 can understand and execute strategies in the evolving digital India market. It can decide to drop or add new business verticals that can push up the company’s profitability.

While announcing the plan to shift the power, Viacom International Media Networks CEO David Lynn also pointed out that Viacom18’s association with Network18 would help accelerate growth and even added Jio as one of the catalysts.

Viacom18 Group CEO Sudhanshu Vats said, “This development will allow us to leverage deeper synergies with Jio as we enter our next growth phase.” Undoubtedly, Vats meant the presence of the network in the digital sphere with Voot. Calling the company a ‘full play media organisation’, Vats stated that the focus will be on ‘enriching the digital life of every Indian’. Jio is likely to play a major role in boosting Viacom18’s presence and reach through its 160 million subscribers.
