Nickelodeon joins hands with United Nations on ‘World Environment Day’

Mumbai: On the momentous occasion of World Environment Day 2022, Nickelodeon, the kids’ entertainment channel has joined forces with the United Nations in India for a flagship campaign.

    Reducing carbon footprint

With the intent to save our mother earth from the global environmental crises, the leading kids’ entertainment collaboration with the United Nations in India will raise awareness on ways to reduce carbon footprint. It will emphasize the importance of protecting the planet and aims to highlight the need to reset the balance with nature through individual actions.

The campaign will create engagement across social media to motivate kids to take up a green heart pledge and adopt different ways to address climate change.

Nickelodeon’s creative communication will deliver the fundamental message of collective climate action with an emphasis on ‘Yeh Planet Hum Sabka Ghar Hai’.

Spreading awareness about saving the planet

As a part of this campaign, Nickelodeon’s Nicktoons brings two inspiring stories to spread the message of ‘Yeh Planet Hum Sabka Ghar Hai’. The first story titled ‘Kaagaz Ka Ghar’, throws light on human-wildlife conflict while the second story ‘Paani Ka Ghar’ emphasizes marine and plastic pollution. With ‘Yeh Planet Hum Sabka Ghar Hai’, both the stories showcase kids taking the initiative to become climate heroes and bringing about positive change by teaching adults important climate action lessons.

Speaking on the association, Viacom18 head – of Hindi mass entertainment and kids tv network Nina Elavia Jaipuria said, “Nickelodeon has always focused on empowering kids in the most meaningful ways through innovative initiatives. With a strong belief that these dynamic young minds are the true change agents of society, we felt kids must understand the importance of a greener future. We are very proud to join hands with the United Nations on World Environment Day. With the might of our franchise and our adorable Nicktoons, we will bring alive the message of #OnlyOneEarth to as many kids and parents as possible.”

Commending the initiative, UN resident coordinator in India Shombi Sharp said “This World Environment Day, the UN in India is excited to launch a partnership with Nickelodeon, empowering and inspiring children to become climate champions from an early age. The entertainment industry has the power to influence the largest youth generation in history for positive change. Through this partnership, we hope to give a platform to creative young minds to be the drivers of climate action and tackle the triple planetary crisis. When children lead, families and societies follow, and when India leads the world succeeds.”

UN agency ITU to set up area office for South Asia in New Delhi

Mumbai: The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) – United Nations specialised agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs), is set to open in New Delhi by mid-2022. The planned area office, funded by the government of India, will enhance regional initiatives for sustainable and inclusive digital transformation in South Asia.

The ITU area office and innovation centre aims to strengthen technology cooperation and boost regional telecommunications development. Through a closer presence, ITU hopes to advance shared regional priorities, such as reducing disparities between developing and developed countries in terms of Internet access, digital skills, and other socio-economic indicators after the Covid-19 pandemic.

From India’s national capital, the new office will implement ITU initiatives and provide technical assistance and policy guidance on information and communication technologies (ICTs) in South Asia.

“Today’s agreement is an important step in the enduring partnership between ITU and the Republic of India, and between ITU and the South Asia sub-region,” said ITU secretary-general Houlin Zhao. “I’m confident that the establishment of an ITU area office for South Asia in New Delhi will help to push the boundaries of innovation and accelerate digital transformation for all people and communities across India, the region and beyond.”

India’s minister of communications Ashwini Vaishnaw welcomed the opportunity for closer regional and international engagement through the signing of a host-country agreement for the office.

“India is proud to partner with ITU on this progressive initiative for the region, which will advance shared regional priorities, help reduce disparities with developed countries, and strengthen South Asia’s post-Covid recovery. India is determined to bridge the digital divide and help address the ensuing inequalities in digital access affecting the entire region,” he said.

ITU promotes inclusive connectivity for all as a key part of global sustainable development. Governments, companies, research institutes, and civil society organisations from around the world, gathered at the last ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Dubai in 2018, noted the need for an upgraded regional presence to conduct programmes and projects harnessing technologies for sustainable development.

