    Twitter refuses to appear before Parliamentary Committee on IT

    MUMBAI: Amid growing concern about data security, Twitter CEO and senior officials declined to appear before the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology on 11 February. The global social media giant cited “short notice of the hearing” as reason for the refusal.

    Earlier the Parliamentary Committee headed by Anurag Thakur issued a summon to Twitter via official letter to discuss the issues concerning the use of social media. While 7 February was decided as the date for meeting, it was rescheduled to 11 February to provide more time to Twitter CEO and senior officials.

    "It may be noted that the head of the organisation has to appear before the committee," the letter clearly mentioned according to reports. "He/She may be accompanied by another representative," it further added.

    Twitter's legal, policy, trust and safety global lead Vijaya Gadde sent back a letter stating, "No one who engages publicly for Twitter India makes enforcement decisions with respect to our rules for content or accounts in India."

    The letter also added that deputing a junior employee to represent Twitter at the Indian Parliamentary IT Committee has not gone down well with Indian lawmakers especially since they have no decision making authority.

    MUMBAI: As part of #PowerOf18 initiative, Twitter is collaborating with renowned Indian personalities to encourage the youth of India to vote in the upcoming general elections. It has kick-started an online video series on its official handle featuring young personalities from across India, including singer Jassie Gill, boxer Nikhat Zareen, and writer, poet, and #MeTooIndia voice Mahima Kukreja.

    The first video in the series features Gill who is seen talking about youth, politics and what #PowerOf18 means to him. In the video, Jassie can be seen recalling his younger days. He shares how excited he was to get his driver’s license on turning 18. He insists that young people should express themselves on Twitter.

    On youth empowerment, the singer says that it is the youth that fuels the growth of a nation through fresh perspectives. Efforts should be put into good things and if the youth of India sets their minds, they can do great things and make their family, neighbourhood, and country very proud.

    Twitter India launches #PowerOf18 initiative for youth civic engagement

    MUMBAI:  Voting rights emerged as the top response when asked what people would consider the power of turning 18 years old, according to a new survey from Twitter India. With this empowering insight, Twitter is launching today a social initiative called #PowerOf18 aimed at encouraging the youth of India to contribute to public debate and participate in civic engagement in the upcoming election season. Supported by Twitter’s mission to serve the public conversation, the initiative was launched by Jack Dorsey, CEO & Co-Founder, Twitter and  Maya Hari, Vice-President & Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Twitter in a Townhall chat with the students of IIT Delhi today. The campaign launch is marked by an emoji activated by the #PowerOf18 hashtag.

    The research conducted with over 3,600 respondents aged 18 – 30 year olds, comprising Twitter and non-Twitter users, focused on people’s attitude in India in shaping the political and social environment. The survey found an overwhelming 94% of respondents indicating that they would vote in the upcoming elections. 87% of Indians surveyed believe that voting makes you a responsible citizen and more than half (53%) are voting because they want to make a difference.

    The study also pointed towards the rising importance of social media for information consumption. 57% of youth surveyed would turn to social media to find out what’s happening in India and around the world, a percentage higher than all other mediums including newspapers. 69% of Twitter users surveyed always stay up to date with political news and events versus 44% of non-Twitter users.

    Additionally, the survey found Twitter users more engaged in civic discussion versus non-Twitter users. 59% of Twitter users actively engage with and raise concerns to the government on issues that affect them or their community versus 37% of non-Twitter users. Two in three Indian Twitter users believe that they are contributing to the public debate by posting on Twitter.

    In relation, Twitter India aims to encourage the youth of India with #PowerOf18 to leverage the platform for public conversation and vote for the future they seek. As part of the initiative, Twitter is kickstarting the initiative with an online video series on @TwitterIndia featuring young personalities across India such as Indian singer Jassie Gill (@JassieGill), Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen (@Nikhat_Zareen), writer, poet and #MeTooIndia voice Mahima Kukreja (@AGirlOfHerWords), sharing about their inspirations and their view of #PowerOf18. Twitter seeks to work with more like-minded partners and personalities to create awareness of the importance of voting.

