Twinkle Khanna bags new role as face of Titan’s Irth campaign

MUMBAI: There are handbags, and then there are stories you carry around in leather and zippers. With a wink and a wisecrack, Twinkle Khanna, aka Mrs Funnybones, has now been roped in as the first-ever brand ambassador for Irth Bags, from the House of Titan. And true to form, she’s already got a bone to pick with the bag industry.

The brand’s latest campaign, shot under her Mrs Funnybones avatar, doesn’t just showcase handbags, it pokes fun at them. From zippers that betray you at the worst possible moment to totes that don’t understand how women actually move, the films flip the script with wit, sass, and design solutions that promise to make IRTH the everyday ally women didn’t know they needed.

“There’s a whole world that lives inside a woman’s handbag snacks, secrets, sanity, sometimes even a screwdriver!” Twinkle quipped. “This campaign felt like the perfect fit for me. It’s clever, it’s honest, and it treats bags not just as accessories, but as companions in the chaos and charm of everyday life.”

The campaign kicks off with a spotlight on Irth’s Initials collection, the brand’s first monogram line. In her trademark style, Mrs Funnybones reveals how perfect design isn’t just seen, it’s felt, making even a simple bag a conversation starter. From tall shoulder bags and sleek handhelds to backpacks and wide shoulders, the Initials range merges timeless elegance with Irth’s design-first philosophy.

Titan Company Ltd business head of women’s bag division Kanwalpreet Walia summed up the vibe: “A woman’s bag is far more than an accessory. It’s her constant companion, her secret keeper, her styling partner, and sometimes even her snack stash! With this campaign, we wanted to spark playful conversations around all the fabulous and not-so-fabulous moments women share with their bags. And who better to lead this dialogue than Twinkle Khanna with her sass and sparkle?”

The films, produced by Kondurkar Studio under the creative direction of Amrish Kondurkar, are designed to be bite-sized drops of fun each one highlighting a fresh handbag truth. “It’s a collaboration of shared sensibilities,” Kondurkar explained. “Mrs Funnybones brings her wit and joyful take on daily life, Irth brings thoughtful design that makes each of those moments a little better. Together, they elevate the everyday.”

Behind the scenes, the campaign brought together a powerhouse creative team: from director Afshan Hussain Shaikh and cinematographer Kartik Vijay, to music by Sanjay Das and production design by Daaku Aunties. The polished films are already live on Youtube and across Irth’s and Twinkle Khanna’s Instagram handles, giving audiences a first peek into a campaign that promises style with substance, and humour stitched right into the seams.

As India’s women’s accessories market grows, Irth is carving out its own niche by being design-led, insight-driven, and refreshingly honest. And with Twinkle Khanna at the helm, expect handbags to become less of a silent accessory and more of a sparkling conversation piece.

Because let’s be honest when it comes to bags, every woman has a story. Irth just made them a little funnier.

  • Her Story wins Red Dot Award for brand and communication design

Her Story wins Red Dot Award for brand and communication design

Mumbai: Modern fine jewellery maison Her Story has made a mark at this year’s Red Dot awards, one of the most prestigious global design awards, respected internationally as a touchstone of good design. The brand brought home the Red Dot Award for Brands and Communication Design 2023, celebrating creative thought, impact and the seamless integration of a powerful concept across touchpoints. This win is particularly noteworthy as it positions a young modern Indian brand’s in-house efforts towards aesthetic and conceptual excellence ahead of some of the world’s top advertising agencies and global brand campaigns. On 3 November 2023, winners will be celebrated in Berlin at the Red Dot Gala, while their work will be published in the Red Dot International Yearbook – Brands and Communication Design. The award-winning brands and creative works are also presented to a wide audience in exhibitions at the Museum für Kommunikation in Berlin and the Red Dot Design Museum Essen. Other exhibition locations include the Red Dot Design Museums in Xiamen and Singapore.

The meticulous evaluation process for the Red Dot Distinction for the Advertising, Integrated Communication category, which had over 9,000 entries from more than 50 countries, included the criteria: originality and creativity, design quality and innovation, and impact and emotional significance. The Modern Perspectives campaign (2022-2023) opened up a dialogue on modernity and questioned stereotypes, gender-assigned roles and expectations. It celebrated the perspectives of modern women through the stories of five inspiring personalities – Anoushka Shankar, Smriti Mandhana, Kalki Koechlin, Twinkle Khanna, and Sobhita Dhulipala, capturing aspects of women that are often challenged by constructs of society. The campaign brought alive their personalities, showcasing keywords and ideas that resonate with them, through black-and-white and colour portraits and authentic visual storytelling that allowed audiences an intimate look at each woman’s real-life thoughts.