ITU regional and area offices report to the director of ITU’s telecommunication development bureau, currently Doreen Bogdan-Martin, who said she was excited about the opening of the South Asia area office in New Delhi.

“This new office will allow ITU to broaden partnerships, building upon current work and facilitating digital innovation,” she said. “ITU will work, together with the Government of India, to ensure that the new office strengthens ITU’s regional presence, by bringing ITU closer to member countries, and further enhances ITU’s capability to help them recover from the Covid-19 pandemic, accelerate the achievement of sustainable development, and at the same time advance digital transformation.”

ITU’s South Asia team will focus specifically on setting up an innovation centre for exchanges of ideas, success stories, innovative solutions, and global endeavours, promoting the introduction of advanced technologies, contributing to the development of ICT/telecommunication networks and services in South Asia, providing technical assistance in relation to infrastructure, e-governance, and cross-sectoral ICT applications, assisting with human resources and capacity development and conducting other activities related to ITU’s mandate to connect the world and support the UN sustainable development goals.

  • TV channel and new events part of Olympic Agenda 2020

TV channel and new events part of Olympic Agenda 2020

MUMBAI: The International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach recently revealed 40 proposals that make up the Olympic Agenda 2020, which is a roadmap for the future of the Olympic movement, which will be discussed and voted on by the full IOC membership at the 127th IOC session to be held on 8 and 9 December in Monaco.

During the public launch of the recommendations president Bach called the 20+20 proposals “the culmination of a year of open, transparent and widespread debate and discussion, which had already begun in mid-2013.”

“These 40 recommendations are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When you put them together, a picture emerges that shows the IOC safeguarding the uniqueness of the Olympic Games and strengthening sport in society,” he added.

Some of the key areas addressed by the recommendations are:

    – Launch of an Olympic TV Channel to provide a platform for sports and athletes beyond the Olympic Games period, 365 days a year. To fully connect with the digital age and connect with young people on their terms which will be a worldwide platform and an opportunity to spread Olympic values as well as highlighting the IOC’s many cultural and humanitarian projects. Candidate cities may also be given exposure during the bidding phase.

    – Changes to the bidding process with a new philosophy to invite potential candidate cities to present a project that fits their sporting, economic, social and environmental long-term planning needs. The organisation of sports and events outside the host city and even, in exceptional cases, outside the host country could also be allowed, always respecting the integrity of the Olympic Village.

    – Reducing costs for bidding by decreasing the number of presentations that are allowed and providing a significant financial contribution from the IOC. At the same time emphasising that the sustainability of a bid must be taken into consideration right from the beginning.

    – Move from a sport-based to an event-based programme. Create limits on accreditation for athletes, coaches and other athlete support staff to ensure that the games do not grow bigger. Allowing more than 28 sports to be on the programme while respecting these limits.

    – Strengthen the sixth fundamental principle of Olympism by including non-discrimination on sexual orientation in the sixth fundamental principle of Olympism in the Olympic charter.

    – Adapting and further strengthening the principles of good governance and ethics to changing demands. Ensuring compliance with the Basic Universal Principles of Good Governance and transparency of accounts with the IOC’s financial statements to be prepared and audited according to the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) even when not legally required. Strengthening the independence of the IOC Ethics Commission with the chair and members of the commission to be elected by the IOC Session. The IOC will also create the position of compliance officer to advise IOC members, staff, NOCs and IFs with regard to compliance.

The recommendations were first presented to a round table of athletes, many of whom actively contributed to the Olympic Agenda 2020 process. The athletes remain at the centre of all 40 of the proposals, with the protection of the clean athletes being at the heart of the IOC’s philosophy. The central importance of the “athletes’ experience” will be introduced into the evaluation criteria with no compromise on the field of play for athletes, and the paramount importance of the Olympic Village.

The 40 recommendations were finalised by the IOC executive board in October following presentations from the chairs of the 14 Working Groups that were set up to refine the proposals earlier this year. In addition to members of the Olympic Movement, including national Olympic committees, international federations, sponsors and athletes, the working groups consisted of experts from civil society such as the United Nations, Google/YouTube, Transparency International, the Clinton Foundation, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the World Bank.
