  • JioCinema doubles subscribers Q-on-Q to 16 million in Q2 FY2025

JioCinema doubles subscribers Q-on-Q to 16 million in Q2 FY2025

MUMBAI: Reliance group’s Viacom18’s streamer JioCinema is sprinting ahead at a rapid clip. The subscription-oriented OTT, according to Network18 Media’s filings with the Bombay stock exchange,  doubled its subscriber base in Q2  FY 2025 quarter over quarter. The sub base at the end of 30 September 2024 stood at an impressive 16 million.

What worked in its favour, the company says, are the  affordable monthly subscription plans of Rs 29 per month and Rs 89 per month  (family plan) and an expanding content catalogue and the live sports that were streamed on it.

The third season of digital exclusive Bigg Boss OTT was the top driver of subscription and watch-time. Bigg Boss Marathi replicated its success on TV, becoming the third most-watched show on the platform. Network non-fiction shows like Laughter Chefs, Khatron Ke Khiladi, and Splitsvilla were complemented by digital exclusive shows like Shekhar Home and Pill.

The international content catalogue on JioCinema was amongst the top drivers of subscriber acquisition during the quarter. Kung Fu Panda 4, Dune 2, Godzilla x Kong, and Fall Guy were some of the popular international shows and movies added on the platform during the quarter.

Viacom18’s coverage of Paris Olympics 2024 delivered the highest ever viewership of the event with 170+ million viewers and 15 billion minutes of watch-time across JioCinema and Sports 18. JioCinema had up to 20 concurrent live streams spanning 17 dedicated feeds for sports and three curated streams for India matches and other high viewer interest events. A studio panel comprising eminent sports personalities and experts delivered surround content, bringing an unparalleled coverage of the event.

A combination of comprehensive coverage and a growing interest in non-cricket sports led to high engagement of over 50 mins a day on JioCinema. The sports network also aired India vs Bangladesh cricket test series, Indian Super League and other popular sports events, cementing its position as the home of sports.

  • Uday Shankar & what’s driving the Star-Disney-Viacom18 merger

Uday Shankar & what’s driving the Star-Disney-Viacom18 merger

MUMBAI: Uday Shankar has been lying low for quite a while, avoiding mixing and sharing his wisdom with journalists – a breed from which he emerged  – as he goes about reshaping a new media and entertainment powerhouse coming out of the merger of Disney Star with Reliance Industries’ Viacom18.

But the incoming vice-chair took some time out to speak to McKinsey.com. Speaking to the consulting firm’s insights section online, Uday, highlighted what drove the merger.

“..India is one of the few markets where television still has reasonably good health, within that, a lot of it is changing. Connected TVs and handheld devices have become very substantial and mainstream,” he said. “You’re competing with global players: Google and Meta. Most of digital-advertising revenue goes to these two companies. So you need to pivot; you need to create a business. We saw an opportunity to leverage our inherent strengths and make that strategic pivot. That’s the primary rationale for the merger.”

He added that the streaming business also requires innovation and disruption with AVoD and SVoD models having limited revenue potential in India.

“While there are a lot of people today who are willing to pay for content and who are interesting or important to advertisers, there are also a lot of people who are not relevant for either of these models,” explained Uday. “You need to create unique or native monetisation models to create value from that base. Whoever manages to create new revenue streams definitely has an advantage. So I think all these opportunities exist.”

Uday then went on to say he’s learnt from every leader he has worked with, from Rupert, James, Lachlan and Mukesh Ambani who he currently continues to work closely with.

“The first thing is they’re all very clear about why they’re doing what they’re doing—and that clarity is very helpful,” he elucidated “They all play to win. And they all have a high threshold for failure. They’re patient, and they’re not willing to give up. And then, they all work on trust. They all take their bets on people. And once they trust people, they’re willing to back them up. And I learned that myself. I take my bets on people; I trust them once they earn my trust. And I back them up.”

