  • Analysis: Top South Indian news channels in 2018

Analysis: Top South Indian news channels in 2018

BENGALURU: South Indians consumed more news  of the top 5 channels in their local languages than their Hindi speaking brethren of top 5 Hindi News channels  in their respective markets in 2018. Amongst the four south Indian languages spoken in six states, Malayalis’ (Denizens of Kerala, language Malayalam) consumed more news per household (HH) and per capita on the top 5 Malayama News channels than their South Indian brethren in 2018.  Overall, Kannadigas’ (People from Karnataka, language Kannada) consumed more volume of news in terms of average weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018 on the top 5 Kannada News channels than the consumers of news on top 5 channels in the other three South Indian languages. The four South Indian languages are (in alphabetical order) Kannada, Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu.

It may be noted that this analysis is based on Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC) weekly data of top 5 News channels for each of the four South Indian languages and Hindi News as per the following demographics:

Kannada News: Karnataka  Urban and Rural or (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
Malayalam News: Kerala (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
Tamil News: Tamil Nadu/Puducherry (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
Telugu News: Andhra Pradesh or AP/Telangana (U+R): NCCS All: 2+ Individuals
Hindi News in HSM Markets (U+R): NCCS All 15+ Individuals

To arrive at the per capita viewership or consumption, the author has considered the 52 week average number divided by the respective population of the respective market as per BARC India, Households and Individuals Universe Estimate – 2018 (BARC Population Estimates 2018). BARC considers HSM or Hindi Speaking Market as All India without the four South Indian markets. Hence, the author has subtracted the NCCS 15+ population of the four South Indian markets from the All India NCCS 15+ population to arrive at the HSM 15+ population numbers. In the case of per capita consumption for South India, the author has taken the sum of average weekly impressions of the top 5 channels for each language and then added the four sums to arrive at the total average weekly impressions for South India, this total average has then been divided by the 2+ population figures for each of the four languages/six states as per BARC Population Estimates 2018.

Overall, across their four languages South Indians averaged 2.32 impressions per person per week of news  on the top 5 News channels in their respective language and territories in 2018 as compared to just 0.99 impressions per person per week of Hindi news on the top 5 Hindi News channels consumed in the HSM (U+R).  The combined average weekly news consumption of the top 5 news channels in each of the four South Indian languages was 6,00,473.88 thousand (000s) weekly impressions in their respective markets as compared to 4,92,359.25 (000s) weekly impressions viewership of the top 5 Hindi News in the HSM (U+R) market.

Please refer to the figure below:

Across the 52 weeks of 2018, viewership ratings of South Indian News channels was different when compared to viewership of Hindi News Channels. Even within the four South Indian languages, viewership ratings across weeks trended differently. South Indian news viewership in the respective South Indian markets peaked during weeks 32 and 33 of 2018 . In week 32, floods in Kerala and the death of the Tamil leader K Karunanidhi on 8 August 2018 spiked viewership in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Like the HSM, Television news viewership peaked in week 33 in the South Indian markets also, and was relatively higher than HSM news viewership of top News channels in the respective markets.  Week 33 of 2018 was the week when Indians celebrated Independence day on 15 August and the former Indian premier Atal Bihari Vajpayee passed away the next day of 16 August. Please refer to the figure below

    South Indian News channels Trends

As mentioned above, per capita local television Malayalam news consumption in Kerala is the highest amongst the four languages, while in terms of absolute viewership Kannada News in Karnataka scores the most average weekly impressions. The figure below is a scaled part of the figure above.

    Kannada News channels in Karnataka

There were four news channels that appeared in BARC’s list of top 5 Kannada News channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018 – they were TV9 Kannada, Public TV, Suvarna News 24×7 and News18 Kananda. As in the case of Kannada News, Malayalam News viewership in Kerala also peaked in the face of local events – on 8 August 2018 ( during week 32 of 2018) Kerala was hit by some of the worst floods in its history due to excessive rainfall. In its neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, one of India’s senior most politicians – K Karunanidi had passed away the previous day.  These events led to the surge in Malayalam News television ratings during the week. Please refer to the figure below.

Tami News channels in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Two channels appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Tamil channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018. They were Poliimer News with average weekly impressions of 42,361.37 (000s) followed by Thanthi TV with 24,498.6 (000s) average weekly impressions during the 52 weeks of 2018.

Four other channels – Puthiya Thalaimurai (50 weeks), Sun News (41 weeks), News18 Tamil Nadu (27 weeks) and Seithigal (1 week) also appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of Top 5 Tamil News channels during the 52 weeks of 2018.

Like its Kannada and Malayalam news counterparts, Tamil News ratings peaked in Tamil Nadu/Puducherry in week 32 of 2018. On 7 August 2018 (week 32 of 2018) one of India’s senior most politicians and a former chief minister of the state – K Karunanidi had passed away. Also, floods in the neighbouring state of Kerala could have added to the viewership during week 32 of 2018. Please refer to the figure below.

Telugu News channels in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana

Like all the other South Indian counterparts, Telugu News channels viewership in Andhra Pradesh/Telangana spiked upwards for local events – the biggest spike coming in week 50 of 2018, the week in which results of the assembly elections in Telangana were announced.

Four channels appeared in BARC’s weekly lists of top 5 Telugu News channels during all the 52 weeks of 2018. The conclusions drawn by the author in this paper are hence limited to the data that is disseminated by BARC India in the public domain. In deference to court, BARC to release suspended channels’ data

MUMBAI: Country’s TV audience ratings agency Broadcast Audience Research Council of India (BARC), in deference to Bombay High Court, has decided to renew audience measurement and release of data of all the three TV news channels it had suspended for four weeks on 24 November, 2016.

