Mumbai – Delhi, the capital of India, the second most populous complex megacity in the world buzzing with over 18 million people, is managed by 81,000 personnel of Delhi Police. In a first of its kind television series, ‘Capital Police – Beyond the Khaki’, scheduled to premiere on 23rd July at 9 PM on ‘Discovery’ & ‘Discovery HD World’ captures men and women in Khaki, on the go, as they fight crime to and maintain law and order.

This makes the show, its treatment and the way it is conceptualized different from any other show. Each of the 4 episodes of the invigorating series will focus on a specific issue. For instance – Porous borders (Delhi’s shared borders with the states of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana offers an opportunity to criminals to cross over and evade state police); City of Mega Events (Important events of national importance like Republic Day, Independence Day are celebrated where the police officials work round the clock to mitigate all potential risks); Women Safety (ensuring the city is safer for women) and Needle in a haystack (finding petty criminals who disappear in the vast population and complex layout of the city).

Megha Tata, Managing Director – South Asia, Discovery Communications India, said, “Capital Police – Beyond the Khaki’ is Discovery’s endeavor to bring to light stories of tireless Delhi police heroes who do everything it takes to keep our capital city safe. The viewers will for the very first time, walk alongside a police official who is trying to solve a real-life situation. The officials may not always succeed, but they also never give up. And for that we salute them and stand by them!”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Mandeep Singh Randhawa, said, “Through Capital Police – Beyond the Khaki, our aim is to give a deeper peep into the day to day functioning and the various challenges confronted by our police force towards their commitment in standing upto the expectations and trust put on them by the citizens of Delhi. It has been a fascinating experience for some of our officials who were part of this pilot as they have never before appeared before camera. They are not actors, they are real life heroes who went about doing their duties in a nonchalant way even while Discovery’s cameras were rolling.”

Combiflam tablet launches pain education campaign for rural marke

MUMBAI: Sanofi India – makers of the Combiflam pain relief tablets along with Bollywood actor Soha Ali Khan has launched its first initiative under its pain education campaign – Pain Clinics.

This phase comprises a series of doctor and pain expert videos on a dedicated YouTube channel to generate awareness and educate people, so that they can understand and treat pain in an informed and responsible manner.

The subsequent phases of the campaign will include multi-channel awareness drives and data-driven insights rolled out across the country to help people understand and manage pain effectively.

According to a survey conducted by IPSOS in India, every person admitted to suffering from some kind of pain in the last 12 months, and 43 per cent of the pain occasions were treated with an available painkiller at home. This shows the need for an initiative that brings national pain management experts and doctors on board, to provide tips and advice on how pain can be better managed.

Sanofi GM of consumer healthcare, India and South Asia Nikhilesh Kalra says, “Combiflam tablet is India’s most prescribed pain relief brand and relieves over 1.8 billion pain incidences in a year4. It is the trusted household name for millions of people and healthcare practitioners. It is common for people to seek health related information on internet. However, not all information one finds on the web is credible, and hence, we felt the need to launch a credible source of information.”

“Uttar Pradesh has some of the highest pain incidences in the country, and an average of 15 lakh incidences of pain are resolved by the Combiflam every day. This is why Uttar Pradesh is a very important State for us, and a social initiative such as this one will be of great value. We are launching this initiative in Uttar Pradesh and plan to scale it across the country”, adds Kalra.

Arthroscopy and sports injury specialist Dr. Moazzam Jah adds, “It is common for people to trust the internet for information and solutions, for their pain. This is dangerous and misleading, and we as doctors, strongly advocate that patients speak to us or ensure they consume information that is not only validated, but also medically correct. Combiflam® tablet has also been a victim of some misleading social media messages in the past that have questioned its safety and efficacy.”

Sanofi India Ltd. is launching this social initiative in seven cities of Uttar Pradesh – Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad, Gorakhpur, Moradabad, Varanasi and Bareilly.

  • Cleaning up games: BCCI anti-corruption unit hunts down three

MUMBAI: The Anti Corruption Unit of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been tracking activities of certain individuals, as a result of which, three suspects were arrested in Kanpur, on Thursday.

Following this operation, the Uttar Pradesh Police Crime Branch could foil the alleged betting attempts of the accused. This was an outcome of the ACU of the BCCI, having worked closely with various law enforcement agencies, who will continue further investigations, in this matter.