  • How MakeMyTrip leveraged Bigg Boss integration to boost homestay popularity

How MakeMyTrip leveraged Bigg Boss integration to boost homestay popularity

Mumbai: In India, where entertainment dominates, the boundaries between content and commerce have blurred, leading to strategic brand integrations that capture audience attention. Outside of sports, reality television has emerged as a powerful platform for brands to connect with millions due to its mass appeal. This trend aligns with the global shift away from traditional advertising toward immersive brand experiences. Brands are now moving beyond ads to become part of the stories unfolding on screen. Partnerships with major entertainment properties, such as Bigg Boss, Kaun Banega Crorepati, and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, provide valuable opportunities for visibility and engagement.

A notable example of this trend is MakeMyTrip’s partnership with Bigg Boss season 17, centered around the campaign ‘Bigg Boss ka Ghar, MakeMyTrip Par’. This initiative invited viewers to enter a contest for a stay in the Bigg Boss house, integrating the brand into the show’s narrative. Contestants logged onto the MakeMyTrip app to pitch their freedom to Bigg Boss, creating excitement among the audience. To enhance engagement, MakeMyTrip also launched billboards and advertisements, driving further interaction. Virtual tours of the Bigg Boss house, hosted by contestants, added another layer of connection. The campaign culminated with fifteen winners staying in the Bigg Boss house, forging a strong link between MakeMyTrip and its audience.

The collaboration had an immediate and measurable impact. The contest led to a 100 per cent increase in clicks on the homestay icon within the MakeMyTrip app, driven by engaging app animations. Homestay searches rose by 15 per cent, indicating higher booking intent. The campaign also resulted in a 12x increase in social media followers, boosted by over 500 organic posts. Audience engagement was high, with more than 130,000 contest entries, demonstrating the campaign’s strong appeal.

MakeMyTrip CMO & chief business officer Raj Rishi Singh said, “Our partnership with Bigg Boss last year significantly elevated the awareness of MakeMyTrip’s Homestays and Villas offerings. By integrating a unique experience where fans could immerse themselves in the iconic Bigg Boss house, we tapped into a loyal and engaged audience. This innovative association not only strengthened our brand’s connection with viewers but also showcased the diverse, high-quality homestay options we offer, driving both awareness and engagement across India.”

Viacom18 head – network sales, Mahesh Shetty spoke about the collaboration, “Our collaboration with MakeMyTrip on Bigg Boss demonstrates how reality TV can seamlessly elevate brand engagement. By embedding MakeMyTrip’s offerings directly into the viewer experience, we created an opportunity for the audience to not just watch, but actively participate with the brand. This unique integration helped MakeMyTrip stand out in a crowded market, driving visibility and building stronger connections with a diverse and engaged audience. It’s a prime example of how immersive content can unlock new avenues for brand growth and resonance across platforms.”

The MakeMyTrip and Bigg Boss collaboration highlights how strategic partnerships with reality TV shows can boost brand growth and engagement. As traditional ads lose impact, brands that integrate naturally within content and offer added value gain loyalty, visibility, and customer engagement. MakeMyTrip’s Bigg Boss Season 17 partnership set a strong example, demonstrating that content-driven marketing is key to future brand engagement.

  • Kevin Vaz speaks on the ‘Future of Video in India’ at APOS 2024

Kevin Vaz speaks on the ‘Future of Video in India’ at APOS 2024

Mumbai: At APOS 2024 in Bali, Indonesia, Viacom18’s CEO of broadcast entertainment Kevin Vaz shared his insights on the future of video in India.

The global media and entertainment industry is advancing at a rapid pace, and India is no exception. In fact, India is at the cusp of an entertainment revolution, driven by technology, diverse content, and evolving consumer behaviour. And at the forefront of this revolution, leading the charge, is Viacom18. Over the last year, we’ve made significant strides not only in expanding our reach but also in reshaping how audiences consume content across the country. It’s been an exhilarating ride, and we’re just getting started.

