    Bengali sensation Rii to star in Q and Nikon’s ‘Ludo’

    MUMBAI: Acclaimed Bengali actress Rii will be starring in Q and Nikon’s next film ‘Ludo’. She had earlier acted in films like ‘Gandu’, ‘Bishh’ and ‘Love in India’, which were also directed by Q. She also won the best actress award at Osian’s Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema for her movie ‘Cosmic Sex’.

    Rii plays a character yet to be seen on the Indian screens in ‘Ludo’. The film is being made under the banner of Overdose Joint, Q’s production house, a progressive art platform making original films, music and design and is co-produced by Idyabooster and Starfire Movies.

    ‘Ludo’ is the latest by director Q, who made the critically acclaimed and controversial film ‘Gandu’, which was banned from a theatrical release in India but became a cult phenomenon, both in India and across the globe. Q’s films have always found festival and critical appreciation internationally, with BBC calling him the ‘most subversive Indian filmmaker’. His latest film, ‘Tasher Desh’, premiered in Rome, and has been received very well.

     

    Nikon is Q’s collaborator and editor, an alumnus of SRFTI and Emily Carr, Vancouver. He has edited ‘Tasher Desh’, ‘Bishh’ and ‘Love in India’.

    NEW DELHI: Famed director Q, who made the critically acclaimed and controversial film ‘Gandu’ which was banned from a theatrical release in India but later became a cult phenomenon across the globe, is now joining Nikon to make a fantasy thriller ‘Ludo’.

     Q’s films have always been festival bound and have won critical appreciation internationally. Not only this, BBC also calls him the ‘most subversive Indian filmmaker’. His latest film,’Tasher Desh’, premiered in Rome and was received very well. Nikon is Q’s collaborator and editor, an alumnus of SRFTI and Emily Carr, Vancouver. He has edited ‘Tasher Desh’, ‘Bishh’ and ‘Love in India.’ 

    ‘Ludo’ is being made under the banner of OverdoseJoint, Q’s production house, a progressive art platform making original films, music and design and is co-produced by Idyabooster and Starfire Movies.

    The movie stars the vivacious and beautiful actress Rii. Idyabooster, founded by Nandini Mansinghka, is a new venture that focuses on curating films and other creative entertainment projects for investors who are new to this class of investments. The company has a whole new approach to investing, enabling investors to commit smaller amounts, co-invest with other people and reduce the risk by creating a portfolio of films and creative projects they invest in.

    Starfire Movies, based in Delhi, has produced and funded ‘Kajarya’ (co-produced with OverdoseJoint and globally premiered in Dubai in December 2013) and Bengali films like ‘Khashi Katha’ (with Naseeruddin Shah) releasing in May 2014 and ‘King’ (in post-production) in Kolkata. They have also been involved in several other co-productions, animation and international documentary projects.

    This collaboration (of ‘Ludo’) is an eclectic mix of individuals who bring something unique to the table and promise an explosive and spine-chilling movie experience to the audience.

    Film on HIV/AIDS gets award at Vancouver Documentary Film Festival

    NEW DELHI: Fire in the Blood directed by Dylan Mohan Gray has won the 2013 DOXA Feature Documentary Award, the main prize at the DOXA Documentary Film Festival, which concluded recently in Vancouver.
     
    "Fire in the Blood is truly outstanding. The real story of the struggle to make HIV and AIDS drugs available and affordable for the world’s poor, is nothing like the headlines we have read. It is both a heart-breaking and a heart-warming story all in the same film and it is elevated by exceptional access to captivating moments of deep humanity and emotion", the jury said.
     
    It added: "In exploring the macrocosm of big industry and the microcosm of individual people Fire in the Blood makes clear that we are all responsible for this crisis and there is something we can do to influence change. It is a wakeup call and a call to action for all of us to take back our health care rights from the pharmaceutical companies who only care about their bottom lines, and our world leaders who allow big pharma to let millions die in the name of profit."
     
    Fire in the Blood also received the Justice Matters Award at the 27th Washington DC International Film Festival last month.
     