Betting and piracy are the two major challenges that plague games and telecast of sports events.

As reported by indiantelevision.com earlier, even though the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assigned the telecast rights for fat sums to broadcasters and streaming platforms in India and almost every major nation, the fact remains that piracy continues to dog the telecast of the IPL as well as most other major sport tournaments.

Anti-piracy UK-based company Friends MTS kept a tab on the first weekend (7-9 April) of the ongoing IPL 2017 tournament. And, alarmingly, it discovered that more than 1,700 unique URLs were telecasting IPL — illegally. It also detected more than 211 unique servers, 122 pirate streams, 51 hosting sites,  and 23 infrastructure providers serving the 1,700 unique URLs.

  • Pro Kabaddi: Mashal Sports invites tenders to own & manage new team

MUMBAI: Mashal Sports, in which Star Sports owns 74% stake, has, pursuant to the Invitation for Expression of Interest dated 29 March, has called for expressions of interest (“EOI”) to be submitted by eligible persons, fulfilling the criteria provided for in the Invitation, who wish to participate in a competitive bidding process proposed to be run for the award of the rights to own, operate and manage a proposed new franchise team which will compete in the Pro Kabaddi League owned and operated by Mashal (“PKL”) from and including the PKL seasons to be held in 2017 onwards, on such terms and conditions as agreed with Mashal.

Pro Kabaddi is now set to expand to up to four new geographies. With the addition of the new teams, Pro Kabaddi is gearing up to surpass other Indian sports leagues in terms of geographic representation (teams from 11 states), number of matches (130+ matches), and duration of the league (13 weeks) in Season 5.

The intended new states for Pro Kabaddi have been selected very carefully. Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat have been primarily chosen for their high affinity towards Kabaddi with massive fan bases, significant on-ground presence of the sport, and potential commercial value to sponsors and advertisers. Both Haryana and Tamil Nadu contribute large number of players to Pro Kabaddi, as well as leading public sector teams in the country. Along with Uttar Pradesh, these states have a rich cultural tradition of highly popular local Kabaddi tournaments. The intrinsic popularity of Kabaddi in India has been most recently demonstrated in Gujarat where the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup has led to a huge surge in public following of Kabaddi.

Pro Kabaddi became an instant hit with Indian sports fans in its very first season in 2014 as 435 million* viewers tuned in. This modern league in India’s ancient sport of Kabaddi has continued to grow from strength to strength in subsequent seasons. Its cumulative viewership growth of 51 per cent over four seasons is the highest for any sports league in India. Within a short span of 2 years, Pro Kabaddi has captured the imagination of Indian viewers and established itself as one of the highest impact television properties in key markets. It has even surpassed IPL in Andhra Pradesh and also achieved primetime slot leadership in Mumbai.

Significantly, the high popularity of Pro Kabaddi as well as 2016 Kabaddi World Cup has evoked continually surging sponsor interest. Pro Kabaddi Season 4 had a total of 64 league and franchise sponsors on board. This fast growing interest from sponsors from diverse sectors of the economy mirrors Kabaddi’s pan-India appeal – cutting across key consumer segments from metropolitan markets to heartland as well as pan-geographical regions. In a remarkably strong endorsement of Kabaddi, the latest edition of an annual report jointly prepared by the leading media investment advisory firm ESP Properties and Sportzpower, a provider of sports business news, states, “…in terms of absolute numbers added to the Sports Sponsorship pie, India’s ancient contact team sport was THE story of 2016.”

“Even for an optimist like me, the response we have seen for Kabaddi is surprising. Having seen its affinity in the country, it would be a disservice to the sport if we do not grow it further. All stakeholders have decided to come together to expand the league and given the pace at which this is growing, it might be just the first in a series of expansions in the coming years”, said Star India chairman and CEO Uday Shankar.

A father figure to Indian Kabaddi, International Kabaddi Federation president Janardan Singh Gehlot stated, “Pro Kabaddi is a truly unique example of how a modern league has transformed the much loved but traditional Kabaddi into a modern sport. Star Sports as well as Mashal have created a magnificent example for the growth of India as multi-sport nation.”

