  • Here’s how you can control who replies to your Tweets with Twitter’s new conversation settings

Here’s how you can control who replies to your Tweets with Twitter’s new conversation settings

NEW DELHI: Twitter is where people go to see and talk about what’s happening. But sometimes, unwanted replies make it hard to have meaningful conversations. The service has been working to give people more control over their conversations. To this end, Twitter has globally rolled out a new update that gives people the ability to choose who can reply to their Tweets and join in their conversation.

These new conversation settings are available to everyone using Twitter, across iOS, Android and twitter.com. Here are some simple tips on how you can make the most of these new controls from Twitter

How to choose: who can reply to your Tweet
From twitter.com or the Twitter for iOS or Android app, tap on the compose Tweet button

Click or tap the globe icon, to choose who can reply to your Tweet from the following options:

     Everyone

     People you follow

     Only people you mention

Once you finalise your settings, compose your Tweet and click or tap Tweet to post

Important to note: People who can’t reply will still be able to view, Retweet, Retweet with Comment, like and share your Tweets. Also, once you’ve published a Tweet, you cannot change the reply settings of that particular Tweet.

How to choose: who you can reply to

From the compose screen, you can see the people in the conversation you will reply to. Click or tap Replying to… to bring up an editing screen with a list of everyone who is a part of the conversation. Up to 50 people who are in the conversation will be displayed.

Adding people to a conversation: Swipe down to close the editing screen, and then simply type their username into your Tweet.

Removing people from a conversation: To remove people from the conversation in the editing screen, simply click or tap on the checkmark icon to deselect participants. Once someone is unselected, the checkmark icon will be unchecked.

Blocked accounts: Accounts you have blocked will be visible to you in the recipient list, and will indicate that you have blocked them. From the editing screen, you can choose to remove the blocked account from the conversation by clicking or tapping on the checkmark icon.

How to view participants of a conversation

You can also view participants of a conversation from Tweets you see in your Home timeline, profile page, notifications, or from a Tweet detail. To view participants’ names, bio, and @usernames:

    Click or tap Replying to…

From here you can see everyone who is included in this reply. You can also follow or unfollow people in this list.

Just like you can see the total number of likes and retweets for any tweet, you can also see how many people are participating in the conversation by the reply count. You’ll see a number next to the reply icon indicating how many direct replies the original Tweet has received.

Arnab quits Times Now; Twitter gets noisy

MUMBAI: When a man at the top of his game moves on, he is probably got a bigger game in mind. Love him or hate him, but, you cannot ignore him. He has transformed the way news is gathered, broadcast and consumed on Indian television.

Known for standing with his viewers, replacing discussions with his monologue brand of nationalism, Arnab Goswami, India’s preacher-in-chief, has bid adieu to Times Television Network. He was the editor-in-chief of Times Now and ET Now. The channel’s flagship primetime show at 9pm – The Newshour, was Goswami’s last as its anchor on Tuesday..

Goswami reportedly announced his resignation at an editorial meet on Tuesday morning.

With speculation rife everywhere about his next movement, some hint at his new independent media venture while some state that he is going to be the face of some other channel.

One thing is clear, from Wednesday, family dinner debates will be incomplete without him. The ‘loud’ news space, a niche which he championed, will be left with a void and the nation wants to know why…He made sure that even those who dislike his debates made themselves, secretly at times, available in front of their living room TV sets to enjoy the high-decibel show.

From what made him take this impending jump from the newsroom to what is next on the cards is still not clear. Although, right after this news broke, it took less than a minute for the Twitterati to erupt with reactions, both positive and negative. From observing a one-minute noise as a tribute to the anchor, to observing the 9-10 pm as the “Earth Day” post his resignation, following which, Twitter went berserk.

  • Twitter to simplify its 140 character rule

Twitter to simplify its 140 character rule

MUMBAI:  Twitter  is to simplify Tweets in the coming months, making it faster and easier for people to express themselves with more room in their 140-character Tweets. Media attachments, such as photos and videos, will no longer count toward the character limit; @names in reply to Tweets will be removed from the count; and people will now be able to Retweet and Quote Tweet themselves, enabling them to resurface any of their previous Tweets and add new commentary. In addition, any new Tweet beginning with an @name will be seen by all followers.

“One of the biggest priorities for this year is to refine our product and make it simpler,” said Twitter CEO and cofounder. Jack Dorsey. “We’re focused on making Twitter a whole lot easier and faster. This is what Twitter is great at – what’s happening now, live conversation and the simplicity that we started the service with.”

“We’re not giving up on the idea of Twitter being in the moment. That concept of brevity, speed and live conversation – being able to think of something and put it out to the world instantly – that’s what’s most important,” added Dorsey. “We’re always going to look for opportunities to make Tweets a lot more expressive, and enable people to say what they want to say. As long as things are fast, easy, simple and expressive, we’re going to look at what we can do to make Twitter a better experience.”

Earlier this year, Twitter announced changes to its timeline, enabling people to get back to live as quickly as possible while still making sure they didn’t miss important Tweets while they were away. The reaction to the enhanced timeline has been positive with less than two percent of people opting out, and has increased engagement from people on Twitter with significantly more Tweets, Retweets, Replies and Likes.

Additionally, improvements were made this year to the process of signing up new people on Twitter, helping them find new accounts by topic, location and people. This new on-boarding flow has resulted in dramatic increases in Follows, up 48 percent, and Mutual Follows, up 56 percent, on average across both iOS and Android OS. Mutual Follows are important because it’s two people who recognize each other, talk to each other and give each other feedback. That’s critical for new engagement and usage.

Narendra Modi’s tweets made available on SMS

NEW DELHI: With increasing emphasis on social media by the present government, citizens who do not have access to internet will be able to receive the tweets sent by Prime Minister Narendra Modi from time to time on issues of national importance.

People who want to know Modi’s views on various events can now receive his tweets through SMS on their mobile phones.

A person wanting to receive the tweets will merely have to give a missed call to (011) 30063006 and the caller will start receiving these tweets.

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah has written a letter to all state and district units of the party to popularize this concept.

For those using the internet, the Prime Minister can also receive mails from people on either pmindia.nic.in or mygov.in.

Currently, Amitabh Bachchan is one of the few whose tweets are being sent by SMS to selected mobile users.

Jimmy Shergill promotes his next with quirky tweets

MUMBAI: Actor Jimmy Shergill, who will be next seen playing a security officer in upcoming horror flick ‘Darr@The Mall’, found an amusing way to deal with the exhaustion on the sets of the film, which was mostly shot at night at various malls in the city.

Jimmy said, “During the night shoots, we all used to be sleepy and exhausted as we had to go about our daily routine during the day too. So, whenever I used to see members of the cast catching a nap in a chair or something, I would click their pictures and put them up on social networking sites, with funny comments accompanying them about how the director was making us work so hard.”

Apparently, Jimmy’s friends and associates found this quite amusing and they got back to him to tell him about how much they enjoyed the funny tweets. Hopefully, they will enjoy the movies that much as well.

The film is directed by Pavan Kripalani and produced by MSM Motion Pictures and Contiloe Entertainment stars Nushrat Bharucha, Arif Zakaria, Asif Basra, Nivedita Bhattacharya, Shraddha Kaul and Neeraj Sood and is slated to release on 21 February.