    The film will be screened in Geneva next month in conjunction with the World Health Assembly (WHA), with events and panels sponsored by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) and UNAIDS. There will also be a screening and panel discussion hosted by the Royal Society of Medicine in London on 28 May.

    MUMBAI: Bollywood heartthrobs Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma will join veteran actor Boman Irani in hosting the first Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) in Vancouver.

    The TOIFA will take place on 6 April.

    The two heartthrobs have been pitted together in Anurag Kashyap‘s forthcoming film Bombay Velvet.

    Irani was most recently seen as a mean but popular lawyer in ‘Jolly LLB‘.

    MUMBAI: The Times of India Group has announced the first edition of the Times of India Film Awards (TOIFA) that honors and recognises excellence in Hindi cinema at foreign locations.

    Felicitating the best from the field of acting, direction, music, choreography and scripting, the awards will be held annually at diverse international destinations. In its first year, TOIFA has partnered with British Columbia to hold the awards in Vancouver, Canada, from 4-6 April.

    TOIFA will rival International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA), an initiative of Wizcraft International Entertainment. IIFA is being held every year since 2000.

    Times of India Group MD Vineet Jain said, “Times of India Film Awards is yet another step in getting closer to millions of Indians across the globe.     The event will be conceptualised, scripted, directed and managed by event management company The Cineyug Group of Companies.

    The evening will see performances by celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Abhishek Bachchan, Anushka Sharma and Priyanka Chopra.

    MUMBAI: Clint Eastwood‘s daughter Francesca has got her first major role in Final Girl that is to be directed by her boyfriend Tyler Shields.
    The 18-year-old is now set to embark on a tough training regimen to prepare for the shoot that is set to begin in Vancouver, Canada later this year.
    “I am beyond excited to be working with Abigail Breslin and it is such a dream to make a movie with Tyler Shields. His vision for this film is going to blow people away. I start my fight training next week and we start shooting in November. I can‘t wait for everyone to see Final Girl!,” she has reportedly said.
    Sheilds has already signed actress Abigail Breslin for the thriller that is about a group of teenage boys who pick on the wrong girl as their last victim to initiate into their pack, it is understood.
    Francesca previously appeared on the big screen alongside her father in the 1999 made film True Crime.

    Disney’s Buena Vista Games to acquire Climax Racing

    MUMBAI: Buena Vista Games, Inc. (BVG), the interactive entertainment affiliate of The Walt Disney Company has announced the acquisition of video games company Climax Racing.

    The addition of Climax Racing allows BVG to create triple-A racing titles that meet the highest standards for creativity and quality. Terms of the deal are not being disclosed. The deal is expected to close in early October, informs an official release.

    Buena Vista Games senior vice president and general manager Graham Hopper said, “The acquisition of Climax Racing aligns perfectly with our strategic and geographic goals by allowing us to both reach into new genres and new markets for creative talent. Adding Climax Racing to our creative family will provide an additional catalyst for our continued growth in the video games market.”

    UK based Climax Racing is a known developer of racing games, including its critically-acclaimed work on such franchises as MotoGP and ATV Offroad Fury. The studio and its products have won or been nominated for awards, including winning four IGN Best of Show awards at E3 2006.

    “As a premier, award-winning studio that has created some of the best racing titles of all time, Climax Racing is an ideal component of BVG’s expanding portfolio of development talent,” said Climax founder and chief executive officer Karl Jeffery.

    The studio is of both strategic and geographic importance to BVG as it becomes the third internal studio, and the first in Europe, that BVG has added to its development capacity. BVG currently operates development studios in Vancouver, British Columbia (Propaganda Games), and Salt Lake City, Utah (Avalanche Software), adds the release.

    Tony Beckwith, co-founder of the studio, has been named vice president and general manager of Climax Racing as it continues its creative direction under BVG.

    “The Walt Disney Company holds one of the largest and most exciting portfolios of intellectual property in the world, and through BVG, we look forward to having access to the company’s deep resources in the video games space to continue creating remarkable interactive entertainment,” said Beckwith. “This promises to be a mutually beneficial relationship and we believe that together we will make outstanding games for the next generation and beyond.”