An All India Kabaddi player hunt 2017 was organised by Mashal Sports in association with AKFI as part of its talent development programme across 14 cities in India. Over 4600 participants between the age groups of 18 to 22 years got a chance to showcase their Kabaddi talent. This initiative will play an important role in catalysing the on-ground Kabaddi eco-system and providing a future pipeline of players.

Mashal Sports is inviting Expression of Interest from reputable corporate entities having a vision for investing in the overall development of the sport from the ground up and participating in the success of PKL through their active involvement as a franchise team. Mashal Sports will shortlist selected interested participants and invite them to participate in a transparent tender process. The selection of the winning bidders will be done by a panel of eminent people based on both qualitative and financial criteria. The process is expected to be completed by 5 May, 2017 providing enough time for the new franchise to prepare for Season 5 starting in July 2017.

  • Schedules fixed for broadcasts in five poll-bound states

Schedules fixed for broadcasts in five poll-bound states

NEW DELHI: All India Radio and Doordarshan, which provide a platform for political parties to make poll broadcasts before every election, will also organise a maximum of two panel discussions and/or debates on the Kendras/Stations for the forthcoming elections to the state assemblies in Goa, Punjab, Manipur, Uttarakhand & Uttar Pradesh.

Each eligible party can nominate one representative to such a programme, but the Election Commission of India will approve the names of coordinators for such panel discussions and debates in consultation with the Prasar Bharati Corporation.

The Commission has, as in previous years, worked out a schedule for the time to be given for poll broadcasts to different parties. The facilities of use of broadcast time and telecast time will be available only to National Parties and Recognized State Parties in the states where the polls are scheduled.

The facilities will be available from the Regional Kendra of the All India Radio and Doordarshan and in the headquarters in the relevant states and relayed by other stations within the respective States.

A base time of 45 minutes will be given to each National Party uniformly on the Regional Kendra of Doordarshan network and All India Radio network in the respective states.

The additional time to be allotted to the parties has been decided on the basis of the poll performance of the parties in the last assembly election from the respective above mentioned States/UTs.

In a single session of broadcast, no party will be allocated more than 15 minutes.
The period of broadcast and telecast will be between the last date of filing the nominations and will end two days before the date of poll in the respective states.

However, there will be no telecast or broadcast during the 48 hours preceding the close of polls as per specific provisions of the Representation of People Act, 1951. Prasar Bharati in consultation with the Commission will decide the actual date and time for broadcast and telecast. This will be subject to the broad technical constraints governing the actual time of transmission available with the Doordarshan and All India Radio.

The guidelines prescribed by the Commission for telecast and broadcast will be strictly followed. The telecasts/broadcasts on Doordarshan/AIR will not permit criticism of other countries; attack on religions or communities; anything obscene or defamatory; incitement of violence; anything amounting to contempt of court; aspersion against the integrity of the President and Judiciary; anything affecting the unity, socereignty and integrity of the Nation; or any criticism by name of any person.

The parties will be required to submit transcripts and recording in advance. The parties can get this recorded at their own cost in studios, which meet the technical standards prescribed by Prasar Bharati or at the Doordarshan/All India Radio Kendras. They can, as an alternative, have these recorded in the studios of Doordarshan and All India Radio by advance requests. In such cases, the recordings may be done at the State Capital and at timings indicated by Doordarshan/All India Radio in advance.

Time Vouchers will be available in the denomination of 5 minutes with one voucher having time allotment from one to four minutes and the parties will be free to combine them suitably. The allotment of time to different political parties is given in a statement enclosed herewith.

Introduced for the Lok Sabha elections in 1998, the scheme of free broadcasts was extended by the Commission to the State Assemblies held after 1998 and General Elections to the Lok Sabha in 1999, 2004 and 2009.

With the amendments to the Representation of People Act 1951 through “Election and Other Related Laws (Amendment) Act, 2003” and the rules notified thereunder, equitable time sharing for campaigning by recognized political parties on electronic media now has statutory basis.

In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (a) of the Explanation below section 39A of the Representation of People Act, 1951, the Central Government has notified all such broadcasting media which are owned or controlled or financed wholly or substantially by funds provided to them by the Central Government as the electronic media for the purposes of that section. Therefore, the Commission has decided to extend the said scheme of equitable time sharing on electronic media through Prasar Bharati Corporation to the ensuing General Election to the five State Legislative Assemblies.
