ANI upgrades field units with TVU one 5G pack for stronger live coverage

MUMBAI: ANI, South Asia’s leading multimedia news agency, has upgraded its field production fleet with TVU Networks’ latest TVU One 5G backpack. Designed for challenging environments, the compact pack houses six 5G modem modules, each paired with a dedicated three-antenna Mimo (multiple-input, multiple-output) array, plus a four-antenna Wi-fi Mimo system totalling 22 antennas.

This advanced design significantly improves performance in congested urban areas, crowded venues, disaster zones, and weak-signal rural regions, enabling crews to go live from locations where other systems often fail.

Unlike typical single-antenna printed designs that face near-field interference and self-cancellation when radios are clustered, TVU’s per-modem antenna diversity ensures cleaner rf conditions across carriers and frequency bands. The result is stronger links, higher stability, and more reliable throughput even under demanding conditions.

At the transport layer, TVU’s ISX (Inverse Statmux) technology bonds and orchestrates traffic across all available connections: 5G, ethernet, and Wi-fi, while dynamically routing packets around congestion and cell-edge dropouts. This ensures ultra-low latency and broadcast-grade stability even in contested spectrum environments.

“As South Asia’s leading news agency, it is our responsibility to deliver breaking news with speed, reliability and quality,” said ANI CEO Sanjiv Prakash. “By upgrading to TVU’s latest 22-antenna 5G system, our journalists can now go live from places others can’t: faster, more reliably, and with greater consistency.”

“We engineered TVU One’s RF system to thrive in the harshest real-world conditions,” said TVU Networks CEO Paul Shen. “Its six 5G modules, each with a three-antenna MIMO array, plus a four-antenna Wi-fi Mimo backbone, give it the density and isolation needed to overcome congestion, while ISX technology ensures seamless data flow.”

The TVU One 5G features a total of 22 antennas, comprising six 5G modem modules with three antennas each and a four-antenna Wi-fi Mimo setup. Despite its advanced hardware, the pack remains lightweight and compact, ensuring mobility without compromising performance. Its antenna diversity and isolation architecture mitigate near-field interference effectively, while ISX technology provides real-time bonding and adaptive path optimisation across carriers and frequency bands. The system’s multi-provider and multi-band agility also guarantees stability across varying infrastructures and international deployments, making it ideal for global field operations.

  • Remote production and live sports

    Remote production and live sports

MUMBAI: As sporting events came to a standstill due to Covid2019, technology came to the rescue for broadcasters. Ensuring social distancing, channels have adapted to remote production swiftly. Though it's not a new trend, the pandemic has given it a boost.

In remote production, the PCR is located far from the actual location of the game, wherein a director, who is controlling it, decides which feed to take from the ones he is receiving from cameras positioned at the stadium. Besides stadium feed, the director also receives the commentators' feed who are being patched live from their home as well as the graphics team. The director assembles and mixes all the feed from different locations to get the final output.

Bodhitree Multimedia co-founder and director Mautik Tolia, who had a 12-year stint at Neo Sports Broadcast, says: "On a theoretical level, remote production is easy to happen, but on a practical level, it would face some challenges with respect to bandwidth and connectivity. To execute the whole thing seamlessly is quite tricky but will have to start making these experiments amid the ongoing crisis.”

He adds that it will cost 20-25 per cent of the traditional production of live sporting events.

Many international companies such as TVU Networks and Dalet Digital Media Systems are providing highly equipped, low-latency, long-term and good broadcast quality solutions.

TVU Networks VP – product management Matt McEwen says, “Even though sports are not back just yet, the production crews have already been using this technology to create live coverage from home with sports talk programmes. They are already becoming familiar with this technology and there is no doubt that this technology will continue to be used as live sports resume.”

In India, Star Sports and Sony Sports have indulged in remote production for non-live chat shows.

A source close to a leading sports broadcaster says, “Remote production for non-live chat shows is already going on. Our main concern right now is to keep viewers engaged and market whatever property we are able to create." However, he adds that the decision on remote production for live sports will only be taken when there is a clear idea from the various governments’ and sports federations' decision to open for the usual sporting calendar.

“Broadcasters are looking for an easy way to access the content; something which is accessible through the internet that even if the bandwidth is bad they should be able to work on it,” says Dalet Digital Media Systems regional sales manager Rahul Goyal.