    Several questions focused around Twitter’s role in shaping society and culture, youth activism, upcoming general elections and the importance of voting were raised during the Townhall at IIT Delhi:

    Twitter will be fuelling #PowerOf18 conversations through @TwitterIndia as part of this initiative. #PowerOf18 will serve as a resource for all young Indians to find more information about the elections, support social causes they are passionate about, and join the public conversation. The platform aims to engage more young people in India to contribute to public debate and work with like-minded partners that share the same objective of encouraging civic engagement among the youth.

    The nationwide survey was conducted with 3,622 youth respondents from India between 24 September – 19 October 2018. The survey methodology qualifies the respondents as minimally secondary literate, aged between 18 – 30 years old.

    Twitter India country director Taranjeet Singh steps down

    MUMBAI: After a four-year stint with Twitter India, country director Taranjeet Singh has stepped down from his role. He was one of the earliest Twitter employees in the country. The company’s Twitter’s global head of revenue strategy and operations Balaji Krish has been named as the interim country head until the replacement of Singh is hired.

    “India is one of our largest and fastest growing markets worldwide today. We have hired many Tweeps at Twitter India, diversified our client base across the country and continue to be the pulse of Indian society – breaking news, sports, entertainment, politics,” Singh tweeted.

    As Indian country director, he built the up the sales team from the ground up and led the social media giant’s expansion and investments. He worked closely with brands and agencies to increase their commercial opportunities and leading overall Twitter operations in India. Twitter compared to its competitors like Facebook, has not been dragged into in any major controversy yet.

    The media veteran has 20 years of sales and business development experience. He also spent close to a decade with BBC as head of advertising and sales director of South Asia.

    “I’m proud to say that Twitter India is in a strong position and will continue to grow stronger in the years to come. I want to thank all our partners, brands and agencies for their continued belief, trust and support in making my journey so incredible at Twitter,” he tweeted.

    MUMBAI: Twitter has expanded its Indian outreach to empower agencies and brands it works with to capitalize on live, always-on moments and video innovation through the platform. The outreach program in India is anchored by a three-prong strategy: gamified learning through DIY postcards, new deep dive courses for its Flight School online education programme, and a new series of multi-city #GoLive agency bootcamps.

Agencies know of Twitter, but not many know how best to leverage our latest tools in a way that adds value for their clients.     Twitter India will send weekly ‘Did You Know’ cards to agencies over a six week period, to help agencies in achieving their marketing goals through gamified learning. These ‘Did You Know’ cards will contain interesting facts and trivia about Twitter’s advertising solutions, share best practices on how to target and build an audience on the platform, and deliver research insights to agency representatives. On the corresponding Friday, there will be trivia quiz hosted from @TwitterAdsIN open to employees of participating agencies to test that week’s knowledge.

    New modules available to agencies and brand marketers globally

    For marketers seeking to advance their digital prowess, Twitter Flight School serves as the go-to resource for agencies and brand marketers to stay on top of the latest innovations on the platform and ideas to maximize campaign results. More than 7,900 representatives from brands and agencies in the region has registered for the free online education program so far. Within a week in India, nearly 600 agency representatives have signed up for the program.

    Twitter has added new deep dive modules to Flight School that support marketers who are keen on leveraging premium content advertising from top broadcasters, sports leagues, and content creators. Marketers can explore content partnerships with Twitter Amplify, scale optimisation with Twitter Ads, and maximize TV campaign results with Twitter integration.     Finally, Twitter kicks off a series of #GoLive agency bootcamps across Asia, including India, this August. The bootcamps are half day learning sessions for agencies comprising of intensive training workshops aimed at bringing together Twitter experts from marketing, research, product, and brand strategy to facilitate best practice sharing.The the first round of bootcamps will be conducted for some of the key agency partners including GroupM, Omnicom Media Group & Publicis Media. Later in the year, the program will be scaled to include some of the other agency groups too.

    More than 20 of these training sessions will be held with agencies across India, Indonesia, Philippines and Singapore between August and September.