When I look back at the past year, I’m proud to say it’s been nothing short of transformative for us. Our first priority was assembling a world-class team with the vision, drive, and grit to execute on our ambitious goals. With that foundation in place, we made targeted investments in key brands like Colors, Colors Kannada, and Colors Marathi, and the results speak for themselves. Colors has grown by 35 per cent in less than a year, getting closer to securing the top spot in the industry. Nickelodeon, our kids’ portfolio leader, just celebrated a decade as the number one brand in its category. And in the regional space, Colors Kannada reigned as the top channel during primetime for three months, while Colors Marathi saw an astonishing 150% growth in the last three months alone, putting it in fierce competition for the second spot.

In the non-fiction space, we’ve continued to lead with iconic properties like Bigg Boss and Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi, and we’ve added to that list with Laughter Chefs, India’s biggest comedy reality show to date. This homegrown success is a testament to our ability to create world-class content tailored to local tastes. For smaller screens and connected TVs, we launched JC Premium, bringing Hollywood’s best, top-rated web series, and 24/7 live streams of our reality shows to Indian households.

Looking at consumption trends in India, it’s clear that audiences are more dynamic than ever before. There’s this notion that viewers are either glued to their TV sets or completely immersed in their phones, but the reality is far more fluid. A show like Bigg Boss is watched on Colors at its scheduled time, then consumed further on JioCinema’s 24-hour live feed, and even discussed on social media. This multi-screen experience is where the future of entertainment lies.

India’s daily media consumption—combining both large and small screens—currently stands much lower than developed markets, but the potential for growth is immense. Large screens currently have around 60% penetration compared to 85-90% in other major markets, giving us significant headroom for growth. India is an ‘AND’ market, where both TV and digital are thriving in tandem, creating endless opportunities for content creators and distributors.

Family entertainment has always been at the core of what we do, and we’ve ensured that our content seamlessly transitions between TV and digital. Bigg Boss, for example, saw 25% of its viewership last season coming from digital platforms, while some of our fiction shows are experiencing significant digital engagement alongside their TV broadcasts. It’s all about offering the consumer flexibility and choice.

One of the most exciting trends we’re witnessing is the rise of local language content. India’s cultural and linguistic diversity is unparalleled—22 official languages and over 58 socio-cultural regions. This diversity presents both a challenge and an opportunity. Audiences today crave authenticity; they want stories that resonate with their own experiences. We are already serving content in 10 languages and aim to eventually cover all 22, making local content not just the present but the future of entertainment in India.

When it comes to advertisers, we are uniquely positioned to deliver value across both large and small screens. Television continues to be a powerful medium, with a reach of around 900 million people in India. Given that over 95% of households have just one TV, families gather to watch together, creating shared experiences and deeper emotional connections. TV advertising remains one of the most effective ways to reach multiple demographics in one go—parents, kids, grandparents—all engaged in a single viewing experience.

On the digital front, Viacom18 is home to the largest curated content platform in India, with a monthly active user base of around 300 million. This creates a safe, immersive environment for brands to connect with consumers, especially during drops of prime-time shows or live streaming of sports events, when engagement is at its highest. Whether it’s long-term brand building or short-term performance goals, our value proposition for advertisers is unparalleled.

Viacom18 is at the forefront of the entertainment revolution in India – across large screens, small screens, and every format in between. We have the scale, expertise and experience to deliver results. The future of entertainment in India is bright, and we’re proud to be at the forefront of it.

Viacom18 unveils ‘The Neighbour’s Plea’ campaign film for India vs Bangladesh test series

Mumbai: Viacom18 unveiled its new campaign film for the ongoing two-Test match series against Bangladesh. Titled, ‘The Neighbour’s Plea’, the film cheekily builds on the recent success that Bangladesh saw on their tour to Pakistan as they made history in clean sweeping the Test series against the hosts in their backyard, and uses it to set the tone for the current Test series.

Viacom18’s film takes off from the point where Pakistan is reeling from the after-effects of the loss and now backs India in a bid to see them defeat Bangladesh and avenge them. The dominant mood running across the nation is one of frustration and anger from the defeat of Bangladesh. Shot in ‘talking heads’ style, the film sees different Pakistani fans, Pakistani cricket experts, students, club cricketers, etc. pleading with India to win the ongoing series and unconditionally pledge their support.