McEwen explains that live remote production is already possible using commodity internet connections and cloud-based production tools.  This has not only significantly reduced the cost of production but has also made it more flexible with what can be achieved.

He further adds, “For instance, IP connectivity has made it possible to have live coverage from virtually anywhere…even someone’s home! Crews working on production don’t even need to be in the same location. Lower costs and increased flexibility should result in more event coverage which will please audiences.”

Echoing the same view, Goyal says, “Remote production had started before the Covid2019 crisis. When we talk about remote production, it’s mainly to use fresh video from different sources or acquiring various files from somewhere and working on editing and VPN platforms to get the final output.”

Well-versed in live sports production, Tolia explains that remote production works with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning and has gained prominence in games like football. A technologically advanced camera tracks the ball and different players in the game. This is done when the computer is fed with the data of ball movement from the cameras placed at the stadium that sends the captured feed to PCR.

TVU Networks’ McEwen believes that eventually all sports events will benefit from it. In particular, niche sports and other events that were previously not covered live will benefited.

Marquee events such as Olympics 2020 and Euro Cup have either been cancelled or suspended by a year or indefinitely. Even if some sporting events take place across the globe, they are going to be closed doors. In-stadia fans create drama and fuel the enthusiasm of TV viewers and of course boost players’ morale.

McEwen says, “As we transition to IP and commodity internet connectivity, it is much easier to expand coverage to areas where it may have previously been too expensive to provide coverage. For instance, it may be possible to add live coverage of fans during a game even if they are not at the event itself. Low-cost, highly efficient, and robust encoders now exist that make this possible. It is also possible that fans themselves could utilise smart phones to contribute to a production as the camera and encoding technology on these devices have become so good, especially when combined with suitable transmission technology.”

I am excited to be able to lead our teams and demonstrate our capabilities to our customers.”

  • Technology comes to broadcasters’ rescue to create content during Covid2019

Technology comes to broadcasters’ rescue to create content during Covid2019

MUMBAI: Technology has been the saviour for most broadcasters while producing content amid the nationwide lockdown due to the Covid2019 pandemic. This was the unanimous view of panellists from news and entertainment channels, who came together for a virtual panel discussion to share their experiences of generating content from home or remote locations.

The virtual panel discussion, an initiative by indiantelevision.com held on 5 May, was moderated by Indian Television Group founder, chief executive officer and editor-in-chief Anil Wanvari. The panellists who participated in the virtual discussion were TVU Networks SVP solutions Jared Timmins, Mathrubhumi Television senior manager-technical Bijumohan R, Asianet News Network chief promo director Ajith Nambiar, Fakt Marathi co-founder Shirish Pattanshetty, TV9 Network technical head Devendra Maurya, ABP News Network SVP broadcast technology and operations Manish Sharma, Odisha Television head technical and engineering Sukanta Rana, Hoichoi VP-content Anindo Banerjee and senior TV Journalist Bhupendra Chaubey.

Explaining how they have been able to provide tech-based solutions to broadcasters across the globe, TVU Networks SVP solutions Jared Timmins said, “We have seen people getting on cloud technology as soon as possible during this crisis situation, and our mobile application TVU Anywhere has seen 500 per cent jump in usage.” TVU Networks provides IP-based live video solutions.

“Unlike video call applications such as Skype and Zoom, our technology helps the broadcasters to achieve desired audio and video quality within the given internet bandwidth,” added Timmins. He also showed a presentation of their latest offerings of new technology and cleared the doubts of news and entertainment broadcasters who participated in the panel discussion.

Majority of the broadcasters are forced to use all the available resources amid lockdown to create content for the viewers. In this context, Bijumohan R said, “We have been using remote technology before the pandemic too, but the current crisis has forced us to use video calling apps such as Skype and Zoom more frequently.”

The news channel has reduced the workforce by two-third and has asked people to work from home or wherever  they are located. The remaining one-third workforce has been asked to come to the office.

Echoing Bijumohan's views, Sharma said, “The technology that majority of news broadcasters are using today was already available and they have been using it now at an optimum level for content production.” ABP News Network was the first news broadcaster in India to use the very first model of TVU Networks.

Sharma believes that bonded server technology is a life saviour during these testing times. He added, “All our reporters, guests, speakers have been using the TVU Anywhere mobile application to send live information and also access to this app is given to all our guests during a live debate or for their byte.”

