  • UEFA Euro 2020: 37 million viewers watched the first 21 matches on SPSN

    Mumbai: The football fever is sweeping the world and India is no different. The UEFA Euro 2020 has performed well in terms of ratings on TV with 37 million viewers tuning in to Sony Pictures Sports Network (SPSN) to watch the entire coverage of the first 21 matches of the tournament in the group stage from 11 to 18 June. The total viewership rating is the culmination of BARC, All India, CS2+, Cumulative reach of LIVE matches, wraparound shows, highlights, and repeats on SPSN.

    In terms of average Impressions, viewership for Euro 2020 is almost three times (BARC, All India Urban+ Rural, CS 2+, LIVE match) the viewership of UEFA EURO 2016, it said in a statement.

    The Hindi audio feed for the LIVE matches has been watched by close to 12 million viewers across the country to date. Whereas the Malayalam and Bengali audio feed recorded close to six million viewers on Sony Six.

    The most-watched game to date has been Hungary vs Portugal, and Denmark vs Belgium was the second, witnessed by 8.5 million and 7.5 million viewers, respectively.

    The massive viewership of Euro 2020 in the group stages is evidence of cricket-frenzy country’s appreciation for one of the biggest footballing spectacles of Europe currently underway on SPSN.

    Sports channels see marginal rise in viewership due to IndvsNZ, Australian Open

    MUMBAI: Sports is the most preferred genre by viewers and advertisers after GECs and movie channels, and cricket most-watched sport all of them. This had become more evident during the third T20 match between India and New Zealand due to the marginal increase in the viewership of Sports channels, according to the Broadcast Audience Research Council India week 4 data.

    Out of the top five sports channels, STAR Sports 1 Hindi has bagged number one spot in week 4 (25-31 January) of BARC, and has received at least 378958 weekly impressions. On the second spot on the chart, DD Sports that achieved 103110 weekly impressions, all thanks to India and New Zealand's nail-biting third and fourth T20 matches that were broadcasted on the government-owned channel.

    Though STAR Sports 1 Hindi was ranked first, the other two channels of the Star group such as STAR Sports First and STAR Sports 3 have been positioned at third and fifth spot respectively in the list of week 4. Dominating the sports genre, STAR’s all three channels combine have gained over 5 lakh weekly impressions, according to the latest BARC data.

    Apart from cricket, the other important sporting event — Australian Open was also televised in week 4. Precisely, the quarter and semi-final matches took place in the week 4 data of the BARC. Australian Open 2020 helped Sony Pictures Networks’ Sony Ten 1 to gain viewership, which received 62824 weekly impressions in the latest BARC report.

    The marquee sports events that are scheduled at both domestic and international this year are ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, IPL 2020, ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Olympics 2020, UEFA Euro 2020.

    MUMBAI: Football is rapidly becoming one of the most followed sports for Indian audiences. It has seen a massive growth in the past few years in the country, with over 500 million viewers sampling the sport in FY 2017-18. As the audience focus shifts from a cricket loving to a multi-sport viewing nation, the fan following for international football leagues, clubs and players is steadily on the rise in the country. This growth was further confirmed by the highly successful 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia which saw a total cumulative reach of 254 million viewers* on SPN.

    The sports channels of SPN continue to be the one-stop destination for football fans to catch the best players and the best teams in the sport.     The UEFA Nations League has been created for the 55-member nations of UEFA, the European governing body of football. This will largely replace international friendlies in Europe. The inaugural edition of the UEFA Nations League is set to kick off this week and includes 2018 FIFA World Cup Champions France along with Croatia, Belgium, Germany, England, Spain, Portugal and more. While the World Cup and the EURO championship will take place in every alternate even-year, the UEFA Nations League will take place every odd-year. The group fixtures for the League of Nations will be played over six match days between September and November of 2018, with the finals set for June 2019. European teams dominated the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia and these teams will be now battle again in the UEFA Nations League as we head towards the UEFA EURO 2020. The first week features France v Germany, England v Spain and Portugal v Italy.

    The 16th edition of UEFA EURO 2020 is going to be unique as it is not going to be hosted by one country, but rather spread out across the whole continent. 12 cities in 12 different countries will host matches, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the tournament. The EURO 2020 will run from 12th June – 12th July in 2020 and will feature 24 teams. Qualifiers for the tournament will run from 21st March 2019 – 31st March 2020. Led by Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal won the historic championship in 2016 and will return as the defending champions.