However, BARC would continue to pursue the cases in the court.

While one of the suspended channels, India News, had moved the court earlier managing to get interim relief, the case relating to V6 News was taken up by the court on Tuesday.

BARC India CEO Partho Dasgupta stated, “BARC India respects ad-interim order of (the) court, and is following through on implementing the same with respect to its subscriber data with effect from this week. As the matter remains sub-judice, it would not be appropriate to say anything beyond this at the moment.”

Though no official confirmation is available, but BARC India is expected to convey the same to all its subscribers on Wednesday assuring them that the ratings organisation would work towards further streamlining its on-ground processes so as to plug loopholes, if any, and work towards a transparent and more robust data eco-system.

Towards the end of November, BARC India, in an unprecedented move, had informed its subscribers that it was suspending for four weeks the ratings of India News, TV9 Telegu and V6 News owing to suspected mala fide practices. Subsequently, all the three TV channels moved courts within a space of few days with India News leading the way.

Speaking to Indiantelevision.com, Subir Kumar, who represented V6 News in the high court on 13 December, 2016, said that BARC India had partially argued the case on 9 December 2016 and had sought more time from the court. On the next hearing (13 December) BARC told the court that it was withdrawing the suspension of ratings review of V6 News. As a result of this development, BARC India would release data relating to V6 in the normal course for the fourth week (the last week in BARC’s purported suspension), the lawyer added.

Pointing out that his client would appeal in the court seeking release of the ratings review of the previous three weeks by BARC as well, Kumar said that V6 News had also filed an injunction seeking damages of Rs 11 crore (Rs. 110 million) for allegedly “damaging the reputation and goodwill of V6 channel.”

Reacting to the development, V6 News assistant editor Murali Krishna conveyed to Indiantelevision.com a message from V6 News chief editor and CEO Ravi Ankam. The message read: “We believe in highest values of journalism and grown with public support. We always said our ratings are consistent and fair. We approached the court of law for the truth to come out. We believe that BARC was misguided. We hope BARC will correct its system to protect the interests of popular channels like V6 News.”

The Bombay HC on 6 December, 2016 had stayed the suspension of ratings review of India News even as BARC hinted at continuing its crusade. TV9, which too, reportedly, has subsequently got a favourable interim order from the court, could not be reached for an official reaction despite phone calls on Tuesday.

According to the Ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB), there are nearly 800 satellite channels in India, of which about half are news channels. With an already crowded market, an increasingly loud general election has added to the number of news channels mushrooming across the country.

Andhra Pradesh, which till recently was in turmoil because of the imminent bifurcation into Telangana and Seemandhra, is no exception. Counted as the state with the highest number of satellite TV channels, the last one year has seen newer additions (V6 News, Express News, 10TV and ETV3) to the existing list (ETV2, TV9, TV5, NTV, Mahaa News, HMTV, Studio N, Raj News Telugu, I News, 4TV, Sakshi TV, Gemini News, 4TV, Vanita TV, ETV Urdu, CVR News, ABN Andhra Jyoti, the now shut Zee 24 Gantalu).

It is not as if the number of TV viewing homes is on the rise but that doesn’t deter these newbies from popping up. Indeed, AP has the highest number of cable TV homes in India at 15 per cent. At a national level, channels are deploying cost-cutting measures but in AP, newer channels are being spawned. So, what is the survival strategy of these channels? Apparently, they are all backed by political muscle though no politician will openly come out in support of them. More than anything, it is about party views being propagated through the media, sometimes openly sometimes subtly.

Only two of the 20-odd channels – TV9 and TV5 – have major market share, followed by the likes of ETV, NTV and Sakshi TV. According to local people, YSR Congress funds Sakshi TV, NTV and TV5, while V6 is backed by six politicians affiliated to Congress.  Rumours are that ideologically, HMTV seems pro-Telangana though may not be backed by any party while ABN Andhra Jyoti is pro-Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Let’s not forget Gemini News of the Sun group under Kalanidhi Maran who has the backing of DMK leader M Karunanidhi. The office of Telangana News channel is actually located within the headquarters of the party office in Hyderabad. Now that’s called risk! According to the public, only TV9, Raj News Telugu, CVR News and the newly launched Express TV are apparently among the channels without political bias.

Again, owning a channel may be a power trip but running it is an altogether different ballgame. Approximately Rs 1.2 to Rs 1.5 crore per month is required to run a channel in the state and this includes cost of infrastructure and technology and staff salaries. On the other hand, revenues don’t exceed Rs 70 lakh and typically, a channel takes nearly three years to break even (under good financial condition), which means an initial investment of Rs 40 crore is required.

25 per cent of the Rs 1,000 crore advertisement market is from news channels. Of which, the top five news channels make up for Rs 200 crore while the smaller channels scramble for the left over Rs 50 crore. The ones with high viewership such as TV9, sources say, command up to Rs 2,500 to Rs 3,000 for a 10 sec slot. On the other hand, the not-so-high-on-viewership channels get just about Rs 600 for every 10 sec. Channels with political backing rarely have to bother about ad revenue since money will flow in anyway…

In such a scenario, it is not surprising that rumours of channels unable to pay their employees have been doing the rounds. While Raj News Telugu has been stuck in revamp for months, ETV has already launched its Telangana-specific channel, ETV3.

With 80 per cent of the state being dominated by Hathway Cable and Datacom, distribution woes are not unheard of. And yet, channels keep growing year on year.

To add to it, soon, many new Telangana centric channels will crop up to add to the existing chaos. The existing channels will be rearranging their distribution and editorial strategies to suit the needs of two states.

It’s time channels realised that the market is oversaturated before it’s too late. Surely the MIB can look into the state of news broadcasters in the state and rethink before giving out licences like freebies.
