With no LIVE audience, PKL teams opt for digital innovation to connect with fans

Mumbai: With a week left for the launch of Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) Season eight, the excitement is palpable among fans as well as the playing teams. For UP Yoddha, the latest edition offers another opportunity to level up their game from the play-offs and clinch the coveted trophy for the first time.

The team has consistently made it to the playoffs in every season since its inception in 2017, but has yet to win the title. “We are very excited to have the PKL return after a hiatus of almost two years. The players cannot wait to be back in the competitive environment. And, this time we are more focused and energised to reach the final step and lift the trophy,” says GMR League Games and UP Yoddha CEO Vinod Bisht in an exclusive chat with Indiantelevision.com.

The team is all set to begin its campaign with a first match against defending champions Bengal Warriors on the opening day – 22 December. Unlike before, the latest edition of the league will be played without any LIVE audience due to Covid protocols, and with all teams integrated into a bio-bubble. But, that has not deterred the enthusiasm among the teams, says Bisht.

“The players’ will to win and competitiveness will only get fiercer. But, they are mindful of the changing scenarios, the absence of fans, and a testing bubble life,” says the CEO.

Bisht, a former commanding officer (CO) in the Indian Army started his Sports journey as a business mentor for Patna pirates in PKL, before teaming up with the UP Yoddha Franchise. Based in Greater Noida, the GMR Group-owned UP Yoddha franchise was introduced into the league in the fifth season and has been part of the league ever since.

Talking about the post-pandemic impact on the overall experience of the game, Bisht says, “We would have loved to have a full-house cheering for us on home ground, but we need to be cautious of the situation we are in. The safety of our fans is our top priority. With everything that’s happening around, everyone needs to adapt. We just want our players to play passionately, and our fans to enjoy the game even if it’s from the comfort of their home.”

All matches will be aired LIVE on Star Sports Network, the official broadcast network, and streamed on Disney+ Hotstar, which has already unveiled its mega campaign, #JoBhidegaWohBadhega, featuring former Indian cricket team skipper MS Dhoni.

Elaborating on how the franchise plans to elevate the experience for their fans who will be watching from home, Bisht says, “We are doing series of online activations involving our fans who we call the ‘Yoddha Toli’ and this Yodhha Toli will interact with our players and other fans through various innovative digital innovations.” The franchise will also focus more on social media interfaces, being mindful of the ongoing pandemic. “But, we definitely intend to meet all our fans at our state-of-the-art UP Yoddha BK Kabaddi Academy in Meerut once the season is over,” he adds.

ABP News has come on board as the principal sponsor of the UP Yoddha for the 2021-22 season, and the channel logo will feature prominently on the players’ jerseys. “We are the only kabaddi team from Uttar Pradesh, the largest state in India population-wise and given the ongoing situation it was physically impossible to reach all corners of the state, and that’s where ABP News comes in,” says Bisht on association with the news channel. “Considering the popularity of the league, the partnership will help ABP News connect with a wider audience by capturing the interest of sports consumers across both rural and urban markets in the Hindi speaking states.”

The partnership also comes at a time when the state of Uttar Pradesh is heading into polls, which creates its own buzz around activities associated with the state.

This season, the team has also upped its game with the addition of star player Pradeep Narwal for a whopping ₹1.65 crore, becoming one of the most expensive players auctioned at a league outside of cricket.

Talking about the growth in viewership of the sports event, Bisht says, “Kabaddi is one of those childhood games that you played with your friends, a sport that’s close to every Indian’s heart. It has been one of the most played sports in our country, and PKL has allowed teams to represent different parts of our country which shows how much the sport has grown over the years.”

  • UP CM provides Rs 10 lakh aid to family of journalists who succumbed to Covid-19

UP CM provides Rs 10 lakh aid to family of journalists who succumbed to Covid-19

Mumbai: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has announced financial aid to the families of journalists who lost their lives due to the coronavirus pandemic. The families of scribes were provided a cheque of Rs 10 lakh each.

Adityanath was accompanied by India TV editor-in-chief and chairman Rajat Sharma, who also paid tributes to the deceased journalists.

“TV, print, digital journalists not only covered news during the lockdown, but they also worked as a bridge between the government and the common people. I am proud to say that people from the media fraternity faced the challenge bravely,” said Sharma, adding that there were also times when people stepped out of their homes but did not follow the COVID-19 protocols. “During such times too, our reporters and camera persons spoke to people and questioned them. Some even disrespected journalists upon questioning, however, they continued to do their job and even urged the people to wear masks and follow the coronavirus protocols.”

Sharma said as the president of NBA, he had also urged the chief minister to provide vaccination for journalists. “The coronavirus pandemic is yet not over and those who have yet not received their vaccination jab should go for it at the earliest,” he added.

“Over 25 thousand journalists were vaccinated during the drive,” said the chief minister Yogi Adityanath. During the second wave of the pandemic, many journalists across the country got infected on duty and lost their lives, leaving their families helpless, the UP government said.

  • After Odisha, UP and Tamil Nadu declare journalists as frontline workers

After Odisha, UP and Tamil Nadu declare journalists as frontline workers

New Delhi: After Odisha, now Uttar Pradesh has declared journalists as frontline workers to be given priority in the ongoing vaccination drive and also directed authorities to allot separate centres for them where they can be inoculated.