Each woman answered a question, contextualised to her own life. How does one achieve ‘balance’, as women are expected to ‘perfectly’ handle multiple roles; what does ‘freedom’ mean to a woman in different aspects of her life and in various societies? Who defines ‘ambition’, and what does ‘tradition’ mean to a woman who considers herself a global citizen? And in it all, we celebrate the beauty of choice of the modern woman.

Launched at the close of November 2022 leading to the opening to the brand’s one-of-a-kind flagship at Kala Ghoda, Mumbai, as a combination of a ‘teaser’ and ‘reveal’ campaign, Modern Perspectives caught the attention of consumers through five questions without immediately unveiling the identities of the five women. The intent was to create a moment of intrigue and introspection. The treatment of the campaign was unique in the brand’s decision not to counter those stereotypes with a stance of its own, but rather extend a seemingly simple question – so that every woman may discover her own answers in the context of her own life.

Brand director Sitanshi Talati-Parikh, who conceptualised and directed the campaign said, “As a meaningful brand, it was important for us to open up a dialogue on modern values, with subtlety as well as depth, and without presumptions. It has been wonderful to receive global validation on the concept, execution and emotional significance from an award that is truly respected and coveted by the creative minds of the world. What really brought home the award to us, though, were the voices of people who shared how the campaign impacted them in their lives. How it made them think, and made them question fundamental modern values that we often don’t stop to consider. To have made a difference in the way someone thinks, to have impacted someone’s life in a positive way, is what is truly humbling and gratifying.”

The impact of the campaign extended across an array of touchpoints. From prominent billboards in Mumbai and thought-provoking conversations on digital platforms, to luxury media coverage, meaningful events with the faces of the campaign, and a synergy with the brand’s own editorial-style communication, Modern Perspectives left an indelible mark – forging a meaningful connection with a diverse audience.

The campaign is meant to inspire people to bring colours in the bath space with confidence through decorative and coloured Kohler products. There is a lot you can do. Especially, the collection that I worked with, it is absolutely stunning as to what Kohler has done with decorative and colourful sinks and faucets by transforming them into artistic statements. The shoot managed to capture the theme of the campaign quite beautifully. They reflected the central idea of the campaign be it the Moroccan courtyard or an ironsmith’s furnace, you could see the inspiration behind the products coming alive.”

  • Parle mandates Taproot Dentsu to change communication for Milano

Parle mandates Taproot Dentsu to change communication for Milano

MUMBAI: Parle is ensuring that the growing frenzy behind wellness items does not dim the interest of people in its classic biscuit Milano. It appointed Taproot Dentsu to pick up pace for the brand and enable it to reclaim lost ground.

The brief was to shed the earlier idea of sinful, indulgent consumption that was labelled to this group of cookies. Taproot Dentsu had to make it relevant but light hearted as well.

Speaking about the campaign, Parle Products category head Mayank Shah said, “Since the launch of the Platina range last May, we have observed a renewed interest among consumers towards Parle’s premium offerings. We have always been innovators across categories and while we were happy that our premium brands were being well received, we also felt the need to bring something refreshingly new to the consumers. Extensive research and understanding of our target audience’s evolving tastes led us to add new variants to the Milano range, which consequently resulted in India’s first cookie with Hazelnut filling by an FMCG brand.”

Taproot Dentsu Mumbai GM Ayesha Ghosh said, “In times where balance and perfection are being chased and when indulgence is frowned upon, our task was to carve out a special guilt-free place in the minds of consumers for a rich, delicious cookie like Milano. The idea that followed was to approach it from an individual’s perspective, bringing out the importance of irreverent self-pampering. The fact that Twinkle Khanna personally identified with the messaging, further spurred off the idea for us to also add the element of ‘There’s a me in every Milano’ in the TVCs. Overall, the ads have been shot in a manner to remind us that every now and then, it’s okay to listen to your heart, give in to a craving and bite into that tempting cookie!”

Taproot Dentsu Mumbai, executive creative director Pallavi Chakravarti said, “Twinkle is the perfect spokesperson for Milano. She doesn’t take herself too seriously, she’s her own person, which is evident from the career and life choices she has made. Milano, while maintaining the `category codes’ of a premium cookie is evolving the same codes with a playful dig at rigid dietary fads that can suck the joy out of life. With this film, we want to tell people that it’s absolutely fine to give in to the indulgence of a delicious Milano every now and then.”