The news broadcaster organised its current edition of a summit called Shikhar Sammelan virtually with the help of the TVU Anywhere mobile apps and backpacks.

Chaubey, who moved on from CNN-News18 a month ago, has since then been working on his digital channel. He said, “The era of normal ways of broadcasting has completely gone. All those old broadcasting technologies are behind us.” He adds, “Digital or Zoom summits are exactly the kind of platform you’re talking about and is the way forward in future.”

News has been the TV content consumption driver during this Covid2019 period, as the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India and Nielsen India joint report states. news channels are the only ones successfully producing fresh content compared to other genres.

In this regard, Pattanshetty, said, “Majority of GECs are showing repeat telecast of broadcasted shows unless they have some content in the bank.”

Banerjee added, “Television has come to a standstill due to the Covid2019 scenario and repackaging of shows is the only way we are trying to survive. We are planning to come up with Live TV in our application; we have a huge library of over 200 films and series.”

Rana explained how the channel has been creating a 1.5-hour show every day from home for one of their GEC channels. He says, “We have created a script and have asked the artists to record their part on the mobile phone and send to the broadcaster, which we edit and telecast it on our channel every afternoon.”

The virtual panel discussion, appreciated by the panelists for its topicaliy and relevance, was watched by over 1000 people during a live stream on indiantelevision.com’s Facebook platform. It also received a resounding engagement on its Twitter handle.

The TVU Anywhere mobile app has seen a large increase in global use recently as TV reporters and anchors have migrated from traditional studios to reporting from living rooms, balconies and shared living spaces within their homes and apartments. The app's ease of use and fast set up – requiring just a download to the user’s mobile phone – allows anyone needing to do safe remote reporting to go live instantly.

In addition to incorporating patented IS+ technology for transmission of a reliable broadcast-quality picture over cellular and WiFi, TVU Anywhere features dual camera operation for simultaneous use of the front and back cameras of a single Apple iOS mobile device. This allows a solo field reporter to do live reporting in Picture-in-Picture (PiP) or in 50/50 split screen mode, capturing live video, audio and metadata simultaneously for two subjects.

TVU Anywhere can also be used remotely for non-live interview reporting. It’s PiP feature supports the use of prerecorded video. A reporter can comment live while the recorded video is playing.

Another feature for field reporting within Anywhere is integrated video return feed which allows for the coordination of a live shot with studio producers or directors at their homes or other remote location. Instead of just using audio, the Anywhere app can show a low latency video return feed right on the phone screen in PiP mode. The parties can also have a two-way conversation using TVU Anywhere’s VoIP feature in real-time, allowing the return video feed to become an enhanced confidence monitor and collaboration tool.

The Token feature for TVU Anywhere makes the setup of remote high-quality briefings and interviews easy and fast. All you need to do is to send a pre-generated QR Code that can be scanned by a smart device to the recipient. To see how it works, view the Token feature on its YouTube page.

TVU Producer provides the means for cloud-based remote production for stations with a robust feature set, allowing them to move their traditional studios to a home or other remote location. With TVU Producer, you can ingest multiple video streams including live professional sources up-to full HD resolution. It features unparalleled and patented frame accurate switching between two live sources from multiple devices, events or locations as well as enhanced broadcast outputs using picture in picture, picture-by-picture and quad-view. Producer also offers graphics and dynamic overlays including full integration with Singular.live.

TVU has been working with news stations and government offices in certain countries, including the USA, to set up video pool feeds using TVU Grid, TVU’s IP switching, routing and distribution solution, to streamline the sharing of critical information on COVID-19. Project Pool Feed allows local TV stations to share live content between each other as well as with local government. Officials or spokespersons have the option to use the free TVU Anywhere app on their mobile phone to go live to the pool feed for press briefings. The local stations are all connected using TVU Grid and can distribute the briefings from the pool to their viewers on TV, social media and websites.

“TVU is committed to working with all broadcasters across India to support their efforts to deliver crucial updates and information to their viewers during this unprecedented time. We are providing our cloud and IP based solutions free at this time to help broadcasters transition as seamlessly and as quickly as possible to remote production to minimize disruption,” said Sushant Rai, Vice President, Sales – South Asia, Middle East & Africa, TVU Networks. “In addition, TVU will continue to provide its renowned 24/7 global service and all support personnel are fully mobilized to support customers as well as the larger broadcast community.”