The new government formed in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal has also classified journalists as frontline workers, a day after emerging victorious in the Assembly elections.

“All journalists working in newspapers and the visual media risk their lives and their work will be considered as frontline workers in Tamil Nadu,” said Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin on Tuesday.

The devastating second wave of Covid2019 has taken a severe toll on news mediapersons, many of whom have been reporting from the ground. According to the Delhi-based Institute of Perception Studies, more than 100 journalists have died since 1 April 2020. Over 52 scribes from various parts of the country lost their lives in April alone.

The decision comes amid several appeals by the Editors Guild of India (EGI) to the central government to give journalists priority in vaccination along with frontline workers. While several states, including Uttrakhand, Odisha, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab have already declared journalists as frontline workers, the Centre has not yet made any provision in this regard.

“Despite the support from various state governments and media organisations, the central government has not responded to this request. Now, even though vaccination has been technically opened for all above 18 years of age, there is an acute shortage of vaccines. Therefore, the Guild’s urgent demand that journalists be given priority along with other frontline workers,” said the Guild in a recent statement, while condoling the death of mediapersons.

Welcoming the UP government’s decision on Tuesday, News Broadcasters Association president Rajat Sharma said UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath has directed his officials to open special vaccination centres exclusively for media personnel.

Sharma had earlier written a letter to the UP CM to make the vaccines available to all media personnel and their family members on priority. “Noida has emerged as a big centre for national electronic media, and most of the TV journalists and camerapersons work and live here. In most of the cases, TV reporters and camera persons have to work in the midst of crowds, and meet Covid2019 patients, doctors and health care workers in hospitals. Hence, the need for vaccinating them and their family members on priority,” wrote the senior journalist.

  • From Neelesh Misra to Sudhanshu Rai: Meet some of India’s ‘bestseller’ storytellers

From Neelesh Misra to Sudhanshu Rai: Meet some of India’s ‘bestseller’ storytellers

Remember those visits to grandparents when we were kids? We used to play in the streets and roam around in the neighbourhood like a nomad. But what we used to wait for eagerly were ‘Dadi ki kahaaniyan’, which took us through unseen worlds with tales of love, glory, valour and at times, witches and ghosts. As time passed, we grew older as well as distant from that beautiful experience. But thanks to some new-age storytellers, who are taking storytelling to its zenith, the art survived the test of time.

Though the art continues to thrive, there are very few who have mastered the techniques and the empathy that’s needed to charm others through spoken words. Let’s take a look at some of the finest storytellers of the present era:

    1. Neelesh Misra

Born in Uttar Pradesh in 1973, Neelesh Misra started his professional career as a journalist. While pursuing his journalistic career, Neelesh never gave up his passion of writing and narrating stories. His dedication and perseverance led him to the studios of a popular FM station, where he started a show called ‘Yaadon ka Idiot Box’. As fate would have it, Neelesh Misra’s storytelling skills touched the hearts of listeners and he soon became a household name. He went on to write screenplays and song lyrics for some major Bollywood projects, and also bagged a number of awards. His popularity has surged to an unparallel level, for if he just says ‘Kahaniyan sunata hun’ on a stage, the audience responds with never-ending applause.

    2. Sudhanshu Rai

This new-age storyteller is popular across different social media platforms as ‘Kahanikaar Sudhanshu Rai’. What’s special about his stories is the fact that each of his stories are not just narrated, but also conceived by him. Most of his creations are from the genres of horror, thriller, detective stories, science fiction. But on special occasions, Sudhanshu does not refrain from treating his listeners with some out-of-the-box heart touching stories. His idea behind writing and narrating stories is that they should be inspirational, entertaining and must touch lives of people. Some of his stories such as ‘The Mystery of Dark House’ and ‘Happy New Year 2020’ were shared widely on social media platforms and loved by one and all.

    3. Vikram Sridhar

According to Vikram Sridhar, the founder of Around the Story Tree, a sit-down storytelling is as interesting and engaging as stand-up comedy. Vikram is known for his various storytelling sessions among children of different age groups and cities. As per a report in The Hindu, Vikram has done at least 120 sessions across India. His USP is that he can do the same story in a 15-minute format for kids and in a more detailed format for adults. He believes that storytelling as a performing art is still in its nascent stage in India and has a long road ahead. His tales are mostly about history, mythology and folklores.

    4. Geeta Ramanujam

She is one of the senior-most storytellers in the country and has been pursuing the art for more than 22 years now. She has established and founded the Academy of Storytelling, which is the only globally recognised Academy for Storytelling in the World. The veteran storyteller works with the concept of impacting young minds to think differently, by transforming their thinking and creativity. Her mantra is – to be a good storyteller, you need to be a good listener. Geeta Ramanujam has also founded a trust named Kathalaya, which aims at making a positive change in society through storytelling.

    https://www.facebook.com/geeta.ramanujam

The aforementioned individuals have carved a niche for themselves in their bid to keep the age-old tradition of storytelling alive. They have, in their own unique ways, molded and transformed the art, but only to keep the soul of it intact. What they do is not just different, but probably one of the most real form of various arts around us.
